I just confirmed with the Raptor Center that the adult Peregrine from the High
Bridge brought in recently had very advanced Avian Influenza & was humanely
euthanized. Very sorry to hear this. However they did say this was the first
case of AI they’d seen in 2 weeks.

On my walk this morning along the Miss River near the High Bridge, I observed
three Peregrines. One adult was providing food to another falcon (transferred
in the air) and a third bird, juvenile, was feeding on the roof of the Xcel
building.

Re: [mou-net] Peregrine aggression on North Shore

2020-07-31 Thread Brian Tennessen
Some follow up on the Falcon post I submitted last night after we did some
more digging online..

The falcons we observed were both juveniles, so we think this is a case of
sibling rivalry.

Or it could also be a case of something we read where they will do ‘mock
combat’ with one another as a form of practicing.

But what we observed seemed more aggressive and one sided, where the one
was always the instigator...

We read that sibling rivalry can get more intense when food is scarce, but
we observed some consistent successful hunting and the birds all appear
well fed and healthy to our untrained eyes..

I will have to see if I can find a way online to read reports on the
Tettegouche area Falcons...

About a month ago I saw a Peregrine falcon on the top of the Southdale
movie theater eyeing the pigeons flying around. He sat there for about 10
minutes and then I had to get into the theater. Also saw a bald eagle fly
over 50th and France pursued by crows...not really an unusual sight at all

So I wonder if we couldn't have some sort of signs at the ends of the bridge,

it for deer, moose, even turtles (not to mention steep hills and falling rocks,

Re: [mou-net] Peregrine

2012-06-14 Thread linda whyte
Now that's a bit of deja vu! It was only 2 or 3 years ago that I was sent
by the Raptor Center to rescue a Peregrine juvenile in the same area. That
time, the bird was dangerously close to the river, by the bike-path
fencing; some bicyclists and passers-by helped me "herd" it against the
brick wall across from the parking area so I could capture it safely.

The timing of the Friday incident is interesting. Another birder reported
having seen, to her dismay, that a crew of workers with high-power
equipment was apparently cleaning the bridge-supports. Does anyone know the
MNDOT policies regarding nesting raptors in such a situation?

Re: [mou-net] Peregrine

2012-06-14 Thread Klein, Tom R (DNR)
Peregrines used to nest on the High Bridge plant smoke stack until it was
brought down in 2008. (after witnessing the demolition of this iconic landmark,
my young daughter sighed: "St. Paul used to be a unicorn. Now it's just a
horse").

The nesting peregrines were encouraged to move house up river where a nest box
was prepared for them atop the ADM Stackhouse near Randolph and Shepard.
Instead peregrines took up under the High Bridge deck, above the pier that
Linda describes.

Last Friday one of the chicks jumped and had to be rescued from the dog park
below the nest. Monday, I was just leaving the dog park when I saw a male
falcon attempting to gain altitude with a rock pigeon it had just caught. It
managed to crash land on top of the pier where it seemed contented to simply
sit on the struggling pigeon for a good ten minutes. I could not stay to watch
the rest of the story.

On my way out I viewed two osprey checking out the nest platform near the dog
park.
