[mou-net] White-winged Crossbills/Redwood County
Hi,Earlier this afternoon I found 8 White-winged Crossbills at the Catholic/Lutheran cemetery just east of Lucan on 250th Street. I lost sight of them when they flew to the farm grove on the north side of 250th where there were some more conifers.Brian Smith Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone General information and guidelines for posting: https://moumn.org/listservice.html Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html During the pandemic, the MOU encourages you to stay safe, practice social distancing, and continue to bird responsibly.

A group of White-winged Crossbills has visited our backyard, observed on a few occasions over the last month. We live in St. Paul, Mac-Grovelamd neighborhood First seen on Jan. 15-16, then again this past week, on Jan. 27. The earlier viewing I would say ~10 + birds, second viewing maybe a bit fewer, ~6. The first viewing I observed both males and females, the later viewing I only spotted females. We have a group of pine trees with many small cones, this is where the birds were foraging. Both I and my neighbor friend who also observed, submitted these to eBird on the earlier occasion, and just my neighbor submitted on this week’s sighting. None of these submissions showed up on eBird rare bird alerts. We are puzzled as to why, not sure what we are doing wrong. I see other local White-winged Crissbill sightings are making the list. I realize this is not an eBird forum but if anyone had any insight on this, we would be interested to know.. I will submit these sightings to the MOU database later today.. An interesting behavior observed is that they do not seem to take great care to grab hold of any given cone and really exhaust it’s contents before moving on—the cones really fall like rain when they are going at it! [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills, Sherburne NWR, Blue Hill Trail
Thanks to Justin Watts, for posting the continued presence of these birds. We found them midway along the East border of the pine stand. The spot was most easily accessed by walking the Blue Hill Trail to the pine stand, then turning right (northward) at the pair of blue "hiking trail" signs. They were feeding intently on the numerous small pine cones near the top of a spruce, raining cone debris onto the ground. We counted at least two males and six females, though others were probably hidden on the opposite side of the tree. The spruce is visible from the path bordering the field, However, it's not directly next to the path. There is a small, bare, deciduous tree with a couple of short conifers at that spot on the path, and a huge white pine (the biggest tree on the east border) that blocks the view of the spruce from the south. Look hard for any motion in place, in a tree loaded with small cones. We saw the birds only because I happened to stop there to mop my watering eyes and running nose, and Rob noticed the motion. (I guess I'll gripe less about "winter" eyes and nose.) Linda Whyte Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Today Annabelle Watts and I relocated a flock of White-Winged Crossbills in Sherburne County along the Blue Hills trail at the refuge. There was about a dozen crossbills quietly feeding near the trail for a good 30 min. The location was very near 45.5035, -93.7185 which is along the fire break road through the evergreens. This flock seems reliable and has probably been present since the CBC for that area. Great to finally see this nemesis of mine! Hi, I took advantage of the break in the snow to take a walk through Oak Hill Cemetery in south Minneapolis, where I found a small flock of 6 White-winged Crossbills (including two bright males) near the rear of the cemetery. Anyone searching for these birds might want to also check the spruces in front of Richfield United Methodist Church, cones have been piling up under these trees for a few days. [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills. Fox Sparrow, Golden Eagles - Winona County
Hello all, Dedrick Benz and I went out around Winona and Houston counties as part of the annual Golden Eagle survey today. We found not only Golden Eagles, but other birds of interest: The first was relocating a FOX SPARROW first found last week by Dedrick and Chris Hockema. This bird is in Wiscoy Valley on Winona County Rd 17. From Highway 76 head west on Co. 17 about 8/10th of a mile. You will come across a farm with the house and barn on either side of the road. Just past look for the sparrow feeding along the side of the road and hanging out in the brush. About 1.2 miles further look for a stand of spruce on the south side of the road. Here we located a flock of c. 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS feeding. The birds flew in as we approached, and later departed toward the west. We located six GOLDEN EAGLES on the day, though two of these may actually have been the same bird seen a couple hours apart. Four of the birds were juveniles and two were adults. All were found in Wiscoy Valley along Co. Rd. 17 except one juvenile which was on Highway 76 about 3/4 of a mile south of the turnoff to 17. If anyone is interested in more specific locations on the birds, feel free to back-channel me. Other birds of interest on the day included Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, Northern Shrike (1), Rough-legged Hawk (2), and Eastern Bluebird. In all, a nice day of winter birding! Around 10:15 this morning I was somewhat surprised to find a small flock (~ 10 birds) of White-winged Crossbills feeding at the top of a white spruce at College Park on the south side of Doswell Ave. a few blocks west of the University of MN-St. Paul campus. The birds were vocalizing frequently until the flock stopped feeding and flew off to the north. There are a lot of white spruces in the area so it's possible the birds could be relocated in some nearby neighborhood. I haven't noticed any other reports of crossbills south of Sherburne County, so perhaps these are the first and a sign of finches to come. -- Bob Dunlap St. Paul, MN Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

I was working in a white spruce stand west of the Sawbill Trail in Cook County on Tuesday when a small flock of White-winged Crossbills flew over and finally landed nearby when I pished. After a number of unsuccessful searches of the New Ulm City Cemetery over this winter, I finally found White-winged Crossbills there this morning. I first found a flock of 4 (one male and three females or immatures) and then about a half hour later a flock of 15 arrived and foraged for several minutes in a couple of spruce trees before flying off. Some other birds seen here were Pine Siskin, Common Redpoll two Golden-crowned Kinglets. [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills, Sibley County
Their southern MN invasion continues: this morning I had a flock of about 25 White-winged Crossbills in the town of Henderson. The birds were feeding in two White Spruce (next to two Norway Spruce which the birds didn't touch) between Fifth St. and Fourth St. about a block south of Main St. (Hwy. 19). [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills, Nicollet County
After not seeing them in Nicollet County since mid-November, this morning a small flock of White-winged Crossbills flew over the Interpretive Center on the south side of campus at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. So far it seems like the majority of southern MN crossbills have been heading southeast, but perhaps now that food supplies are getting used up they will take a turn southwest. [mou-net] White-Winged Crossbills, Mower County
Good Afternoon: Just had a nice flock of around 40 White-Winged Crossbills in the 3 large evergreen trees we share with our neighbors here in our front yard in Austin, Mower County. Were here for a few minutes, eating and chattering away. Most then flew southwest around 200 feet to another neighbors evergreen trees. Have left the area for now. [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills, Winona County
At about noon Monday, I found a flock of about 20 White-winged Crossbills in rural Winona County. I would recommend using Mapquest over Googlemaps for navigational purposes. Googlemaps has roads mislabeled in this case. From the town of Homer, which is just downriver from Winona on Hwy 61, head south on County Road 15. This steep, paved road winds it's way up to farm country, and eventually comes to a T, wherein a left will keep you on 15 and a right will be Pleasant Ridge Rd. At this T, there are a few driveways and fire #s. A quick left (keeping you on 15) will bring you to Fire # 26161. At the south edge of the farmstead, there is a shelterbelt of spruce set back from the road about 50 yards behind a small corral. The birds were foraging in these spruces. I would recommend using Mapquest over Googlemaps for navigational purposes. Googlemaps has roads mislabeled in this case. Note that MapQuest has Pleasant Ridge Rd. labeled as Hm Township Rd 25. [mou-net] White-winged crossbills in Roseville
I saw several white-winged crossbills this afternoon in Roseville - there was a large group that was scattered in the spruces along County Road B2 between Dale and Western Ave., a small group near Central Park, and 2 small groups in spruces along Merrill Street between Howard Johnson Park and Cottontail Park. [mou-net] White-winged Crossbills; NO Black-Backed Woodpecker - Morrison Co. (Cushing)
Following Frank Gosiak's post from last weekend, I headed up to Cushing to look for the Black-backed Woodpecker. Two hours of searching the tamaracks produced nothing but a couple of Hairy's in the Woodpecker family, although there were plenty of trees that had been worked over. However, I was somewhat compensated by seeing a half-dozen White-winged Crossbills in the Black Spruces that are mixed in with the Tamaracks. I also heard them or others several times while searching for the Black-backed Woodpecker. To get to this spot, turn south on CR11 off of Hwy 10 in Cushing. You will immediately come to a snowmobile trail crossing CR11. Pull over on the shoulder (plenty of room), and then follow the snowmobile trail into the tamaracks. Several hundred yards in you will see where the trees have been worked on to the right of the trail. There is a smaller snowmobile trail going left at that point, and the crossbills were seen where the trees end to the right of that secondary trail. Several parties of snowmobiles went through while I was there, so I suspect the Woodpecker may have moved away from the noise deeper into the trees, or may have left the area altogether. [mou-net] White-winged crossbills still at Wilkie Unit
A flock of about 15 white-winged crossbills visited the black spruce grove at Wilkie unit of the MRVNWR this morning. They arrived at 9:30, stayed only a few minutes, and continued off to the north. I waited until 10:25 but they didn't return. No one had posted about this flock/location recently and the last submitted MOU sightings for crossbills at Wilkie was 11/29/08. I wondered if they were still present, but figured with such a reliable food source the odds were good! Diana Doyle S.
