I hate to see such works listed as being composed by the dead composer who had no choice in the matter. I disagree here: If someone wrote the music, they wrote the music even if someone else later put some words to it, or put *different* words to it. Yes, Rach wrote the original tune and harmonies, in the context of a larger work. He did not compose the song, just some elements of his work were copied into the derived work. The proposed based on attribute seems entirely appropriate to describe this. It is more of a parody or tribute relationship, not one that he engaged in. Regarding who gets composer credit for the new work, I'd suggest that we follow praxis for every case. I believe it's more common that only the composer of the new work is credited, but there are exceptions, like the well known Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod. /symphonick ___ MusicBrainz-style mailing list MusicBrainz-style@lists.musicbrainz.org http://lists.musicbrainz.org/mailman/listinfo/musicbrainz-style

For Musical Theatre you could use Les Misérables, based on the novel by Victor Hugo (of which a spoken word version – in english – is in the DB) or Oliver! (of which an audiobook version – in german – is also already in MB). For Opera one could also think of Wozzeck or Lulu On Thu, Feb 21, 2013 at 7:42 PM, symphonick symphon...@gmail.com wrote: 2013/2/21 caller#6 meatbyproduct-musicbra...@yahoo.com The All Delighted People example is maybe a grey area?
