IDE interface trouble with CD-ROM

2001-01-21 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi all,

I've got a little trouble with my IDE interface not
giving access to cd-rom's and would like to ask
for advice...

I have IDE bios 2.01. HD is configured as
master and CD-ROM drive as slave. HD has
4 partitions a: b: c: d: (32 MB each)
f: is the diskdrive
I can access and "dir" every partition and
disk drive.
MSXDOS version 2.20
MSXDOS2.SYS version 2.20
COMMAND2.COM version 2.20
When booting the computer it autodetects
IDE Master: harddisk Mode...
IDE Slave: cd-rom Mode 3 Matushita...
(even thought it's a Creative cd-rom)
then defaults to a: (that's fine).
Afterwards, I load IDECDEX and I get:
CD-ROM on drive E: is available
perfect!
I get into e: "E:" and press return,
they try to make a "dir" from the
prompt and here comes the trouble:
*** disk error
I try to get into the cd-rom through
MultiMente and disk error again.
I have tried it with two different
cd-roms: MSX-Legacy and another cd-rom
stuffed with MSX games.

I have simply tried everything I have
thought of. Any help would be welcome...

Thanks in advance...

Ok, I've just checked your page.
Your NMS 1170/20 barcode reader isn't
a lightpen. Now, I'm pretty sure about
that. I've seen there's no picture available
of a lightpen so I'll take one next week
and upload it to my webpage.

Now, concerning your game cartridge
collection, I gotta say I'm pretty
envious of you! :)
There's a cartridge you say you don't
know what the title is:
"???, of Xain. I forgot the title. Everything in the
game is English, exept the title... Can you imagine?
Well, all I know is that it has quite cool PSG-music"
The title: MIRAI
I have that one!
And I clicked the banner, now you're 10
cents richer!

Well, the Sanyo cartridge the lightpen
is attached to by a cable says
"lightpen unit". But, yes, I do think it's
the same as a barcode-reader because the
drawing of the barcode-reader from the
scanned user manual at the Red Devil
webpage looks the same the Sanyo device.
The Sanyo cartridge has a an RF
connector, video-out, video-in and
audio-in.

This makes sense. If you have a look at the
detachable connector, you'll see it's totally PC-like
(MSX cartridge slot on one end, BUT female 50-pin on
the other end).
Now, do you think we could make it work even if
we don't have that Super Expander? ...

Hi everyone,

The following webpage hosts lots of info on
hardware developed by Spectravideo:
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-16418/hardware_index.htm
(be it MSX or not).
I find it important because what we have been
able to learn from Hans Otten scan from the SVI
Xpress Service manual is confirmed in this
webpage:

SVI-609: LAN adapter

(Not that I doubt on your word, Hans)
Maybe, the MSX FAQ should be updated on the
occasion of this little "discovery", if we can
call it so.
There are other devices and descriptions for the
SVI-838: X´PRESS 16 - PC and MSX2 hybride compute.
I would strongly recommend a visit for those
interested.

3rd part: Spectravideo Network Card (SVI-709)

2000-06-04 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi y'all,

I have just realized of one thing and would
like to share it with you all.
The SVI-709 card 50-pin connector is not
such!
I didn't realize before, but it happens it
has the same "hole" cartridges have in order
to fit the MSX computer slot. So I have
carefully tried to remove the 50-pin connector
from the main piece of hardware and I have
easily detached it! The SVI-709 network
interface card is indeed plugged to the
MSX computer slot just a cartridge game!!

What the MSX FAQ says:
SVI-709: Network card (printer sharing
interface!)

I don't understand much that about "printer
sharing interface". I will definitely take
the pictures tomorrow so that they are
publicly available.

As I told before, I thought these interfaces
should work with MSX1 computers so I have
plugged it in an MSX1 computer and here goes
what the screen has displayed.

All this is very exciting. I had only
plugged the cartridge (no network cables).
The "no response from master" message makes
me think maybe there is a Master cartridge
that is in charge of logins (don't think so
as there is no such Master cartridge listed
in the MSX FAQ Hardware. Maybe two network
interfaces have to be connected and only then
one will work as master, the other as slave.

If anybody knows anything else, just anything,
please, let me know!

Suggestions, whatever, is welcome!!!

Hello,

Paying a little bit of closer attention
one can see that MSX printer conecctors
have 14 pins. However, the SVI-709 has
a 50-pin connector. Therefore, it can't
probably be plugged to the interface
connector.
Could anyboyd please cast some light
on this?

I'll try to take a picture of one tomorrow
so that I can upload it tu funet, as the
picture there shows a network but NOT the
real interface.

Spectravideo Network Card (SVI-709)

Does anybody know whether any article

work with first generation computers.

Do these cards need any special software

So sooorry :( Just don't get mad,
will you? :)
Now, yes, you're totally right.
8245 has three different video connectors:
RF, the 8-pin DINned and the SCART.
And yes, the SCART is the one I need.
Do you think you could tell me what pins
should be soldered?
Amstrad monitor has the following
pins:
1 RED
2 GREEN
3 BLUE
4 SYNC
5 GND
6 LUM
I understand I should solder the
SCART's...
15 Red out
11 Green out
7 Blue out
14 GND
Also the respective GND's?
Should 21 Socket GND be soldered too?

So many questions...
I wouldn't ask if I knew...

Thanks!!!

Video connector for MSX2 computers

2000-05-17 Thread Manuel Soler

Hello,

I'm trying to learn how the NMS 8245 (MSX2)
video connector is like (pins and description
of its ping, diagram if possible). Maybe the
video connector pin layout is standard for
every MSX2, I don't know. I think MSX2 computers
use RGB pins. I have checked the msxnet FAQ
to learn there are two diagrams available:
RGB Monitor connector Gradiente Expert
and
RGB connector (Japanese models)
Does anyone know whether the Gradiente Expert
diagram can be taken as a standard for MSX2
computers? (it might only work with Brazilian
MSX computers). Better, does anyone have an
NMS 8245 manual so that I could learn from
it the real pin layout?

Please, I need to know.

Thanks in advance!!

Amstrad monitor for MSX computers

2000-05-07 Thread Manuel Soler

Amstrad monitor for MSX computers
Hello,

I've read that Amstrad color monitors can be
transformed so that they can be used as
MSX color monitors. The cable of an Amstard
monitor has the following pins.

5 1
  6
4 2
  3

1-RED
2-GREEN
3-BLUE
4-SYNCRONISM
5-GROUND
6-LUMINANCE

Amstrad uses a 6-pin plug whereas the MSX
jack uses 8-pins.
Has anobody tried to plug an Amstard monitor
to an MSX computer? If so, how? If not, could
anybody give me a hand on how s/he would do
it?
I was able to "return to life" my old green
monitor thanks to the tips from people in this
list. Now I would like to use, at last, a color
monitor.

Manuel

Sergio Guerrero is a Spanish MSXer who
has coded an MSX CD Player program in
NestorBASIC and modified the NestorCDPlayer
so that it can be used with an IDE interface
(originally it could only be used with
and SCSI interface). He hopes to upload
the two programs to a webpage in short.
However, I do think he will be willing to
email them to anybody else who is interested.

There is a point he has asked me to stress.
Sergio would like to make the cd player
program Novaxis-compatible. Yet, he does not
have the technical information needed in
order to code it (such as how to use SCSI
commands with Novaxis). If anybody
had further info on this he would appreciate
it. FYI, his email address is:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have uploaded the two programs to my
webpage:

members.xoom.com/z80msx/cdnow.lzh
members.xoom.com/z80msx/ncdp_ide.lzh

That's a good point, Nestor. Yet I am just

There is a new Spanish MSX mailinglist

There is also an Italian MSX mailing

Hope that was helpful!

Monitor back into life!!!

2000-03-16 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi there,

My monitor is working again!!
Thanks Manuel and Jeroen for your aid.
I've finally soldered the video cable
to pin #4 (monochrome) and the display
is very fine and smooth.
There were a few lines at the bottom
of the monitor that shouldn't look like
that (darker green if compared with the
rest of the monitor screen) but I have
adjusted the monitor display control
buttons and they've dissapeared "below".
I don't think that damages the monitor,
does it?
Thanks to Erik de Boer too for providing
the conector schematics.

Re: Philips monitor cable (please help!)

Hi,

When you talk about...
> Use the GND pin for the returns of the CVBS and AUDIO signals.
... be ti CVBS or monochrome as it has also
been suggested by Jeroen. You mean soldering
the *two* returns (CVBS/monochrome and AUDIO)
to the GND pin? Or just one? This may sound
a silly question but, as my cassette connector
cable has only one of the two cables (in, out)
soldered in the GND pin, I was wondering.

Thanks to you two for your kind replies,

Philips monitor cable (please help!)

2000-03-14 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi everybody,

It seems the cable than links an MSX
computer (DIN with 8 pins) to a Philips
monitor (green screen, audio and video
jacks) is not on sale in any electronic
store in my city. I have checked the
connector diagram at www.faq.msxnet.org
and have some doubts. I'm not an
electronics "guru".
I understand the diagram shows the rear
view where cables must be soldered.

Monitor connector Philips

pin 7 NC
pin 6 +12V
pin 3 AUDIO
pin 8 NC
pin 1 +5V
pin 5 CVBS (color video PAL)
pin 4 Ys (monochrome)
pin 2 gnd ('luminance')

My guess is I should use these pins:

pin #3 for the audio
pin #4 because it's a green monochrome monitor
pin #2 GND

Now, my doubt is should I use the
+12V pin? Or the +5V pin? Should I use
the GND pin? What should I solder the
GND pin with? What should I solder the
+12V or +5V pin with? Should I use any
other pin?

Please, any help is welcome! I want my
monitor back into life :)

Thanks in advance,

Manuel

Supergood tape2disk program!!!

Hello to you all,

For those of you who may be interested there
is a very good program that transfers the
contents from tapes to disk that can be found

It's title is tape2hdd.exe and it is a PC

configure a couple of switches under difficult
circumstances.
I think this piece of info should be updated

Ref: INJUSTICE

2000-02-05 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi,

Concerning my previous message about the
msx japanese-english dictionary rom, I can
say now Jim Breen has finally agreed to upload it
together with the fmsx Unix emulator to the
Nihongo pub directory at the Monash University
ftp.cc.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/
There is a mirror in Europe at Funet:
ftp.funet.fi/pub/culture/japan/mirror/monash/pub/nihongo
or similar. Anyway, it's an easy directory to
find.
The index.txt file has also been updated including
now (I suggested him so) a reference to www.fax.msxnet.org
as an aid to those who know little about the MSX system.

I N J U S T I C E

2000-01-27 Thread manuel . soler

Hi,

Injustice against the MSX system? Read on.
Seeing that the University Monash (?) in Australia host
a wonderful Japanese learning language directory with
loads of computer programs for very different platforms
(ms-dos, windows, unix, linux, amiga, acorn, apple)
I reached the maintainer and told him about the MSX
homecomputer system and a cartridge consisting of
a Japanese-English dictionary. I thought that would
very interesting to add to the directory so that people
could learn about another computer system (ours)
and the program available. To my surprise the reply
justifying why the MSX rom would not be added he told
me literally "It's such and old package too". Pathetic.
So here I include the reply I have written and emailed
him. I had previously emailed him the rom and two
captures wasn't he able to find an emulator or run
the rom (even though I gave detailed instructions
on how to use it with fmsx-dos).

Anything to say? Follow this thread.

Hello Jim Breen,

Pardon me, but there *is* an MSX emulator for Unix. I have attached
it to this message, for your convenience's sake.

> On thinking about it, I don't think I'll add it to the archive.
> Somethinga s specific as that would be obtained from an MSX
archive.

I see. Well, I can't agree with you. MSX is and old AND alive
computer system. As a matter of fact people all over the world
still use MSX computers (not as widely spread as PC, of course).
Brazil, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Japan host most of their
users, yet not all of them.
The reason why I was talking about an emulator was purely
because I thought it would be much easier for you to check the
program with an emulator than with a real MSX computer.
What MSX users actually do is use the cartridge or run the rom file
on with a launching application program.
And I don't think age should be a key factor when deciding which
software to upload to the directory. As a matter of fact, the directory
currently includes approximaltey same age Amiga Japanese
software which I think can't justify age as an excluding factor, when
quality should should be the issue taken into account.
What's more, if I were someone interested in learning what
computer systems have Japanese-learning software programs
coded for, I would certainly like to know about _all_ of them.

Sincerely,

Manuel

Jailbreak Konami Cartridge??

1999-12-22 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi everybody,

Browsing again an issue 34 from MSX Club
Spanish magazine I have read an article
about Konami and their releases to that
date, realising a title named JAILBREAK
is said to have been released by Konami
under cartridge format.

This has caused me much surprise as I
knew Konami released that game for arcade
machines (MAME supports it nowadays), but
NEVER for the MSX system.

Questions:
1. Can anybody confirm this?
2. Had this game truly been released as
a catridge, could anybody please email me
the rom so that I could update the MSX
Cartridge List?

Thanks for your attention,

Soft-Card software

1999-12-20 Thread Manuel Soler

Hi y'all,

I have been reading the www.faq.msxnet.org
section about the MSX1. There there is a
piece of writing that deals with software
available on soft-card (e.g. Shark Hunter).

I would like to ask any of you if you could
tell me the titles of those programs that
were released as soft-cards, apart from
Shark Hunter, as it is the only one I have
knowledge of.

It happens I am very interested in this
sort of soft. Yet, it was rather unknown
in Spain, AFAIK.

Hola,

hablando con Jose Angel Morentes (supongo que
sabreis quien es el antes que yo) y le comente
la idea de realizar un registro de fotos de los
casetes de MSX con fin a poder tener una
informacion que nos parece interesante. A fin

buen complemento.

Personalmente yo no necesito "coger" esa
tuviera casetes y quisiera, tambien podriamos

a contestarme...

Nos vemos en Barcelona!

Y2K aftermath on the MSX?? (2nd part)

1999-11-28 Thread Manuel Soler

[I ask and then find a reply!]

Hi y'all,

I've just downloaded the MSX2 Technical handbook
(thanks Konamiman!) and read in the DATE section:

---
The format of the date to be set by the DATE command
has three fields: , , and . Each
field is separated by "-", "/", or ".". Each field
can have the following numerical values:

: 1980 to 2079
0 to 79 (considered as 2000 to 2079)
80 to 99 (considered as 1980 to 1999)
:1 to 12
: 1 to 31
---

So that's it! Our MSX computers are already
prepared to deal with the year 2000! :) Or so it
seems. Now, can anybody confirm whether the same
applies to MSX1 computers?

Manuel

PS to Konamiman: hey! there's no way to make your
mem.com program run on my MSX2! I do have msxdos.sys
and command.com (MSX-DOS2) yet it says DOS2 required.

we should not be really worried about?

Playstation and fmsx doubt

Hello guys!

I'm trying to learn HOW can the Playstation port
of the fmsx emulator be used as the zip file

on the steps to follow in order to succeed.
All I've been able to learn is that I have to
convert .rom files to .h with the bintoh.exe
utility.
Can the fmsx emulator for the Playstation be
saved on a cd-rom and played from the real
console? Or do I need to plug some sort of
cable to the console from my PC in order to
play MSX roms in the console? I just have no
clue.

Any piece of advice is welcome!

Brand New MSX Database on-line

1999-02-10 Thread Manuel . Soler
.

I've already emailed the guys in charge at funet, komkon, and Sean telling
them about this database, and asking them to mail me whenever they add a
piece of software to their sites so that the database doesn't get old
and outdated (something we all would hate).

By the time of this writing, the database only stores games. In future
versions, new databases for demos, programming, utils, etc. could be
added. I need feedback from you users to know what your thoughts are
about this point either personally or in a thread in the mailing list.

However a few questions remain to be asked now and which imply your
collaboration in some degree.

1.- I've been working hard to collect the data and sort it
(hell! do _I_ know!) :) but as you can have guessed, not every record
has the data for all of its fields, so I ask you that whenever you
make a search and find that there's some data missing and you know which
that data is, please email me so that I can update the database. What's
more, I have included a fill-out form in the main webpage so as to make
it even easier for you to communicate any news. Rewriting Kennedy: "Ask
not what the MSX database can do for you, ask what you can do for the
MSX database." :)

2.- Do you think it would be a good idea to ask the MSX soft site
mainteiners to modify (only where needed!) the filenames so that we could
set up a bit of order out of this caos and give more coherence to the
many different programs available? I do think that would be great, but
I just can't go ask them, I need to know what YOU think, then if we
reached an agreement we could ask them. And now quoting Armstrong: "That's
one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind". Well, that
_would_ be...

3.- I haven't had the time to visit EVERY MSX site on the web, so if you
have a game and you find it is not registered in the database, please
let me know about it and send me that info, so that I can update it.

Proposals to improve the database in a (near) future are more than
welcomed. Remember that this database belongs to the community and has
been conceived with that purpose. I just will try to keep some order in it.

So that was it. I hope this my share of contribution to the MSX community
is worth the efforts invested in.

Sincerely to you all,

Manuel Soler

Greetings! (and a question)

1999-02-09 Thread Manuel . Soler

Hello MSXers!!

Well, this is my first message to the list so i'll sort of introduce myself
very briefly.

If you're not interested in it go to THE END OF THE MESSAGE.

I was shocked, puzzled, bewildered, AMAZED! when I learnt aout SNES emulators
so then I thought there could be MSX emulators so that I could enjoy and
recall back the days I was using my Philips VG-8020 MSX1 home computer,
and bingo! there it was! I just cannot put it into words all the emotions
and feelings I experienced when finally, and after getting the damm :)
ROMs which were not included and which I had to find in the net, I could
run The Goonies cartridge on my pc. This was about three weekends ago, and
i'm really hooked now. I love my MSX no matter the many enhacements the
PC world brought. I suppose some (many) of you experienced the same.

So that's it. As you can see I also learnt about the msx mailing list
to which I promptly subscribed, and you fellow MSXers! :))

i'm 22 and i'm recalling when i was ten and playing with my friends to the
different MSX games. This all is just SOOO INCREDIBLE!! I just cannot stop
raving about it!! :)

Well, THIS IS THE END OF THE MESSAGE:

I've been looking for the "Deus Ex Machina" MSX game, I believe it IS a
tape-game in all major sites like funet, komkon, jazz but haven't been
able to find it, so if any of you knows of a place where it can be downloaded
I would be very much thankful.

Well then, many thanks for reading this autointroduction and greetings to
all of you from Valencia (East Coast) SPAIN.

Re: games and many questions...

hello jedi,

I'll try to answer to the questions I have a reply for. hope that helps.

sorry, this is a question, when you mean binaries, what kind of format are
you referring to? .bin .bas ? and how can you transform then into .rom??
Is there any program out there? which? where? :)

>Someone knows where I can find the game based in the movie "The Name of the
>Rose"?? And the newest MSX games? I only find in the WWW old ones, in sites
>like Komkon.
>Those games that people talk in the mailing list, like Onyx and "Deus...etc

>them?

The MSX game based of the BOOK written by Umberto Eco and on which a movie
was based on,
There is the book written by Umberto Eco and then a movie based on it came
out called,as you say, "The Name of the Rose", and then came out too the
MSX game by a Spanish company called Opera or Topo (i'm not positive but
I can check it out if you want to). The game was released as a tape and
belongs to the 3D category, so now you know how it will look like on the
screen.
I never heard about Onyx, the other title is "Deus ex Machina" and it was
designed for MSX1 not turbo R!

And please, don't attach an HTML copy of the SAME message, reduce bandwith! :)

MSX database (the snag is...)

1999-02-09 Thread Manuel . Soler

Hello,

This message is going to be brief and concise.
I have already an MSX roms database and a bloke of mine has designed an
AWK script that deals with the database.
The snag about it is that it seems more and more clear to me that the
webmaster is NOT going to let me host the cgi and the database in his server,
so I am asking: is there anybody here who, on the benefit of the MSX
community would be willing to help and let me host this stuff into his
server?
I am not a hacker nor is my intention to cause problems. I just want a place
to store the stuff. I'm currently looking for free web pages, but haven't
found any that lets me store cgi's :(

If you think you can, contact me and we can talk about it. I have even already
written the Release Message i'll send to this list when everything is up
and running. A few of you may already know about this database.
It has the following fields:
rom
system
type
title
size
company
year

and version 2.0 stores 1,100 records!!!

but I won't tell more till the hosting problem is solved. Don't want to
create false expectatives.

Sincerely,

Manuel Soler

any cd-rom collection?

1999-02-09 Thread Manuel . Soler

Hello,

I would like to know whether there are any cd-rom collections of MSX stuff
like games MAINLY, and other utils. I've been searching in the Net and
have found several collections for Spectrum ZX, Amstrad etc but not for my
favourite homecomputer.

Preferably made in Spain (to avoid expensive post costs), but open to any
other countries.

Sincerely,

Manuel Soler

did you know about fmsx 2.0 ??

1999-02-09 Thread Manuel . Soler

Hello,

I just wanted to say:

fMSX 2.0 is coming!

   Major code update
   Standard Z80 emulation
   Line-by-line screen refresh
   Fixed interrupts
   Kanji support

from Marat's page, for all those who hadn't payed a visit lately.

I find the kanji support an exciting feature!

Manuel.
