DVB apps are working without such problems.

Because current limitations in Frontend, backend protocol it is very
worse to tune to a channel which is not working. You will stuck at this
channel forever. To recover from this, there are town possibilities:
1. start the setup app and at card input put in a working channel number
at start channel

2.
mysql -u mythtv -p mythconverg
password: mythtv
update cardinput set startchan=1; (1 is the new working start channel)
or if you have more than one input:
select * from cardinput; choose card and:
update cardinput set startchan=1 where cardid=X (X choosed card)
restart backend: /etc/init.d/mythbackend restart (frontends can stay
open, it will reconnect after an error message)

Notice: This is on the todo list of the DVB Devs.

Dunno about that, but it won't hurt you to have a window manager
on the 2nd screen will it? I mean you don't need one, but.

One gotcha, if you are using nvidia video cards and probably some
others is they will only do an xvideo window on the screen they think
is screen 0. (I would think they should let you do it on either but
not both if they only have one set of logic to do xvideo, but what can
you do.)

So you will want the mythfrontend to run on screen 0 as far as the
card is concerned.

With some trickery, this does not have to be screen 0 to the window
manager, however.

And we're talking possible hard crash if you get it wrong.

Actually, I am not sure it's "supported" in the sense it's not in
the config file. You make two config files, one for each card. I
don't know if you can really have two X servers on two heads of the
same video card, that sounds scary to try.

Known bug from a couple days ago. Most likely triggered when a recording
ends on a slave host. There may be a resolution RSN. Thanks for the
independent verification.

I get the same problem, but I don't have a slave backend. I can trigger
this loop by deleting a program or stopping an in progress recording.

[mythtv-users] how to set-up second display for mythfrontend

2005-01-26 Thread Julian Cerruti
Hello all,

I'm still stuck with my problem trying to use the
second screen or a dual-head configuration for
mythfrontend.

In an X server configured with two screens (:0.0
and :0.1), does anyone know how to tell KDE to use
ONLY the first screen instead of both (that is, start
only one kwin, kdesktop and kicker instead of one per
screen).

Another alternative I tested is to use Xnest. It
gives me - almost - the right functionality but it is
too slow to render video: you can tell one frame from
the next at simple eyesight. Does anyone know about
any available alternative to make Xnest perform
better?

Finally, I guess my last option would be to use
two simultaneous X servers. Unfortunatelly, looks like
that is not supported by default in X.org. I've seen
some mention about this topic in backstreet Ruby, but
changing to a specific - backlevel - kernel and
XFree86 distribution doesn't seem like an attractive
option for me. Does anyone have any experience in this
area you might want to share?

More context about what I am trying to do here:
http://mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2005-January/070227.html

Again, I am stuck at this last step. I would
greatly appreciate ANY hint.

Regards,

Julian.

Speaking of 0.17, is there any suggested release timeframe for it? Is
CVS being stablized for 0.17, or is there still alot of loose ends?

Sorry for the delay in reply. Apparently I was having some issues with

Re: [mythtv-users] Favorite Universal Remote? Buying Tips

2005-01-26 Thread Martin Brown
I spent a bit more and got a you-beaut Universal Remote Controls "Osiris"
(MX-350). This has a programable LCD which is VERY useful for something like
MythTV. I bought mine from BlueDo in the States (www.bluedo.com) for about $US150.

I also set up an IR transmitter from the PC so I can generate some discrete
control codes (which the MX-350 learned) to simplify things like switching TV
inputs directly to MythTV.

I'm thinking of buying the RF extender as well since sometimes you have to point
the remote at the TV, sometimes at the digital set top box and sometimes at the
MythTV box.

No problems here, running 2.4.27, with two PVR-250s. I considered going
to 2.6, but I think I'll be staying on 2.4 for the forseeable future;
2.4 is working perfectly well for me, and last time I tried the
bootsplash patches don't work on recent 2.6 releases.

Is it possible to make mythtv forget the old recording history from
within the menus?

In CVS at least (I don't remember if this was in 0.16) there is a
Previously Recorded menu option which lists all your previous recordings
which you can delete by individual item or by title.

I have the new backend up and running under a new hostsname... I have
used nuvimport to move all recordings I wanted to keep. I wasn't sure if
that was the best way of doing it, but from what I read it seemed the
safest. I think the only thing I need now is the history of recorded but
deleted programs.
I am thinking that a mysql dump of that table and import to the new one
should work, but which table and do I need to filter? Also, are the any
issues with hostname, etc?
Tim

I recently moved to a new backend as well.
What I did was centered around three tables: record, recorded and
recrodedmarkup. From what I read, these were the most important
tables to get into the new system.
I used this command to dump each table:
mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg record > record.table.sql
mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg recorded > recorded.table.sql
mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg recordedmarkup > recordedmarkup.table.sql
(I suppose you could dump all three at once, but I wanted to look at
each of them..and I like to do things the hard way).
I then edited the dump files so that the only sql commands left were
the "INSERT into..." commands. I don't need the table building
commands because the tables are already there in the new backends database.
Now, when I tried to import those files into my new database, I got
an erro on the "recorded" table.
So I looked at the new table:
mysql -u root -p mythconverg
mysql> show columns from recorded;
and noticed that the rows lastmodified, filesize, stars,
previouslyshown, and originalairdate were all new in 0.16 (I was
coming from 0.15). The
defaults are NULL, 0, 0, 0, NULL respectively.
I simply added those five values to the end of every "INSERT into ..."
line that was in my recorded.table.sql file. Then the import went
fine.

Thanks, that was a good start. I think "oldrecorded" is the one I
actually needed. I exported that, and removed the table creation stuff.

[mythtv-users] Backend looping after a schedule_change

2005-01-26 Thread Mark Cooke
Hi all,

Current CVS (morning 27-Jan-05), two backends.

After a period of running, a backend will get stuck looping after a
schedule check. It seems easier to provoke this by jumping back and
forth while watching a recording.

Backend1 log shows something like:

How does one move the history of what has been recorded to a new

I saw that, but it doesn't seem quite apropriate to the situation... I
mean that takes all the data - won't it overwrite some of my new
settings? I have both backends running in pararallel for a few weeks, I
don't want to change my setup on the new backend. Also, the new one is
running 0.16 and the old 0.15. I also noticed that nuvexport doesn't
munge the hostname on moved recordings, and that document does... not
sure which is correct, but it seemed like nuvexport was the beter choice.

Once you've created a cut list you then need to bring up the on screen
menu for that recording and choose transcode. This will remove the cut
lists. You may want to make sure that your transcode settings are
correct before you start or you may end up converting a nice compact
mpeg4 file into a jumbo-size rtjpeg.

Having looked at everyone's recommendations, the Radio Shack one looks
good and is quite cheap. Does anyone know where these can be bought in
Australia? I thought Tandy was the Aussie equivalent of Radio Shack
but their remotes are cheap junk.

Any other Australian specific recommendations and where to get them?

Yes, using MythWeb you can define keybindings for jump points.

FWIW, I bought a serial IR receiver off eBay from a guy in the UK
which was cheap (about 5 quid), simple to set up and works a treat.
Once you've done that you can use just about anmy remote you like. I

I don't have a PVR-x50 card but I think it must work in the same way
as cards using bttv drivers. You have to put the cable from the
line-out of the PVR-x50 card imto the line-in of your sound card. The
sound card then captures/records the sound from the TV signal which
gets saved along with the video.

I think you should be able to download the source rpm and modify the spec file
slightly to enable debug (and possibly disable release?) and rebuild the rpms.

Whether or not you consider this harder than the hard way (which I assume meant
compiling from source) is up to you!

That is a negative sir. The initrd process will not put the required

[mythtv-users] Time offset; losing first few seconds of recordings

2005-01-26 Thread Ian Trider
Hello,

I am losing approximately 3 seconds off of the start of my recordings
in MythTV. I am using a PVR-350, so I'm guessing the source of this
delay (the time is sync'd by NTP) is due to the time it takes for the
PVR-350 to tune the tuner.

So, what I would like to do is offset the time (on the system, if
necessary) by roughly three seconds. Setting the pre-record time in
Options isn't particularly helpful because if two programs are
back-to-back, it ignores it.

I thought it would be a straightforward matter to add a delay while
syncing by NTP, but it seems I was wrong.

Any ideas on how I can do this?

So I looked at the new table:
mysql -u root -p mythconverg
mysql> show columns from recorded;

and noticed that the rows lastmodified, filesize, stars,
previouslyshown, and originalairdate were all new in 0.16 (I was
coming from 0.15). The
defaults are NULL, 0, 0, 0, NULL respectively.

I simply added those five values to the end of every "INSERT into ..."
line that was in my recorded.table.sql file. Then the import went
fine.

Mythphone does not even touch the webcam until you enter the mythphone
plugin; so if it is crashing when you run mythfrontend something else is
wrong.

The "Unknown method" error looks like it could be the problem; can you send
me a copy of the ~/.mythtv/MythPhone/siplog.txt file? This may not be
enough as buffering may prevent the information from getting written to disk
during the crash. Ideally an ethereal trace would tell me what the "Unknown
message" is that you are receiving.

[mythtv-users] imdb metadata getting clobbered by frontend

2005-01-26 Thread rsalern5
I'm running one front+backend box (running KnoppMyth R4V5) and one
frontend-only box (XBox). I rip DVDs on the frontend because my backend has no
DVD drive yet, and watch them on both machines. So far so good, until I rename
the videos and pretty them up with imdb metadata and poster pics using video
setup.

On the backend box I can rename the video files ripped from DVD and
successfully grab the imdb info and poster images. The menu has the movie
poster icons and it looks great - as long as I watch the videos on the backend
box.

However, when I bring up the video menu on the frontend XBox, every video's
metadata displays as if they were just ripped - that is, all the metadata for
every ripped DVD gets wiped out (reverts to the default ugly file names, loses
the imdb number, notes, and poster filename). If I do the opposite, i.e. grab
the imdb data on the Xbox, just the opposite happens, i.e. looks ok on the Xbox
until viewing on the KnoppMyth box wipes out the metadata.

In either case, the metadata is clobbered on both machines - not just the one
which first triggers the erasure. Try to watch a video on the backend machine
and the imdb info is back to default values as if the DVDs were just ripped.

I'm going to have a look at the MySQL logs tonight - meanwhile any tips or
pointers on what might be happening here would be appreciated.

-Russ

I think you might find that while /usr/local/bin is in the PATH for
your myth user, the cron job is beibng run as root and it's not in
root's PATH. You could check this by logging on as root and looking at
$PATH.

Why is executing as root? Because it's in /etc/cron.d/ - I think these
jobs execute as root as it doesn't know which other user to execute
them as. There may be a way to tell it but I don't know what that is.
If it was in myth's crontab it would have executed as myth and the
problem would probably not have occurred.

[mythtv-users] frontend dies causes backend to die too

2005-01-26 Thread Brian May
Hello,

I have had this annoying, and 100% reproducible problem:

If the mythtv front-end cannot open the ALSA audio device (e.g. it is
in use by another application), then not only does the frontend die,
but the backend (on another computer) commits suicide, too.

Has anyone else had this problem?

This is mythtv 0.16-1, the Debian packages.

I can live with the fact the frontend dies (a user friendly error
message might be better), but it should not crash the backend.

Also another related issue:

If the backend is restarted, any frontends still running come up with
an error message the next time it tries to access the backend. One the
second attempt it works. It would be nice, IMHO, if it tried to
reopen the connection with the backend first before displaying this
(potentially confusing) error.

You don't need to. The backends share the database that holds this

Thanks for the hint - I will try it.
I am curious - why does the internal video player need this seektable at

mythcommflag did the job. Now seeking is working fine.

Just an FYI, if you want these to work in the Watch Recordings screen
instead of or in addition to MythVideo, there is a perl script in the
contrib folder of CVS called mythrebuilddb (or something similar) that
you can pass a "--ext avi" or similar option to that will add
arbitrary video files to that screen and ask you to fill in the
information needed like channel ID, description, title, etc. and also
runs the mythcommflag --rebuild command against them to build the
seektable.

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 - X via tv-out - tveeprom

2005-01-26 Thread dead
Greetings,
I followed jarod's MythTV on FC3 guide.
After much tinkering I finally got X working over the TV-out for the
pvr-350 running on a fully updated FC3 system. I found the fix for the
tveeprom Error -19 that was occuring (adding the alias in modprobe.conf)
but now X over pvr-350's tv-out no longer works after adding that alias.

I've also never been able to get it to recognize the cable signal
(tuner0 / input type = 4) and be able to change channels, though it did
seem to work piping S-video (svideo0 / input type 6 I think). I'm using
coax cable from the wall that I know works (it works when I plug it into
my tivo). The end result I'm after is to be able to replace my tivo with
my mythtv box, and put another tuner card into it to be able to record 2
shows at once. Just getting it working with 1 tuner is the current goal.

I've done a bit of reading through the various online documentation and
mailing lists, but I can't seem to get it quite right.

Andy,

I'm not at home, so can't see my mythbox at the moment, but the syntax
above doesn't seem to look quite right. Mine were in the form

keycode ### = function

where function would be the relevant key that you wanted it to map to

e.g. keycode 123 = F12

It didn't seem to need to have the repeats. Because I got it to a point
where it was working fairly well (and because other issues with my Mythbox
are causing me more problems), I never worked out the full set of key
names, so as to what the correct way to represent the keys are, I'm not
sure.

As I'm using KnoppMyth, there is a prewritten script to start up the
mythfrontend. I modified the mythfrontend line in that script from
exec mythfrontend;
to
exec xmodmap modmapfile | exec mythfrontend;

I think the script is called KnoppMyth-run in /usr/local/bin (but again
not sure)

Hope that helps. I'm fully aware that my setup with the 771 remote is less
than ideal. I should really work out a way to use lirc properly rather
than hack the kernel code and use modmaps, but I've not a lot of time to
experiment at the moment, and now that the box is in regular use, it's
going to be hard to take it away from the TV without upsetting someone :)

Are you asking for help or just ranting?

I've posted other things related to my problem here and on knoppmyth's

related to my problem.

My inbox is cluttered enough, I don't need yours and half a dozen
other people's daily rants.

Ok, but i have a filter that filters mythtv to another folder so my
inbox doesn't get clutter.

If you would like help, it would have been helpful if you had
described the steps you went through to install the Nvidia drives.
Such as whether you are installing from RPMs or the Nvidia installer.
Also helpful would be to know what you changed in your xorg.conf.

I used the nvidia installer from 6629 to 6111 to 6106, all on fresh
installs. I tried the nvidia sample tvout that comes with knoppmyth. I
used my XF86Config-4 file i use for my sis card with the driver changed
and any sis specifics. I also installed Knoppmyth with the tv option,
which creates a vesa X config file for tvout, and just changed the
driver to nvidia (and removed GLORE and added glx like nvidia
mentions). I also used the nv driver and that gives like a scrambled
picture on my tv. All of this i had mentioned before.

The
X error messages would also be really helpful to know and would
probably allow someone to solve your problem in 30 seconds.

Like my message said there was no error message. It goes through the
different resolutions/color depth in the X config file and finally
settles on an X session with about 13-20 vertical white bars. If i
cntrl alt f1 out i get huge huge huge letters from the console. I can
tell it's the console i can read one word. But this was also mentioned
in my message.

Since
none of this was in your message, I'm guessing it was just a rant.

it just isn't always easy. If you want easy, go run BeyondTV or

I'm sorry you felt that i didn't provide enough information or
something. I've been messing with two nvidia cards for a few days now,

sis card works flawlessly, well almost, it works flawlessly in X, fb is
another story), but i don't have another tv with svideo in and thats all
my nvidia cards have as out, no composite to try on another tv. I've
searched and asked on the nvidia forums. I've tried all suggestions
mentioned, except for Brads email the other day on how to debug X
better. Just haven't had time.

Re: [mythtv-users] MythLCD questions

2005-01-26 Thread David Wood
I am the least knowledgeable person about MythLCD, probably, but I did
look through the source.

My impression of it is that it's a bit of proof of concept code,
demonstrating how you could do integration with LCDproc. The only way to
get it is to rebuild all your myth components from source with the lcd
portions turned on. It seems like somewhere between a demo and a
work-in-progress; in fact, in my brief inspection it wasn't clear if there
is anything working yet.

It looks like a neato project, though, if you can code, know the relevant
codebases (or want to learn them), are willing to work from the cvs tree
instead of the release, and have the time to devote to this decidedly
non-core feature. I keep meaning to play with it but, there is always
something more important...

Your system is fast enough for many PVR-250s. They do not use significant
CPU to record. Only playback needs CPU. My own test showed a 750 mhz
Athlon to be more than adequate for playback (without xvmc).
I guess I have heard people say a 400mhz celeron is too slow, the minimum
is in the middle, perhaps a 600mhz?

Plus there is a new patch in the works that takes even less CPU for playback,
so the number may drop.
See my earlier note from yesterday for tips on making it easier to debug
your X display.
Try the 6111 driver from nvidia, I found it easier to get going than the 6629.

I'm not sure if you just want the recorded table or the whole
mythconverg database. If you want the whole ball of
wax for a new install...

Create the mythconverg table on your new backend with

# mysqladmin create mythconverg
(I don't think it has an e, does it?)

Then dump out the entire contents of the myth db...

# mysqldump --quick mythconverg | gzip > mythconverg.contents.gz

Then get it over to your new backend...

# scp mythconverg.contents.gz newhost:/
(enter password when propmted)

get over to your other host...

# gunzip < mythconverg.contents.gz | mysql mythconverg

and voila! Your old database is on your new backend.
I'm not sure if there are entries in any of the tables that
need to be changed. You may want to hunt around in your
old database for any references to your old backend name
or your old backend ip address.

I do this so often at work it's in a bash script, so I just
cut and pasted from there to here and changed the
database name.

Good luck!

I'm trying to adjust the playback color/hue/brightness and so on and it

Um, yeah. When you use these keys it updates the database.
You can see these with:
mysql> select chanid,contrast,brightness,colour,hue from channel;
You could set all the saturation, for example, at once with:
mysql> update channel set colour=35000;
then adjust individual stations with the "G" key functions.
Hint: don't pause or rewind when adjusting with G or you
won't see the change until playback catches up to the point
in time when you pressed the key =).

Matt, you need to take the output from your PVR-350 and pipe it back
in to your soundcard's line-in.

Then your soundcard output goes to your TV.

Depending on your cables, you'll need to get 2 cables, stereo minijack
to RCA male to connect to the PVR-350 outputs, and a stereo minijack
to male/female depending on how it connects to your TV, if you have
male/male extension cords etc.

Should udev not play the game after reboot, log in as root and run the
commands you had to do to get /dev/dvb/adapter0 to appear the first
time. Check again for the existence of /dev/dvb/adapter0/ and if it is
there copy it like this:

# cp -a /dev/dvb /etc/udev/devices/

To allow user 'mythtv' access to the device files change ownership like this:

# chown mythtv:mythtv /etc/udev/devices/dvb/adapter0/*

This makes udev create the device files on every boot and gives
'mythtv' access to them.

mythcommflag did the job. Now seeking is working fine.
Just an FYI, if you want these to work in the Watch Recordings screen
instead of or in addition to MythVideo, there is a perl script in the
contrib folder of CVS called mythrebuilddb (or something similar) that
you can pass a "--ext avi" or similar option to that will add arbitrary
video files to that screen and ask you to fill in the information needed
like channel ID, description, title, etc. and also runs the mythcommflag
--rebuild command against them to build the seektable.

This is a hard question. Indeed, only some users will guess this.
On the other hand, I am loathe to add complexity to UIs. Mythweb doesn't
actually technically have a movie search, the "Movie" link is just a
call to the search page with a preset query for the category type being
a movie. You would not want the star choice to appear on a non-movie
search (it's meaningless there) so now you might want to detect it
is the special movie search and display the SELECT box in the HTML if
it was. This could all be done, of course.

Or keep the interface simple and instead link to a HELP page for searching,
since it's pretty easy to remember you type in "" to search for 4-star
movies. In fact, I've tried that in various situations since the stars
appear in the display, you think you might be able to search for them but
of course they are not in the actual text.

Sorry the patch was garbled in the mailing list I would have attached it
had I known.

People have debated revising the autoexpire code to prioritize on more
than just time, and priority is an obvious choice. Again, complexity of
UI is a big issue.

Long term I want to see pools of storage (permanent, explicit, automatic,
recommended, suggested, deleted) where roughly a recording made in one
of these categories doesn't delete a higher level one, ie. only made if
there is space. Making it be the same as the recording priority is
the simplest UI so it's probably what will happen.

Both. I don't know if there is a UI the powerSearch yet, but your
search field would look something like:
categorytype = 'movie' AND stars > 0.9
To catch 4 star movies.

I tried adding -dpi 100 to my X startup just now and it didn't seem
to make much difference to the fonts - if anything it made the text
a bit bigger and it was quite big enough. What it did do was prevent
Myth working out that I had a 16:9 display because it overrode the
DisplaySize setting in my X config.

How does one move the history of what has been recorded to a new backend

Get a monkey wrench and tighten down each F connector in the
house (not just the one connected to the card) to be a little
more than finger tight.
I believe it is an 11 or 13mm wrench. Had to do it last weekend. :)
Also of some help is terminators on any unused jack. RS sell packs of
2 for ~1.50. And then try a signal amplifier.
I use an adjustable wrench. The explanation I'd heard is that
if the connector is loose it may not be fully terminated and the
cable may act as an antenna picking up interference. What I've
found in my own experience is that I have a lot of drops and
splitters all over the house and a bad channel in one location
may actually be the result of a loose connection in another room
even if the picture isn't as bad where the loose connection is.
These suggests are for a week signal, which will cause the problem you
are describing and can be easily checked by plugging the cable
straight into the TV. Someone else suggested adding a tuner type to
your modprob.conf, which it could also be.
If the tuner type was wrong it would have the wrong freq info
and all the channels would be mis-tuned. An interference pattern
on one or a handful of stations is most likely a signal problem.

So if I make adjustments on every channel using the G key, the last
adjustments are saved for that channel for all future LiveTV viewing and
recording? This sounds like exactly what I am looking for.

Not with hardware encoders. However you can apply a playback filter
to correct the problem on a per channel basis.
Oops, brain fart =). Of course the channel table holds the tuner
picture settings for the v4l ioctls. These can can be modified
directly in the database or with the "G" key in live TV. These
modify the settings that the hardware or software encoders will use
whenever it starts encoding that channel again. These adjustments
do not affect HDTV or DVB as there is no local encoding and the
colors are set in the digital information already when received.

The "adjust" filter can also be used to tweak the chroma and luma
ranges when recording for software encoding only (this is probably
what you were thinking about).
The "F" key can also be used for Xv adjustments for the output
regardless of hardware, software or digital if you've selected
the "Use Xv controls" option.

2005-01-26 Thread Cory Papenfuss
Right. You misunderstood me. I said "strange omission on the part of
the hardware". I would have thought the hardware (i.e. the PVR-250
card) would have had the ability to (i.e. by programming registers, just
like programming encoding qualities such as bitrate and so on) adjust
the color/hue/saturation/balance, etc. of the signal coming out of the
tuner before going into the compressor (i.e. all on the card).

ivtvctl

  -y --set-ctrl=[ctrl]=
sets the control to the value specified [VIDIOC_S_CTRL]
 ctrl:
brightness =<#> Picture brightness, or more precisely, the black
level. [0 - 255]
  hue=<#> Hue or color balance. [-128 - 127]
saturation =<#> Picture color saturation or chroma gain. [0 - 127]
contrast =<#> Picture contrast or luma gain. [0 - 127]
  volume =<#> Overall audio volume. [0 - 65535]
mute =<#> Mute audio, i. e. set the volume to zero [boolean]
It's there within the saa7115 capture chip. No resistors
required... just an adjustment on the capture chip before it even gets to
the MPEG encoder. Don't know how to have mythtv do it on a per channel
basis, but that's been more or less covered by others.

Yeah. I got the Harmony 676 remote for Xmas. It's on

computer through USB and download all of your remote
profiles to it from their website. They had the
profiles for all of my remotes including the pvr-250
grey remote. What I really like about it is you can
set up activities like 'Watch MythTV' or 'Watch a DVD'
and it turns on all the appropriate components and
puts them on the right inputs. Logitech is having a

[mythtv-users] onboard TV out using i810 with Xorg

2005-01-26 Thread Travis Osterman
I progressing nicely with my fedora => gentoo transition on my mythtv
system. My current issue is with getting the TV out to work with my
onboard chipset. In fedora (using XFree86), I just unplugged the vga
adapter and TV out worked flawlessly. Now, I am using Xorg and my old
XFree86 config file doesn't work as an xorg.conf file (even after a
lot of editting).

My question is then two-fold.

1) If someone is using the onboard TV out with the i810 driver (I'm
actually using the 865 chipset), I would love to see a working
Xorg.conf.

2) Is there a good autoconfiguring, xorg-based, iso distribution that
I can steal a working xorg.conf for my TV from? I've tried Knoppix,
which works fine, except it uses XFree86.

Thanks to all.

RE: [mythtv-users] Sound from DVD and Transcoded Recordings Doesn'tWork

2005-01-26 Thread Matt Mencel
Thanks Will...

Well that cleared up a few things then. I'm using the tuner input on the
PVR so the line-in on the PVR should be left empty. I do have a cable
running from the DVD to the sound card...I guess I just need to go out the
sound card into the AUX in on my stereo receiver. Wish I could have
everything (video & audio) all going into the same thing (TV). I'll give
this a try and see how it goes.

Thanks again...

The line in on your 350 is for when you use the composite or s-video inputs.
It should be connected to your picture source unless you are using the tuner
input. In that case it should not be connected to anything. The 350 outputs
the sound as part of the mpeg stream and does not require a connection to
your sound card.

Your dvd drive on the other hand does require a connection to the sound
card. There is usually an input on the inside of the computer specifically
for a CD or DVD drive and you should have a cable directly connecting the
drive audio output to the card. AFAIK when you play dvd's myth will activate
the standard CD audo input unless you configure it to use another input. Not
sure how to do that but I am sure its possible :)

Good luck.

Bug in Qt. The GUI is scaled so the fonts need to have a size
based on a DPI relative to the default GUI. Last I recall, David

DPI for an application regardless of the X DPI. These just plain
didn't work as advertised :-(.

First off I must say, read the friggin' manual :)

What you want is to edit the recording and mark the commercial skip areas.
Do a little reading and looking back thru the archives. This is covered very
well by the manual and in the list archives.

It would probably be more user-friendly to have a dropdown box next to
the search window that listed off:

not that I mind typing in the stars, just that future users wouldn't

Freq 10773000 with Symbolrate 2200 and H is on both, manualy defining to

Re: [mythtv-users] Need help with sound problems in mythtv 0.16 on Fedora FC3

Per Weisteen wrote:
Hi
Have installed MythTV on a Hush Technologies box using Jarod's

live TV and recordings.
When I start up Watch TV the picture is ok but there is no sound. If I
switch channel the sound is suddenly ok. There is no sound when
showing TV recordings.
When I first installed MythTV I used KDE but I were unable to get any
sound at all. No system sound but aplay seemed to work occationally.
Tried first /dev/adsp but MythTV always complained about not finding
the device even if world had rwx on it. I switched to Gnome, turned on
Sound Server (esd) and got Gnome sound events to work ok but only
after MythTV had ben started (uses /dev/dsp) and I had switched
channel once. Any help immensely appreciated.

TV Card is WinTV PVR-350.
Sound card is on-board Realtek ALC650 with AC'97 codec 5.1 channel on
a P4M-865G MAX card from fic.com.tw. The audio-out from the PVR-350 is
switched back to line-in on the sound card. TV display is for the
moment on my standard X monitor.
Base installation is Fedora FC3 with kernel updated to 2.6.9-1.724_FC3.

Hi all who might have contemplated replying - I found the error. I used
the wrong msp3400 module, just as stated in the
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html
The problem was that I had actually replaced the stock msp3400 but
obviously with the wrong one. A little rpm'ing found the following

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ rpm -qal|grep msp3400
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.724_FC3/updates/drivers/media/video/msp3400-ivtv.ko

/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.724_FC3/updates/drivers/media/video/msp3400.ko
belonging to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ rpm -qal|grep msp3400|xargs rpm -qf
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.9-1.724_FC3-0.2.0-60_rc3d.rhfc3.at
kernel-2.6.9-1.667

video4linux-kmdl-2.6.9-1.724_FC3-20041005_125709-53.rhfc3.at
So I seem to have used the video4linux version. After renaming that
module, copying the msp3400-ivtv.ko into msp3400.ko and reloading the
module the sound worked perfect !

A little unsure though because the HOWTO states that |modinfo msp3400 |
grep "parm: *standard" should return |"parm: standard int" but it
doesn't. The HOWTO needs possibly an update.

Cheers !

Re: [mythtv-users] X and PVR 350

2005-01-26 Thread Will Otte
Hi Chris -
I recently had a problem similar to yours. See below for my comments.
Chris Martin wrote:
I've finally managed to pass some video through my PVR 350' s TV out* so the
next step is to try and get X running. For some reason IVTV is not being
run while the system boots, so I'm currently doing:
# /sbin/depmod -a
# /sbin/modprobe ivtv
Look in Jarod's guide where it talks about building the initrd. This
will allow the TV out to work during boot up.

Then editing my xorg.conf file to give me the appropriate settings and
pressing ctr-alt-backspace to restart X. Unfortunately, and somewhat
predictably, the X Server refuses to restart.
Some information.
I'm using FC3 Following Jarod's guide
I'm in the UK so I'm trying to get the thing to display on a PAL TV
cat /var/log/messages |grep "iTVC15 TV out" returns:
Jan 26 16:22:14 localhost kernel: ivtv-osd: fb1: iTVC15 TV out frame buffer
device
/sbin/lspci -v returns:
02:09.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2
Encoder (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hauppauge computer works Inc. WinTV PVR-350
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 11
   Memory at f000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2
MY IVTV Init suggests I'm using ivtv: version 0.3.2 (c), which isn't the
one that Jarod says I should be using, although I did install it from the
at-testing rpms. If part of the problem is that I should be using ivtv
0.2.0rc3c then I need to know how to 'downgrade'.
I've also attached my modprobe.conf and xorg.conf files as it's probably in
one of those that the problem lies.
I would suggest that you grab the latest release version of IVTV from here:
http://205.209.168.201/~ckennedy/ivtv/ivtv-0.2.0-rc3e.tgz
compile, and install it. This release contains a patch that solves a
problem some folks (myself included) have been having with FC3/ PVR 350
TV out.

Keep in mind that you will have to make sure to uninstall the kernel
modules installed by apt.

/-Will

the stars rating is stored as a separate field in the database, so
I was hoping this would be an easy thing to search on.
Yes. In Search Lists->Movies the views are based on stats. If you
use the PREVVIEW and NEXTVIEW (Home and End by default) it cycles
through All. 4 stars, At least 3 1/2 stars, At least 3 stars and
At least 2 stars. I look at the 4 star list all the time. Most
of the search pages have views. The New Titles page has views for
Movies, Series and Specials which are in your listings for the
first time. All the Search Words pages allow you to cycle through
each of your stored keywords by simply pressing Home and End.
A related question is whether it is possible to automatically record
all movies with at least a certain number of stars. Might be a nice
feature to have...
You can do this and much more with the new Custom Record feature.
One of the examples provided is Sci-fi B-movies which searchs
for and records one each of movies that are category Science
fiction with 2 stars or less and a release date before 1970.

Hi,
Gavin Hurlbut wrote:
First off, it's not "my" software. Secondly, bitching and complaining when
you obviously haven't done your research (such as reading the -dev mailing
list to see that the DVB Patch had been committed to CVS), and haven't kept
current with CVS... That's not a problem with the software. That's a problem
with the user.
I don't agree with that. Software guidelines and research about software
engineering tells a complete other view. They say the problem user does
not exist. (I know that this is a very provoking statement)

I cannot be the duty of the user to read a complete mailing list to get
a software running.
The duty of an user is to read documenation like a handbook, an usage
guide, a howto or anything else in this form.
That was what I have done to run my mythtv and my experience was that
documentation had lots of holes or obselete parts. Especially DVB setup
is not described very well.
Btw the best software in the intention of software enginering is
intuitional usable software, because documentation is not needed there
(but I always say, continue your dream).

After some hints from mailing lists to
http://www.digitalregime.com/mythdvb/ I get my mythtv running.

Personally for open source projects I don't write back to people and
critize their attitude. This always frights users off. It is clear in
such situation that some people are frustrated because of bad
documentation (yes the problem is very well know by an open source
project I'm development member), but nobody of us writes (or should
write) such mails to the people. We try to help them... and come on this
is a user list and not a development list ;-)
If you get lots of mails like that, perhaps it is time to do something
against that? When nothing will be done until I get some more time , I
will to try to write a complete howto, but I cannot do that without
help. Because imho a change here is needed.

So don't complain about attitude, my original post was more from the
frustration and anger about the software and that is not ok, but your
reaction was also not ok for my opinion. I did not offend you (I hope
so) in my original post, so why have you done that to me or the cattles?
They cannot answer back, I can ;-).

Btw. another persons has told me why -march=pentiumpro and I can
understand that. Perhaps if you want to talk to optimization guru go to
http://www.fefe.de. He had done a very good presentation about gcc
optimization a few years ago :-).

It looks like I was basically correct in my understanding, except that
the changes in 2.1 affect the program guide which overlays the video,
while the changes in 2.2 seem to affect the other overlays while
playing video.

I've not got all of these fitting on the screen, but have an
additional problem. Some of the setup menus are too full.
For example, the

  Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Playback

menu is so large that the Back and Next buttons are below the
bottom of the window that myth is using for the display. This
isn't an overscan problem, as I can see the bottom edge of the
window. Any suggestions for this?

Similarly, there are many menus in which I can only see part of the
help text. (And this was a problem even before resizing the output
window.) Can the help text be scrolled?

Thanks! That works perfectly. Isn't open source wonderful?

By the way, the patch is a bit corrupted in that archive, but I made
the changes by hand. I've attached the patch here in case others
want to try it. (I didn't do the HD labelling part, though.)

I think it might be practical if limited to 4 star movies, especially
if expiry can be made more sophisticated. Large movies recorded by
such a rule could be made to expire earlier than other recordings, for
example. I'd also like to be able to have different expiry times
based on the priority of a recording. Are features like this in the
works?

Sounds like a nice new feature. Is this to do the recording or just
the searching?

Re: [mythtv-users] bob deinterlacing and animated shows

2005-01-26 Thread toad six
Based on Brad and Denier's comments, it seems unlikely that I'll find
a solution for using Bob or any other deinterlacing filter to fix the
interlacing issues - instead, I would have to explore the transcoding
route - which unfortunately, is much too complex for me.

So, my plan of attack should be simply getting rid of the lines on my
TV, which like Brad said, shouldn't be there to begin with.

I am driving my TV at 720x480, using the following modeline:

Modeline "720x480" 26.7 720 736 808 896 480 481 484 497

Overscan is enabled by using Option "TVVScan" "over" in my xorg.conf file
Within MythTV, I have Vertical and Horizontal overscan percentage set
to +8 - does this actually affect the video output? I thought it only
changed things like the size of the OSD.

I've read about some patches provided by Terry Barnaby that resolve
some scaling issues, but they are only for 720x576 PAL video. Could
that be my issue? Does anybody have the equivalent for NTSC?

Thanks for everyone's help

Thanks for telling me this. I tried with -dpi 100, and this does
in fact fix *both* problems. Now the fonts are a good size, and
the GUI is fairly snappy.

I find it a little ironic that myth needs an incorrect dpi setting in
order to get things the correct size. The point of telling X your
screen's dpi is so that applications can choose font sizes in a way
that makes them show up the right size... Is this a bug lurking
somewhere, or a design decision I don't understand?

[mythtv-users] X and PVR 350

2005-01-26 Thread Chris Martin
I've finally managed to pass some video through my PVR 350' s TV out* so the
next step is to try and get X running. For some reason IVTV is not being
run while the system boots, so I'm currently doing:
# /sbin/depmod -a
# /sbin/modprobe ivtv

Thanks,

Chris

*If anybody knows why my PVR 350 initialises with the SAA7127 PAL settings
but then switches to NTSC whenever I remove and then reload the SAA7127
module
then I'd be most greatful!

I also use a RS 15-2116. I've used the JP1 interface to re-program it
to mimic my wireless keyboard and avoid LIRC. It works great. The
best thing about this remote is the community built up around it over
at hifi-remote.com. They can show you how to do just about anything
with it.

Someone recommended the All-for-One remotes. AFAIK, most are the
exactly the same as the Radio Shack models internally -- Just
different branding and slightly different button placement.

I hate working with the expensive remotes that have a touch screen
LCD? Yuck! And you shoud see the looks my wife gives them.

www.hifi-remote.com really should be your starting point for remote
control questions. I'm suprised Jarod doesn't have the link in his
guide...

Right.

It seems that the card is capable of them if I am reading this thread
correctly:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/50006#50006

It's a little off the topic of what I want but it seems to demonstrate
the the test_ioctl tool can do what I want.

Indeed. G seems to have some adjustments in LiveTV. I was not sure if
those were adjusting the recorded stream or the output of the recorded
stream though.

So these kind of adjustments made at record time on a per channel basis
is what I am looking for.

I am using the TV-Out of a PVR-350 - so for MPEG2 files the internal
video player is giving me a very good picture quality.
But there are two problems (one is only a little bit confusing the other
one is really annoying):
1. the length of the video is not determined correctly, it even jitters
while the movie is playing.
2. "fast forward" is extremely slow when playing the video from a slow
media (WLAN) - it seems that the player first thas to read the whole
file before it can skip properly.
Is there an easy solution for this, or is someone working on this?

Have you built seek tables for the videos using mythcommflag? If not
you'll have issues seeking within the file.
