[mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow and Yellow-headed Blackbird in Two Harbors
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow that was originally reported by Sharon Lind on Friday and then seen again by Bruce Munson on Saturday is still present as of 8:00 A.M this morning in Two Harbors. Someone has been spreading seed in the first space of a parking lot at the corner of 6th Street and South Avenue and that is where the bird was sited. The YHBB was seen at the same location this morning. I will post a photo of the immature male / female (not sure which but believe it's the former due to the presence of a white wing patch) later today. I plan to stay a bit longer to try to get a photo of the Tree Sparrow as well. There was also a clay-colored sparrow present at the same feeding area. [mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow in Duluth
Found mid-day yesterday by Jim Lind in the garden area of the Essentia clinic at the SE corner of 4th Ave East & 1st Street; it was then relocated later in the day in the alley between 3rd & 4th Avenues E and between 1st & 2nd Streets. I then saw it this morning, May 9, between 9:30 and 10:00 at both sites. It didn’t seem to be associating with any other sparrows although there were both White-throateds and House Sparrows nearby. [mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow in Two Harbors, Lake County
This afternoon I found a Eurasian Tree Sparrow in downtown Two Harbors. I originally saw it at about 3 pm with a flock of House Sparrows at 2nd Avenue and Waterfront Drive, in the cedar hedgerow next to the parking lot of the NAPA auto parts store. I relocated it about 45 minutes later in the backyard of 512 4th Ave, but it then flew back south towards 2nd Ave. Bruce Munson and Alex Lamoreaux relocated it at last light at about 4:30 pm in the tall cedars in front of the post office at 1st Avenue and Waterfront Drive. Another spot that might be worth checking is the ground feeder at Waterfront Drive and South Avenue, between the Do North Pizzaria and black locomotive train. House Sparrows often feed there and roost in the blue spruces around the parking lot. There are other people feeding birds in the area, and it may simply be moving around more. Eurasian Tree Sparrow still present in Dakota County this morning at 9:10am. Many thanks to Andrew Smith for first spotting the bird and also to the CBC; partially to credit for this find. I would also like to thank the many other MOU birders who posted excellent information. And also appreciate the kindness of the owner and neighbors for allowing the invasion of more vehicles than usual. Location easy to find. Bird is favoring the blue tube feeder so positioning on that view is your best bet. When the bird showed up this morning I was right next to Bob Janssen. [mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow: Dakota County
The Eurasian Tree Sparrow found by Andrew Smith was still present this morning. For those who want to use GPS when looking for this bird, the address is 15620 197th St. E. This is the gray house on the corner of 197th and Orr Ave. However, to get a good view of the feeders it's best to turn the corner onto Orr and then drive a little south of the house. This bird also likes to roost in a large juniper at the corner of the house to the left of the feeders. Of course, it's harder to find it in the juniper than when it comes to the feeders. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow allowed a couple of looks this morning between 11:15 an 11:30. In spite of the large number of House Sparrows and the flurry of activity from Blue Jay action, the bird was was not terribly hard to pick out when presenting its profile. The extensive white on the cheek, and its black splotch, caught the eye, registering the bird as "different". The first appearance was fleeting. with the bird perching on the outside of the broad conifer next to and south of, the feeders on the southeast side of the house. The bird quickly retreated out of sight around and into the tree, but soon grabbed a spot on one of the tank feeders. It perched long enough to feed for a bit, and also to give a look at its narrow white collar. The crown was clearly russet brown rather than gray. Thank you, to all who posted; this was a life bird for me. Linda Whyte Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow/Dakota Co.
Hi All— Yesterday, Gerald Hoekstra and I saw the Eurasian Tree Sparrow being reported near Hastings in Dakota Co. We both were able to take photographs, which are on my blog this morning: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com Conditions were not ideal for photography. I find digital photography difficult in extreme frigid weather—temperatures were -5 degrees, not counting the wind chill. Blue Jays bullied the House Sparrows and the Eurasian Tree Sparrow away from the feeders, so the birds only spent a few seconds at the feeders at any one time. As per the wishes of the home owners, we took photos from the street, so closeup shots were not possible. Nevertheless, Eurasian Tree Sparrow was a lifer for Gerry and new for my North American list. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com " the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. (Posted by Linda Sparling via moumn.org) Monday, December 29 at about 1:00 the sparrow was seen by three observers at the feeders of the previously given location. [mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow--- Dakota County
(Posted by Andrew D. Smith via moumn.org) Out participating in the Hastings-Etter CBC yesterday, I discovered an Eurasian Tree Sparrow in Ravenna Twp. It was coming to a feeder, and although the homeowners like feeding and enjoy birds, they had been unaware of this birds' presence. Whether it has been present for some time, or came in with yesterday's heavy weather is unknown. This morning, this observation was corroborated by Bob Dunlap, Chris and John Hockema, and Tom Tustison. This is a very frustrating bird. All views have been very brief, typically less than 10 seconds, and the bird can go into cover for extended periods. Much patience is required. Mornings appear to be the best time to watch, as yesterday afternoon there were very few birds coming in. Also, it associates with a large group of House Sparrows (50+), and can be difficult to pick out during a feeding frenzy. We found a scope was very helpful in getting a good look. The homeowners have graciously allowed for visitors. BUT, please know this means you can view their feeders from the street ONLY. Do not go into their yard or any of the adjacent properties for any reasons. This little neighborhood seems to be made up of folks that value their privacy. Across the street a neighbor has a message tacked to an antique wagon: "We don't call 911". Any observers should be respectful of the other local homeowner's properties at all times. Directions: From Hastings, head south on 316, and turn right on 190th St. Take an almost immediate left on Orlando Ave. Follow Orlando 3/4 of a mile to 197th St. E, and turn left. Go about a block, and the road turns right and becomes Orr Ave. (Sorry, I did not note a house number.) The feeders will be on your right, at the gray house, and are pretty obvious. The sparrow can appear at any of the 3 feeding stations, or on the ground. Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow - Yellow Medicine County 6/7/2014
Hi, Late this afternoon Scott Meyer and I found a Eurasian Tree Sparrow in western Yellow Medicine County. It was at the bridge over Florida Creek on 140th Street, just north of 250th Ave, about two miles west of county 15 and 3 miles north of MN 68; the same location as the Say's Phoebe from a few years ago. It was first seen on the bridge railing as we approached from the south, the chestnut cap was immediately obvious, and Scott called out "Eurasian Tree Sparrow!". Over the next hour or so we saw the bird many tmes, but generally for just a few seconds before it would disappear into the leaves or under the bridge. It was usually accompanied by two male House Sparrows, providing good opportunities for comparison, the bird was noticeably smaller than the House Sparrows, with a reddish brown crown, white cheek patch with a black spot, and white collar. Photographs were obtained but won't be available until late tomorrow. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow did not stray far from the bridge for the entire time we were present, and was observed to to fly under the bridge several times. Hi folks, The Crookston Eurasian Tree Sparrow was last seen on Tuesday, April 22nd. [mou-net] EURASIAN TREE SPARROW, Passer montanus, Polk County, 4/15/14
I was fortunate enough to spot and photograph an adult EURASIAN TREE SPARROW at the bird feeders on the University of Minnesota Crookston campus this afternoon. John Loegering and Sandy Aubol were able to come and take photographs as well. The bird was foraging with dark-eyed juncos, a fox sparrow, and house sparrows. The bird was noticeably more petite in overall size and bill size than adjacent house sparrows, with a back patterning more in line with what I would expect with a chipping sparrow. Rufous cap and black cheek dots immediately set the bird apart from other sparrows. The bird was close enough to identify naked-eye. NOTE: If you intend to look for this bird, please be aware that campus is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for a holiday weekend. Campus will be open tomorrow from 8AM to 5PM, and normal scheduling will resume on Monday, 4/21/14. The bird is viewable without entering the buildings, however, please email me (vl...@crk.umn.edu) if you intend to visit so I can give you additional instructions.
