[mou-net] Brown Booby

2022-08-14 Thread Roy Zimmerman
The bird was present mid-afternoon on a barge on the Mississippi River in
Winona.

All, note that I very carefully posted a photo to "Recently Seen" checking
the date to be sure that it said August 14. The photo on the website says
August 15 which isn't even here yet!

The same thing happened to me when I posted the Tri-colored Heron photo a
few days ago.

[mou-net] Paper Session Book Sales

Do you have old bird books that you no longer use? US or Minnesota guides?
Guides for other states or other countries? Fiction or non-fiction with a
bird theme? Travel books that might be of interest to birders? Please
consider donating your books for this year's paper session book sale.

The paper session this year will be Saturday, December 3rd. (Information
about registration will be coming out soon.)

I have "volunteered" again this year to help with book sales. Between now
and December 3rd please get to me any books you would like to donate. If
you live in the Twin Cities area or not too far away, I may be able to pick
the books up at your house. Or you can deliver them to my house 1974
Castle Court E, Maplewood. Or you can bring to the paper session December
3rd, but it is more convenient if I can get them earlier for sorting and
pricing.

Also, I will be in Duluth Friday evening, November 4 and Sunday afternoon,
November 6. If you are in Duluth, I could pick books up those days.

Please email me if you have any questions or want to rendez-vous.

Bird Walk - Summary

While co-leading a walk at the Bass Ponds this morning with Brianne Keehan,
our group found an immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. The bird was
observed at 8:10 am, sitting in a tree on the North side of the first pond
you come to on your right. This area would be visible from the small
observation platform on the pond, or on the trail just west of the
observation platform. We observed the bird sitting in the tree for about
15 minutes. We returned later to the area and were unable to relocate the
Heron, but one of the participants likely observed the bird fly and land in
the tree line to the West of our initial spot where we observed it. So its
likely still in the area.

Water levels on Long Meadow Lake are still a little high, so there are no
mud flats for Shorebirds at this time.

Here's a list of some of the birds we observed on the walk:

Great Blue Heron

Great Egret

Green Heron

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Eastern Phoebe

Yellow-throated Vireo - Heard only

Red-eyed Vireo - Heard only

Gray Catbird

Cedar Waxwing

American Redstart

If you have not registered yet, please do so. The registration form is

We will have book sales tables set up in the lobby, but the number of
donated books is a little low so far this year. If you have books to
donate, please contact me for pickup or bring them to the Paper Session,
early in the day if possible.

Thank you and see you in three weeks,

[mou-net] Paper Session Book Sale

2015-08-24 Thread Roy Zimmerman
Good morning fellow MOU members.

First of all many thanks to all of you who have generously donated books
for past book sales and to those of you who have supported the MOU and
added to your bird library by purchasing these books. This is an important
source of income for the MOU averaging approximately $1,000 per year the
last few years. This income helps us fund the many projects we support in
the interest of bird education, conservation, etc. Also, thanks to John
Moriarty for coordinating the paper session book sale the last few years
and to Denny and Barb Martin for helping for several years before that.

John has indicated that he will not be able to coordinate the book sale
this year, so we need a new volunteer or volunteers to help us with this.
The responsibilities of this coordinator include soliciting and collecting
books from donors throughout the year (A number of traveling birders around
the state have traditionally helped with this.), pricing the books, getting
the books to the Bell Museum the day of the paper session (December 5,
2015, this year), staffing the book table and selling the books the day of
the paper session.

We have a place for storing books prior to the paper session and John
Moriarty has indicated that he would assist the new volunteer (-s) as
needed.

Please contact me if you would be willing to help us as our book sale
coordinator. Maybe several of you could form a team to do this.

Also, the paper session is only four months away. If you have books to
donate, please contact me and we will try to arrange to collect them.

Many thanks,

Roy Zimmerman

[mou-net] Wright County Prothonotary Warbler

2015-06-14 Thread Roy Zimmerman
Yesterday I entered a Prothonotary Warbler sighting into the MOU database.
I did not realize at the time I found the bird that it was out of range and
would probably be a first county record. I got a couple of calls asking me
about the bird. Here are the details.

At Lake Maria State Park drive toward the boat landing. Go past the rare
turtle crossing sign (A snapping turtle working a nest in the road
yesterday, but no Blandings.) to the intersection where you would turn left
to go to the boat landing. There is a pond that extends to the right from
this intersection. I heard the bird across the pond in the woods maybe 50
yards to the right of this intersection. Prothonotary is one of the
warblers I can hear and to me it had the distinctive cheep cheep cheep
call, much slower and more melodic than the calling swamp sparrows. I
never saw the bird but listened to it call repeatedly for 10 minutes.

I am not 100 % certain that this is what I had and would welcome others
taking a look/ listen for another opinion. Good luck.

Otherwise
I turned up the same but more(a few species less) of 21 warbler species that
I saw
yesterday: Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Golden-winged, Blue-winged,
Black-and-white, Tennessee(big increase in these compared to yesterday),
Orange-crowned, Nashville, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Cape
May, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Blackburnian, Yellow, Chestnut-sided,
Blackpoll, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green, and Wilson's.
Other arrivals included Red-eyed Vireo and Henslow's Sparrow(singing
from remaining limb in burnt grassland).

Hi Roy Zimmerman.  I hope you're enjoying leading the MOU.

I am writing to ask if the MOU can help support the Bell Museum achieve our
dream of a new facility next to the St Paul campus.  As you know, we have
tried unsuccessfully several times to get a new museum building.  This
legislative meeting we feel that we have the strongest support ever in both
house and senate, and our hopes for a new museum plus planetarium building are
high.  But as you know, politics, like rare birds, can turn up anywhere.

I am hoping that you can share with your members and post on your website a
link to the Bell Museum's advisory board
http://www.bellmuseum.umn.edu/Information/AdvisoryBoard/index.htm, where many
of the details of how citizens can help, and send out the attached brochure.

We think it is very important that legislators hear from as many citizens as
possible, and given the long history of the Bell and MOU, we hope we can
garner your support.  We share a strong desire and vision of an
environmentally educated public, and the MOU is one of Minnesota's great
examples.

Feel free to contact me or the board chair Steve Birke.

I hope to see you at a future MOU annual meeting at the new site!

Bird was still present at 3pm calling in dense foliage, listened to by several

Thanks to all who have made the effort to confirm this bird's identity, and
a special thanks to John Zakelj for the great photo.

Thanks to the postings by Julian Sellers and Doug Kieser, I was able to get
a
recognizable photo of the Kentucky Warbler.  I posted it on MOU's recently
seen gallery:
http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl?op=rare

As stated by Doug, this bird was singing persistently and loudly, but was
rather difficult to spot.

[mou-net] Fw: [mou-net] Westwood Bird Walk

2013-05-14 Thread roy zimmerman
Among the birds we saw this morning: green heron, broad-winged hawk, Virginia
rail, sora, solitary sandpiper, ruby-throated hummingbird, empidonax flycatcher
(We decided it was an alder?), warbling vireo, numerous blue-headd vireos,
house wren, marsh wren, winter wren, several Swainson's thrushes, gray catbird,
15 warblers (Tennessee, orange-crowned, Nashville, yellow, chestnut-sided,
magnolia, yellow-rumped, palm, blackpoll, blacd-and-white, American redstart,
ovenbird, northern waterthrush, common yellowthroat, Wilson's), 8 sparrows
(chipping, clay-colored, song, Lincoln's, swamp, white-throated, Harris's,
white-crowned), rose-breasted grosbeak, Baltimore oriole.

After Westwood I went down to Robert's Bird Sanctuary and refound the hooded
warbler singing and feeding in the wet area opposite the cemetery along the
main trail, near the plastic walk.

To answer Julian's question, while I watched the mockingbird, it was acting
normally like a mockingbird.  No evidence of a problem, shaking the head, or
anything else.

Between 9:45 and 10:15 this morning I observed a Northern Mockingbird in the
Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary in St. Paul.  It was hanging around in the rows

ground, then it flew to the nearby cottonwoods on the east side of the main
path.  It repeatedly shook its head, as if trying to free itself from a
thread or something (which I could not see) around its neck.

The
sanctuary is between Mounds Park and downtown St. Paul’s Lowertown.
Enter “Commercial St E 4th St, St Paul, MN” to Google Maps.  The
entrance is from a small parking lot at that intersection.  To get there
you have to take Commercial Street from Mounds Blvd (E 4th street is blocked
  due to construction).

I’ve been going to BVNS this spring to check for
activity at the kestrel nest box that St. Paul Audubon placed there in the
winter of 2012.  Last spring a pair of kestrels fledged five young.
This year, I think the box is empty.

[mou-net] Fw: [mou-net] Westwood Birdwalk

2013-05-07 Thread roy zimmerman
A dozen or so of us had a nice walk in the perfect 70 - 75 degree spring
morning.  We found a total of 62 species.  Highlights included:

8 species of warbler: orange-crowned, yellow-rumped, yellow, American redstart,
northern waterthrush, Nashville, palm, black-and-white.

American bittern flushed from the reeds near the north viewing platform.  After
we walked past the bird returned to this area.

Two great horned owlets, one standing on the nest and eyeing us intently, the
other standing on a limb below the nest flexing its wings.

Plus green heron, sharp-shinned hawk, tree, cliff, and barn swallows, marsh
wren, ruby-crowned kinglet, white-throated, song, swamp, and American tree
sparrows, pileated woodpecker, least flycatcher, gray catbird, Forster's tern,
American kestrel, 9 kinds of duck.

I watched the ibis for ten minutes then slowly got out of my car.  I took one
lousy photo, set my scope up and got a brief, very good look through my scope,
then it flew calling beyond the trees to the SE.  No trace of white or red on
the face.  I believe it is a glossy.

[mou-net] Ramsey County: No Nutcracker but a Greater White-Fronted Goose

2012-11-03 Thread roy zimmerman
I looked this afternoon for the Clark's nutcracker: no sign of it.  I went to
turn around one block east and then one block north of the Hodgson/ CR I
intersection and spotted a few Canada geese at a small pond.  Looking them over
I saw one greater white-fronted goose.

Also today between Turtle Lake, White Bear Lake, and Vadnais Lake: pied-billed
grebe, common loons, mallards, common goldeneyes, ring-necked ducks, hooded
mergansers, redheads, canvasback, trumpeter swans, double-crested cormorant.
