[MLO] Re: Inbox

2014-03-21 Thread Dwight Arthur
One way of doing this is documented
at http://stroyan.net/lisasblog/2012/mylifeorganized/ in the section on
daily maintenance. There are lots of other ways of handling it, most of
them very tightly related to the way each user manages his or her queue of
things to do.

Re: [MLO] Re: Inbox

2014-03-25 Thread Lisa Stroyan
I'm glad it was helpful! Here's another trick. On Windows, or If you have a
mobile device that supports creating your own views, you can define your
own version of the inbox view that excludes tasks that have attributes that
indicate those tasks have been processed . this view becomes " new tasks
that are urgent to decide about" . Kind of like a pile of bills separated
out from the paper inbox because the paper inbox has gotten too big . :-)

For example, you can have a view that shows any task that is in the inbox
that does not have a context, or any task that does not have a star. Then,
you can add all of your tasks to the inbox and once you add the
context/star or whatever attribute you choose to indicate that you don't
need to see it in that new view anymore, and the task will disappear from
that view . You will still want to clean out the regular inbox on a regular
basis, but this can eliminate the clutter from your daily view of it.

I've also sometimes used the opposite approach, which is to force the inbox
tasks into my daily view so that I have to move the tasks to elsewhere in
the tree . But when life gets crazy this sometimes gets overwhelming enough
to reduce my use of MLO, which is not a good thing. Right now all of my
house remodel tasks are in the inbox, but I'm working out of my active
Starred view.

I guess the tricky balance is to find a way that keeps us using the program
and yet also supports good long-term habits. I've come to think of evolving
our systems as a good thing, because even if it doesn't improve the system
all that much, at least for me it energizes my thinking .

This was a good idea Lisa. Only problem is it looks as though custom views
do not sync to my tablet. Looks great on the computer. Windows.

Perhaps views do sync I just don't see the way.

Maybe I can change the properties of a folder. I'll check that out when i
get home.

[MLO] Re: Inbox view tweak

2021-11-18 Thread Stéph
Hello Brian,
You could start by selecting the default "Inbox" View, so you won't need an
advanced filter for FolderName. In the list of filters, in the "Contexts"
group, you'll find (none) as an option at the top of the list of Contexts.
Just select that and you'll have a view of the contents of the Inbox
showing only those items with no Context assigned.

With MLO filters, there are usually several ways to achieve what you want.
So, another option if you don't want to start with the default "Inbox" view
(and I suspect you didn't manage to start with that view when you set up
your filter), you could start with the default, unfiltered hierarchy view,
set up an advanced filter on "TopLevelFolderName" contains 'Inbox', then
configure the "show hierarchy" to *include *child items but *not include
*parent
items.

Hope one of those options suits you.

Following up on this, it seems that with the custom view based on what you
recommended for option 2 (which is what I need), I can't add tasks directly
to inbox. It adds it to same level as inbox instead of underneath it. Is
there a way to have it point the entry point to inside of inbox for the
custom view?

2021-11-19 Thread Brian Melendez
When I do this second option you gave, it is not adding the task to the
inbox folder, it is adding it side by side with the inbox folder. I need
to use option 2 you gave because I need it to filter items that already
have a context. On desktop version, I can't save filter changes to the
default inbox view.

[MLO] Re: Inbox view tweak

2021-11-21 Thread Stéph
Ah, you've found a problem with the second option. For the most robust
solution, I'd suggest switching to the first option - a filter developed
from the default Inbox filter.

Alternatively, if you develop the habit of always using the Rapid Task
Entry dialogue to enter new tasks (Ctrl+Shift+M is the default Windows
hotkey for bringing up that dialogue, whether you're in MLO or working in
another application), then it will put them in the Inbox by default.

[MLO] Re: inbox is very puzzling.

2014-11-08 Thread Jay
John (Cesta),

Do you mean your active/open actions when you say Inbox? In MLO, the inbox
is just a folder of tasks. You move a task out and it stays there until you
manually move them back in.

In case you are synchronising between devices, there is a special folder
called in which the tasks you add are stored initially, until you
manually move them out to different projects or folders. I usually do not
keep anything in my inbox for more than a day at the most.

Perhaps a screenshot of your setup would help us understand your problem
better.

Thanks and regards,
Jay

Generally, I only put things in the inbox if I am trying to be fast and
will resolve the actual placement later (typically after syncing to my
computer). Otherwise, I navigate to my folder structure and insert.

[MLO] Re: inbox is very puzzling.

2014-11-08 Thread John Cesta

I think I get the inbox thing. I create tasks on my tablet and phone and
they end up in the inbox (like any gtd app I used in the past) Then i need
to actually move it to another folder. My original problem was I didn't
have another folder OUTSIDE of the inbox now I do as in figure MLO 1A

Now however there are some projects in my inbox I can't seem to get rid of.
If I delete them from the inbox they delete from the projects area. It's as
if they are LINKED to the inbox. see the images MLO1 and MLO2

Thanks

[MLO] Re: inbox is very puzzling.

2014-11-08 Thread John Cesta
Elizabeth,

Yes thanks. Makes sense. I've done this with my other GTD apps but the way
I could MOVE stuff was to select a folder to MOVE it to. I see I can do
this with my PC but there's no MOVE TO on my android devices. I have to cut
the task and paste it where I want it. I think I will have to create some
BEST PRACTICES like waiting till I am on my PC to actually organize stuff.

[MLO] Re: inbox is very puzzling.

2014-11-08 Thread Jay
John,

Anything you delete from MLO is gone from all views. The "project area" you
refer to is actually a view of all your tasks and folders marked as
projects. Views are a powerful part of MLO to visualise your tasks and
projects.
I would suggest you take a look at the demo template in MLO which will help
you understand the task organisation better. In MLO, click on File -> New
and select the "MyLifeOrganized - Demo File" from the drop-down (see
screenshot).

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Jay

[MLO] Re: inbox is very puzzling.

2014-11-08 Thread John Cesta
Jay,

Yea, ya know if you look at it long enough you begin to realize this. I
guess it took my second go round to see it clearly.

I loaded up the GTD template and it makes a l lot of sense to me. Thanks,

John

[MLO] Re: inbox and other views constantly show completed tasks

2024-01-30 Thread Alyona (MLO Support)
You can save your customized view as a new one (here
you

can find the instructions).

Regarding the Inbox view, if you frequently use it, you may find it
convenient to open it in a separate tab and set this view as the default
for that tab. Right-click on the tab name and select "Set as default for
this tab."

Actually, the items get copied, but the originals remain if doing cut paste.
