Re: [mou-net] Owl locations
Because I use calls and others use tapes to get the owls to respond, I want to minimize their exposure to disturbance. And using artificial calls of any kind is not a disturbance? As it was, we exposed the Screech Owl to predation by a Great-horned. I'm always amazed at how much credit people give themselves. I'm sorry, but this is extremely irritating. If I'm not mistaken, the MOU-listserve is about sharing information. Call me naive, but I believe mostbirders understand and have some ethics. Then plopping down on the railing (like he's still in the nest) watching all the Big Boys at the other feeders. Back and forth between the Woodpeckers, Chickadees, Nut-hatches, Finches and Catbirds. It's the third brood of the season. The first was lost to predation when the chicks were 3 days old, and the second fledged 4 chicks, which the parents are currently feeding. I did notice that they started almost a month later this year than they did last year. My neighborhood has a lot of mature trees and probably wouldn't be considered ideal bluebird habitat, but there must be enough open area that they find it acceptable. Plus I bribe them with a continuous supply of mealworms. ;) In May I spotted an Eastern Bluebird in my neighbor’s yard. Good spot but I did not pay much attention to it since we have very little open Bluebird habitat around here and I assumed it was in transit somewhere else, like Baker Park. For the last 2 weeks, my neighbor has seen Bluebirds in her yard. Over the past 3 days, I have seen them in her yard until, today, it crossed the street into my yard, a first for us. Even more interesting was that it was a juvenile bird being fed by its parent. So – now I have to look around the area for next year and see if there is a good nesting site around here. I guess these birds could have fledged somewhere else and are moving through here. Also, I have not seen much on the listserve about Bluebirds this year but, this got me wondering; Did the early cold weather adversely affect Bluebirds, i.e. are they re-nesting? Did they lose the early young to “cold weather starvation”? Or is this just a normal or regular brood? It just seems maybe a tad late in the year. Instead I told people the EXACT location. Cell phones opened and the calls were made. When I left there were 20 people standing around and more people on the trail heading to where the bird was; around 10:30-10:45AM. This was not an unknowing person not seeing the bird and spooking it. This was someone not respecting the bird's space and getting too close. By 11AM the bird was gone. [mou] about wildlife funding in Minnesota
Hi Jim, Thanks for being willing to bring this issue to a wider audience via the Star Tribune. Hopefully a few more Minnesota publications will pick up on your story. The perception of the Duck Stamp is that it's just for those people who hunt ducks. Maybe changing the name to a Natural Resouces Stamp or something more all encompassing would create a more complete image. State and Federal Land user fees. Certainly a reasonable request for birders who bird on those lands. Something to give back instead of just being a user and a taker. Really, how serious can any birder be, who doesn't see this as reasonable. How much does the average birder pay for: magazines, association fees , field trips, optics, software, clothing, gifts (with bird themes). Food and drink after a hard day birding (in the rain). How about supporting the habitat that you saw that life bird in? Just my two cents. Good luck with the article Jim! Sandy Kuder Jim Williams two-jays at att.net wrote: Hi, I want to ask two questions about wildlife funding in Minnesota. Before you read on -- responses, should you choose to make them -- are to be off net, to me directly, please. This is a subject some might find debatable, and this network is not the place for that debate. Thanks. I am working on an article for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The subject is the source of funds for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Most of the money it receives comes from hunters and fishermen. Yet, almost all of its work impacts non-game species as well, including birds. How would you react if birders and other non-consumptive users of wild lands in Minnesota were asked to pay a share of funding needs comparable to that contributed by hunters and fishermen? (Hunters and fishermen pay license fees and, in some cases, purchase stamps for particular hunting privileges. Hunters and fishermen also pay a federal tax on certain items of equipment, a tax at least some of which is returned to the state of purchase for ) If you feel you contribute already, how do you contribute to wildlife funding in Minnesota? The birder side of this discussion is important. I will appreciate your participation. I will not quote you directly unless I have your permission to do so. Jim Williams Wayzata - Need a vacation? [mou] msp snowy
--0-1610438077-1135892580=:84809 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit I saw my first Snowy Owl today. Times TWO! Both owls were seen today at MSP airport. The first one was spotted this morning about 10:30 on one of the four (radio?) towers in front of the UPS building. Got to watch it fly out to a marker on one of the runways. I had no idea they were that HUGE. Then checked out the other side of the runway, parked in the Mesaba air parking lot. Across the field between Mesaba and Sun Country I spotted another one perched on a structure that kind of resembled a mailbox. While that one was in my sights, another snowy flew in and put on a aerial show before flying off, leaving me completely awe struck. After coming around I was so giddy... I was laughing and clapping like a little kid. Then I traveled to Black Dog Lake. Didn't see a durn thing. On my way back out had to stop for 3 RN Pheasants crossing the road. That was a good sign so I parked my car at the MN Riverfront Park and looked around. A Kingfisher came screaming by, landing on a branch close by. (I always think of a fighter jet when I see one.) Then saw 2 adult Bald Eagles and a 2nd year Juv. sitting on branches overhanging the river. The Juvie was pretty much brown except for a significant patch of white on the breast. That's was made me think it was a 2nd year. To the other Birders out at the Airport today...you guys are great! And to the gentleman who was with his sister, THANK YOU for letting look through your scope! Sandy Kuder Coon Rapids, MN - Yahoo! Shopping Find Great Deals on Holiday Gifts at Yahoo!
