RE: Spam

2002-01-11 Thread Robert Lucier

A little higher barrier to entry, even for non-spam posts might not be
a bad thing. The list is already pretty well spammed with questions
that are either in the manual, or result from a lack of programming
experience in general.

Making it harder to post might make it a little easier to stay
subscribed

RE: Spam

2002-01-11 Thread Robert Lucier

I wasn't trying to say that the simple questions are spam, only that if
it took a little more effort to post, some people might check with the
manual and archives first. Posting to the list would always still be an
option if those failed.

Maybe the lists could be divided into: 1. mysql compilation and
installation, 2. other mysql specific questions (table sizes,
corruption recovery, database-level permissions, different table
types), 3. writing applications w/mysql (like integrating w/other apps,
php, odbc, and general questions about writing database apps, and
writing particular sql statements).

But it's not terrible as it is now. I would simply argue that making it
slightly more difficult to post is *not* going to kill off the list.

spam. the list SHOULD aid and embrace novice users. i know heikki and
 sinisa
have both helped me with my basic questions, although i took some
 time to
look in the archives and man before i posted. this IS the general
 list,
after all. perhaps splitting it into three child lists: novice,
intermediate, and advanced would be advisable. i dunno tho

i wholeheartedly agree, though, that do my homework posts and
 questions
easily located in the man or the lists archive are pretty prevalent
 here.

Re: Changing part of field

2002-01-04 Thread Robert Lucier

I don't think you can do it with a single command. One fairly easy way
is to run a command to generate the sql that will do the update. So
your first statement will be something like:

select concat( 'update mytable
set emailaddress=''', emailaddress,
'''where primary_key_column=',
primary_key_column)

substituting mytable and primary_key_column with your values.
Output the results of that query to a file. Use your favorite text
editor to do the actual replacement of the email address domain. Use
mysql to run that file as a sql script. Update complete.

I have a database that has a emailaddress field. A large number of
 the
entries are from home.com, Excite's ISP. Since Excite is out of
business, Comcast is converting them all to comcast.net next month.

Is there a simple way to change all home.coms to comcast.nets while
retaining the front part of each email address in our database?

A link to the pertinent section of the manual would be most helpful.

backup table required permissions

2002-01-02 Thread Robert Lucier

Hello,

I've searched both the documentation and the mailing list archives but
can't find the answer to this question (although several people seem to
have asked it). Here goes: What permission grants are required to allow
use of the backup table tablename to 'path' command? I can
execute the command as root, but never as a non-root user, even when
that user has grant all on db.* to username@localhost, and show
grants verifies those permissions. I can successfully execute
mysqlhotcopy as that non-root user, but have never gotten backup
table to work.

Any information would be appreciated. I would much prefer to use
backup table so that I can execute the sql from within my existing
application w/o requiring that perl be installed.

Regards,
Rob
