Actually, this would be a nice feature, but I'm not
willing to code it, so I can live without.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: There are
some people (myself included) who happen to use the
LiveTV feature. Or, alternatively, I'll start
recording a show, but them in skipping commercials, I
catch up with the live feed.

Can't skip commercials to get to content that hasn't
aired yet.

Just wanted to follow this up. Vendor was extremely easy to work with,
very knowlegable (you'll see why if you order one) and shipped one out
the door quickyl.

. Rev1 cards have a different "frontend" (Broadcom 3510) which has
only been supported in the last 7-ish days. Once you get it compiled
into the kernel, everything gets happy.

Worth the money, imho.

One Caveat, if you have signal strength problems now, you may not want
to get one of these... they are a little weaker on the RCV side than
the Gen2 cards.

See - I use MythTv as a TV as well. Unfortunately Myth can not
retroactively record a channel. So when you flip to a channel and - hey
there is a good movie - then there is no 5 minutes to fast forward. So
when the commercials come on with their +15% volume then it would be
nice to tone them that far down that you can barely hear them.
NOT MUTE.
Why would I watch the screen, when I can go making coffee, find the book
for later whatever. I do have ears too and they will tell me when the
commercial segment is over. I realize I could pause and then come back
after 30 mins, but what would I do for 30 mins? I mean except for
reading and answering emails?
Watching TV has a social function as well when you are married. OOh -
thats what I could use the 30 mins for - hmm.
Anyway - I still think a preset volume - back to normal volume would be
a nice thing.

2005-05-25 Thread Michael T. Dean

Ben Bargabus wrote:

Also--and probably more importantly--you lose much of the benefit of DVD.

This relates to another question I have. With a DTV receiver connected to the
backend is the output decoded by the receiver, encoded by the PVR-250, sent
across the network, and decoded by the PVR-350 in the frontend?

Basically, yes. However, any machine with a PVR-350 should be used as a
frontent/backend combo (since it has a tuner card and TV out). However,
with your stated goal of keeping all the satellite receivers in one
server room connected to dedicated backends, it doesn't make sense for
you to use PVR-350's. Buy PVR-250's (or PVR-150/PVR-500's once you get
comfortable with IvyTV--since they're newer and not as well supported at
this time) and get a good video card. That way, you get OpenGL support
for good Goom. (One of the visualizations in MythMusic--and, with my
pitiful collection of music, the only reason to use MythMusic. :)

Is this the only solution if the receiver is connected at the backend
(obviously the specific hardware could change but I'm talking about the decode,
encode, decode sequence)?

Yes. (Unless your receiver does digital output via firewire, then
there's only one decode.)

I'm well versed in computers but not very well in video so please excuse my
ignorance for a moment, is this because the output from the receiver is analog?

Yes.

(if it were digital it seems that it would be much easier to just divvy it up
into packets and send it on its way)

Yes. But TV has been analog since it's inception, so most standard
definition receivers output in analog. Now that we're moving to digital
TV (at least here in the US), the MPAA doesn't want you to be able to do
this, so we now have things like the broadcast flag, HDCP, HDMI, CPRM,
and D-VHS to stop all of us thieves (except, of course, the
insiders--like the one who released Star Wars, Episode 3, The Revenge of
the Sith onto the internet 6 hours before it opened in theaters ;).
With some receivers, you can pull a digital signal (generally MPEG-2
video) via firewire, but that's a whole different question...

Even if analog why not just a good ADC on one end and DAC on the other? Is
this a bandwidth/storage-capacity issue (and thus really relying on the
compression of MPEG)?

Yes. MPEG-2 compression allows the recording of TV at pretty good
quality at about 1.25GiB/hr (3 Mb/sec) including audio. However, many
people use higher bitrates for "better" quality, but DVD--which also
uses MPEG-2--maxes out at about 4.25GiB/hr (10.08Mb/sec according to the
spec) including video, audio, and subtitles). MPEG-4 can--in
theory--give the same quality as MPEG-2 with half the bitrate. Assuming
a 16-bit/pixel uncompressed format (like YUV or YUV2) at 720x480, a
one-hour recording will take about 70GiB/hr (166 Mb/sec) and a
24-bit/pixel format (like RGB24) would take about 105GiB/hr (~250Mb/sec)
not including audio. (I.e (720 * 480) pixels/frame * 30 frames/sec * X
bits/pixel = bitrate ) Now that's compression...

Note that:
1 GiB = 1024MiB = 1048576 KiB = 1073741824 bytes
(see http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html )
1Mb = 1000 Kb = 100 bits

Therefore, you will lose quality--even if you can't do progressive display with
your TV.

Is this noticeable? highly noticeable? Does this manifest as pixelation or
artifacts etc...

Interlacing artifacts usually include the "jaggies". Pixelation (or
blockiness) happens when recording with too high a resolution for a
given bitrate on a given scene. I'd say you'll notice more of a quality
loss from the decode-encode-decode cycle (which can, in fact, cause
blockiness--even with a sufficient bitrate--through the amplification of
the quality loss in the original MPEG encoding) than from the loss of
progressive output. However, it's quite possible that even the
decode-encode-decode cycle won't make a noticeable difference. The best
way to decide is to see it yourself (and try not to let your
preconceptions cloud your perspective).

And, finally, there's the annoyance factor... Since Myth would treat the DVD playback as just
another "LiveTV" channel, it would buffer it (to allow you to pause, rewind, etc.).
Therefore, there would be a couple of seconds of delay between the time you pushed a button on your
DVD remote until it "took" (i.e. when navigating DVD menus).

Does this also apply to changing channels on "live" TV? For example, I change
the channel on my DTV receiver connected to the backend of my system, do I now wait
several seconds for the content to appear? That seems like an unacceptable delay, if I
were surfing through channels and each press of the channel changer took several seconds
to respond.

Yes. However, not many people who use MythTV watch LiveTV. (I'm Mike
Dean and I haven't surfed channels in 15 months! Hi, Mike!) Those who
do watch LiveTV get used to changing cha

[mythtv-users] Finishing my Myth Configuration

2005-05-25 Thread Tim Vruwink

Greetings:

I've been running MythTV 0.18 for about a week now and am extremely
pleased with it. This is my first time using it, and I successfully got
everything running on my first try (with a few restarts). I have a few
niggling details I want to nail down before I consider this project
ready for primetime.

My box is running Myth .18 frontend and backend. It's a FC3 box with a
single Hauppauge 250 tuner card, an Nvidia 5200 video card (s-video out)
and an Asus NF2 motherboard - using the onboard soundcard. I am using a
irman with a Radioshack 8 in 1 remote. I used Jarods guide and the
mailing list for instructions on how to get everything running.

1. The down and CH- buttons on my remote are not working - all other
buttons work great. I set up the remote using irrecord and the lircrc
file from Jarods site. Do I need to rerun irrecord again? I played
around with IRW and confirmed that those keys are not responding. What
steps do I need to take to get those two buttons working?

2. Mythbackend isn't autostarting. I've been simply lauching it from
the console with a "mythbackend &" command, but I'd like to get it
automated.

3. Whenever I reboot, I loose /dev/video0 and am forced to run "modprobe
ivtv" to reload my tuner device. Is this the correct behaviour? Where
do I set this to run automatically?

4. I have my Mythtv box set to autologin. However, under FC3 for some
reason the default X session is "failsafe". How do I get it to use KDE?
Would changing /etc/sysconfig/desktop from desktop=gnome to desktop=kde
work?

Thanks for any help getting these last remaining issues sorted out.

+Tim

Re: [mythtv-users] OS X -Mac Mythfrontend can't find backend, won't give me the setup screen

2005-05-25 Thread Evan Burrows
I had a similar issue. I also tried the osx packager script but it
always resulted in a make error. Assuming that everything was placed
in the default locations when you installed the myth osx frontend go
to a terminal and go into you home directory. Then cd into .mythtv
directory. You should see a file called mysql.txt, you can change the
backend IP in that file then retry starting the frontend. After making
sure my backend was looking accepted incoming connections and the
backend IPs were the same I restarted the osx frontend and everything
was fine. Hopefully that is what you are looking for.

Good luck

I already tried that patch. 2.6.11.8 onwards already have this patch.
The system doesn't freeze on loading the bttv module anymore. However,
when I tried to watch with my Twinhan cards, the video jumped, audio is
broken up. Recording shows also produce the same result.

I tried recompiling mythtv, tried both TS/PS modes and still got the

with Twinhan cards and have no problems watching TV with Mythtv?

I've yet to try another DVB app to see if the problem lies with the
kernel or myth itself, do you have another DVB app to recommend? MythTV
is the only app I am using ATM. I used to be able to use dvbstream and
pipe it to mplayer, but I can't seem to do it anymore.

Not a huge issue for me since I can always fallback to 2.6.10. But I
would like to move on to a newer kernel if possibe. Thanks for helping
me out. :p

LOL. There are actually three (somewhat tongue-in-cheek), and I
accidentally combined the second and third in my statement:

1. Cable quality doesn't matter when the data flowing over it is digital.

2. Never buy anything from Monster because it's really overpriced.

3. All audiophile features (e.g., "oxygen free", "magnetically aligned",
etc.) are snake oil.

I've been seeing the same symptoms here on a Gentoo box (on restart,
mythbackend isn't starting up), the problem I've found is that
*something* is resetting the ownership of the mysql /var/run/mysqld
directory to root:mysql, instead of mysql:mysql . As a result, mysqld
doesn't start (but the init.d script doesn't notice this), and then
mythbackend doesn't start because it can't connect to the database
server (but again, the init.d script doesn't notice).

To see if this is the problem, check first to see if mysqld is running:
ps -A -f | grep mythbackend
ps -A -f | grep mysql
If you don't see a half-dozen of both mythbackend and mysqld showing up,
then you may have the same problem.

To get around it, I reset the ownership of the directory to be mysql:mysql:
chown mysql:mysql /var/run/mysqld
Then do (warning: zap is probably a dangerous and evil thing if the
daemon is actually running!)
/etc/init.d/mysql zap
/etc/init.d/mysql start
/etc/init.d/mythbackend zap
/etc/init.d/mythbackend start
No idea how to *fix* the problem, or even if the mysql:mysql ownership
is "correct" (though it does seem to *work*), but hopefully this helps
the original poster somewhat.

Good luck,
Mike

Lower gauge wires (thicker) offer less resistence. This will lower the
load on your amplifier. This allows for less distorted music and less
chance for clipping. For longer wire runs, you want lower gauge to
offset the increased resistence from the increased length. The premium
you pay for Monster is too much. Plenty of good quality manufactures
for much less money. I usually look for oxygen free copper wires. 14
gauge is probably sufficient for most uses. If you have long runs or
high end equipment, you might want 12 or 10.

I would avoid Best Buy. They're big enough, they typically get custom
models. I have seen some of the tvs they sell missing features that the
same tv at another store has. Yet the price is nearly the same. They
also play tricks with the model numbers to advertise that they will beat
the price of any competitor (oddly, no one else carries the same model
number). Just as an example, I purchased the high end model of my tv
from a small local chain for $400 less than Best Buy wanted for their
crippled version of the low end model of the same tv.

You probably don't have all the development libraries that you
need. Here's what I did:

Run 'apt-get showsrc mythtv-frontend', and install the packages in
the Build-deps list, except libxinerama-dev, and don't worry about the
version of x-libs-static. Make sure that you have gcc-3.2 and g++-3.2
installed and make sure that /usr/bin/gcc and /usr/bin/g++ point to
these binaries. You may need to add some stuff to your
/etc/apt/sources.list. Here's mine.

Mark,

I have a Xebian + blackbox + MythTV CVS frontend and I also have
trouble acknowledging the backend restart dialogs. After an
unsuccessful attempt at tracking down the root cause, I gave up
and implemented a workaround. More inline...

There are probably better ways, but I use irexec bound to an unused
button (on a universal remote) to kill and restart the mythtv process
when necessary. Here is a snippet from my lirc config file:

begin
prog = irexec
button = POWER
repeat = 0
config = (echo "Press again to stop MythTV."; echo "Press a third time to
restart.") | osd_cat --delay 2 --pos top --indent 15 --color orange --shadow 3
--font lucidasanstypewriter-bold-24
config = echo "Stopping MythTV..."| osd_cat --delay 2 --pos top --indent 15
--color orange --shadow 3 --font lucidasanstypewriter-bold-24 ;
/usr/bin/killall -TERM mythfrontend ; /usr/bin/killall -9 mythfrontend
config = /root/startMythfrontend
end

(Apologies for the long, unwrapped lines.)

The osd_cat stuff is fluff. The config below should work too,
assuming lirc doesn't mind the redirects. I have not tested it
myself.

begin
prog = irexec
button = POWER
repeat = 0
config = /usr/bin/killall -TERM mythfrontend ; /usr/bin/killall -9
mythfrontend
config = nice -n 2 /usr/bin/mythfrontend >> /var/log/myth/mythfrontend.log
2>&1 &
end

>Or is there some way I can restart mythfrontend from the ssh
> terminal on another computer but get it to display on the XBox's TV?

By default SSH redirects X output. You can either:

  export DISPLAY=:0.0

before running the mythfrontend command or use the "-x" option to ssh.

Re: [mythtv-users] Hauppauge WINTV-PVR-500 for $127 shipped on Amazon

2005-05-25 Thread Karsten Jeppesen

others have

only gotten static from it.

Just to throw another one in here:
I just bought a Hauppauge 401 for trying this stuff out and it worked,
but sound wasn't that good. But since I only paid $20 on ebay then.

Anyway...
I found my gogles and started to inspect the PCB and bingo. The layout
person hadn't used correct parameters for clearence. So the sound plug
mounting holes were too close to one of the sound leads.
This will not cause any problems in many cases but quite a number of
these boards must show the same problem as mine. That the sound lead is
short circuited. A small screwdriver solved the problem in 30 secs and
now the card works just fine.
My point is: this is a QA issue. This is something the layout package
should catch if correctly programmed. So this is a probable error
happening on newer boards as well. Again all depending of customer feed
back to Hauppauge.
So if you only got static - look at the connectors: do they work? Any
shorts? Try a composite signal from a VCR. Do you get a signal?
If you can get a signal from one media and not another. That says
something. Same if you have only one audio channel.

Chances are you have a lock file that's preventing your init script
from starting the backend.

David,
In my case the middle green button did not clear this message. Strange.

Can you tell me how to restart the window manager? If I lose
control of the frontend (it's happened a couple of times now) I can
still ssh in from a remote system and kill all the mythfrontend
processes. This brings me to the Xebian desktop but using only the
remote control how do I restart Myth?

Or is there some way I can restart mythfrontend from the ssh
terminal on another computer but get it to display on the XBox's TV?

Thanks much,

[mythtv-users] WHISH-LIST: what I always wanted.

2005-05-25 Thread Karsten Jeppesen

There is a very very important thing missing in MythTV.
At least I have been missing this feature on every single TV I have had:

A volumen-preset-while-the-bloody-commercials-are-running button.

Ever noticed that the sound is turned up 15% while the commercials are on?
I would like a switch button that is programmable so I can press it and
temporarily lower the volumen to X% of what it was before.

When the button is pressed again we resume at the previously used volume.

Re: [mythtv-users] Hauppauge WINTV-PVR-500 for $127 shipped on Amazon

2005-05-25 Thread Rob Bongiovi
I guess I got lucky, but I had almost no problems
getting the PVR-500MCE working. I'm using a Chaintech
7NJL6 Motherboard (which is NVIDIA nForce2 based). I
really got lucky, because I did almost no research on
this before I bought. Two other things that seem to
help:

I can't use the automatic load scripts for
mythbackend. Instead, I load it using Jarod's
~/.kde/Autostart/myth-load.sh just before I load the
frontend (see
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php#auto). I think
this may be some sort of driver loading issue (maybe
the one Jarod mentions in the liirc section here
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php#lirc?) and may
not even be related to the PVR-500MCE, but if I try it
the other way, all I get is static like the others.

And I had to add this to my modprobe.conf file (above
and beyond Jarod's instructions):
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
alias tuner tuner-ivtv

(this was from this thread:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/ivtv/devel/20096?search_string=pvr-500;#20096)

I am a linux novice, so once I get this stuff working,
I stop messing with it.

Hope this helps!

Instead of buying multiple 400 disc DVD changers, why not put that
money into disks and RAID controllers and then rip your DVD's to the
hard drive? If you do that you don't have to worry about trying to
pass through video from your DVD player through Myth to the TV. Just
use MythVideo and all your ripped DVD's are available on demand. You
could always change up what DVD's are available on disk from time to
time and still pop a DVD into the drive on the frontend machine if
it's not currently available.

Of course, that will require a ton of disk space, but it sounds like
you've already got pretty lofty goals for your network so I wouldn't
think a giant LVM volume spanning RAID drives would be that big of a
deal and it would certainly make things easier from a usability
standpoint.

Just my $0.02.

Yes I compiled it from scratch, but only the prerelease version (which I
am still running) and I prepared rpms of it as well. So it can be done :-)

HOWEVER..
It was not a trivial compile.
Search the archives for "Call for testers of release-0-18-fixes branch",
then you will get the whole story.
A number of rpms must be installed to satisfy the build. Use
to search for stuff you cant find.
Most noticable is that the mythtranscode code actually needs stuff from
FC2 (not sure but I think it was the one that did)
Also MythTV needs the .rpmrc to be set up. I never used that before, but
I see why they did it. Some of it should be split up though because it
really belongs in the spec file.

But after all this... then it compiled with no problems.

qmake is part of the qt system. make sure it is nstalled and updated.

Regarding your question about Axel (atrpms):
In my opinion atrpms should be handled with care. If used incorrectly -
it may blow up your system. Some of the stuff that is there is much more
complete than it is from the base/update repositories, and a lot more
bleeding edge. Not unstable - just newer.

So it is possible to paint yourself into a corner revision wise.
My philosophy is: never use yum update while atrpms is active. Only
download what you need.
An example is the Alsa system. If you use yum update the Alsa system
will be useless afterwards. Simply because the FC3 rpms for Alsa are
brainless. So you end up with atrpms Alsa system except for the alsalib
which will remain the old one. DUH - they are not compatible.
So you can get all the neat stuff from atrpms. But do not disconnect
your brain. It does require supervision.
That is why I maintain internal caches of outside repositories. It makes
it faster to wipe the system and get it back up again.

Re: [mythtv-users] Bottom-end MythTv Suggestions

2005-05-25 Thread Craig Betts
It's true that there's only room for one optical and a single IDE no
SATA (There might be SATA on the more expensive one with the ATI
video). The noise issue, I think, is that the quiet mode is off by
default in the BIOS settings, and it really howls, but once I turned
on quiet mode, I can't hear it at all. It didn't take a dremel to get
in my PVR 150, but some forcing was required, and I think I can forget
about putting a second tuner in it. I can't complain about the video
quality, but I've been using VGA out so far while waiting to get back
the TV I left behind with my girlfriend when I moved.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I have some comments and
questions embedded below...

My main goal in looking at MythTV is to create a multimedia network,
emphasis on the network. I'd like all the source to be centralized and
have the thinnest possible clients at each point of media consumption.
Ultimately I'd like to have a master backend and multiple slave backends
in my "media server room" along with six DTV receivers, two 400 disc DVD
changers, and a really healthy RAID box. (at some point I plan on
bringing HDTV into the mix but I'll avoid that end of the discussion for
now as it seems that the technology, on MythTV's end, is not mature
yet) I'd like the settop boxes to be minimal, most likely diskless,
machines that simply request data from the backends and perform whatever
sort of decoding is necessary (via something like the PVR-350). I would
have a DVD-ROM of some sort in each so that if I wanted to watch a DVD
not in the changers I could without walking all the way to the server
room and back but would primarily rely on the backends for all source
media.

I'm fine with the idea of having multiple PVR-250s or even multiple
slave backends.

> Also--and probably more
> importantly--you lose much of the benefit of DVD.

This relates to another question I have. With a DTV receiver connected
to the backend is the output decoded by the receiver, encoded by the
PVR-250, sent across the network, and decoded by the PVR-350 in the
frontend? Is this the only solution if the receiver is connected at the
backend (obviously the specific hardware could change but I'm talking
about the decode, encode, decode sequence)? I'm well versed in
computers but not very well in video so please excuse my ignorance for a
moment, is this because the output from the receiver is analog? (if it
were digital it seems that it would be much easier to just divvy it up
into packets and send it on its way) Even if analog why not just a good
ADC on one end and DAC on the other? Is this a
bandwidth/storage-capacity issue (and thus really relying on the
compression of MPEG)?

> Therefore, you will lose
> quality--even if you can't do progressive display with your TV.

Is this noticeable? highly noticeable? Does this manifest as
pixelation or artifacts etc...

Does this also apply to changing channels on "live" TV? For example, I
change the channel on my DTV receiver connected to the backend of my
system, do I now wait several seconds for the content to appear? That
seems like an unacceptable delay, if I were surfing through channels and
each press of the channel changer took several seconds to respond.

> (Note that Myth has
> no provisions for piping data directly to TV without a buffer, and there

Is this open source? What language is it written in? If I get
energetic enough I may fix that. (I'm a programmer)

Thank you for your response, I look forward to your further feedback,
Ben.

I just set up a recording schedule for a UPN show. We have DirecTV and
cable channels 3 and 20 both UPN. If I set the program to record "at
anytime on this channel" it sets it to record on BOTH channels 3 and 20.

That's good. It recognizes that they're the same channel, but with
different channel numbers on different inputs.

If I cancel one of the duplicate recordings (for instance channel 3)
it cancels the recording on 20 as well.

Once again because they're the same channel.

So, why is it trying to record both of them?

I think that's jumping to a conclusion. It will only record once
from one of the channels or the other and the Upcoming Recordings
page will show which channel and card it is assigned to. However,
in the EPG and any program listings pages it should be marked as
Will Record for that showing on that station for each channel that
carries that station.

IOW, the show may be assigned to "3 UPN" in the Upcoming Recordings
but the EPG will show that the episode Will Record for each of "3 UPN"
and "20 UPN" or the Search Lists->Channels for "3 UPN" and the list
for "20 UPN", etc.

If the under-lying question is how to make the scheduler perfer 20
over 3 or 3 over 20, way too much information can be found here:

This is actually quite easy to accomplish. On the shutdown options
screen in mythtv-setup you can define a Pre Shutdown check-command.
Just create a script that checks if mythcommflag is running, and if so
let the script exit with exit status 1. Otherwise exit with exit
status 0. The script below is one way to do it.

-8<--
#!/bin/sh
ps a | grep -v grep | grep -q mythcommflag && exit 1
exit 0

-8<--

This is a reply to a message from here from 2 months ago. I actually
am running right now off of batteries and the power meter on my inverter
is reading 120 to 130 watts running the computer (with 3 disk drives,
a GPU, an Athlon 3000 not doing much and a few other minor peripherals.)

My power's out because a car smashed into the power pole in front of
my house!!!

Thus it got me to get around and measuring it as you challenged. My
feelings about the power usage were correct, and I don't think it's
unusual for desktop systems like mine, nor do I think you must be wrong
about your rack mount server, which is probably designed for better
power efficiency.

[mythtv-users] OS X -Mac Mythfrontend can't find backend, won't give me the setup screen

2005-05-25 Thread Kent Ypma
Okay - I'm new to OS X, so bear with me. The prebuilt mythfrontend
was working well for me until I made the mistake of changing IP
addresses for the backend server. Now when I click on the icon it
just hangs. When I run the app from a command line I get an error
that it can't find the database - but it's looking at the wrong IP
Address. So, I reinstalled, tried different versions, nothing got me
back to the setup screen. After searching the archives I created a
new user and after logging in and clicking on the mythtv icon, I got
the setup screen and was able to give it the proper ip address for the
backend and everything works beautifully. Unfortunately, my initial
user account isn't fixed.
So here is my best guess:
The ip information is being kept in some user dependent file outside
of the mythtv package and if I could find that file I could just
manually give it the right IP Address. Can anyone give me a kick in
the right direction on this?

TIA,
Kent

Milos,
I brought up a PVR-150 on Saturday on a gentoo box. I was using a
pretty new gentoo-source 2.6.11 kernel. I could NOT get it working
with Gentoo's ivtv-0.2 driver (~x86) so I used the 0.3.3k driver from
the ivtv site. That worked fine.

I added this to the /etc/modules.d/ivtv file:

gandalf ~ # cat /etc/modules.d/ivtv
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv

options cx25840 no_black_magic=1
options ivtv ivtv_std=0 tuner=50 tda9887=0 ivtv_debug=1
options cx25840 i2c_enable=1
options saa7127 i2c_enable=-1
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe tuner; /sbin/modprobe msp3400;
/sbin/modprobe saa7115; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv
remove ivtv /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove ivtv && /sbin/modprobe
-r saa7115 && /sbin/modprobe -r msp3400 && /sbin/modprobe -r tuner

#options ivtv ivtv-debug=0 mpg_buffers=90
#options tuner type=2
#options msp3400 once=1 simple=1 debug=0
#add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner
#add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c
gandalf ~ #

The TV tuner is working fine. In fact, it's sort fo strange but it
appears that the PVR-150 is actually dual tuner! Both tuner 0 and
tuner 1 seem to work although I did not try recording from tuner 1.

I was unable to get the S-Video or composite video inputs to work yet.

I installed a new, external 300GB 1394 hard drive to act as video
storage. It seemed to be working fine as of this mornig when I left.
I'm sure I'll hear from my 75+ year old Linux using parents if it
fails!

Cheers,
Mark

Hope this helps,
Mark

Have you set Myth to use the Master channel for the mixer? If not,

If you change the recording group in Watch Recordings (using the menu

I admit I've been lazy and haven't looked into it because it's just

I use a PVR-150 non-MCE with supplied remote. Works well with CVS drivers,
something like 3.4t or around there. Had no luck with the 0.2 stable
drivers. Note that you need lirc-0.7.1 or later for the IR to work. The
remote supplied with PVR150 is "new" so I couldn't find lircrc and
lircd.conf files for it, so I've made my own. Email me (address in sig.)
if you want my files. They're not really optimised but it's a start :-)

Yes. The system is more or less isolated so I haven't bothered setting up

anyways, since it's all root the .xmltv dir isn't the problem.

it sets it to record on BOTH channels 3 and 20.

That's good. It recognizes that they're the same channel, but with
different channel numbers on different inputs.

If I cancel one of the duplicate recordings (for instance channel 3) it cancels
the recording on 20 as well.

Once again because they're the same channel.

So, why is it trying to record both of them? It sounds like the
duplicate check method is set to "None", so it records
everything--whether it's already been recorded or not.

Re: [mythtv-users] High level system architecture questions

2005-05-25 Thread Michael T. Dean

Ben Bargabus wrote:

Hello again,
So as I'm planning my hardware purchases for my first system I have some
questions about how this system is intended to be used, best used, and
most commonly used (maybe all three are the same but most likely not).
The vision I have in my head based off of the reading I've done on this
list and in HOWTOs goes something like this...

dss receiver dvd changer
   |/
   | /
   | /
   | /
   |/
   | /
   | /
MythTV Backend
 |
 |
 |
  Network
 |
 |
MythTV Frontend
 |
 |
TV

Using that system I imagine myself sitting in front of my television and
making requests to the mythtv frontend (via my remote control) that
access information on the mythtv backend. In some cases this would be
prerecorded content but may also be live broadcast from my DirectTV
receiver or a movie from my dvd changer (I'd have a connection to the
low speed data port on each of these from the mythTV backend to control
them). Is this possible, intended, common, best? A second viable
option I can imagine is something like this...

dss receiver#1 dvd changer
   |/
   | /
   | /
   | /
   |/
   | /
   | /
MythTV Backend
 |
 |
 |
  Networkdss receiver #2
 |/
 | /
MythTV Frontend
 |
 |
TV

In this scenario the first dss receiver would be used solely for
scheduled recording whereas "live" tv viewing would be done via dss
receiver #2 (also contolled via low speed data port). Is this more
realistic/less problematic or unnecessary because my first scenario is
fine?

Right, what you described is basically how it works. In the first
diagram, you have a dedicated backend and a dedicated frontend. In the
second diagram, you have a dedicated backend and a frontend/backend
combo. A third diagram could have a dedicated backend and dedicated
frontend, but you could put both DSS receivers on the single backend
(just put an extra tuner card in the backend). (And, of course, there's
the fourth diagram with a frontend/backend combo with the two DSS
receivers connected directly to it--this is what I'm doing, primarily to
limit the number of computers I have to keep running at all times (I
currently have four with only one of them doing Myth things).)

One note, though, when it comes to your (standalone/set-top) DVD
changer, you probably don't want to hook it into your Myth backend. In
order to integrate it into a Myth system, you'll have to connect it to
an input on a tuner card. Therefore, you would either have to have an
extra tuner card (i.e. one more than the number of satellite receivers
you have) or only watch DVD's when both tuners are not in use (i.e. when
only recording one show or none). Also--and probably more
importantly--you lose much of the benefit of DVD. All (non-high-def)
tuner cards accept NTSC/PAL input. Since NTSC/PAL are interlaced
formats, piping DVD output (which can be progressive--depending on your
DVD and DVD player) through the tuner card would eliminate the potential
for progressive playback (assuming you have a nice-enough TV that
progressive is an option). Also, the MPEG-2 (lossy-format) encoded
video would be decoded by your DVD changer, piped to your tuner card,
encoded by your Myth box into another (lossy) format (i.e. MPEG-2 for a
hardware encoder or RTJPEG or MPEG-4 for a software encoder), then
decoded by your Myth box and output to the TV. Therefore, you will lose
quality--even if you can't do progressive display with your TV. And,
finally, there's the annoyance factor... Since Myth would treat the DVD
playback as just another "LiveTV" channel, it would buffer it (to allow
you to pause, rewind, etc.). Therefore, there would be a couple of
seconds of delay between the time you pushed a button on your DVD remote
until it "took" (i.e. when navigating DVD menus). (Note that Myth has
no provisions for piping data directly to TV without a buffer, and there
are no plans to add this functionality.)

Therefore, your best bet for DVD's is to a) get a DVD-ROM or DVD writer
for your Myth frontend and let it play the DVD's (this is the approach
I'm using, and I think the output quality--especially when using
post-processing--rivals, or possibly surpasses, that of even high-end
DVD players) or b) connect the DVD-changer directly to the TV and use it
for direct playback (meaning you'll need a slew of remotes to work the
system and you have all the input-switching rules you have to teach
people when they come over.

Unless they've changed things since I worked there, no. They get hammered by

there's no incentive for them to load people up, there's a strong disincentive

I'm running Knoppmyth, so I think I've got X 4.3.0, not xorg. FWIW,
I'll attach my config anyway. It's a lightly modified version of the
Hauppauge sample config that comes with Knoppmyth.

Depending on your distro, there may be a special section to enter it
in the config file. Otherwise, I think you can just add it on to the
end of your "kernel" line in grub.conf, like:

  kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.9-21 root=/dev/hda1 video=vc:64-64

Good luck!

At various times, I sold computers and cell phones, so at least I didn't have
any Monster snake-oil to push. The video & audio guys had that task, though,
as well as a manager who had chugged the Monster Kool-Aid.

Re: [mythtv-users] VCR video to MythTV (USB, 1394 or S-Video capture solutions)

2005-05-25 Thread Mark Knecht
Hi,
This is indeed probably the simplest solution I've heard of yet. I
had to leave my parents place and travel home. We did not manage to
get any of the S-video/composite video solutions working before I
left. This is one my dad can probably handle on his own.

The only downside I can think of is it requires the power on the
VCR to be in the off position or the turner used will be the VCR's and
not the PVR-150's. If someone copies a tape and then forgets to turn
the power off programs will be missed. I think that's a very managable
risk.

   Thanks for the simple idea.

Cheers,
Mark

Re: [mythtv-users] Can't mute, can't change 6cg AC3 volume, audio volume shift on play

2005-05-25 Thread Sasha Z
I don't have a receiver, just "dumb" speakers plugged in to my nf2's
output... I don't want any pass through. I also stopped using my TV
for speakers because I wanted 5.1 audio for my movie collection, and a
real bass for music.

So it seems that I can boil it down to two questions:

1) Why can't I ever get no output?
2) How do I turn off pass through?

So I think that means the card is working. But when I try to add a
new card in mythtv-setup I select card type = DVB, and I get:
DVB Card number: 0
Card Name: Could not get card info for card #0!
Card Type: Invalid argument

If I select card 1, then back to 0, I get:
DVB Card number: 0
Card Name: Could not get card info for card #0!
Card Type: Success

Also, I've got a PVR-350 in the box. Finally, in /dev, I have:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 212, 7 May 22 19:22 /dev/dvb0.net0

Which I manually linked to:

/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
/dev/dvb0.demux0

I'm using a PVR-500MCE, along with two PVR-250s, one of these is an
MCE also. All of these I picked up on ebay. At first, I did have
troubles which appeared to be related to IRQ sharing. My box is a Dell
GX260, P4 1.8 Ghz. After switching slots a few times, and upgrading
the BIOS (A03->A09, quite a jump), everything works together
perfectly.
Unfortunately, due to frustration and stupidity on my part, I was not
very methodical in my testing, so I'm not sure if I finally found the
correct IRQ settings, the correct PCI slots, or if the fix was simply
due to the BIOS upgrade.

[mythtv-users] Can Myth postpone auto-shutdown til commercial flagging is done?

2005-05-25 Thread Lane Schwartz
My main Myth system is a combo frontend/backend. I don't like leaving
it on all the time.

It's set up to shut down when not in use, and wake up in time for the
next recording using nvram-wakeup. It will auto-shutdown after 5
minutes if the frontend is off and it's not recording anything (and no
recording is about to start). This works fine.

But I'd like to set things up so that commercial flagging is
considered "activity" for purposes of auto-shutdown.

That way, Myth can turn itself on, record something (then flag the
commercials), turn itself off, and when I turn it on the next day to
watch the show, I can load up the commercial cutlist. As it is now,
it's quite likely that newly recorded shows aren't flagged, even
though there were many hours or even days between the recording time
and the viewing of the show.

I suspect that adding this option would require some coding, but I
thought I'd check to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Thanks,
Lane

Progress so far:

 1. Fedora Core 3 installed on a new AMD64 machine.
 2. MythTV downloaded from CVS, as of today (25 May).
 3. Successful compile, mythtv-setup runs thru General just fine.

Next step, installing the drivers for a PVR-350 card.

Would anyone care to offer places to look for a set of steps that would help
me compile, build, and install ivtv ?

I've been looking for Blogs, Howto's, mailing-list messages, where someone
might have listed the steps necessary for compiling ivtv from source and
getting all the other pieces put together.

Right now, it looks like a much larger task than all the preceding steps
combined. For example, it appears that the kernel source must be installed
just so ivtv will compile.

Eventually, assuming I can get ivtv installed by compiling from source, I
will document the process, so anyone else who goes the AMD64 route can have
something to refer to.

Thanks for any pointers, advice, or uproarious laughter you might have.

[mythtv-users] DVB channel confusion

2005-05-25 Thread Andrew Gallatin

At least for US users, channel numbering for DVB boards is pretty
confusing. I was hoping for some info on what the current
"best practice" is for setting up DVB channels.

When you do a channel scan, mythtv picks up a channel number from the
DVB broadcast. For example, in my area, fox HDTV is "501". However,
the datadirect number for fox is "50_1".

What I did when I set my box up 3 months ago was to first do a channel
scan, and then run mythfilldatabse. This resulted in duplicate
entries for every channel. One with data-direct, and one with DVB
numbering. I then went into mysql and manually copied the xmltvid from
the "datadirect" channel to the "dvb" channel, and deleted the
datadirect channels.I also deleted channels picked up in the
scan with marginal reception, since tuning to a marginal DVD channel
is a landmine.

This setup seemed to work well for quite a while, and I was very
happy. But, after a while, my channel information started to get
corrupt. I'd see channels with garbage names in the program guide.
Finally, my recordings were done on the wrong channel. I'd setup a
recording on channel "X", and then it would actually record channel "y"

So, I just wiped my channel/tuner information and re-scanned and
re-filled the database last weekend. Now my recordings seem to be
working again.

However, is there anything I should do differently to keep the
creeping-crud from coming back into my database? I assume these
bogus channels were somehow confusing myth, and bumping its own
channel numbers around (meaning the channel numbers that appear
in the .nuv filenames).

Thanks,

Drew

[mythtv-users] Watching a Video whilst Recording

2005-05-25 Thread Greg Grotsky
I noticed something weird the other day. I was watching a movie that
I was recording at the same time, I was maybe 45min to an hour behind
realtime. I was skipping the commercials, and as the show was
recording it looked very good... I saw the END time of the movie
growing and it looked normal, like an hour and 45 minutes.

Anyway, when the movie ended in realtime and I was still watching it
time-shifted, when I brought up the timescale, it was way off. It
suddenly reported like 7 hours instead of 2. The movie played fine
and ended at the 2 hour mark. When I went back to play it again from
the recordings menu it loaded up and the timescale thingie was now 2
hours.

I just thought it was strange, has anyone else seen this?

[mythtv-users] channel/volume change via scripts ?

2005-05-25 Thread Mudit Wahal
Hi,

Are there any scripts written which will let you change the
channel/volume, change the mode to liveTV, etc etc in the backend
WITHOUT running the frontend ?

An interesting application will be to change live TV channel via web
interface in devices which dont understand myth protocol and where
myth frontend can't be ported. But these devices (such as networked
dvd media players) can read media files and run web clients.

Then watching live TV will be as simple as pointing the file to played
to the live TV cache file and changing channels/volume hooked to the
scripts at the backend via web.

Thanks

Chocolate or Coffe? Well you forgot to tell if it is supposed to be
cold or hot.
You have to look into the setup of your machine. Is it set up with Alsa?
If not then the answer is obvious: You must use the /dev/dsp
If Alsa is supported by your machine, then (sigh) it depends on how
Alsa is set up.
Usually Alsa is set up to support the old OSS. You can see that by
doing a:
lsmod | grep snd_
If you see snd_pcm_oss then Alsa is setup for OSS emulation. In that
case you can still use /dev/dsp
But you also have the choise to use Alsa directly, in which case you
may specify the Alsa device as
ALSA:
Most likely they will NOT react identically as Alsa requires separate
setup.

After LiveTV and Watch Recordings, MythStream is the next most used
part of my MythTV systems. By contrast, I rarely use mythmusic
currently. If I had a card that supported FM radio, I'd probably use
MythV4lRadio more than mythmusic and mythstream combined.

I would like nothing more than to see the streaming and radio code go
into "mythmusic", but to be usable from mythtv, I belive the current
mythmusic frontend really needs to become multiple purpose-focused
frontends.

What I want for streaming media:
- select favorite URL presents (5-10)
- vast selection of "top" stream from shoutcast/live365 sorted by
genre like streamtuner - http://www.nongnu.org/streamtuner/ -
really... if you haven't checked out streamtuner, give it a whirl and
imagine how cool it would be to have mythstream be able to surf most
popular URLs by genre like streamtuner... I'd probably never load
mp3/ogg files onto my mythtv box again
- Like in streamtuner with xmms, I want to see the current songs that
are playing on all stations when a scan is run, and I'd like to see
the upcoming playlist.
- I'd like to have goom/mythmusic visualizations, but I would always
like to have the "station name" and current song visible
- a frequently overlooked fact is that mythstream supports streaming
VIDEO too. Don't know how this could currently be integrated into
mythmusic, but there are times this is useful and cool. MythWeather
would be more useful, if it had links for streaming weather reports
from weather.com , and you can learn some really interesting stuff by
watching NASA TV
- I want to be able to schedule and record streaming content
- I'd like to buffer streaming content and pause/rewind it, and
timestretch it (why not?)

What I want for Radio:
Actually MythFM/MythV4LRadio is pretty good...
- I'd like to see it be part of the mythplugins and have an "autoscan"
option in the interface
- more of an open question - do any tuner cards have radios that
support "radio text"?
- I'd like to be able to schedule and record radio content and have
certain radio stations show up in the program listings -- maybe even
be able to assign them channel numbers

What I want local music file playback:
- easier playlist creation
- auto playlists by artist and genre that can be browsed as virtual playlists

While I can certainly think of how the *CODE* for streaming and radio
could/should go into mythmusic, I think that the user interface for
those functions should be different. I listen to 4 streaming radio
stations all the time, and *if* they were inserted into mythmusic...
where should they be?? maybe at a menu level above music? so...
entering mythmusic, you'd be placed into a menu where you could choose
categories of "music" "radio" "internet stream" ? I would want to have
categories below each of those as well... I just want the menus to be
simple and obvious for quick access to my favorites.

> Well, is a live stream more similar to a TV transmission (with

Just a follow-on note. I've discovered that MythTV has some bugs about
handling the autoexpire number as a non-boolean. Some parts of the program
treat it as an integer, some as a boolean. I'm working on a patch to fix
this up (integer throughout except in the UI). Until such time as that
patch is deployed, I put a special hack into tvwish that it scans for
any suggestions in your recordings which don't have a high autoexpire and
sets it high (unless it's zero, then it stays zero). This will work
fine as long as you are not running super-tight on space.

However, most people should be able to use the program, as modified, just
fine, but should re-download.

Sound seems ok -- now. Alsa in installed. At first none of the mixers
would run (no such device) but I could play mp3s. I reboot fix that.
I also found something I missed in the configuration. I didn't tell it
my card was a PVR350. That seems to help a bit, but

The front end said it was unable to "initialize video" and after I exited
from the mythfrontend. I did see a "IVTV_IOC_GET_FB: Invalid argument"
on the screen.

The only other thing that looked like an error was a complaint about

SW is installed).

So what type of Comsonics tester do you use?

Just curious because I might be interested in trying to rent/borrow one
to test my cabling.

RE: [mythtv-users] IceTV has just announced support for aussie mythtv

2005-05-25 Thread Dean Collins
.And has anyone heard anything more about Foxtel going after the D1
or IceTV guys of the world for copyright of their content?

It seems to me that a Oztivo style solution where individual community
members are entering the data (eg non sue'able') is the way to go on
these matters.

Interesting point, I've just come back from an all day CableLabs
briefing (a more detailed report will be posted this evening) it's
amazing the differences between the USA and Australia in that tv guide
information is public domain and not able to be sued over but that the
method of display on the screen al la Gemstar patent was a major issue
(a figure of $250M was paid by Comcast to make that problem go away).

Cheers,
Dean

That worked for me up until MythTV 0.17. Starting with MythTV 0.18 if
I unticked the "Use GUI size for TV playback" it scaled the video
playback to the dimension of the first screen, 1600x1200, (I'm
guessing here based on the size of the video I'm seeing) even thought
the video's playing on the second screen, 720x480. I ticked "Use GUI
size for TV playback" as a work-around.

It's a little more advanced. It is more of a tablet PC. And I agree,
it would kick some butt if it could be a remote for Myth like the

It should be fixed in the CVS version of myth. The fix just missed 1.18.

Considering the Pundit includes a case and motherboard, it isn't really
any more expensive (unless you don't need a case of course), and is about
as cheap as you can reasonably create a system.

It may not have all the room you'd want for a frontend/backend system
though a lot of people seem to have been happy with it in that
configuration. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is only one IDE channel,
no SATA, so you can only fit one optical and one hard drive in the system
and installing a PVR-150/250/500 may require some time with a dremel to
get it to fit.

There seems to be a lot of variability on people's happiness with the
noise and quality of the video out from reading the list. Am I wrong in my
perception?
