[mou] Ross's Goose in Duluth
There appears to be a Ross's goose on the lawn of the old Stora Enso factory now called New Page across the highway from Super One Foods in the west end of Duluth. It is mulling around with some canadian geese. There is extensive grassy areas in front of this big paper mill, including a soccer field. Shawn Zierman. **Play online games for FREE at Games.com! [mou] Ross's Goose still present/Carver County
The Ross's Goose was still at the Eden Lake Elementary ball fields at 5:30 this evening. Unfortunately as I was driving off, there was a 3 year old that started chasing the Canada Geese. They didn't seem interested in flying, so maybe they'll hang around for the night. Carver Park Reserve and Chaska Lake turned up the usual waterfowl this morning. Besides that it was probably the best Golden-crowned Kinglet day I have ever had (6 at Carver Park and 3 at Chaska Lake outnumbering Ruby-crowned at both locations). Otherwise there were the usual late-fall migrants: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Hermit Thrush, Fox Sparrow, and American Tree Sparrow. At the Chevalle wetlands in Chaska there were still 2 Lesser Yellowlegs and loads of Red-winged Blackbird. John _ Want to read Hotmail messages in Outlook? [mou] Ross's Goose X Snow Goose probable hybrid, Dakota Co.
Sat. May 17 - 8:00am. SW corner of Cliff Rd and Biscayne in Inver Grove Heights. Agricultural field. Donn, Kathy, Laura Mattsson and I observed what appeared to be a white morph adult Ross's Goose feeding with about 20 Canadas and a few Mallards. Scoped views showed that the bird was mostly Ross's-like (90?), but had the following features that suggested Snow Goose genes: - bill was intermediate in size, shape and color but closer to Ross's, i.e., a bit too large, not quite perfectly triangular and a bit too much orange, with just a hint of a grin patch. Also, the line formed by the base of the bill and facial feathering was just slightly bowed forward, not perfectly vertical as expected in pure Ross's. - head shape was intermediate but closer to Ross's, i.e., mostly round but just a bit oblong. - neck was just a bit long for a pure Ross's, i.e. it mostly looked very short but occasionally the bird extended it more than expected for pure Ross's. The bird was about 125 m away and could easily have been ID'd as a Ross's without scoped views. Traffic made it difficult to attempt digiscoping, thus no photos. [mou] Ross's Goose? Lake Vadnais
This morning we saw this goose in the western section of Lake Vadnais, right along the road off Rice Street. Is this a Ross's goose or some type of domestic goose? I've never seen a Ross's up close but it looks like one except it has a bit of black on the back of its neck. It must have flown in sometime yesterday afternoon or last night, it was not there yesterday morning. I've posted some photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gailw/sets/72157604914069638 Would appreciate some ID help. Thanks! Thanks everyone for taking the time to look at the photos and share opinions. The consensus is domestic goose of some sort. [mou] Ross's Goose near Two Harbors, Lake Co.
This afternoon I found an immature Ross's Goose west of Two Harbors along the Stanley Road (CR 9). It was with a flock of Cackling and Canada Geese in a farm field on the south side of the road, 3.2 miles west of the Highway 61 4-lane expressway. The Stanley Road crosses the expressway near the Ford dealership. In addition to the 20+ migrating Black-backed Woodpeckers seen today from the Hawk Ridge main overlook, yesterday Janet Riegle found a female Black-backed in the red pine woods at Hawk Ridge, along the Superior Hiking Trail north of Skyline Drive. The nice folks in the Cottonwood County Bird Club let me join them for their CBC last Monday and I found a Ross's Goose on Fish Lake in Cottonwood county. This lake isn't too far from Mountain Lake. To get there, go SW on Hwy. 60 to Bingham Lake and go south on Cottonwood Cty. 2 until it dead ends where it intersects with Cty. 17. Continue south on a gravel road (I think it 520th ave.) about a mile until you come to Fish Lake. There's a short trail that you can walk down to the lake and you can scope the open water. The Ross's was in with a larger flock of Canada Geese. Hope this helps - let me know if you find it. Brian Smith __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [mou] Ross's Goose still at Hiawatha Park
I relocated the Ross's Goose today, Tuesday November 22nd, around lunchtime at Hiwatha Park in Minneapolis. The goose was with the hundreds of Canadas on the golf course though fortunately there were still golfers playing and the flock flew out onto the pond just after I arrived. The Ross's was easily located and seen once on the water from the east side of the pond off of 28th Ave S. Robert Ellis

I just went to both Lake Nakomis and Lake Hiawatha this morning from 9:30-10:30. The ROSS'S GOOSE is still at Hiawatha. However, the golf course was too busy to briefly walk through. The best spot to see it is the south end. Also at the south end, I briefly saw an AMERICAN COOT (by the weeds) and 3 COMMON MERGANSERS. Also, at Lake Nakomis: Flock of 5 NORTHERN SHOVELRS (1 male, 4 females) and a COMMON LOON (isn't it a bit late for these two species to be migrating through?) There were also two very small, fast-flying ducks flying low to the water at Lake Nakomis, I couldn't tell what they were. [mou] Ross's Goose, Snow Bunting, L. Hiawatha
Sunday morning (Nov 13) at 11:00 the Ross's Goose was still present on Lake Hiawatha (Minneapolis). It was in the large flock of geese at the northwest end of the lake. I also saw what I'm pretty sure is a Snow Bunting along the west side of the lake. It flushed from the unmowed grass and weeds along the golf course side of the dyke. Plumage was distinctive and I heard the didididi call as it flew off. I don't know if this is an interesting sighting for this area. I went back 30 minutes later but couldn't relocate it. [mou] Ross's Goose, L. Hiawatha
I showed up at 2:15PM today and the bird was not there. A large flock of Canada Geese took flight from Lake Nokomis and the Ross's Goose was among them. Suprisingly, the bird came to shore. I was waiting with my camera and got a couple of decent shots. The link is one of the better ones: http://www.naturepixels.com/images/ross_goose1.jpg The bird was sitting on the shore preening when I left at 3:45PM - Saturday. Great find Bruce. [mou] Ross's goose in Wright County
My dad and I were on our way to go fishing at Beebe Lake, and much to surprise, I discovered a lone Ross's goose sitting beside a farmer's pond. The bird was still there as of 6:00 P.M. tonight. The directions are - From the intersection of county road 19 and county road 34 in the city of Hanover (Wright county - 34 is also called Beebe Lake Road) Follow county road 34 west as if going to the city of Buffalo. Follow approximately 3 miles to Ibarra Avenue. (point of reference - there is an old school house converted to a home on the right side of the intersection) Take a right on Ibarra (a dirt road) and follow it. You will see a small trinity church on the left side of the road then the road curves to the left. Soon after the left curve on the right side you will see behind a small line of trees a small lake. The road then curves slightly to the right, and on the right side of the road, past the small lake, is a small farm pond that attracts numerous Canada Geese. The Ross's goose was here alongside the pond. Also, I had the first yellow-rumped warbler of the season in my yard, and the Bonaparte's gulls are now numerous at Steele Lake. Bloodroot is blooming as well. Good birding! Keith Pulles, Wright County
