Re: [mou-net] Eagles
A couple years ago I found a carcass (almost certainly a sturgeon) on the rocks on the lake side of Canal Park near the parking lot near the Maritime museum. By the time I found it it was already in pretty bad shape. I got a couple photos but haven’t been compelled to share them. [mou-net] Eagles Nesting, First Geese & Ducks
(Posted by Jason Frank via moumn.org) The resident pair of Bald Eagles at Farrell WPA/Sweetwater just south of County Road 12 in Lac qui Parle County are either laying or incubating. Their nest is in a cottonwood and is visible through a scope from County Road 9, due south of Bolland Slough. Small numbers of Canada Geese began moving in to Yellow Medicine and Lac qui Parle Counties on Monday, February 13. They are claiming nest sites on the marshes of Sioux Nation WMA a few miles southwest of Canby. This morning I saw a small flock of Common Mergansers moving north through Yellow Medicine County. I had a Brown Creeper on an ash tree in the yard on February 14. Jason Frank Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Eagles on the Cannon River/Dakota Co.
Hi All-- On Halloween, Erika and I watched interesting Bald Eagle behavior along the Cannon River in Dakota Co. in the Carleton College arboretum. An apparent pair perched in trees over the river until a first-year eagle flew overhead. The pair watched the flying bird. Both birds loudly called. Then the apparent adult female chased the male away and joined the young bird over the river. [mou-net] Eagles and Wolves
A friend of mine participates in the annual Duluth deer bow hunt. On Monday evening, he dropped off the carcasses of a large buck and fawn, along with the entrails. I scattered them in my field. When I got home yesterday afternoon, there was not much left. At least 5 Bald Eagles were eating on the carcasses, along with many Ravens and Crows. This morning, my wife and son spotted two Timberwolves taking care of what was left. Unfortunately for me, I was already at work. We saw 150 Bald Eagles, 1 Golden Eagle (on the ice & in the air on the north of the Alma Lock & Dam), 10 swans (4 @ Reeds Landing & 6 at Prescott), a flicker, & flocks & flocks of horned larks (in the Kellogg-Weaver Dunes). In response to the person that observed copulation behavior with Bald Eagles in White Bear... I observed similar behavior with a pair of Bald Eagles in Edina last week, tho it was not a successful copulation, only an attempt by the male which was refused by the female. Its courting season! Re: [mou-net] eagles Highway 36
hi gail-just bad timing. I photographed them the past 2 sundays, late in the afternoon into evening. The female didn't come out of the nest last sunday so only got the top of her head from across the highway but the sunday before that the male and female switched places and for a while I got pics of both standing in the nest being very friendly :) with each other. then the female flew away for a while and the male nestled down in the nest. The male likes to sit on a branch to the right of the nest for quite a while before he either flies away or flies into the nest. BTW I refer to male and female but that's not scientific-I don't know which is which--just assuming. anyway, keep trying--seems like 5pm thru 7pm are good times. good luck. jim - Original Message - From: "Gail Wieberdink" To: Sent: Monday, April 06, 2009 10:24 PM Subject: [mou-net] eagles Highway 36 We have not seen the eagles in the tree or on the nest at Highway 36 & 61 for about two weeks. Re: [mou-net] eagles and hooded mergansers at Red Rock, Ramsey Co
Most of the Red Rock eagles were gone this morning. I counted about 15 - almost all immatures in groups of 3 - 4. It's interesting that the last of the ice also disappeared last night. Meanwhile, new birds have arrived. Yesterday evening, I saw two egrets, a pelican and a nice variety of ducks, mostly out on the larger Pig's Eye Lake, just north of Red Rock. And it was exciting to see a huge vee of about 100 tundra swans calling high overhead, heading on past downtown St. Paul. [mou-net] eagles and hooded mergansers at Red Rock, Ramsey Co
This morning, between 8 - 9 at Red Rock Lake (SE corner, Ramsey Co), I saw fewer eagles than last week, but still well over 50. I was particularly impressed by a single tree which held 23 bald eagles, most of them mature. I wonder why so many mature eagles are still roosting together instead of nesting? Maybe this is a feeding station on their way north? I just hope the dead carp in Red Rock Lake are safe for them to eat. Not far from the tree with the 23 eagles were another 15 - 20 eagles along the shore, with this group having more immatures. At one point, about 10 immatures took flight, chasing each other like rowdy ungainly teenagers trying out their huge broad wings. Also noteworthy were over 50 hooded mergansers spread out along the length of Red Rock Lake. Many were fishing quietly in mated pairs, while some were in groups of 4 - 5 males with a single female. The males were bobbing their brightly marked hooded heads, presumably trying to get the attention of the single female. Directions: take Maxwell exit off Hwy 61 (about half mile north of I-494), follow Maxwell to Red Rock Road, then Red Rock Rd past the west side of Gerdau Ameristeel. The tree with the 23 eagles was about halfway down the lake, between the lake and Hwy 61.
