[mythtv-users] Mythfilldatabase and danish xmltv grabbing
Hi all. I've been running mythtv before (a version 0.11 or something), and finally got around to reinstalling it on a freshly reinstalled gentoo box. After fighting with the bttv-driver, xawtv and other stuff, I am now where I can say that the box as such is capable of watching tv - just not through mythtv. Problem in a nutshell: I live in Denmark (Europe), and mythfilldatabase is acting up. Sample output: emilie root # mythfilldatabase - Start of XMLTV output - config file /root/.mythtv/Television.xmltv does not exist, run me with --configure -- End of XMLTV output -- Error in 1:1: unexpected end of file Updating icons for sourceid: 1 Failed to fetch some program info emilie root # mythfilldatabase --configure illegal option: '--configure' (use --help) emilie root # mythfilldatabase --manual ### ### Running in manual channel configuration mode. ### This will ask you questions about every channel. ### - Start of XMLTV output - config file /root/.mythtv/Television.xmltv does not exist, run me with --configure -- End of XMLTV output -- Error in 1:1: unexpected end of file Updating icons for sourceid: 1 Failed to fetch some program info emilie root # Searching the mail archives hasn't helped me (maybe wrong search criteria?). Can anyone help? (Yes, I know - running as root may not be the best idea. I am however in the process of setting up the box :-) ) Thank you in advance, /Jens ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Hard Drive Question
I'm not really sure you would gain much in terms of quiet or a cool drive. Many laptop drives I've used - specifically Hitachi/IBM travelstar drives - are actually quite noisy. You'd get a lot more bang for your buck by buying a seagate, which are very quiet. Also, laptop drives get hot, especially when you run them under full load like you would with myth. Another consideration is drive speed. I'm not sure what seek times are, but they generally only go at 4200 RPM (though I have seen some 5400rpm ones as I recall). At that rate though, you might get a lot of prebuffering pauses (and thus jerkiness in playback) due to the slow RPMs. Also, the cost per GB is exorbantly high in a laptop drive as compared to a desktop drive. You can likely get a 160GB-200GB Seagate (especially after rebates) for what you'd pay for a 60-80GB laptop drive. Bottom line is a desktop drive will be much better suited in a desktop machine than a laptop drive. Hey all, I've had a myth box for a couple weeks running KnoppMyth v4r5 and have enjoyed it alot. Unfortunatly, the drive I used is getting more and more bad blocks, and now they're starting to cause kernel panics when mythbackend trys to commercial detect and watch live tv, etc. It was a "bad" drive to begin with, but it's what I had to build myself a proof of concept box. I'm not using bootsplash. I'm on FC2 and it uses grub boot loader. By default that did a graphical boot which I removed as I like to see all the messages when it's booting up. I did create a background image which I display during the window manager startup which is a MythTV image with some text saying "Press xxx on the remote to start MythTV" - nicer than a blank screen. I've been wondering what would be a good way of taking this further by popping up a screen which shows a picture of the remote with some text describing each button - just a static image, nothing fancy. What prog could be used to pop up the image over MythTV - it needs to do it pretty much instantly so a web browser is out - and could it be programmed to go away by pressing any button on the remote (presumably it could if it had lirc built in rather than relying on irexevent)? Did you even read what you quoted from my post above? :) I said I'm starting working on code to detect the aspect ratio changes. I record a few shows that are letterboxed and have been putting some thought into this lately. I also have some code that should allow the flagger to use the aspect changes detected in the decoder as well, but I don't have a sample file to test that with yet. Should have one soon. So anyway, aspect ratio detection will probably be the next thing added to "ALL", since it's fairly easy to implement and is a very good indicator of the distinction between what is show and what is commercial. This will be after 0.17 though, I don't plan on adding any new detection functionality to the flagger before 0.17. Re: [mythtv-users] difference in "check for duplicates in"
I'm no expert on this, but this is what I gather: Previous recordings are programs you've recorded before, and deleted (without selecting Delete but record again or whatever that option is). Current recordings are programs you currently have on the hard drive. All records are both of the above. So, if you wanted to record a show every time it was on, but only if there wasn't a current copy of it on the drive, you'd use Current, if you wanted to only record it, watch it, and have Myth ignore it from then on, you'd do All. RE: [mythtv-users] DVD rip idea
There has been some discussion of this exact thing on the forums and after some good hints and a lot of research, I finally got it working. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the kewl progress display the current Myth Rip does, but at least it gets the job done. I built a shell script to do it all (out of several pre-existing ones -- thanks for the great start Scott!) and then changed the Import DVD menu to Import DVD Track and added a menu Import Entire DVD, I also added Video Manager from Setup into this menu to have quick access to define IMDB info for the DVDs I rip without all that extra navigation. Here's what it does/I did: 1. Play sound1 to confirm to the user that ripping has started 2. I use dvdbackup to create a temporary directory that contains an exact copy of the dvd. It has the added side effect of not leaving the drive mounted after doing so. 3. I use mkisofs to create a single ISO image file from the directory tree created by dvdbackup. 4. I move the ISO to the myth/video directory and cleanup the temporary directory 5. Play sound2 to let the user know that ripping has finished and eject the drive for a further visual cue. 4. I edited Video Player settings and added the filetype ISO to it with the custom launch application of Xine (full-screen, etc.) which can read an ISO file and play menus correctly (mostly.) 5. I go into the Media Library, Watch Videos -- and voila! Single entries for entire DVDs with integrated IMDB info. Playing them will invoke Xine however, rather than mplayer as a result of the custom filetype mentioned above. I am working on a How-To that covers all these issues and will post them to this forum when complete. However, it's getting late tonight and I have to work in the morning so it probably won't be till next weekend before I have all the steps clearly defined so I don't get pummeled with support questions :-) However, if you know what you're doing and brave enough, (and the mailing list allows attachments) I have attached the script here for your exploration, however, I am not taking support emails about it for the time being. Please wait for the How To. NOTE that you should edit it and change the first block of parameters to match your system. Be sure to store it somewhere useful and give it the right +rx attributes and user/group permissions to run it from mythtv (not just root!) You know I have been thinking for awhile that maybe the main myth site can use some major updating, to make it more resourceful for the noobs coming in and give it a sleeker look. At this point there is quite a bit of outdated material on the site, particularly unused section with plenty of potential: http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=Topics also, linking the bugs section to the bugzilla site seems like a good idea to me old screenshots with missing lists of new features: http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythFeatures old background, missing a bunch of the HDTV and DVB development that has been going on: http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythInfo I'm not meaning this to bash the site or the project because I know the guide was quite helpful in getting me started and I love my setup back home greatly, but does anyone else agree that it could be put towards some good use. And the .17 release gives a good excuse to update everything thats included (a lot of the HD and DVB patches i'm referring to CVS as well as the time stretching, better commercial detection, better amd64 support, and all the other stuff you hear about on the dev list) Now I'm not saying isaac get your act together and make the site better, but if you think this is a good idea, I'm sure that theres plenty of us here in this apparant 100k that would love to help give the site a more modern look and make it more functional. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] MythTV in Jan 30 NY Times
What amazes me is how the NYT, a newspaper that was part of one of the most famous free speech cases in US history (NTY v. Sullivan), seems to paint something like MythTV in a bad light. Isn't our experimenting, posting information, and sharing ideas (and yes, even files) at the forefront of the 1st Amendment and free speech in this country? Instead of being hailed for doing something great and innovative (hell, I'd settle for even legal and interesting), we're instead painted as "rebels", "mischieveous" and only out for "instant gratification" as we try to "outwit" the television industry. What bullshit. Has the NYT's reporting staff (no offense to your friend, but I'm painting him with the same brush) become such a bunch of corporate lapdogs that they have completely lost objectivity? The article makes it sound like there is rampant abuse of these poor multi-billion dollar media conglomorates. Somehow, the hundreds of thousands of myth-tv users (and that number sounds a bit high to me) who make no money off this are just ravaging poor CBS, NBC and ABC like a virgin on prom night. Instead of focusing on the doomsday scenarios of mythboxes gone mad and TV shows being traded like crazy, why don't they focus on what is ACTUALLY happening. If you want to talk about piracy, fine. Just don't put Myth in with that group. It'd be like me lumping the NYT in with the Weekly World News. Or, better yet, how about an article that focuses on a different paradigm, maybe saying that it's OK for people to trade because all the DVDs are still flying off the shelves like mad, and that any purported television revenue losses from piracy are HIGHLY disputed by actual statistics. But, that would be too radical apparently. Instead, it's much easier to rehash the same story that anyone who makes/builds their own media device is in bed with criminals and is just out to rip off the system. But don't worry, soon you'll be able to buy the shows that you get for free today, and for only $1.00 too. What a bargain. Thanks, NYT. You've exposed this whole mythtv group for what it is: a giant criminal enterprise that engages in the "trafficking" of television. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/30/arts/television/30manl.html?ei=5090&en=e82b9db497df2928&ex=1264741200&partner=rssuserland&pagewanted=all&position= On Sun, 30 Jan 2005 14:01:09 -0800, Brad Templeton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Sun, Jan 30, 2005 at 03:40:54PM -0500, Phil Bridges wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > I'm surprised that no one has yet commented on the mention of MythTV > > > on the front page of the Arts seciton of today's (Sunday, Jan 30) New > > > York Times > > > (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/30/arts/television/30manl.html). > > > > > > It's quite unfortunate that the article is mainly about unauthorized > > > distribution of TV shows over the net. Hello all, Have played a whole DVD using Xine on my Debian (unstable) MythTV box, with an EPIA Mini-ITX MII 12000 motherboard, outputting via the onboard TV out (via the PVR-350 is terrible, only plays at 2fps!) and while the DVD and subtitles all work fine, there is a slight jerk - maybe every half second, and it is only really noticeable when people are moving or the camera is panning - which gets quite annoying after a while - any ideas on how to improve this? The kernel is 2.4.28, custom compiled, using the VIA video driver supplied with XFree86: (II) LoadModule: "via" (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o (II) Module via: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.3.0.1, module version = 4.1.30 Module class: XFree86 Video Driver ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6 Thanks very much for your help in advance Cheers - Piers ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] LIRC question: irw works, mythtv does nothing
It should be in ~/.mythtv/lircrc Delete the other file out of there to avoid confusion. It seems that you might have the wrong prog listed. For example, my Channel Up looks as follows: begin prog = mythtv button = CH+ repeat = 4 config = Up end I'm unsure about your remote (what brand is it?), but I would try to make your channel up looks as follows and see what happens (you'll probably want to reboot after making the change just to be sure it holds). begin prog = mythtv button = ChannelUp repeat = 3 config = Key Up CurrentWindow end (on the "config =" part, you may change it to just say "Key Up" or even just "Up" too and see what happens). I would just try changing it to "prog = mythtv" first and seeing if that fixes it. If so, just make those changes as necessary in your lircrc file. There were a few things that I had to tweak in the newer blank/black-frame detection, but I hadn't heard too many strong positive comments on the new method. It seems to be working a lot better for me as well, but there are still places where it misdetects. I added some debugging code that can be turned on which will help me better figure out why certain parts get missdetected sometimes, so hopefully fixing these missdetects will be easier to fix in the future. -- Chris ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] MythTv hits Slashdot, New York Times
Wow, is everyone ready for the big time? Too bad the article is so focused on the "stealing" of content, and the media corps defending their industry from "piracy." It also stinks that MythTV is being lumped in with all the software that people use for copyright infringement. Last I checked it wasn't really very handy for sharing files, and is designed for handling media in ways that are well recognized by legal precedent. Re: [mythtv-users] Transcoding settings for DVB source
Cheers Andy, I managed to get this working, thanks. I transcoded a 30 minute show to MPEG4 which made it frop from 1.6Gig to ~700MB, which is a nice size, and still good quality. My question is, is this some unique MPEG4 container, or is it normal DivX/XviD? The reason I ask is even when I download the whole NUV file to my windows box, none of my media players will play it even when I rename the file to .avi yet my Windows box normally plays DivX/XviD just fine. My ultimate plan is to be able to transcode some recordings to XviD so I can play them on the train on my PDA whilst also being able to leave the original high quality show on my Myth box. There are also a few other detection ideas > on my TODO to add that will help the ALL method be more accurate. There is -- though it's certainly not a small project -- a near-perfect algorithm for commercial detection. Namely, you watch people. You arrange so that as people watch a show, you see what they watch at 1x speed, and what they skip over. You upload this live (and anonymously) to a server. Nicer early-watchers might even take the effort to hit specific remote codes (not just the skipping/FF/rewind buttons) to say "yes, this is exactly where a commercial starts." They would do this because they appreciate others doing it when then watch a show delayed. On a popular PVR, many people will watch the show near-live or just after airing (before mythcommflag can even run in most cases.) Once you have data from enough such people -- the more people who watch the sooner that happens -- you will find that the data converges. There will be outliers to discard of course, but eventually you will see most user's data pointing at some very specific points in the show. That's where the commercials are, and no amount of trickery can fool thousands of natural intelligences. You can combine this data, if desired, with the usual techniques of looking for transitions and groups of transitions, blank frames etc. But I suspect it would be enough on its own. In addition, if people are not watching soon, you can have the automatic algorithms make their guesses and just notice where the human viewers correct it. This is something even easier to do, the screen pops up "I think a commercial starts here" and the user clicks, "No, that's wrong" etc. Also you want to do the blank detection etc. to provide time bases so that user actions are timed relative to these events, so you don't have to worry about clock drift etc. This is of course an entirely new system of doing things, and a considerable coding project. It ends the arms race on commercial elimination entirely. It can also do more than commercial skipping. For example, in sports, it can provide skipping of boring elements like pitching changes, and single 15 and 30 second commercial breaks that are very hard to auto-detect. Imagine that they change pitchers and ZOOM, you are at the pitch, perhaps with a summry of the closed caption of what the announcers said displayed on the side of your screen. If you like this of course, it would be an optional mode. Imagine a football game that's nothing but plays. Imagine the academy awards where they zoom at fast forward (you would want this rather than skipping) up to the podium. Or imagine more manual use, where your co-watchers are simply putting in mark points -- like the end of an academy awards acceptance speech, so you can just press a button to zip to it. This is bluesky for now, but I expect something like this will happen in the future. Today, however, I will put in one suggestion that I have made before but may bear repetition. Quite often, and almost always on HDTV, commercials are in a different aspect ratio from the regular show, and if you can detect the black bars, you can have very accurate elimination. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Last 2 years it was the TIvo, this year it's HD. At this party, we meet at 3pm and go for a hike while the box records a couple of hours of game. Then we come back, watch the football at high speed and slow down to watch the commercials. You have to totally reverse your normal remote control reflexes! And it's great fun, and in fact last year I had to have a remote display and fill two floors of my house with guests, the party has gotten so popular. Also, the football is perfectly watchable at the high speed, you can follow the game, slow down for interesting plays and watch last year's clutch finish in real time if you timed it perfectly. Those who don't want to even see the football game compressed into 30 minutes can socialize elsewhere in the house. This year the two floors will have independent control of the stream, which may be a good thing or may be a bad thing. The living room will run off my frontend box, and the backend, which doesn't usually display TV, will temporarily run a frontend as well. No easy way to have the two floors in sync with HDTV unless I had an ATSC transmitter or something like that. Retransmitting the remote seems way too risky. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] New MythTV System help
To all the experts out there. My goal is to have a PVR to record OTA ATSC/NTSC and Firewire from a Cable STB. Would like ability to record 2/watch 1 w/pause-rewind etc. (mostly ATSC) with plans to have enough disk space to save things until BlueRay/? is available for archive. I had not done enough research, when I started, and planned to do it all with XP and MCE 2005 w/ATI tuners. Well, that's not going to happen so I've spent the last month reading forums, looking for software to do it. I looked a SAGE, the MDP-120/130 software etc. The only thing I've found that even has a chance of doing all of this is "MythTV". I have limited experience with Linux so that concerns me, a little, but my main concern is: will my system support the (software encode/decode)of 2ea HD-3000s and a PVR-250/350. Is there any chance the MDP-120/130s, with hardware encode/decode, are supported by MythTV? Also, does MythTV support Firewire? Do I have a better choice of tuners? [mythtv-users] Air2pc / Air2LAN
Guess I've been behind on the Jan threads, but was surprised to learn about the air2pc option. This looks interesting, and I see from the archives some people are starting to experiment. Checking out their web site tho, I find the Air2LAN device perhaps even more interesting. According to the spec sheet, there is a Linux library available. Depending on specifics and costs, etc; I see more potential in this approach. You could have several of these, connected to a gigabit lan (the individual device is limited to 100), writing to a Lan Storage device (PC or dedicated), and a small frontend . Most of the devices are stuffed out of the way (basement, office), a small frontend, and the network. The network really becomes most of the system; with very few parts required. Depending on the device costs, this could be significantly easier and cheaper than PCI based cards. Does anyone have more info on if this approach would be viable? [mythtv-users] Programme aspect ratio data
Hi all, The uk_rt listings grabber has aspect ratio information for most of the programs now: BBC News; Weather News and Current Affairs 16:9 The mark-up is only present for 16:9 (it seems). 4:3 broadcast programming just skips it completely. Anyone working on adding (automatic) support for this to mythtv ? Just a 'wish list' item, as pressing 'W' on playback isn't exactly hard, but it would be useful for nuvexport too. I have tried fiddling with ivtvctl to embed wss/cc/vps into the captured mpeg stream. However, Myth's X11 playback, and mplayer's nuv playback do not seem to honour the wss setting. RE: [mythtv-users] Bootsplash theme for MythTV?
Well, I'm running KnoppMyth on the box I did this for, so YMMV.. Assuming you have bootsplash already set up, and are using lilo, just copy the GANT directory from the zip file to your bootsplash/themes directory, then edit lilo.conf and change vga=xxx to vga=788 (this theme uses 800x600). Back up your initrd, then run splash -s -f /path/to/your/themes/GANT/config/bootsplash-800x600.cfg > /boot/initrd Run lilo -v and reboot. Of course for the wallpaper, just replace your existing wallpaper. -Scott > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of MadPatrick > Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2005 12:50 PM > To: 'Discussion about mythtv' > Subject: RE: [mythtv-users] Bootsplash theme for MythTV? > > Have you al small howto on installing this nice them . > > Thanks > > > Patrick > > > -Oorspronkelijk bericht- > > Van: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Namens Scott Rowe > > Verzonden: zondag 30 januari 2005 19:10 > > Aan: 'aaron'; 'Discussion about mythtv'; 'David Collett' > > Onderwerp: RE: [mythtv-users] Bootsplash theme for MythTV? > > > > I created a bootsplash based on the GANT theme, as well as a > > background for X.. I've been fooling around with mepis and have been impressed with the smooth, quick installs; it seems like the quickest and easiest path to a relatively up to date Debian install. I have twice done apt-get --install-deps mythtv and built from CVS with no problems. Current downside for me is a broken nVidia driver for the 2.6.10 Kernel and no lirc. Hi again. I just thought I should update you on my progress. I wouldn't want somebody searching the list archives to make the same mistake as me ... So, I went and bought the Nova-Ts. Its just a shame that they seem to be completely incompatible with my motherboard! I don't have to worry about which driver I use. They don't even appear when I do an lspci! I've tried just about everything I can think of - different bios settings, different PCI slots, removing all other cards, trying one at a time etc. Has anybody else had similar experiences? Perhaps Scan will agree to exchange them for two of the other freeview cards they do. What's really annoying is I also bought some new ECC RAM, ide controller and some cooling. Most of this will be completely useless if I have to buy a new motherboard :( Ideas, (or just general sympathy) welcome. I had a little play with mythTV over the weekend and was very impressed. Great work guys! I was using an old Hauppaggue frame grabber and no soundcard, but it did suffice as proof of concept. I'm now ready to take the plunge and invest in some proper hardware. I've got a base PC which I think will be good enough and I plan to get a secondhand xbox to use as a frontend. Here's the spec of what I've got... Gigabyte GA-6BXD MB Dual Pentium III 800Mhz 352MB 100Mhz SDRAM 250GB PATA HD (Western Digital) 30GB PATA HD with Debian Sarge installed. nVidia MX200 (but I guess this isn't relevant for a backend only system) Living in the UK, 2 DVB cards seem to be the way forward. Am I right in thinking that they all produce MPEG2 streams so no encoding has to be done in software? I've come up with a 3 card shortlist all available from www.scan.co.uk (where I'll be placing an order for some unrelated stuff later this week.) They are ... Avermedia DVB-T PCI Card £64.44 Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T Freeview receiver PCI (909) £62.06 Vision + PCI TV Tuner - HDTV Compatible + Remote £46.06 Do all these cards definately have suitable drivers? I think I read somewhere that not all Nova-T's were the same. I wouldn't want to end up with an unsupported variant. Or should I just go for the cheapest? Shouldn't the outputted MPEG2 stream be identical for each card? The option to receive some of the top-up-tv channels might be good too. Has anybody got this working yet? I'm hoping that the system will be capable of recording two programmes, whilst simultaneously letting me watch a previously recorded show on the xbox. I don't suppose I'll want to do this that often but it would be nice. Since my MB only supports UDMA-2, I'm also thinking of buying an addon PCI ATA card. I'm guessing I won't need any soundcards in a DVB only system? Wow, what a lot of questions! I really hope that somebody can help me out with some of these. Thanks! [mythtv-users] CVS compile errors on Suse 9.2
I have been watching the rapid development of DVB in MythTV and decided to give the latest CVS a try but ran into a brick wall when I tried to compile it with DVB support. I get a series of syntax errors from /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24/include/asm/byteorder.h when compiling mythcdrom-linux.cpp (see below) and have no idea why. Now, I have a history of falling out with Suse over some of the silly games they occasionally play with kernel sources and wondered if this was another of those occasions or did I do something silly? I should note the installed kernel sources are as shipped, nothing has been touched. I also changed the architecture in settings.pro as below (Athlon XP). Re: [mythtv-users] Commercial Flagging Problem
Chris Pinkham wrote: It is definitely an art not a science, and to make matters worse, every capture card is different when capturing analogue TV. So, for instance on one user's card #1 a black/blank screen is all values 0-10 but on another card in the same computer, it could be 60-70. I tried to code around some things like this in current CVS, but there are still going to be some differences that I'm not accounting for. This is one reason you could have 2 people recording the same show and it works great for one person but not-so-great for the other person. Add to that the fact that like you say the people making the content and stations don't want us skipping commercials and it makes it practically impossible to get it working perfectly. One of the things that I noticed that started breaking commercial flagging using the blank-frame code in 0.16 was the fact that CBS started putting their logo up during the blank frames. Since the old code didn't know about the logo, it would detect the frame as being non-blank and it would realy mess up the commercial detection. In current CVS, I try to work around that and it seems to be doing much better. There is also a new "ALL" method which tries to use all available info from the recording to find commercials. The ALL method is extensible so I'll be adding more things to it in the future to help better detect commercials and eliminate false positives. I've got code started in my source tree to try using aspect ratio changes to help detect when commercials start and stop. There are also a few other detection ideas on my TODO to add that will help the ALL method be more accurate. Just a point here. I've been using the new All method in CVS for a few weeks now and I've found that shows that previously detected horribly (Enterprise, West Wing) are now detecting as flawlessly as other shows that have worked for a long time. This feature is a definite improvement here in detection. Kevin ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] Volume setting has no effect (PVR-350)
I'm _this_ close to having completed my system. Remote et al are now perfectly setup, but one (tiny) problem remains. When in MythTV watching live TV, changing the volume does nothing. Absolutely nothing. I'm using the S-Video out from my Hauppauge PVR-350 and sound is crystal clear. To be precise I use a common white and red wire from the 350 to the TV for sound. No external amplifier, digital audio or loop-back between the 350 and the computer's sound card. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Seems as if I might have made a boo-boo in the configuration of the capture card perhaps? My current setting in "mythtv-setup" for the PVR-350 is "Audio device: /dev/dsp" but I'm pretty sure this only applies for sound in, right? "/var/log/messages" shows no errors and I have gone through the how-to's plenty of times to make sure I only have the correct msp3400 etc. I mean, the sound is there I just can't control it. Someone? Anyone? Pointers are welcome... Thanks! Kindly, Didde___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Hello, Thanks to everyone's great advice, I was able to get it working. Using the advice of aiming the device into my digital camera I was able to see that it was working. I tried varying the distace from the unit but to no avail. Lastly I tried the only other Scientific Atlanta Lirc config I could find, the one for the 8000 model (SAE8000), and this was the one that finally worked for me. Thanks to everyone who helped me out and a big thanks to Andy for making up that page, it made the setup process (if you have the right config) fast and flawless.
