Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-08-09 Thread Laurence Glazier
Thanks all for the advice which encouraged me to try again.

I followed suggestions above, and combined outlines into one, and the sync
process is working and I am enjoying using the app. However I have not yet
tested sync much on outlines with nested todo lists and dependent tasks,
where the checkbox status used not to sync reliably for me.

I emailed the developer to query the ten outline limit in cloud storage
some weeks ago - I did not get a reply yet. Perhaps he is busy and maybe
there are issues in the design which I am unaware of which require this
limitation.

I have found a product - not as good - which saves to dropbox, so when my
cloud sync subscription runs out year after next I will review things
again, but for now I stay with MLO and hope for removal of the limit, and a
common file structure between platforms.

Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-06-17 Thread Andrei
Hello Laurence,
I also had some sync problems with my Huawei U8650 android-phone.
The phone is not very performant and it was working very slow (I installed
a lot of application+ my MLO tree had about 2000tasks).
I even decided to not use MLO android because of the low speed + from time
to time i could see "Lost and found" folders inside on my MLO profile.

3 weeks ago i bought a new phone. It is not a powerful phone, but MLO runs
quickly on it. The cloud sync runs ok, without problems.

Also, in the past i had many problems with different applications due to a
bad quality SD Card. When i replace it, all problems dissapeared.
If you have a possibility, test MLO application and sync on another phone.

Good luck !

Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-06-16 Thread Laurence Glazier
Technically, all the outlines one ever uses can be contained within one.
This is the philosophy of the workflowy.com web service, and the
LifeBalance application from PalmPilot days also enforced this. This means,
in theory, the limit to ten files is not really a limit.

However, some (including me) like the freedom to set up individual,
discrete outline files containing as much or as little as we like.

In the case of MLO, I have experienced synchronization error issues which
were not fixed, and these errors occur more often in larger and more
complex outlines, so until I have more confidence in MLO synchronization
reliability, I like to reduce my risk by using more, but smaller, outlines.

I confirmed that when I attempt to create an cloud file within a single
subscription, I receive a message "A limit of files to be owned by this user
has been reached" and I also confirmed that in the process of signing up
with the cloud service and buying a subscription there is no warning or
acknowledgement that there is a limit of ten files. I believe that there
must be a limit and I think that 10 is as reasonable as any other limit, but
I do agree with Laurence that this limit should be acknowledged in the
purchase process before the transaction is final.

Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-06-14 Thread Laurence Glazier
Actually it turned out that my models were too complex for MLO.
Synchronization errors occurred regularly and the problem I was having was
not fixed, over some years. In those days I was on Windows PC, so I
switched to ListPro whose architecture is based on a portable file
structure, which enabled me to run off a single file (I attached the Pocket
PC as a remote disk to my PC, and opened the file directly in the Windows
application).

When I moved to Android, I had to say goodbye to ListPro, for which Illium
did not make an Android version, and so moved back to MLO. But because of
the synchronisation issues, I spread and minimise my risk by having several
smaller models (which seem less prone to synchronise incorrectly). Because
of having more models in use, I have run up against this limit of ten files
which can be held in the cloud per account. If I combine my models into
fewer, nested outlines, I fear they are more likely to synchronise wrongly.
However I will try that, but how easily one can spend more time tweaking
the system than doing the tasks it stores. And it will increase
synchronisation time,

And I do think it is right that the limit of ten files should be made clear
at the point of purchase - I must have missed it somewhere, and would have
thought twice, though I think I would still have bought the storage.

Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-06-07 Thread Maximilian Hantsch-Köller
Regarding your point 3, it is not necessary to limit yourself to only using
MLO at one computer at a time, and always closing it. You need, however, a
slightly different setup.

For some years I had been using a system where I set up MLO on both my home
and two office PCs, synching all of them through Dropbox. Each MLO instance
had its own local MLO file, and I synched that local MLO file to the
(local) Dropbox file using MLO's file sync mechanism. The important step
here is that I did NOT open the Dropbox file directly in MLO, but instead
each MLO was running from it's own local file which got locally synced to
the Dropbox file.

Using this setup, the Dropbox file only gets changed whenever MLO syncs to
it. That copy is then put onto Dropbox and copied to all other local copies
of the Dropbox. Whenever you move to another PC, then just sync that local
file to the Dropbox file again (Hit F9, or wait for automatic sync in MLO
4) and your local copy which you are working on is up to date. Because you
never save the central Dropbox file directly, but only sync to it, this
relieves you from the limit of only running 1 copy of MLO at a time.

So, should you forget to sync, or work on computers at different times
concurrently, the modifications to the MLO file will be synched (using
MLO's synchronisation mechanism) and not just copied (Dropbox just copies
files around). The only thing I had to remember with MLO 3 was to hit F9
ever so often to start the sync. I have not used the method with MLO 4, but
I suppose the automatic time-based sync would take care of it automatically
even.

Disadvantage of this setup was that I could not sync mobile MLO. So that is
why about 2 years ago I switched to using MLO Cloud, it works both with
Blackberry and Android mobile versions. And I have been happy ever since; I
don't mind the few dollars it costs per month.

Re: [MLO] Cloud sync limited to maximum of ten files

2013-06-04 Thread Dwight
My current understanding might be different from the last time we discussed
this. I believe that dropbox is a good idea if:
1. Dropbox is supported on every platform where you run MLO
2. MLO uses a single interchangeable file format across every platform where
you run MLO.
3. You only use MLO on one device at a time, and you close it before going to a
different device.
4. You never use MLO disconnected, i. e. without Internet access.

Apparently there are many people who use MLO on multiple Windows machines
(including various tools for simulated Windows on Apple) where this might be
not only feasible but also valuable, such as a person who has MLO installed on
Windows machines at home and at work.

If mobile platforms were to use the same file format it would be possible to
extend these benefits there as well. However, in my opinion the would be a
high risk of users violating the third precondition (one device at a time) and
getting into trouble unless some sort of interlock prevented all new logins
while any login remains open.

Sounds like from the complexity of what you're doing, dropbox would not
give you the granularity you need anyway.
