[mou-net] Hooded Warbler Nest-Afton State Park
Found a female hooded warbler on nest. First saw her Thursday am, but didn't have enough time to look for nest. Today I did. Went to where I saw her Thursday, and marked trail when I first heard her chip. Then continued till she stopped and marked trail. Then went in between marks and sat on folding chair I brought. Later bird was flushed by two joggers with dogs. Went into chip mode for a while and then stopped. Next time was flushed by a fox, which had got another bird in a panic. This time I saw where she came from, right in front of me. Waited till she went onto nest and took her picture. Is very close to path, and fox den with at least one pup. Saw the male only once, but he came around about every half hour and sang loudly, especially when I was watching fox listening. Thanks to Pete Nichols for posting about the warblers, would like to show you the nest. [mou-net] Western Kingbirds location
And on way to Sherburne, checked for Western Kingbirds in Ramsey, Mn. Found a pair where they were last year, Between Ramsey Blvd.-CR 56 and Armstong Blvd.-CR 83 on US Hwy 10, southside of highway. 5-26-12 Heading North on US Hwy 10 go past Ramsey Blvd -CR 56. Just past Cor sign is a blue sign for future Ramsey Northstar Train station. I parked in this driveway and looked directly across highway. The Western Kingbirds were in the two trees standing alone. There is a bar closed down on south side of highway with large empty parking lot. Just north of that place are paved walking paths around a couple small ponds. Last year I parked there and saw Western Kingbirds up close hunting. Also saw orchard orioles and grasshopper sparrows there last year. Watch telephone lines for any bird hawking bugs with yellow. Good Luck. Joe Conley Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Sherburne NWR -Common Gallinules
Saw one Common Gallinule on Wildlife Drive on Big Bluestem Pool, by water control structure. One Coot was swimming along the edge of cattails, when gallinule came out and chased it away. Gallinule then went back behind its blind and waited for another chance to defend its territory. After second chase it went north across channel from water structure. Also think I saw a Le Contes Sparrow on the Wildlife Drive on the Prairie Trail. Just after clearing the bushes a sparrow flushed from middle of sedge meadow on my left. Flew across meadow and landed in small bush at the weed line. Could only see buffy color on cheeks and dark eyes. Did not move until Common Yellow-throat attacked it, then disappeared into weeds. Was raining and couldnt see good enough, but probably going to look for it again. And on way to Sherburne, checked for Western Kingbirds in Ramsey, Mn. [mou-net] Am. Bittern -Silverwood Park
American Bittern at Silverwood Park, my second in two days. Never saw one last year. First one thanks to Manley Olson. In first small pond as you enter park off C.R.- E, just west of Silver Lake Rd. Three River Park Naturalist said bird has been here 3 or 4 days. Also got an deluxe owl show there. Saw Mom Dad, and three young owls. Two were branchers, and what people there called the Runt still at nest site. Saw male make a kill, some kind of blackbird, and feed one of the branchers. He then went towards nest tree and was mobbed by crows. Saw one crow slam into his back, but he held onto dinner. After crows left, he hooted a little. One brancher was in top of nest tree and other was about 100 yards south up on hill, up in tree. The nest tree is right next to tar walk path, in woods, north of building. The nest was in broke off limb of large oak tree. Great Horned Owls. Silverwood Park, St. Anthony, C.R.- E Silver Lake Road. This is 4 traffic lights south of 694 on Silver Lake Rd. [mou-net] Snowy Owl - Rochester ??
My friend who lives in Rochester, saw a Snowy Owl on the 28th of January. She took me to the sign that day, about 6:30 PM. Not there then. She saw it at 11 AM that day. Says since then has seen it almost daily. Sees it about 8 Am, usually. Said she has seen it probably at least 10 times. Was on billboard sign , north side of 37th St Nw just East of 3rd Ave Nw ? A Wells Fargo bank is across the street and a Hy-Vee grocery store, with big parking lot. Billboard angles toward street, and owl sits between the two signs. One sign has Pro Life, other had Pepsi when I was there. She saw it today, 2-10-12. Says it is mostly white. Probably would be good to look from across street at Hy-Vee, and try to see this urban owl. Post if you see it, so I can tell herothers got to see her owl. Thanks. [mou-net] Prothonotary Warblers - William OBrien State Park
Saw two prothonotary warblers this morning. Thank you Linda Sparling for posting her find on Friday, Aug 6th. Were exactly where she saw one. Past picnic shelter, down to river, across water on dead logs. One way brighter, so probably male and female. Also chestnut-sided,redstarts, nashville and probable canada. Was all yellow in front with smudge for necklace and all dark on back. Didnt see eye ring as was moving quickly about. Not like the prothonotarys that were right out in the open over the water on dead trees without leaves.
