[mou-net] Varied Thrush Olmsted
I had reported and photographed a Varied Thrush in Rochester in the boulevard crabapples on Northern Valley Drive NE just south of the Glendale Hills park /playground on the 10th of Feb. The bird I saw and ebird posted was a colorful male. Subsequent observers the following day photographed a bird that appears to be a female. Bob Janssen's Bird of Minnesota section on Varied Thrush doesn't mention the ratio of males to females for winter migrants. So I am not sure how unusual a female winter migrant would be. He does say the last record of two birds, both males, at the same locale was in 1998 in Morrison county. To my knowledge no one has seen the two birds in the trees at the same time, but the photographs a day apart appear to be two different individuals. Any thoughts on this matter or additional information would be appreciated. jerry pruett olmsted county -- *chance favors the prepared mind* Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html During the pandemic, the MOU encourages you to stay safe, practice social distancing, and continue to bird responsibly.

Jim Peterson and I stopped by the south kalmar landfill reservoir and saw 9 Ross's geese along with est. 50 Greater White-fronted geese. Then we drove over to the east kalmar reservoir and saw a huge flock of geese, mostly sitting on the ice. The reservoir is 90% frozen and a few geese were along the melted shoreline. But what was amazing was the number of Ross's we saw there, at least 40! There was also a large group of Snow geese, blue's and white, estimated nearly 80. Then a flock of 9 Ross's landed among them so we could compare features literally side by side. This is the most Ross's I have ever seen in one location. Also many Greater White fronted numbering about 200. Very few ducks in number but a few of each of these species, Pintail, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Shoveler, Wigeon. -jerry pruett -- chance favors the prepared mind Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

In Bagley in Clearwater county we saw a couple of small flocks of Pine Grossbeaks. [mou-net] Late Warblers in Olmsted
I have seen a number of *Palm Warblers* and *Yellow-rumped warblers* hanging around the yard this week. Yesterday I had a pair of *American Redstarts* out by one of our garden ponds (we have two). Today I saw what I believe to have been a *Connecticut Warbler *by the other pond. When I first saw it without binoculars I was expecting to see an Orange-crowned Warbler. But once I had it in the glass I didn't see the features I expected, eye arcs with thin dark line, smudgy greenish streaking on a drab breast. Instead I saw a bird of larger size with a complete eye-ring, darkish head and neck with possible brownish tones, dull yellow under parts including yellow under tail coverts. No streaking or smudging on the breast or flanks. The bird was active and I was using binoculars through a window. I do this a lot and am comfortable that I was seeing real features and not artifacts of glass or dirt. I went outside to try to get a possible picture, but saw it fly off. I hung around to see if it might return and a *Black-throated Blue warbler* came to the pond and entertained me. I was unable to relocate the Connecticut. jerry pruett -- chance favors the prepared mind Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Upland Sandpiper Mower County
My wife and I were bicycling along the bike trail out of Lake Louise State Park this morning. The sandpiper flushed from along the trail. Larger dark shorebird, stocky in flight, no leg extension (i.e. yellowlegs). Bird called repeatedly as it flew off. The call matched Sibleys recording of "flight (flush) call NE" of the upland sandpiper. I have the Sibley phone app, so was able to listen to call sound while there. Unfortunately it flew straight off to the west, not circling us. There was a small area of standing water in a field nearby, but the bird didn't appear to come from that area. I believe it was in the taller prairie grasses/forbs which form a narrow band along both sides of the bike trail at that point. -jerry pruett -- chance favors the prepared mind Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Birding this morning with Jeff Stephenson at 7 mile creek park we found a pair of cerulean warblers from the paved trail along the creek near the picnic shelter. Nice looks. We aborted our Nicollet County birding to chase the Worm-eating Warbler Bob Dunlap reported Scott county. When we arrived at Murphy-Hanrehan about noon, there were a number of birders already searching. Only a few had seen the bird. We stuck around for 90 minutes without seeing or hearing it. No others did either that we spoke with. Later in another area we did get excellent looks at a Hooded Warbler. I was out running errands during heavy rain last evening and happened to be at the Kalmar reservoir west of Rochester (east of the landfill) on 70th Av NW just as rain storm let up. The sun was low and under the clouds so the light was perfect if I would have only brought my camera. It swam into the reeds on the south side and was visible as it foraged. Birding the morning with Jim Peterson. Notable sightings; following up on a call from John Hokema from the previous day we relocated the 2 Ross's Geese and a large flock of White-fronted Geese at the Kalmar Reservoir west of Rochester. Soon they were harassed out of the water by a Bald Eagle, they landed in a field south of the reservoir. Also found 4 Horned Grebes at the small reservoir south of the landfill. Later we located an early Winter Wren at the Izaak Walton wetlands.
