[mou-net] MOU Website update

2024-09-06 Thread Paul Budde
The MOU website was updated today to accommodate the summer 2024 changes to
the AOS Checklist. Now, you'll see such species as

Western Cattle-Egret (instead of Cattle Egret)
Black-crowned Night Heron (instead of Black-crowned Night-Heron)
Yellow-crowned Night Heron (instead of Yellow-crowned Night-Heron)
American Barn Owl (instead of Barn Owl)
Northern House Wren (instead of House Wren)

The more astute among you might also detect some slight changes in
taxonomic order, though these were not as significant as reorderings in
some recent years.

The big change this year is that Common and Hoary redpolls were determined
to be a single species, so many of you might see your totals drop by one.
The way we handled this change was to move all records as follows:

Common Redpoll --> Redpoll (Common)
Hoary Redpoll --> Redpoll (Hoary)
Hoary Redpoll (exilipes) --> Redpoll (exilipes)
Hoary Redpoll (hornemanni) --> Redpoll (hornemanni)

and we added "Redpoll" as an option. This is as complicated as it is
because we didn't want to lose any information, and the AOS essentially
punted on the subject of Redpoll subspecies. Perhaps we'll learn more of
how they are thinking in the future.

Everything seems to be working fine, EXCEPT we are aware that there is
still an issue on how Redpoll shows up on the various checklists available
on the website. We'll work on this until we figure it out. Rest assured
that no data has been lost.

If you detect any other problems related to this update (and unrelated to
redpolls), please let us know about them.

2022-10-25 Thread Paul Budde
Hi Jan,

It's a later bird than usual, as in half the years they are gone from the
southern half of the state by 21 October. Ovenbird is one of those warblers
that sometimes stick around until quite late in the season. Some extreme
dates we've had for this species:

12 Jan 2016 in Hennepin County
8 Jan 1994 in Olmsted County
1 Jan 2009 in Hennepin County (New Hope)
27 Dec 1018 in Hennepin County (Bloomington)
2 Dec 2009 in Hennepin County
28 Nov 2019 in Anoka County

[mou-net] Regular species for which we ask for documentation for the Seasonal Reports

2021-03-01 Thread Paul Budde
First, thank you to everyone who contributes data for the four seasonal
reports that the MOU publishes in The Loon. As the spring season (March -
May) commences today, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind observers
that for some species that can be difficult to identify visually, the
seasonal report team requires documentation for birds found outside of
expected windows of occurrence in the state. Here is a current list of all
the species and their windows.

* White-rumped Sandpiper in fall: Undocumented reports of fall migrant
White-rumpeds prior to mid-August are not published.

* Short-billed Dowitcher in spring: Reports of Short-billed
Dowitchers prior to 1 May without details are not published. (See The Loon
89:160-161.)

* Short-billed Dowitcher in fall: Any reports of Short-billed
Dowitchers after 15 September without details are not published. (See The
Loon 89:160-161.)

* Long-billed Dowitcher in summer: Any reports of Long-billed
Dowitchers during June or July without details are not published. (See The
Loon 89:160-161).

* Empidonax flycatchers in spring and fall: During spring and fall
migration, undocumented records of silent Empidonax flycatchers are not
included in this report. Observers are encouraged to include identification
details in their reports.

* Orange-crowned Warbler in fall: Undocumented August reports are
excluded.

We are asking for these details for both records submitted directly via the
MOU website AND for any eBird records. By "documentation", we don't mean
that an RQD needs to be on file; it's sufficient to include your details in
the notes associated with the record. Thanks for your help in documenting
these individuals!

Hi Jan,

The checklist used for submitting bird records at

The checklist published by the records committee at
https://moumn.org/mourc/checklist.php has also been updated.

You are correct that the one-page checklist available at
https://moumn.org/Checklist%202019.pdf has not yet been updated. I suspect
that will happen soon.

Re: [mou-net] No mockingbird???

2020-05-08 Thread Paul Budde
I think it's a real problem, Kyle, and not limited to just Minnesota. And I
don’t have a solution. You mentioned that ebird might be "THE" source for a
lot of birders, but it isn't as good as an email blast (in my opinion). But
even that requires the reporter and the receiver being on the same email
listservice.

Subject: Re: [mou-net] No mockingbird???

Just a general question, spurred by the mockingbird email (but not about
the mockingbird specifically)--how many bird "things" (report sources) are
people signed up for? For example, the first email titled 'No
Mockingbird???' implied knowledge among the general MOU-net recipients
about a mockingbird in the first place (I didn't get an email about one
previously, anyway). There's no location mentioned in that or the follow-up
email, either--is it assumed this is common knowledge? I'm guessing it's a
bird reported on ebird (for which I don't yet have an account, so that
could be my problem), but I have multiple email listserv acounts and am on
multiple Minnesota bird-related Facbook groups.

I'm not really a chaser, so it's not affecting me much but I am just
generally curious. That said, if something interesting were to be found
next door I could theoretically not know about it if I'm not getting all
the right reports. My question is not MOU-net specific; even if I was on
ebird, I'd miss things that are only posted here, or on Facebook, etc. And
it happens on the Facebook pages it happens too, where a report comes
through, often suggesting a unique bird has been somewhere for days, and
that everyone knows about it, but I can't be the only one who finds
themselves the last to know, am I? For those of you who think you have a
handle on pretty much all the birding reports locally, feel free to write
back with the list of sources you're receiving. I realize that ebird is
"THE" source for a lot of birders, yet I'm curious about the average number
of bird-related sources people are subscribing/contributing to. I consider
myself a serious (whatever that means) birder, and probably haven't heard
of them all. :)

[mou-net] Pandemic birding

2020-04-15 Thread Paul Budde
Especially in light of recent rare birds being reported, there are some
important points to keep in mind when birding during the current COVID-19
pandemic.

1. This is a great time to be working on your yard list. If you do any
birding away from home, choose spots where you are unlikely to encounter
others or where you know you can avoid close contact with others sharing
those spaces.
2. Bird alone or with those you live with. Traveling in a vehicle with
others with whom you are not in constant contact might be at reduced risk if
you are all feeling well, but it is not without risk (see #4).
3. If, while birding, you come upon a group of people looking at a good
bird, try to bird from your vehicle. If you must get out, stand away from
everyone else. If you need to be near a certain spot to see a bird, take
turns and give each other a lot of space. If the group is large, see it and
leave immediately as a consideration for others. This is not a time for
socializing in person.
4. Keep in mind that you yourself might already have the virus. You
may be in the earliest stages of the disease, or just asymptomatic. But if
you have the virus, you can pass it along to others.

For all the MOU-net list serve administrators who hope you stay safe and
healthy,

[mou-net] Winter Seasonal Report data for the MOU's journal, The Loon

2020-03-02 Thread Paul Budde
The winter season (12/1 - 2/29) is over. If you will be submitting a report
of your bird observations for inclusion in the winter seasonal report
to be published in The Loon, please do so by March 15th. Submissions can be
made throughout the season using the MOU website (http://moumn.org/). Look
under "Seasonal Report" at the top of the web page.

If you are in the practice of providing data on a less frequent basis from
uploads of third party listing software (Avisys, for example), it would be
appreciated if you could upload such data on a seasonal basis so that we
receive the data in a timely fashion. For eBird data, however, please note
that the MOU retrieves all Minnesota ebird data ourselves. There is no need
for you to upload your own eBird data to the MOU. But note that photos on
checklists are not provided by the folks at Cornell with the data, so that
documentation needs to be added to the MOU database separately.

Re: [mou-net] RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD ISANTI COUNTY

2016-10-10 Thread Paul Budde
Female Rufous and Allen's hummingbirds are extremely difficult to separate in
the field. While Rufous is more prone to wander, Allen's is not out of the
question -- even though none have been confirmed in Minnesota to date. For
example, there is a similar bird being seen in Massachusetts right now whose
identity is "open".

If any photographers chase this bird, try to get good shots of the tail
feathers - either from below or of a spread tail. That's the best way to
distinguish the two species.

Subject: [mou-net] RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD ISANTI COUNTY

Good morning,
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD has been visiting the feeder of Jacqui Baker in ISANTI
COUNTY for the past 2 weeks. She had been reporting a hummingbird regularly on
the MN Birding facebook page, but only recently thought that it could be
something different, as it had quite a bit of rufous. She took a picture of it
this morning, confirming its identity as a female Rufous Hummingbird.
She has stated that she will indeed accept visitors; here is her information
"3523 273rd Ave NE Isanti. no dogs (612) 226-7403" It has been coming every
15-20 minutes, suggesting that this is the only feeder that it is visiting.
I ask that if you do intend to visit, to please be respectful of her and her
property, as we don't want visitation rights to end. I'm sure this won't be a
problem, but a reminder never hurts.
Thank you all, I will be posting updates when I receive them, for those who
don't have Facebook.

[mou-net] Jirik Sod Farms shorebirds, Dakota

2016-08-17 Thread Paul Budde
I visited the Jirik Sod Farms south of 200th in Dakota County today. There
are still wet areas near the road that held numerous shorebirds, though I
didn't see a Red-necked Phalarope, nor any Buff-breasted Sandpipers.

Birds present included Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, and good numbers of
Stilt, Baird's, Least and Pectoral sandpipers. A couple of Semipalmated
Sandpipers were also present.

The Wagner Sod Farms near Castle Rock only held Killdeer and a lone Lesser
Yellowlegs.

[mou-net] Regarding the Red-throated Loon - Crow Wing County

2016-03-19 Thread Paul Budde
Ken and Pam Perry reported their discovery of a Red-throated Loon in
Brainerd earlier this week. Shortly afterwards, Jason Mandich spotted a
Facebook posting from the Wild and Free Rehab Facility in Garrison that
showed a photograph of a Red-throated Loon that had been brought to their
clinic. Here is information on that loon from Dr. Katie Baratto of the
clinic:

The loon was found on highway 371 by the Walmart in Baxter MN. It had
landed on the wet highway (assuming confusion with open water?). We took
radiographs to confirm that no injuries occurred and they looked great. We
kept the loon hospitalized for 3 days to make sure it was eating well and
then released it. Clayton Pederson found the bird on 3-10-16 (the same day
it was seen crash landing) in Baxter MN. It had no apparent injuries. It
was released on the Mississippi river in Brainerd on 3-13-16. The bird was
seen diving and catching at minnow after release

The bird is apparently still present, visible from Kiwanis Park.

[mou-net] Lake Harriet Gulls (5 sps)

2015-12-30 Thread Paul Budde
Lake Harriet is still mostly ice-free, though there is a nice ice shelf at
its south end. This proved to be a good roosting spot for gulls this late
afternoon. I counted about 1800 at 4 PM. While the vast majority of these
were Herring Gulls, there were still several dozen Ring-billed Gulls, a few
Thayer's Gulls (first-cycle, second-cycle and at least one adult), a
first-cycle Glaucous Gull, and a second-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull among
them.

Lake Calhoun is mostly frozen. As these two lakes tend to freeze and
ice-out together, I suspect both will be frozen over within the next day or
two.

I'm not certain of this, but it seems both the Minnesota and the
Ontario kingbirds may be on molt cycles reflecting an Austral rather
than a Boreal breeding and migrating populations. The Minnesota bird
is completing a molt and I thought that the Ontario bird may still
have juvenile outer rectrices and outer primary (but not worn enough
to be a year old). Better photos of each, with open wings and tails,
would help determine molt progression and age. For northern Tropical
Kingbirds (occidentalis) we would expect to see molt patterns like
this in Nov-Dec on the winter grounds (both preformative and
prebasic) and not June. Something to consider when encountering and
documenting summer kingbirds in North America.

Golden-winged Warbler Clarification
I want to clarify an earlier post today regarding Golden-winged Warblers
(GWWA) which contained a link to a brief, but very interesting, BBC
piece on temporarynesting areaabandonment to avoid tornadic activity.
Gordon Andersson mentioned "an apparent 50% mortality [unrelated to the
tornadoes] of the 20 study birds [carrying geolocators] in one year."
This is not quite correct.

The researchers resighted 10 of the 20 geolocator-bearing study birds a
year after the attachment of geolocators and color bands. One bird
already had dropped the geolocator somewhere, so if he is excluded from
analysis, 9 of the 19 geolocator birds--47%--were resighted. This means
the SURVIVAL RATE of that group was a MINIMUM of 47%, but could be as
much as 100%, because there is no way to know what happened to the 10
birds that were not resighted. Geolocators are quite different from
radio-transmitters or satellite-tracked devices that can be remotely
relocated by signal receivers. Geolocators do not transmit radio
signals, so birds carrying them must be resighted to determine if they
survived. (The birds must be recaptured to download the geolocator's
data.) If a geolocator-carrying bird isn't seen in the area being
searched it isn't correct to assume that it died. It may simply be
nesting a few miles away, but beyond the perimeter of the study area.
With geolocators one can't simply hop in a plane and fly over a large
area and listen for the appropriate ping on a receiver to refind more
study birds.

What the study actually showed was a 47% RETURN RATE of the
geolocator-carrying birds to their previous nesting area, rather thana
one-year survival rate. All things considered, being able to resight
47% of the study population a year later is pretty darn impressive.

Importantly, as this was a pilot study to assess the feasibility of
using newer, lighter-weight, geolocators on GWWAs, there also was a
control group. Of those GWWAs that were color-banded only (no
geolocators), 42% were resighted a year later. Though it's probably not
a statistically significant difference, the geolocator birds actually
showed a slightly higher return rate than the control birds. A return
rate around 50% is quite normal for small passerine species.

Finally, I want to thank Gordon, and urge him to continue his ongoing
valuable service of using MOU-net to post links to interesting avian
publications. There are a lot of important research findings being
published every week, and Gordon does a better job than most of us
keeping up with them. We all benefit from his efforts, and he probably
doesn't often get thanked for doing it.

Disclaimer: I am related to the lead author of this study. And I'm
probably being overly nit-picky here. But I'm fascinated with the
knowledge that might come from increased use of lightweight tracking
devices like these. It's important to understandthat they're now so
light as to be safely worn by some of our smallest birds during
round-trip migrations.

This evening at the southwest corner on and around the two floating docks
there were two different first-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gulls. One

coverts and scapulars. On the other covert feathering was less clearly
defined and more black. Both birds looked quite petite in body, head shape
and bill when compared to the Herring Gulls standing next to them.

Also present at times were two adult and one first-cycle Thayer's Gull.

I agree with Chris that Mullarney et al. is a fine book, but be aware that the

Re: [mou-net] Dakota County

2014-01-03 Thread Paul Budde
In addition to Jeff's caution below about care for the Snowys, listserve
moderators sometimes get posts from members with concerns, asking us to pass
them along. As an example, we received the following this morning:

"Around 2pm, I observed a photographer on Hogan Ave walking a considerable
distance into a farmer's field and flushing a Snowy Owl who had been
sleeping. Later in the afternoon, as I watched another owl along the same
road, the landowner drove by and I talked with him for awhile. He was very
nice and excited about the owls but expressed concern that people were
walking into his fields and potentially damaging his drainage tiles."

Let's try to avoid behavior that may impair others' ability to enjoy these
birds. Though those fields look like frozen tundra, they are still private
property.

Thanks for reading, and please keep finding and reporting more birds!

170th -190th between 52 and Hogan. I was able to photograph all 4 but one
was far away and into the sun so the picture was just for documentation. The
highlight was around 4:00 when the bird on Hogan, that Steve Weston Located
during the Hasting's Christmas Bird Count, perched on the telephone poles on
the side of the road. This made for great pictures in the light of the
setting sun.

Please try not to get too close to the snowies. If you get close enough to
make the bird flush then you are too close. Every time a bird flushes it
burns up energy it needs to survive.

I also was able to photograph the long-tailed duck under the railroad bridge

On Monday, December 16, I noted a flock of a dozen crows at an intersection
near Kings Highway and 36th street, Minneapolis.

The crows were actively picking up something from the pavement. I thought at
first they were working on a piece of road kill.

They appeared to be picking up and eating the blue stained road salt piled
on the intersection.

I've never seen birds eating salt. If they were picking up the salt and
doing some anting behavior, I didn't see it.

Has anyone else?

It could be that the crows confused the salt with grit, but that is pure
speculation.

Re: [mou-net] Black-bellied Plover (Duluth) and birding in Sax-Zim Bog

2013-07-02 Thread Paul Budde
With respect to the question as to whether that Black-bellied Plover was
moving south or north, you can see an occurrence graph for each species in
the state at
http://moumn.org/amcharts/migrate.php
Simply select the species of interest and which data you want to include the
occurrence map will be generated. Doing so for Black-bellied Plover
suggests that a late June date is still a northbound migrant - though, of
course, we don't really know what it's doing unless we were to track it over
a few days. Southbound migrants seem to show up in late July at the
earliest.

A few years back Karl Bardon published a terrific article in The Loon on
shorebird migration (The Loon 74:65-82). One of the key questions he
addressed was whether those June or July shorebirds were (in all likelihood)
moving north or south. My recollection is that he also found that BBPLs,
which tend to be late spring migrants, were still northbound through all of
June - though some shorebirds are certainly already on their way back south
by now.

it experienced a failed nesting attempt in the tundra this spring/summer.
Does it seem unusually early for a shorebird to be moving through? Earlier
this week, I found a Willet along the northern shoreline of Wisconsin.

Yesterday I led a trip to Sax-Zim Bog, and had some cool finds. The trip
started at 8am per request of the participant... and even though we missed
the prime-time in the early morning, we still ended up having two Le Conte's

2013-04-26 Thread Paul Budde
There have already been quite a few reports of White-faced Ibis -- a "Regular"
species on the Minnesota checklist -- and even one of a Glossy Ibis
("Accidental"). It would be very helpful for the seasonal reports if observers
could include for all ibis sightings details as to why a particular bird was
identified as one species or the other for all individuals found. As if
distinguishing between White-faced and Glossy Ibis were not bad enough, there
is growing evidence of hybridization between these two species. So what might
at first glance appear to be an adult, alternate plumage White-faced Ibis, upon
more careful examination might prove to have intermediate characteristics.

For more information on these hybrids, simply search on "Plegadis hybrids"
using your favorite internet search engine.

The MOU offered its data to eBird in the early days of eBird, but they were
not interested in it. We had a long conversation with them last year about
the same topic. Again, eBird was not interested. Undoubtedly, there are
good reasons why eBird is not able to use MOU data (the MOU typically
doesn't track precise location - just to the county level; we don't track
user effort in the field; we don't ask whether a checklist is complete or
partial), so this is not in any way meant to be critical of their decision.

On the other hand, the MOU has data that eBird does not collect or is less
interested in, such as a census of birds seen throughout a county in a day,
or partial lists of species and counts at a location. All of this data,
along with more complete censuses of specific locations, are distilled to
create the seasonal reports that are published in each issue of The Loon.

Carl et al,

First off, I apologize for those on the MOU list trying to find out about
birds and not caring one bit about this discussion. Feel free to delete this
post now.

I understand the desire to stay relevant, and it sounds like the MOU (hence
the 'et al') has decided that managing these records is somehow key to
maintaining themselves. I do get it. As a scientist though eBird is now the
data source for researching phenomena like climate effects on bird
populations, migration timing, etc. from local to the national (and soon
global) scales. I would love to see MN's records included because otherwise
they're a glaring hole in the dataset which does little to harm the research
but does a great disservice to those trying to manage bird populations
across the Upper Midwest. I'm sure the data you're collecting is extremely
valuable and far exceeds the depth of data that eBird is able to handle.
There are many ways to make your database/application/etc.
function so that the pertinent data can be exported into eBird and there are
going to be many records going into eBird from many people not affiliated
with MOU that I'm sure you're going to want. Just because the MOU didn't say
it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

So while I can understand your not wanting to adopt eBird (even if I
disagree with it), I'm not going to let you discount my post (which was
actually just an addition to Laura's post, noting the virtual-give-away of
the application) as a 'violation of terms' when in actuality your reasoning
was that you feel threatened by Minnesotans using eBird. I'm happy to share
all of my Minnesota observations with the MOU; I can simply export my eBird
data and send it to you... can your app do that?

Good Birding

[mou-net] Gulls at Black Dog today (5 sps, incl. Iceland)

2013-01-01 Thread Paul Budde
In the late afternoon about 100-125 gulls showed up at the west outflow of
Black Dog Lake. Earlier in the afternoon, about the same number of gulls
were seen roosting on the rooftops off of Highway 13 near the Burnsville
landfill, as they often do. What was different about today is that the
gulls were not on the rooftop of the usual building; instead, they were on
the new Menards building, which made them almost impossible to see.

The gulls were quite close at the west outflow, however, where the following
were noted:
Iceland Gull - first-cycle, loafing on the ice where the west outflow runs
out of Black Dog Lake;
Thayer's Gull - adult. This was a different bird from the one Caleb
photographed as it had a heavily marked head. Also seen loafing on the ice
after bathing.

We also saw the "Thayer's Gull" that Caleb photographed (see his email for a
link to the photo). I believe, however, that this bird is, at the very
least, an Iceland x Thayer's intergrade, and more likely a full Iceland Gull
(adult). While we don't have photos, we were able to observe it well as it
circled and fed at the river. The following were noted:
* Small size when compared to many nearby HEGUs
*   Small, rounded head
* Reduced blackish feathers on the upper wing surface
* In the primaries, P10 (the outermost) had a long, completely white
"tongue" (this is evident in Caleb's photo)
* P9 had a large white mirror that extended across the outer web of P9
onto P10.

The bird does have dark irides, suggesting Thayer's, but I've found the
irides of ICGU to be variable (yellowish to brownish). (If anyone sees
characteristics of this bird that suggest it is an intergrade, I'd be
interested in hearing your thoughts.)

A Glaucous Gull was seen over by the landfill. Undoubtedly this was the same
individual that Caleb photographed at some point today at the west outflow.
Several first-cycle Ring-billed Gulls and about 100-120 Herring Gulls
rounded out the total species count.

Paul, with Doug Kieser and Jim Otto.

[mou-net] Lake Harriet Gulls (6 sps)

2012-12-16 Thread Paul Budde
This evening there were (eventually) about 650 gulls on Lake Harriet in
Minneapolis, roosting in the SW corner of the lake on the ice, about 100 -
200 meters out from shore. Highlights included:

Great Black-backed Gull - first cycle bird (new?). I could not find the
adult that's beenseen here.
Lesser-Black-backed Gull - 1 adult
Glaucous Gull - 4 (3 first cycle, 1 adult or near adult). Interestingly,
the adult is a different individual from the one seen yesterday at the
Burnsville landfill. That one was extremely clean-looking; this one had
quite a few markings on its white head and upper breast.
Thayer's Gull - at least one adult present and seen well.
And , of course, Herring and Ring-billed Gulls.

[mou-net] CBC Access to Black Dog (Dakota County) on 12/15

2012-12-08 Thread Paul Budde
Xcel Energy will allow birders to have access to the causeway at the Black
Dog Power Plant as part of the Bloomington Christmas Bird Count next
Saturday, 12/15. As in the last few years, anyone interested will need to
be at the gate so that we can all be admitted at the same time - promptly at
either 10 AM or 3:30 PM. The entrance is at the plant, along Black Dog
Road, right along the Minnesota river. There is plenty of parking in the
pull out across from the gate; we'll then walk about 300 yards to the
casueway.

If you will be joining us for either walk, please email me with a count of
people in your party and whether you're interested in the morning or
afternoon (or both), as the plant manager has asked be me to give him a
rough count.

Good luck to all, wherever you might be birding next weekend!

[mou-net] Geese in Dakota, Rice, Le Seuer and Scott

2012-03-10 Thread Paul Budde
It was a spectacular day for geese in these counties. Greater White-fronts
poured into L. Byllesby much of the morning - most of these from the ENE. Many
Snows (with many blue morphs) were also present, though in smaller numbers. In
Rice, Wells Lake still had GWFG. The hot spot in Le Seuer was Gorman Lake (and
Dora, but the birds were hard to see at Dora). At both Gorman and at Byllesby
we were treated to 5 sps of goose. Though we found no open water in Scott, we
did find large flocks of GWFG and Snows headed Southwest.

All these spots also held good numbers of ducks (Pintails were particularly
notable), and Byllesby also had about 2 dozen Tundra Swans.

[mou-net] Access to Black Dog this weekend

2011-12-14 Thread Paul Budde
This Saturday, birders have permission to enter the Black Dog Power Plant at
10: 00 AM and 3:30 PM. Sean Peterson will be your guide. Please meet at
the main entrance along the river. As there is still no access from I-35W,
you will have to approach this area from the east (Hwy 77 side). Birders
who gather prior to these two times will be able to enter the facility as a
group, and then proceed to the causeway. If you are late and the group has
already entered, then you won't have access.

You can either walk in through the gate or drive in and park on the right in
the visitors' lot. At least one car has to drive in. To exit the plant
simply drive up to the gate and it will open automatically. Walking up to
the gate won't work, however, so if you do walk in, be sure to leave when a
vehicle is also leaving the grounds.

We will also arrange for occasional access subsequent to the Bloomington CBC
day - probably just at 3:30 PM. Stay tuned for details!

IMPORTANT: Please stay away from all trains. Do not cross between the cars
of any train, and do not attempt to go under any train cars. This is for
your safety and to preserve the good will that we have built with the Xcel
Energy staff over the last few years.

Thanks, and should you choose to show up, good luck!
