Re: Oracle, Sun and MySQL
What I am more concerned about at the moment is how much the uncertainty over the deal is hurting MySQL? I was recently in a project planning meeting where MySQL was dismissed completely because nobody could give guarantees about where MySQL was going. There were a lot of concerns over where future development would go and a fear that when the deal goes through Oracle may slowly raise support and training costs to the sort of levels applicable to Oracle database products. These kind of arguments seem impossible to counter for as long as the uncertainty continues and I for one wish they would just resolve the situation either way very quickly because its hurting my business and open source software! regards John On Tue, 2009-11-10 at 23:50 -0600, Peter Brawley wrote: European regulators agree with Monty that the Oracle-Sun deal threatens database competition. Re: storage difference in VARCHAR(size)?
You have stumbled across the secret. No, there is no difference at all as the calculations suggested here confirm. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/storage-requirements.html Note: as you can see in the above, CHAR data DOES take up room for it's full size, stupidly enough. If I declare the column as a VARCHAR (this is an InnoDB table), does it matter what size I declare it as if it's between 1 and 255? I know there's an extra byte of storage once it goes above 255 because of the length, but is there a storage difference between VARCHAR(100) and VARCHAR(255)? Obviously there's a functional difference in what gets cut off when I try to store into that table, but is that the only difference? I believe MySQL will still have great influence in Open Source area. The better is that MySQL will be a separate Company which has no relation to Sun and Oracle. Maybe Oracle can sell MySQL to a 3rd company. 2009/11/11 John Daisley john.dais...@butterflysystems.co.uk What I am more concerned about at the moment is how much the uncertainty over the deal is hurting MySQL? MySQL University session on November 12: Gearman for MySQL
Gearman for MySQL http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Gearman_for_MySQL This Thursday (November 12th, 14:00 UTC), Giuseppe Maxia of the MySQL Community Team will present Gearman for MySQL. Gearman is a client/server infrastructure for generic tasks, usable on distributed servers, with little worry about the details. No matter what language you speak, Gearman can meet your needs in C, PHP, Perl, Ruby, shell scripting, and several more. Gearman can also work in conjunction with MySQL, either using UDFs, or simply through its basic architecture. Giuseppe's talk will show examples of how to use Gearman for remote installation and how to call a complicate data warehousing function written in Perl from any other language, with no knowledge of Perl at all. For MySQL University sessions, point your browser to this page: http://webmeeting.dimdim.com/portal/JoinForm.action?confKey=mysqluniversity You need a browser with a working Flash plugin. You may register for a Dimdim account, but you don't have to. (Dimdim is the conferencing system we're using for MySQL University sessions. It provides integrated voice streaming, chat, whiteboard, session recording, and more.) MySQL University is a free educational online program for engineers/developers. MySQL University sessions are open to anyone, not just Sun employees. Sessions are recorded (slides and audio), so if you can't attend the live session you can look at the recording anytime after the session. Here's the schedule for the upcoming weeks: * November 19: memcached Functions for MySQL (UDFs) (Patrick Galbraith) * November 26: The Spider Storage Engine (Giuseppe Maxia) * December 3: Practical Full-Text Search in MySQL (Bill Karwin) The schedule is not engraved in stone at this point. Please visit http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_University#Upcoming_Sessions for the up-to-date list. On that page, you can also find the starting time for many time zones. Re: storage difference in VARCHAR(size)?
Your mail suggests that you *are* seeing a difference, though. What are you seeing? What I was saying, is that VARCHAR takes up space l (= length) of the data plus 1 or 2 bytes to store the length, while CHAR takes up the full space of the -defined- column size. This is rather wasteful when storing CHAR data that doesn't take up the full available space (as this is padded with spaces up to the defined length) and is a storage engine feature ;-) With regards, Martijn Tonies Upscene Productions http://www.upscene.com Download Database Workbench for Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase SQL Anywhere, MySQL, InterBase, NexusDB and Firebird! query cache extension
Hi, I'm thinking of extending the query cache to deal with following scenarios, 1. stop invalidating the cache entries when updates take place for columns which are not in the select list of the cached queries 2. when a second query contains a subset of columns from a first query (which has cached results) obtain the results from the cache, this will not happen due to the difference in the query, but since the select list of the second query is a subset of the select list of the first query (and the where clause should be identical) we can obtain the results from the cache. 3. identify the queries with identical select lists but having column names in different orders and process them as identical queries and take the advantage of query cache. Still this is in idea level and I haven't done any coding yet. I just wanted to try out this as an experiment and check the performance on a database where the updates are relatively less. I know that this needs some more memory for the query cache, and need some additional query parsing. Since I'm a beginner in this area I would like to know whether this is doable and any problems that may arise Thanks, Amila -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/mysql?unsub=arch...@jab.org
