I agree with Patriek here. I mean, Konami has had such a major influence
in one's life (take me for example: Konami withheld me from good grades
at school, no social and sex life, altered view of the world (if you're
dead->F5 to continue), etc...), that it can be exiting to actually meet
these people. It's like meeting God or JM Jarre (or both in one, in my
case). :-)

Sorry for making a bit fun here, but I'm in a happy mood (my last week

be insulted, except myself (so expect an angry reply from me at this

Because Spanish is one of the biggest (I believe it's the 2nd or 3rd)

government in Spain is not much concerned about learning other languages
since a large part of the world speaks Spanish. Dutch mentality is much
different, since Dutch is not such a big language, we have less people

AW: [EmuSucking] I was right!

1999-08-17 Thread Coen van der Geest

Hi there,

(btw: just got back from Tossa de Mar, Spain = cool and fudeba at some
places).

>NB: emulators are not a guarantee of survival for the MSX system just like
>cyborgs are not a guarantee of survival for the human race.

Above is one of the coolest remarks (and a great metaphor) I read about
this subject.

This is my view on emulators: I myself do not consider emulators
saviours of a system, just look at the PSX and N64 which can be emulated
quite good on a fast PC. An emulator can't give you the feeling what the
emulated computer can do, it's still a "computer inside a computer" (you
can't look into the hardware of the emulated computer, you don't have to
know what is in there) but it adds this extra to the computer which is
emulating.

It's fun using them and developing those emulators (a friend of mine is
a bit of making his own emulator, just for himself), but above all, for
me it's a way to play all those games I ever wanted to play but didn't
want to buy because I was young and didn't have the money to buy games
such as Gradius 3 and Castlevania 4. Isn't it a mighty feeling to say
you have all Megadrive games on 1 CD and you can play them? :-)

Also, most systems nowadays are not available anymore (only on
fleemarkets), let alone the software for it. The term "abandonwarez" can
apply to those games. Now let's say that you're a fan of Gradius/Nemesis
and you want to have all versions of it. You can buy all computers it is
released on and find the preferred Gradius or download an emulator and
the game. Very easy for people who live in the USA if we talk about MSX.
I myself played the NES version of Maze of Galious last year on an
emulator, just because I wanted to play a different Maze of Galious
(which I still consider as one of the best games of all time).

For the sake of nostalgia or completeness, emulators add a usefull
contribution to the computer community. Just to show what a certain
system was all about back then.

The problem is that sound chips like the FM Pac can't be emulated
correctly, since the A/D Convertor of (for example) the SoundBlaster
can't produce FM sounds. It is very hard to emulate the FM Pac, which is
kind of an analogue synth. Compare it with Rebirth emulating the
(analogue) TB303 synth. Emulators like KGen (Megadrive/Genesis) use this
technology. BTW: I love emulators. Great hobby.

It's the western attitude. All western games must be 3D, high tech, blah
blah blah, while the eastern (Japanese) games are more advanced in
gameplay. That's why games as Parappa the Rapper exist. They are more
"daring" in terms of gameplay and then it doesn't have to be really
visually stunning. All space shooters are still 2D essentially (Gradius
Gaiden, Einhander, G-Darius, R-Type Delta (some of them have 3D
backdrops)) and not Starcraft 3D blah.

Since Hideo made Snatcher on different platforms (including PSX), he has
gained some respect for "new" gamers in Japan.

Did you know that the guy who did Konami's Silent Hill worked on Hyper

True true true!!! Look at R-Type Delta, which is still 2D in it's true
form.

>By the way, if you finish GG and continue playing, when you come again to
>8th stage (Formidable Guardians), A NEW BOSS APPEARS after the old ones!!!
>Yeah, Konami did not disappoint me!! 8-D

Question: when will the sound test appear? When you have played 10 hours
in total or continually?

>Castlevania 3D? Oh my god, what a nightmare!!!

I still consider Castlevania: Symphony of the Night one of my favourite
games (it was my first PSX game :-) ), but a 3D update seems to me like
Tomb Raider with a whip and vampires. Nevertheless, the reviews of
Castlevania 64 are rather positive.

Isn't there a 3D Gradius coin-up?

AW: Konami and Microsoft

1999-05-17 Thread Coen van der Geest

Hi there,

>>Konami, a large video game publisher based in Tokyo, will publish
>>Microsoft's games on systems such as Nintendo 64, Sony PlayStation and
>>the Sega Dreamcast, Dow Jones News Service reported Tuesday. Microsoft,
>>meanwhile, will adapt Konami titles for the personal computer. The
>>first titles resulting from the deal will be announced this year.

The same happened to FF7, which was adapted by Eidos for the PC, right?
And what about the Resident Evil series? I only don't know which
Microsoft games there will be to port (a.f.a.i.k. they only made Flight
Simulator?).

Besides, Konami will have an easy time to convert to Dreamcast, since
it's Windows CE based. And doesn't Konami release Gremlin games already
in Japan (Actua Soccer)?

Funny, my favourite software company joining forces with my personal
worst software company (you may consider for yourself which is which :-)
). Hint: Linux rulez. OK, I think it's bad to see a good name such as
Konami linked with a dubious company like Microsoft (think Helloween
files and the Netscape/IE war).

>>Ed Fries, general manager of the Microsoft games business, said the
>>deal will help Microsoft develop new sources of revenue for the titles
>>already selling on the PC.

With other words: make more money and take over a new area of computer
entertainment as they did with the Operating Systems and they still try
to do with the Internet. Scary...

>>Tim Dunley, vice president of marketing at Konami of America in San
>>Mateo, Calif., said more of his company's games such as the
>>multimillion seller ``Metal Gear Solid'' are aimed at adult audiences,
>>making it more sensible to adapt the titles to the PC, which tends to
>>draw older players.

Poy Poy 2 *grin*

>>Both companies also noted that the alliance was a strategy to deal with
>>growing consolidation in the games business.

I agree, but I think Konami could have made wiser decision with an other
company. I think it's a far more better deal for Microsoft since most
modern PC games are too advanced for N64 or PSX (I don't know for DC)
and since Microsoft doesn't release games as regularly as Konami does,
M$ tends to get more money out of it with doing nothing but porting
Konami games. And since the DC and PC games can easily be ported, you
can guess there will be a lot of DC games from Konami in the future.

Also, and this is much more interesting for M$: if the popular Konami
games are available on PC, people won't buy a console but a PC, which
means the console market will be made smaller (in extremis!) and the PC
market will grow, which means: more profit for M$ and their Windows. And
in the end there will be only one system: a PC. Micro$ofts device: "If
you can't beat them, join them".

Maybe that's what they call nostalgia? I agree with you that certain
games will be better on an MSX than on other systems. I still get the
creeps when I play Metal Gear 2 when guards see mee (I did when Metal
Gear (3) Solid was announced, in fact it is the reason I bought a PSX
(that and Konami MSX Antiques vol 1, 2 and 3 )). I think it has
something to do with playing a game for the first time. If you play it
for the second time (and on an other system), you know the storyline
already and you pay attention to other things. Just like a remake of an
old movie or something.

I played Castlevania on the PSX (my first PSX game, because of the audio
CD) and that had that "feeling" again. And later, Metal Gear Solid. It
is the true sequal to MG2-Solid Snake.

Wasn't that Dragon Slayer 2? Dragon Slayer 7 was called Lord Monarch.

But tell me more about those PSX games Dragon Slayer 8 and 9...

Hi there,

yes, you read it well, Cindy Lauper. What has this long gone icon of the
80s to do with MSX? Well, it's simple: she once sung a track for the
Goonies soundtrack. And yes, it's the same music Konami used for their
addictive platformer. For people collecting game music this is a must.

I can make an MP3 of it, if someone is interested, and I try to put it
online somewhere.

Hi there,

You are right about that. They not only "rediscovered" the Music Module,
but also did something else: the use of FM Pac. The FM Pac (or the MSX
Music in particular) was very popular and there was no program to use
it, exept the FM Basic and a terrible program from MSX Engine (was it
called Music Composer??). When FAC released Soundtracker they made a
very wise decision to include MSX Music. Music making was accessible,
and not only for MSX Audio.

>The hype continued with Moonblaster, but not as big as Soundtracker.

Sorry to hear that :) Speaking of Moonblaster... Are there any archives

AW: Nostalgia...

1999-02-10 Thread Coen van der Geest

Hi there,

I don't want to make this a PSX mailinglist, discussing PSX games and
all that :-) but since we are talking about the best softwarehouse on
MSX, I think we ought to talk about their latest effords too.

>Don't kill me but... I don't like Metal Gear Solid. I see no difference
>with the thousands of 3D games already existing.

You're crazy!!! :-) No, It's not that it's a 3D game. Hello, it's Metal
Gear, the best game on MSX. It's in 3D. It's stealth and high
intelligent guards. It's different to those 3D games as Tomb Raider,
it's beautifull, it has got atmosphere and a story to die for. It's the
sequal to the best MSX game ever. Oh man, the sniper gun... It's like
really controlling a sniper gun (if you have a rumble pad)...

All that and it has music from Metal Gear 1 in it.

Talking about the music: I was first a bit dissapointed in the music of
MGS. But later on, I discovered it's great film music instead of game
music. I expected MG2 like music, but what we have is music which sets
atmosphere. And that's what MGS is about: an interactive film. (good
example: when you're in the last building, at the steel factory, you
have very "warm" music).

But it has many connections with MG2: the Helicopter fight, a key which
changes when in different temperatures. But that's because it's a
sequal.

There are even words about Solid Snake being the male Lara Croft, a
computerised sex symbol for female gamers!!!

>But... have you seen Gradius Gaiden? It is a TRUE reason for buying a PSX!

I know, this one is a beauty. And very difficult!! Aargh. I can't
finish it in the easiest mode (*hide*) (I finished Nemesis 3 on MSX).

BTW: Konami's Gradius IV has been released in the arcade halls by now.

AW: Your typical MSX history & hardware setup

1999-02-09 Thread Coen van der Geest

Hi there,

>Tell me about your history.

Nice subject, this, btw.

I have some spare time, so I will now write about myself (yawn).

Despite of being born in 1974, my first encounter with a computer must
be somewhere in 1982 or '83, when my cousin had a ZX Spectrum. I really
liked Scuba Diving on that. Later, I met Arnold Oudshoorn (ex-Moonsoft
in spe) who showed me some great games like Antartic Adventure and Yie
Ar Kung Fu. I was impressed and wanted an MSX. It was not until 1987
that my brother decided to buy a VG8235 MSX2 computer (single sided
discdrive). In between those days, I worked with Apple IIe computers at
school. Very ancient... I still remember the moment the computer
arrived: it was very cold, my hands were frozen and I wanted to use the
computer rightaway, but I couldn't because my hands were frozen.

Anyway, it wouldn't last long until I had my own MSX, a Sony HP700D with
German keyboard (qwertz, in stead of qwerty), some people might have
seen this computer run at fairs, it was the computer with the Return key
missing. Together with this computer, I got Usas.

I recontacted Arnold (who was busy in the demo-scene with Remco
Schrijvers under the name of Moonsoft). He showed me some SCC demos and
games and I was flabbergasted... Really impressed... like... wow! this
is music! I wanted my own SCC cardridge and I traded Usas against
Nemesis 3, which was brand new around that time. A friend of ours, Bert,
well known for the SCSI interface, build in a connector so I could turn
off the Nemesis 3 "boot" and use the SCC for other applications...
(illegal copies?? ehm... no :-) ). Later, Bert build in MSX2+ and
repaired my computer several times.

When the FM Pac was introduced in Japan, Arnold and me got both one via
import and were impressed. Especially games which were quite old like
Greatest Driver, Psycho World (still one of the best MSX games) and
Feedback. At that time, the little documentation we had on MSX Music
Basic we used for making demos with FM music. It didn't work though, it
was too slow. We must have a program for making FM music with a replayer
in ML, so we decided to buy a music program from Engine (the predecessor
of their more popular FM Studio or something like that). It sucked, but
FST was a lot better, still not perfect for FM Pac. And from there we
could make Awesome and with the help of Marco v/d Berg we could make
Awesome 2 with stereo music. This was the first step in the direction of
Moonblaster.

The idea of MoonBlaster started after several problems with FST (the
replayer was too slow, FM Pac was not used good in FST, etc.) Remco
started with MB and I did the beta testing and giving advice and tips
for additions. The rest is MSX history. Too bad Arnold quit Moonsoft
during that time, he bought a Megadrive :-( I think I will call him one
of these days... He has a PSX now.

After MB we wanted to make a game, but it all failed, despite some
promising ideas and tests. Partly to do with not having a graphical man
(Arnold was gone). Some little demo games were made, like Fairplay and
the intro for one of the Sunrise Picturediscs.

In '91 our MSX Club Rijnstreek decided to merge with Genic to become
Stichting Sunrise. Our goal was to give people information by using the
good name of MSX Club Rijnstreek and the quality of the Genic
programmers (Genic had some ... dubious... reputation in the past) and
their magazine. Too bad some ideas didn't work out well (I miss those
club days).

We decided to work on the Sunrise Picturedisc, a demodisc with demos
from all kinds of MSX groups. It was nice to do, but because of school I
had to quit and it was also the end of my MSX activity. The Moonsound
was released using the same development phase as MB, where I had to use
the Moonsound (and I created most of the sounds of the program, it was
exhausting...) But I still have my MSX and I still use it to make music.
I don't have the Moonsound, Remco has it, so I use my FM Pac and MSX
Audio for it. (Remco is now living in the same flat as Ray from 2
Limited)

Now I have the following setup: your standard MSX2 (Sony HBF700D still)
with FM Pac and Music Module (like I said: standard), SD Snatcher + SCC,
Nemesis 3 + SCC, MSX2+ chips, DOS 2.

Great!!! I made that instrument! Synth bass 3! :) Based it on Plucked 3
and made it a lot fatter. I'm flattered.

*sigh* my sole reason to live was to create synth bass 3 :)

I personally prefer the FM sound over the wavetable, because you can
manipulate and create weird effects with it. It's like analogue and
digital synthesisers. People created digital synths to make the sounds
more realistic and close to the original, but then they realised the
analogue sounds are much more sounds of their own in stead of (for
example) a violin. The same can be said about FM and wavetable. It all
depends on what you prefer: realistic sounds or self made sounds.

No, Legend of Heroes was the subtitle of Dragonslayer 6, just as
Sorcerian is Dragonslayer 5. Just look at the logo-screen, just after
