[mou-net] Red shouldered hawk big stone county

2016-08-13 Thread Brad Abendroth
Only Janssen and Cahlander have it ticked. I did the bonanza loop trail at
big stone lake state park and heard crow mobbing and went to investigate at
the furthest part of the loop i heard the hawk vocalizing many times at 7
to 10 second clips. Heard only but with the crows mobbing it and unlikely
blue jay calling that often and duration I am ticking it

[mou-net] Red-shouldered Hawk, Sapsucker

2016-01-19 Thread Paul and JoAnn Gunderson
Hi Birders,

This morning we had an adult Red-shouldered Hawk land on one of our bird
feeders (about 20 feet from our patio door). It perched there for 20 or 30
seconds before flying off to a tree in the woods on the edge of our yard. It
remained there for several minutes before flying off.

Yesterday we had a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker land on the trunk of a
sugar maple outside of our kitchen window. After a minute or so it was joined
by a male Red-bellied Woodpecker on the opposite side of the trunk. It was fun
to see them both so close to each other. We've had the sapsuckers nesting in
aspens on our property but have never seen them visit during the winter. We've
lived here since 1985.

Good birding,

2015-01-13 Thread danerika
Hi All—

For the first time since 19 November, a Red-shouldered Hawk perched over
our banding area near Dundas, Rice Co. (We have not been banding in the
frigid weather.) Curiously, unlike during the previous visits, the local
small birds repeatedly attacked the hawk. Photos are on my blog this
morning….

Hi All—

A Red-shouldered Hawk has been hanging out above the feeders for the last
week at our Dundas banding station. The small birds do not appear to be
concerned, and we suspect the hawk may be feeding on squirrels—though we
have not seen it take any prey.

A photograph graces my blog this morning:

Just saw a Red-shouldered Hawk perched on a wire (looked to be in hunting
mode) on Tamarack Drive, just north of Hennepin Co. Rd 24 in Medina.

Also, numerous juncos and Fox Sparrows around - the type of birds that
often hit windows during migration. It is time to make your home windows as
safe as possible against deadly bird strikes.

[mou-net] Red-shouldered Hawk - Chisago County

2014-02-10 Thread Stenseng, Rubin J.
We had a Red-shouldered Hawk visit our suet feeders today. We live along the
St. Croix River below Taylors Falls. This is good habitat for these hawks and
they do visit our open suet feeder in the winter from time to time. This one
was interested in suet (mostly) and a piece of beef kidney that was in the suet
that I buy from a butcher shop in the area. My apologies if anyone is offended
by the food item in one photo.

There's a red-shouldered hawk soaring over Donovan Lake about 4 miles east of
St. Cloud.  First I've seen since December.  A northern harrier was in this
same general area earlier this morning.

A pair of red-tailed hawks may be setting up house-keeping, along with the pair
of bald eagles I'm told have been in residence for several years.  Raptor alley?

[mou-net] Red-shouldered Hawk, Anoka County

2011-11-21 Thread Erika Sitz
I just spent 45 minutes watching a beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk in the back
yard, mostly perched, but it gave me great views of the colorful wings as it
flew a couple times. It took it about 5 min after I first saw it to get a
vole, and half that time to polish it off. Then it just sat and looked
around. Small birds were at all the feeders and ignoring it. After about
15 min, one squirrel came out and then two more. I kept mentally urging it
to go for the entrée, but, unfortunately, it must have been in the
small-plates mode. We saw one last winter for the first time in over 30
years here. Hope it hangs around. Would be nice to see it in the summer in
the front yard dining on the pocket gopher messing up the
bergamot/spiderwort patch by the driveway.

[mou-net] Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Shrike, Bohemian Waxwings - Cook County

2009-10-17 Thread Cameron Rutt
A seemingly ordinary roadside pull-off along the Sawbill Trail, Tofte,
today (10/17), proved to be a worthy location for a day-long survey.
At 1045, an adult Red-shouldered Hawk (RSHA) was seen joining two
Red-tailed Hawks nearby, providing some nice looks before heading
south. This was my first run-in with this species along the North
Shore for the fall. Not to be outdone, I also had a Northern Shrike
(flyby) and a handful of Bohemian Waxwings that cooperatively landed
in some adjacent vegetation, both personal firsts for the fall. The
day also featured a nice Common Raven passage, with 133 in all.

Overall, the raptor migration today was pretty impressive; the two
other counters and I had a combined total of 24 Golden Eagles. I was
fortunate enough to be positioned in the middle of a nice flight line,
which contained no less than 18 of the Golden Eagles. In fact,
today's and yesterday's (10/16 - Round Mountain, Silvery Bay) raptor
flights have been very nice. My two-day combined totals include ~550
raptors: 113 Bald Eagles, 33 Rough-legged Hawks, and 24 Golden Eagles.
I understand that today was a red-letter day at Hawk Ridge, with 18
Golden Eagles of their own, I believe. But with another batch of
Goldens still on their way - in addition to a RSHA - the very near
future would seem like an optimal time to plan a visit to Hawk Ridge.

Finch flights still have me perplexed. To make matters worse, I've
recently had Purple Finches flying both directions. On the 14th
(Knife River), I had 46 northbound, versus 70 heading south. However,
on the 16th, the situation was reversed: 295 northbound, with only 38
tallied heading south. (!?)

Finally, I noted my first two Tundra Swans of the fall, yesterday, at
Silver Bay.

  Good Birding,

[mou-net] Red-shouldered Hawk, Bass Ponds MNRVNWR, Hennepin Co.

2009-02-11 Thread linda whyte
This morning began with another look at the Varied Thrush in
Roseville. It was spotted briefly at 10:20 among the robins in the
crab-apple trees, on the NW corner of Co2 and Merrill. It disappeared
for a half hour, returning around 10:50 for 10 minutes or so, before
flying into evergreens to the west. Jed Askari found it later, at
around 2 PM, moving with the robins on the south side of Co2. Perhaps
the birds were exercising some caution, as he had also seen a Cooper's
Hawk at the intersection when he arrived.

After the noon hour, a hike at Bass Ponds yielded lovely looks at a
Red-shouldered Hawk on the holding pond with the fishing dock, located
between the largest of the old ponds and the newest pond, next to the
Cedar/77 bridge. We first spotted it flying north over the pond,
whereupon it landed conveniently in a tree at the water's edge. It sat
for a long time, and obliged us with both rear and frontal views,
before taking off directly over the road we were on, and landing in
front of us in a tree on the river side. Upon our approach, it rose
up, gliding past us at tree-top height. After perching once again on
the river side of the road, it circled behind us, passed over the same
pond, and re-alighted in its original tree. It seemed to be checking
out the open water at the edge of the pond, which gave us ample time
to note its tail stripes, its many white speckles, its gorgeous
russet colors blending to blond in the lower regions, and the
contrasting borders on the trailing edge of the wings.

For good raptor measure, we were rewarded with a hunting show by a
Rough-legged Hawk, over the marsh grasses to the south side of the
river. Along the way, we had also noted a pair of pileated
woodpeckers, flying east toward the farm on the bluff; pairs of
downies, hairies, and red-bellieds; and what may be a nest cavity,
with evidence of new excavation in the form of fresh wood chips on the
path. Spring can't be far behind.
