This past weekend I took a little trip this weekend and on Sunday found
marbled godwits and a little blue heron near the little gazebo.

I took my bike and explored all the paths, it was pretty awesome.

Lots of other ducks as well, including eared and western grebes.

Just a note: The DNR official said usually no one is allowed on the roads
within the North
Ottawa Impound, but, they have relaxed this rule a bit concerning recent events
(bird
sightings). They would prefer that drivers only go on the main 250th Str. road
and the
middle crossroad which means : Stay off the 2 tire track trails. Also, there
has been some
concern about people driving to fast to rush upon a recent sighting. When this
happens it is
a safety concern and it spooks the birds up. Just remember to follow good
birding ethics and
this spot may be reserved for future birding, and, remember the DNR is keeping
close tabs
on how this is all playing out. If we mess it up it may be closed off. Keep up

Little Blue Heron and Snowy Plover present at 7:00. Enter from the East on
250th (middle
road into impoundment). Water is rising but there is plenty of shoreline. Look
to the North
as you enter past the water gate. Many other shore birds present but the Snowy
and Cattle
Egrets were not found. Glossy Ibis was at the first crossing road to the South
about half way
down on the West side of road.

Late afternoon was an interesting trip. went to find American Golden Plovers
and found 24 of them just across the border in Traverse County. However, did
have a Black Crowned Night Heron fly in front of me as I was leaving for the
evening. Always an interesting visit out to the Impoundment. Thanks to Wayne
Perala for posting about the Plovers this weekend.

[mou-net] North Ottawa Impoundment, Grant County, and environs

2016-03-22 Thread Betsy Beneke
Hi All!

I took a little birding trip today, and headed west to Grant County and the
North Ottawa Impoundment, via Elbow Lake, Nashua, Tintah, Herman and back
home through Alexandria.

*Wilkin County*
On the way TO North Ottawa Impoundment, just at the west edge of Nashua,
which is in Wilkin County, near the intersection of Hwys. 55 and 9, in a
corn stubble field on the west edge of the sugar beet relay station, there
was a huge mixed flock of tundra swans and white-fronted geese. See my
ebird list for details.

*Grant County*
I spent approximately two hours at the North Ottawa Impoundment in Grant
County, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. See my ebird list for details. It's
"so" recent, it hasn't been approved/published yet, as I compose this
email. Not a lot of activity so far; mallards were stealing the show. A
few tundra swans, a few pintails, and a very few wood ducks and shovelers.
Almost no divers yet, other than a couple of pairs of redheads and a single
drake bufflehead. It's only going to get better!

*Grant/Douglas County*
Along the north side of Hwy. 27 at the Grant/Douglas County line there was
a flock (300-400) of ring-billed gulls - half were in Douglas County, half
were in Grant County. Not sure why the separation, other than a gravel
road? Most seemed to be resting in a corn stubble field. Rigors of
migration - you plop down where your energy runs out, and you see friends?

*General Comments*
All my photographic efforts at the impoundment were thwarted by some guy in
a red Ford Explorer who was zooming around on all the dike roads at 40-50
mph, flushing all the birds. Aarrgghhh!!! I think he was an "employee" of
someone - seemed to be stopping/checking stations with gauges, etc. He was
nice, waved every time he went by me, although I'm not sure if it was an
"apologetic" wave, or just being friendly. He may not have realized how
disruptive his activities were. Or if he did, the waves were his way of
saying, "Sorry - just doing my job - and I have to keep moving."
Obviously, not a "federal" government employee...ha!

Don't cha just LOVE spring?

[mou-net] North Ottawa impoundment, Grant Co

2014-07-25 Thread Kim R Eckert
A total of 17 shorebird species were seen here today by the Minn Birding
Weekends group. Among these were American Avocet, Upland Sandpiper, Marbled
Godwit, Sanderling, and Buff-breasted Sandpiper. Most of these were along the
flooded east-west road that goes E from the Traverse Co line, and along the N
side of the impoundment 1/2 mile E of the county line. There were virtually no
other shorebirds or mudflats that we found elsewhere in western Grant and
Traverse counties, although there were 1 Red necked and 3 Wilson's phalaropes
at the Graceville sewage ponds in Big Stone Co, bringing our day's shorebird
total to 19 species.

[mou-net] North Ottawa Impoundment - WF Ibis, Cattle Egret

2014-05-22 Thread Bill
While searching the impoundment this evening about 7:45pm, three White-faced
Ibis flew up from the south end of the impoundment and headed north. After
more searching, they we not relocated.

Also seen were two Cattle Egrets tucked in the cattails south of the road that
divides the impoundment.

The previously reported Red Knots were not found either.

there were 5 sps of grebes (only missing Clark's), two American Avocets (in
the far NE corner), and a good assortment of geese: 5 Ross's, 69 Snow, and
34 Greater White-fronted.

[mou-net] North Ottawa Impoundment - Grant County

2011-08-31 Thread Alex Watson
Today in the dead trees described by Bob E. earlier there was a Prairie
Falcon and a Swanson's Hawk.

I had prairie falcon on the mind, expecting I would see one, and initially
ID'd the Swanson's as the falcon, ignoring the other raptor in the tree!
Later I read in my Raptors of North America book how a Juvenile Swanson's
looks like a Prairie Falcon. I feel lucky to have had the chance to find
that out the hard way.

It was fun to watch the hawk perch close to the falcon, causing it to move
to a different portion of the tree. For about 10 minutes, the hawk pushed
the falcon around until they both took flight, going in different
directions.

Other birds of interest were Western Grebes, ~120 Great Egrets (could not
find a snowy though I tried), many GB Herons, 4 Avocets, Baird's Sandpipers,
there were about 6 species of Shorebird that I could separate including all
the peeps.
