[MSX] New Mega Flash ROM available

2003-02-10 Thread Manuel Pazos
NEW MEGA FLASH ROM NOW FOR SALE

Manuel Pazos and Armando Perez (Ramones) have their new Mega Flash for sale
now.

1.- PRODUCT DESCRIPTION.

If you don't know this product, maybe you should know it: Mega Flash ROM
is a cartridge which works with any MSX model and comes with a Flash ROM
memory and with a set of characteristics that make it ideal for storing
the real images of any ROM cartridge (.ROM files) which are available
through
Internet or inside several compilations distributed as CD.

Its capacity makes that storing a ROM in the Mega Flash ROM and executing it
will be the same as using the original cart. It is not an emulation. The
characteristics of the Mega Flash ROM are similar to the ones of the
original
cart, in a 80% of times. For the remaining 20%, our loading program works as
patcher and adapts automatically the ROM to the characteristics of the
Mega
Flash ROM, being transparent to the user in this way .

The Mega Flash ROM cart comes with a modern Flash ROM chip which makes its
data everlasting after being stored. This means that it doesn't work as a
traditional memory which loses its contents when it is disconnected from the
supply.

Then it lets to carry data as if it were a floppy disk and keep the same ROM
stored so much time as we desire without having to load it every time.

Similar characteristics products exist or have existed in the market, as the
italian SCC RAM or the LPE Flash G by Leonardo Padial, being only this last
product the one which is closer to the characteristics of the Mega Flash
ROM,
because of using the same kind of memory chip.

2.- PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS.

Mega Flash ROM doesn't make use of any JUMPER / SWITCH for its different
configurations as other similar products.

Everything is handled via soft and transparent for the user.

Mega Flash ROM only comes with a switch (push-button) for avoiding the ROM
execution when the MSX is turned on (or after a reset). If this switch was
not
available it'd made impossible to load any new program without inserting the
cart while the computer is on.

Mega Flash ROM comes with its cart-box and with a label. Then, it is not
only
a printed circuit board. In this way the circuit is protected of damages.
In short, it is like a traditional cartridge.

3.- DIFFERENT VERSIONS.

It is possible to get different Mega Flash ROM versions :

[] BASIC MODEL :

Equipped with 512 Ks of Memory, with ASCII8/16 mapping.

[] SRAM MODEL :

Equipped with 512 Ks of Memory, ASCII8/16 mapping and 2K or 8 Ks of SRAM
memory.

SRAM memory doesn't disappear after taking the supply out. It normally comes
with a small battery button with a big autonomy.

The SRAM is ready for saving saved games of the games which are ready for
it,
without needing of use a floppy or a hard disk. It makes the operation more
transportable.
Then, if we play a game and save the state in SRAM, we can carry the Mega
Flash ROM SRAM to other computer and continue the saved game from where we
were before.

It is also possible to store the SRAM contents to disk and vice versa.

[] SCC MODEL.

Equipped with 512 Ks of Memory, with Konami SCC mapping.

This kind of Mega Flash ROM is built from a Konami SCC cartridge.
It lets us not to use other slot for enjoying the SCC sound when a Konami
game
is played with those characteristics.

[] EXTENDED BASIC MODEL :

Equipped with 1024 Ks of Memory, with ASCII8/16 mapping.

This is an experimental model being developed. It is similar to the basic
model
but comes with more storage capacity. This lets us to use the main Flash
memory
as SRAM. Then, saved states can be stored in that Flash, without needing of
SRAM. Furthermore, it lets to make game compilations, that prepared with a
selector program, would let us to have more than a megarom game in the same
flash and then be able to change the game using the selector after the
boot of the computer.

4.- LOADING PROGRAM CHARACTERISTICS (OPF.COM)

OPF.COM is the program which loads the files and store them in the Mega
Flash
ROM. The program is fully compatible with any MSX model with at least disk
drive unit. This is a program for MSXDOS, being compatible DOS2 too.

Then, let's to revise the characteristics :

[] Compatibility with all MSX models.

[] Full compatibility with MSX-DOS2, letting to load programs from any
storage device (HD, CD-Rom, ZIP, )

[] Compatibility with MSX Turbo R, and use of the R800 speed.

[] High speed of loading and erasing of programs. Using the special
characteristics of the Am29F040B chip, OPF makes the erasing and writing
verification faster than any of the actual programs.

[] Transparent to the user. It is maybe one of the best characteristics of
OPF combined with Mega Flash ROM. We can divide them in 2 parts :

* No need of jumpers : OPF detects automatically the ROM which is being
tried to load. If the ROM needs a 8 Ks mapping, OPF prepares the cart
for that. Similar characteristics for a ROM with 16 Ks mapping

Re: game I didn't know (La abadia del crimen)

Hmm, too bad the controls are a bit irritating and hard to get used to.
Because of the bad controls I got lost of my 'servant' and I keep
missing the vespers or other things I have to do in this wicked abbey...
;-)

Really? I find the controls very easy to use ;)
I think it is the best control system for this kind of game, because
the point of view changes in every screen. So, in order to keep a straight
way, you only have to press UP, and you don't need to care about the point
of view. Right key always turn to your(William's) right, and left always
turn to your left.
Anyway, I friend of mine complained about the same that you some years
ago

ALso: do you have to go through all this text in the beginning?

Do you mean the abbot speech?

Is there also an English manual?

Just a text explaining how to LOAD/SAVE. Do you think it is necesary to
explain the controls/keys? I can add that info to the text too. :)

2001-12-22 Thread Manuel Pazos

Hi!

I've been tinking about this old msx1 game for a few days now, But I'm
unable to recal the name of the darn thing :-(
It plays like Time Pilot from Konami, only it had some great classical
 music (especially during the intro).
If I recal correctly you started during WW1, then moved on to WW2 then
the korean war (helicopters) then jets and then ufo types of planes
In between the stages it had a short animation, like the plane landing,
the pilot getting out and run behind a cactus to tinkle and then take
 of again.

Also it took ages to load from the tape.
Anybody knows the name? (and where to get the game for download ??)

I think you are talking about Time Pilot

Actually, Sonyc seems to use graphics from the Mastersystem and Game Gear
Sonic games.

For that reason it was named Sonyc instead of Sonic.
Also, the graphics are (afaik) all originals.

All graphics were handmade by Elvis Gallegos. Only the main character
(Sonic) was ripped and modified.

You can extract that ROM images using CUT005. You'll find it in my

Hi!

Nop. I am afraid not. The ones on my site are the ones you can rip with
that
program, THe other disk (I think nr 4.), simply won't work (wrong disk it
says) and the other files I mentioned, simply don't work after they are
ripped. This is for the normal SCC versions, like Nemesis 1.

(?!) I have no problem ripping those games from Konami Game Collection 4
(Special, or whatever). I patched all disks with KOGCPAT, then I extracted
and used the ROMs without problem with my ESE SCC.
Anyway, you are right about SCC versions. The problem is not GAMECUT
program, but the SCC patch used (I think the SCC patch was designed for
being used in the disk version and not in ROM format)

Manuel, how can I use these ROM images on a real MSX, did you write a

You can use that ROMs in several ways, for example:

- with an SCC+ (expanded to 128Kb) and SCCLOAD
- with an ESE SCC and SCCLOAD/MGLOAD
- with a turbo R and TRLOAD
- with a turbo R and MEGAMU
- with Trunk's LOADROM

Probably there are more ways of doing it.

You are right. I were talking by heart. I didn't remember what was the

Sega and Sonyc

Yes , but is an interesting question.

Maybe, but I don't think so. I were in Den-yu Land last year and met
Teruo Yabumoto from Sega. When he saw a Sonic clone running on an MSX, he

We were talking a while and he said that there was not problem about
copyright or licence. Sega don't care about 'small proyects'

But Yokoi from Front Line and Tsujikawa told me that ASCII could
distribute Sonyc, but I must change name and main character, because then it
wouldn't be a 'small proyect'

1999-07-20 Thread Manuel Pazos

Maybe then I can finally play Illusion City! To play Illusion City, is
MIDI
nessacary? And is the PCM device nessacary??? What other points of
incompatibility could it have???

The MIDI is not necessary. The PCM is. BUT this can be easy copied.
I'm trying to convince Ademir Carchano to made one for my CIEL 2+ Turbo.

As far as I know PCM is not used in Illusion City.

RE: What is EVA?

1999-07-07 Thread Manuel Pazos

Hi,

Manuel, Okei know how is the organization of EVA file? (how is the file
structure)
Can you ask her about that? In Brazil many peoples (and me too) want to
know that.

No problem, I can explain EVA format (I examined it some time ago).

1- EVA files 10fps:

- Each frame takes 30 sectors (15Kb)
- First 128x106 bytes are YJK data
- Rest of bytes are PCM data
- Last two bytes indicates PCM size (they should be 1575 =15.75k/10fps)

2- EVA files 12 fps (this one uses a 'dirty' system):

- Each frame takes 30 sectors too
- Data is stored in this way:
[{PCM(1byte)+PIC(11bytes)}*11+PCM(1)+PIC(7)]*106 lines
- Rest of bytes are PCM data
- Last two bytes indicate the same (they should be 1312 or 1313=15.75/12fps)

I hope you to find this info useful.

Bye,

Manuel

RE: What is EVA?

1999-07-05 Thread Manuel Pazos

Has size of 128x106 pixels and 19268 colors (yes! SCREEN 12), digital
audio (synchronized with video animation, obvious) and no compression
(I believe but I can't hack any EVA file yet). These videos can be

EVA files are not compressed.

The speed is about 12 fps (thanks to 712Kbit/s transfer rate in R800
mode) but can ber configured to 10fps and you can use a external PCM
(this option I don't know but I think that is related to the PCM
REC/PLAY cartridges sold in Japan before 1990).

External PCM indicates that the sound is taken from the 'jack' in the
back part of turbo R.
Internal PCM uses built-in microphone of turbo R.

After the PATCH made from M.Pazos and Okey the limit of a ESE file was
about 32Mb (I've a 24Mb EVA!) and now you can create video clips with
at least 200Mb. Each second consumes 512bytes per second.

Each second takes 150Kb (in 10 frames mode). So each frame takes up 30
sectors.

Any thing about EVA? Ah! You can't play direcctly from CD-ROM because
it must a 512 butes sector (and CD-ROM has 2048 bytes sectors...).

Well, that is not the reason. The reason is that CD drive 'is not fast
enough' using the same read system that in HDD. EVA player read byte by
byte with a SCSI command, and CDs are not fast enough in that way.

Anyway, you can play EVAs from CD with a modified EVA player made by
Trunks (sorry, I don't remember the URL). But don't expect too much, it just
show frame by frame (with sound) but not in the right time. It is slow.
Furthermore, with this program you can see EVA on a turbo R without
MegaSCSI, because it uses MSXDOS2 file handle system.

  End of History...

Ok... more news; Okei is trying to modify EVA program to digitize more
than 32MB on MSX.

Manuel

1999-06-30 Thread Manuel Pazos

Hi,

  Manoel,

My name is Manuel :)

Because it seems to work right.

Then this is a final version, now only upgrades and new features, not?

Maybe, but don't expect too much.

/P is used to select a partition on HDD

  What that maximum martition size?

About 2 Gb.

/Bxxx is used to select the start block (boot sector)

Then I can boot with a FAT16 partition? You, Okey or another freak has
a partition format utility to enable it?

I don't wanted to mean that. Start block is used to indicate the
bootsector of the disk.
There is not any format utility for FAT16 (I think)

Good! But How I can create (store, write) my very very large EVA
files? I can write in partitions or the FAT16 still "read-only"?
You can READ/WRITE files with FAT16.

The I'm idiot using ZIPs with 4 sub-partitions... Hmmm...
  I hate me!! :)

Don't think so. FAT16 takes a lot of time when calculating free disk
space. So it is boring using all the time FAT16. It is nice to use it for
interchange information with a PC, or for big EVAs :)

Really? I can write my files and stupid programs in large 32Mb
partitions? I'm a happy fudeba! And you're fudeba too! :)

Yes, you can work with partitions bigger than 32Mb. But beware with
programs that modify FAT (CHKDSK /F) or so!!
Furthermore, some programs like Multi Mente don't work right with FAT16,
because it don't use 'compatible' commands or rutines.

Because it seems to work right.

Another thing. Who is the 'english' (spanish, portuguese, freench or
latin) version of FAT16.DOC?? I know how to use the program but I
don't know what is this new switches "/P" (partition?) and "/B".

It is in japanese. Former version included a Spanish DOC.

/P is used to select a partition on HDD
/Bxxx is used to select the start block (boot sector)

There you will find a new version of EVA player for FAT16 that can
play EVAs bigger than 32Mb. A 200Mb EVA file was tested on MO and
 worked right.

Good! But How I can create (store, write) my very very large EVA

You can READ/WRITE files with FAT16.
To make big EVA files you can digitize them with MSX and fix them with a
PC

Hi,

Somebody in Japan is working on a FAT16 driver for Megascsi. You can
download
it from the following URL:

http:/www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~okei

Though, you should be aware of the fact that the driver is still in a beta
phase and might contain bugs which can lead to dataloss.

You are right. As I said some months ago, Okei and me were working on a
patch for MSX-DOS2 for working with FAT16 in MegaSCSI. The latest version of
FAT16 was made only by Okei, due to my lack of time. But, as usual, SHE made
a great work (she is one os the best coders that I know).

FAT16 supports HDD, ZIP and MO as far as now.
She made a patch for EVA player which can play EVA files bigger that
32Mb.

You can download both utils from my homepage too. (I must upload it,
because it is only updated in my HDD, sorry)

Does anybody have detailed information about the partitioning scheme
used by
the MK interface? And by the megascsi? I do not intend to re-install my
entire harddisk when switching from MK to megascsi. I just want to write
a
small program that reads the MK partition table and rewrites it to the
 harddisk in megascsi format.

Ooops! I heard "partitioning"? Konami Man goes to rescue you! 8-)

MegaSCSI partitionning system is based in a file with information for
each
partition (begin, end sector, and number of sectors) codified with an own
format and placed in each partition. But actually MegaSCSI formatter also
puts standard partitionning information (same as PC) in the sector 0 and
in
the first sector of each partition, so MegaSCSI disks can be read in PC
without problems (I said this some months ago, now I remember). Want this
 information?

You also can put the 'pointer' of MegaSCSI to select a partition in a very
easy way. So it is supposed that you can access any partition of any disk
(if it is MSX-DOS compatible :)
