Re: [mythtv-users] LIRC Problem

2006-01-16 Thread Luke
I am not at my MythTV box now but the problem I had was that the make command generated a lot of errors the firsts ones having something to do with missing "../drivers/media/video/bttv.h" and similar files. The command ./configure --with-driver=pixelview_pro succeded without errors. I have two kernel sources installed
i.e

/usr/src/kernels/2.6.11.1_1365_FC4/ and
/usr/src/kernels/2.6.14.1_1656_FC4/
Probably I do not have the correct kernel modules for my chosen driver (PixelView PlayTV Pro - bt878 card). I have no idea how to install those.

[mythtv-users] AIDO - Another Media System

2006-01-16 Thread Daniel Jonasson

A bit of topic but might be interesting for some to
take a look at.

I came across this other home entertainment system
called AIDO
that I haven't seen mentioned on this
list. It still
seems to be under
construction but there are some very
promising screen shots on
their web site that might give some new
ideas to the people
developing Myth, not least the ones that
maintain the themes
since AIDO in my opinion seems to have a
really nice GUI.

Anyway, have a look if you're interested:

What is xvmc?

Is it really a good idea to use the trunk for something that's as
complete as mythtv? (I can understand using the trunk for something
pre-alpha.)

Here are the specs of the computers:

The computer running mythbackend:
Asus K8N-E (nForce4 Ultra)
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ s939
1GB PC3200 (2x512MB)
nVidia GeForce 6600
Using onboard sound
Using onboard ethernet (forcedeth)
Gentoo i686 w/ linux-2.6.15-ck1

My Computer:
Asus K8V-X (Via K8T800)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ s754
1GB PC3200
nVidia GeForce 6800GT 256MB
M-Audio Revolution 7.1
Using onboard ethernet (marvel 88NE8001)
Gentoo i686 w/ linux 2.6.14-ck6

Switch: Dlink DGS-1005D (both connected with Cat5e, speed is around
250-280Mb/s)

Post back if nothing changes for you; include the output of
mythfrontend with XvMC enabled (preferably playing back a HD clip).

I've got an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 1.2Gb ram and it struggles to
play HDTV streams. Video card is a Nvidia FX5200. I was going to make
sure its running the correct modules for the nvidia card, and then see

What CPU, videocard, soundcard and how are all these setup (if
videocard is NVidia, what drivers, and are you using xvmc...). :)

I can tell you that the buttons that light up are dependent on the
device you program it for. I've never tried JP1 with the remote though.

> If you program a disabled button with an EFC, will it
> light up (where previously it wouldn't because it was
> disabled)?

You can only program buttons that already light up. This is still
advantageous as some buttons send the same IR codes (again, the exact
code sent for each button is dependent on what device you program the
remote for).

These limitations aren't really a concern if you have a "universal" IR
receiver. This allows you to program the remote (with this remote it
really means programming each device the remote can control) to a device
which "turns on" all the buttons. Then for any button that sends a
duplicate IR code you can use EFC to make it unique. You can then use
the power of lirc to map each IR code to whatever function you want.

Note: I say universal IR receiver b/c I don't believe any RC5 (or
whatever codeset the Hauppauge cards support) compatible device the
Kameleon supports turns on all the buttons. Thus your IR receiver must
be able to receive whatever codes the Kameleon sends when programmed to
a device that turns on all the buttons.

Hope I've helped more than I've confused!

Cheers
Kev

Mine too. I've got stuff like:

   |config = osd
   |end

This is all from a canned lircrc that is specifically designed for
mythtv on the xbox so I have no reason to suspect it is incorrect.

Yes, and there is also stuff for "vlc" and "xine", neither of
which is running.

Thanks again for your help gentlemen. I'll keep you posted.

I emailed yesterday but messed up the subject line. Hopefully I get it
right this time.

You need to add:
lirc=yes
to your /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

To get mythvideo to start you need to add -nojoystick to your launch
command.

2006-01-16 Thread Chad
XvMC is currently working AFAIK, I've got SVN from about 3 days ago
and it seems to be working just fine for me.

My rig is a XP 2500 with an FX 5200. What kept dragging me down was
the configure script actually recognizing the Nvidia drivers. I tried
with XvMCW, but it rarely worked (probably my fault due to little
understanding of how it works), so I removed the wrapper lib and
ldconfig'd, and finally successfully had the configure script finding
libXvMCNVIDIA as the XvMC lib. From there is was all smooth sailing.

I'm running Gentoo (lastest emerge sync emerge world ~x86), Nvidia's
latest GLX and Kernel modules, and outputting to a 61" Samsung DLP
over a VGA port.

If I can help, I'd be happy to.

Good Luck!

Hopefully getting the Nvidia will do it.

I've got a modest Athlon XP 2500 powering my rig, but the XvMC offset
from my FX 5200 takes the load down to ~45% when playing back a 1080i
stream (720p is somewhere is the 50% range, though I don't know if
that's just what top decided to throw up and there is no difference).
So I would assume a decent P4 (2.4ish) should work just fine.
Something less should work well too, but a 2.4 would give you enough
overhead for realtime comm flagging as well.

Not sure why the above poster had to increase the ring-buffer size,
this has never been something I've had to tamper with to get my HD
working well, but I'm glad no less :)

[mythtv-users] Shouldn't XvMC be faster than Xv?

2006-01-16 Thread Scott Alfter
I've been playing around with Subversion builds lately, and I've noticed
something that shouldn't be the case: XvMC is substantially slower than
non-XvMC playback. Even non-HD video won't play back smoothly with XvMC
enabled. HD, of course, definitely won't play back under those conditions.

Is there some configuration somewhere that I'm missing, or is XvMC currently
broken (again)? I'm currently running the 8629 revision on an Athlon 64
3700 with a Geforce 6200, but I saw the same behavior with the 8444 revision
on the same hardware and on an Athlon XP 3000 with a GeforceFX 5200.

You can change the 'global' compiler option settings in
/etc/make.conf You can change that file, emerge mythtv, and then
change it back (or leave it). I run gentoo also, but am running pretty
much the latest svn... All I did was fetched the latest svn, ran
.configure with some 'key' options (I use: ./configure --enable-xvmc
--enable-opengl-vsync --enable-dvd --enable-dvb --enable-proc-opt), then
qmake mythtv.pro, make, and finally make install. The only difference I
found was that gentoo puts the Mythtv programs in /usr/bin, and making
'directly' from svn puts them in /usr/local/bin

Hello,

After purchasing this card, I've decided that it would
be best for me to capture HD broadcasts over firewire
from our cable set-top box, and use Myth to record
that way. So I'd like to sell my very lightly-used &
functional card for $150 & thought I'd post it here
before posting it on Ebay. It has all documentation
I'll ship it by insured, tracked mail.

If you're interested in this offer, please email me
directly. I will warrant it for 15 days so that you
can make sure it is working for you.

Yeah, its dead.

I run it on debian sarge with my own compile of everything that isn't in
the normal repos. (like ffmpeg and all of that) One thing that I ended
up doing was building my own 2.6.14 kernel package for the HD-3000
drivers rather than trying to build them into the old kernel. (which is
also possible)

http://www.penlug.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/DigitalTelevision

If all your worried about is things like ivytv then I probably wouldn't
bother with going that far. Also all of my frontends run sarge where I
built everything by hand too

If you would check out the latest SVN (and read the
-dev and -commits list like those running SVN should
do), then you'd notice that LiveTV (and the groupings)
work as you have described. There is now a "LiveTV"
group, I don't know if it is user-configurable or not.

The section on setting up lirc shows how to set those things up, and explains a bit about the devices. That particular portion is not distribution-specific to Gentoo.

I've just completed a bare metal install of FC4 x86_64 and noticed some
intermittent yet sustained bursts from the HD while working on the myth
install. A quick look at top showed prelink and make processes banging
away. Just a short time ago the culprit was makewhatis.

[mythtv-users] LiveTV related ideas/comments

2006-01-16 Thread pete
Hopefully this is the right place to post this comment/question - if not,
please let me know.
I just grabbed the latest svn after hanging out with 7738, the last one prior
to livetv/ringbuffer changes. In the time between them, mythtv has seen a lot
of improvements, and it seems pretty stable. That is to say, I have yet to
crash it or find any bugs.Overall I am highly impressed with the
development work that's been done in the past few months. I really like the
way LiveTV now works. The Watch Recordings menu seems a little clunky with
respect to this new LiveTV, however. What do you guys think of having a LiveTV
program group?
Here's how I picture it would work: By default, all LiveTV recordings would
go into a LiveTV( or user configurable ) program group, to keep them together.
You could choose to display that group or not, and you could still choose to
dump them into the "All Programs" filter if you want. As it stands you can
dump them into All Programs or not, and if not they don't show up anywhere,
that I can tell - please correct me if I am missing something. I think it
would be handy to be able to have them show up under one place like a LiveTV
group, so that you have an option to see them all together without having them
interspersed in All Programs or scattered around elsewhere.
Does anyone think this is a worthwhile enhancement? Is it possible already
via some other method that I missed?

Did you turn them on for the recording profiles for the

happens if you queue a job manually through the
Watch Recordings screen?

Increasing 286's priority by 1 did not change the schedule. Increasing
it by 2 resolved the conflict (scheduler chose to record the 2am Jon
Stewart and the 2:30am Colbert on ch. 286 and that resolved the
Letterman conflict).

[mythtv-users] User jobs not in queue

2006-01-16 Thread Kirk Grell
I believe I've setup a user job correctly in
mythsetup, but the job never shows up in the queue
(verified with --verbose jobqueue).

Where do I look next as to why my job never gets
queued? I've searched this mailing list, but couldn't
get any further.

BTW, I do see (finished) Flagging and Transcoding jobs
in the queue from the mythbackend verbose output. So,
I know there are some jobs in the queue, just not user
ones.

Thanks,

Re: [mythtv-users] exit and shutdown from mythtv

2006-01-16 Thread Tim

so,
i've worked on it a little more.  found a couple
issues.
1)
need to have /sbin/halt in the sudoers file:
"live  ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown, /sbin/halt,
/sbin/reboot"
2)
need to have /sbin in my user path.  did this by adding "PATH=$PATH:/sbin"
to the .bashrc file in my mythtv user's directory.

then
the sudo commands worked.  unfortunately, that's not how mythtv must
call for shutdown.  i get "halt: must be superuser".

so i typed "chmod +s /sbin/halt".  now it works.  i can exit
from the menu button and my frontend will shutdown.  the sudo file stuff
doesn't mean anything now, and all users can now halt the system.  is there
a better way to do this?  thanks.
-Original Message-
the 'exit and
shutdown' button used to work for me.  isn't now though.  i've noticed
that the user i am logging in with does not have priveleges to run
shutdown.  so, i editted the sudoers file.  didn't seem to change
anything though.  here's my file, username live:

# /etc/sudoers #
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root. # #
See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file. # #
Host alias specification # User alias specification # Cmnd alias
specification Cmnd_Alias    SHUTDOWN = /sbin/shutdown #
User privilege specification root    ALL=(ALL) ALL
live    ALL = NOPASSWD: SHUTDOWN

but, when i choose
the 'exit and shutdown' button, i get a command not
found.  specifically, 'sh: line 1: halt: command not found'.  any
ideas?

Compile from source. Everything goes to /usr/local so it's fine. All
dependencies can be found in the normal debian stable repository (you
probably want that marillat source as well), so all you need to compile is
mythtv.

I have read that the buttons that will illuminate on
the Kameleon remotes are fixed according to the device
map in ROM (that is, if you program in a TV, then only
the buttons for that TV will light up). If you use
JP1 to write new data into the remote (to enable
disabled buttons), then supposedly the newly enabled
buttons still won't light up.

If you program a disabled button with an EFC, will it
light up (where previously it wouldn't because it was
disabled)?

I'm looking for a new remote, that's why I ask.

Thanks for your help on this one. I've decided to switch to an older
motherboard I have, and that fixed (nearly) everything. I found (on
this list and others) that I'm not the only one to have had problems
getting alsa to work right on the Asus K8N-E deluxe, and unless anyone
out there can contradict me, I'd recommend to everyone to stay away
from that board for now. My audio problems may stem from the fact
that my kernel and alsa drivers weren't up to date. Unfortunately,
when I update my kernel (via yum upgrade), everything stops working,
and I get the error:

When using the PVR-350 MPEG decoder, the sound comes
out the breakout connector on the card. You'll need
to loop the sound to your sound card (as discussed in
the archives to death) and configure the mixer
correctly.

I use the Kameleon 6-in-1 remote and absolutely love it. I liked it so
much I gave one to a friend for xmas for his mythtv, and another to my
dad for his non-mythtv home theatre.

Some things to be aware of, as you'll likely read about them in reviews
of the remote:

-it does support JP1 but there are no plugs for it. Ie, there are solder
points but no connector. (if you aren't adventurous on modding your
remote, just use efc (extended functionality codes, off-hand). these are
programmed using the remote buttons -- no soldering required!)

-it supposedly drains batteries, largely in part by the motion sensing.
this can be turned off though, which i did and haven't replace my
batteries after 2.5 months of use.

-with the motion sensing off you have to push a button to turn the
remote on. but the pushed button *does* send a signal. so you have to
get used to pushing a button with no effect (ie, the setup button at the
very bottom of the remote since it must be held for 2 seconds to
activate)

-grease on the screen is noticeable. if you like to eat chips and donuts
while using the remote, these kameleon remotes are (likely) not for you.

-i recommend at least the 6-in-1. there is an 8-in-1 Kamelon if you
really need that many devices.

The three largest features of the remote I love are:
-macro programming for the power button: turn on or off all devices with
a single click
-a home-theatre mode that lets you assign blocks of buttons to different
devices! ie, volume goes to your receiver, everything else goes to
mythtv
-a wild display that is a topic of conversation every time someone sees
it.

I have produced (what I think to be) a great lircd.conf and
corresponding .lircrc for the 6-in-1. I even have step-by-step
instructions for some EFC coding to enable all the buttons.
Unfortunately my wiki, where all this data is, is currently off-line
because I recently moved. But it will be back online within the first
week of February.

[mythtv-users] Problems with sound watching TV

2006-01-16 Thread Cristo Saulo Bolaños Trujillo
Hello,

I've tried to watch TV, but I get following failure: sound is very very
very very ... very low, nearly null.

Right: I've a pinnacle PC TV connected to a SB Live 5.1! through line
input, and works right when watching TV on xawtv, or listening an
external sound font (mp3 player).

I tried to record sound when showing tv with xawtv and it worked, low
sound, but worked (I used audacity).

When I try mythfrontend, I can view TV but *not* listen it (sound is
nearly null and line-input connected to tv-card), but if a plug another
sound font, like mp3 player, I can listen something, altought with mp3
player volume on top.

Where may be the failure ? A hardware issue when recording ? Mythtv
issues ?

Thanks.

Heh...I know how that goes, I started off with two tuners and then
realized that sometimes a man needs to watch live TV while two shows are
recording. Was quite pleased with how smoothly the addition went, once
I got over a few "you learn something new every day" moments.

Just about, as far as I know. There is a priority setting that you can
assign to each tuner card within mythtv-setup. I can't recall WHERE,
but when you find it, you can drop the PVR-350 down to a lower priority
setting. This won't EXCLUDE it from recording, but it'll make it the
last card selected, which will give you the same net effect except for
those times when you want to record three shows simultaneously (also
known as Sunday Nights At Our House, now that "24" is back.)

[mythtv-users] Adjusting End Time After Record Start

2006-01-16 Thread George Galt
All:

So last night was the season premiere of 24.  Unfortunately, on
the East Coast, the football game went over by about 15 minutes.
Since the guide data could not anticipate this, my recording was set
for 8-10 pm and I would have lost the last 15 minutes of the
show.  Fortunately, I noticed the problem and was able to set up a
manual recording from 10-10:30 to pick up the last portion of the
show.  However, it got me thinking if there was a way to adjust
recording times after a recording had started.  I looked through
the menus and in the documentation, but couldn't find anything (and I
didn't want to experiment during a recording that is crucial to the
happiness of my wife).  Does anyone know if this can be done?

Thanks,

George

Travis:

At a rather early screen during the set up process, there should have
been a selection for the type of use to which the computer would be
put: something along the lines of "server" "workstation" "desktop" and
"custom" (or something close to that).  You needed to select
"custom" as the type of set up.  Otherwise, the installer only
allows you to see options relevant to the type of computer you are
setting up.  My guess is that you selected "workstation" or
something along those lines, which assumes that you need a minimal
GUI/graphic environment.

Hope this helps.

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 & 500 in same box, sound issues

2006-01-16 Thread Intense Red
I have a PVR-350 in my system which worked fine with the PVR-350's hardware
decoder. The only "problem" was that MythTV is so slick TV watching has
increased and 1 tuner was not enough. :-)

So I added a PVR-500 to the box. The system is a combo frontend/backend
which outputs to the TV using the PVR-350's TV out, and it also serves as a
backend to a couple of computers in the house.

Adding the PVR-500 was no problem -- drop it in, IVTV found it
automagically, and I added the 2 tuners (etc.) to mythtv-setup and all works
well. Well, all except the local TV sound (remote frontends work just fine).

If I turn off the "Use the PVR-350's TV out / MPEG decoder" setting in the
frontend, both video and sound work fine. Sound comes out of the TV like it
should. If I turn on the "Use the PVR-350's TV out / MPEG decoder", I get
video but no sound.

Can anyone whack me with a clue-bat?

On a semi-related note, MythTV seems to grab whichever one of the 3 tuners
it wants to record things. What I'd like to do is to "reserve" the PVR-350
for live TV, and to have Myth do recordings only off from the 2 PVR-500's
tuners. Is this possible?

 Thanks in advance.

Agreed. My point was merely that lirc itself is working in that it
is receiving input from my remote and passing them on. But Michael
Dean points out that the cursor movements that I see during
mplayer indicate lircMD, not lircD.

Since it isn't, one could speculate that mplayer either that
1. mplayer isn't reading the correct input.conf (but it is since
there's only the one input.conf file around)
2. lirc is reading the wrong .lircrc (but it isn't since the same
file is used to configure input for mythtv and *that* is
working.)

Ahhh! Another penny drops. It seems reasonable that I would want
to keep lircmd running though. As a test though, I'll see what
happens when I disable it.

That's Interesting. Does X begin ignoring input received from
lircmd when mythtv starts? Or does mythtv somehow direct lircmd to
stop messing around with the cursor?

I assume that Myth doesn't begin ignoring input from lirc if one
uses the "Internal" player though. Am I right?

The .lircrc and .mplayer/config files looks good though. I'm still
puzzled. But I've got some new ideas from you guys so I'll play
around a bit more and the results will hopefully point me more
closely to the solution.

One last thing Michael. You wrote:
> Let it keep using the default one in /etc/mplayer/input.conf

That contradicts the mplayer man page which states:
"The default configuration file for the input system is
~/.mplayer/input.conf but it can be overriden using the -input
conf option."
and the file itself has a comment
"## The file should be placed in the $HOME/.mplayer directory."

Either way though, it doesn't seem to matter. I'll reconfirm
though by explicitly adding the -input option to the mythvideo
player configuration.

2006-01-16 Thread drbob
I'd really like to try out mythtv. However my only option would be to
run the backend on my debian server (the frontend would be on a dual
boot windows/linux machine).

The problem is my server runs debian stable. I could countenance an
upgrade to etch but not to sid (I can't trust sid with my email and
filestore). Is there be a package for debian stable or etch in the
pipeline? The webpage of the new package maintainers is down
and I can find no info on the list since
the announcement a month ago of the new repository.

It's beginning to look depressingly like I would need to switch
distributions to use mythtv :-( Any suggestions on what to do welcome.

This is pure speculation, but there does appear to be a dvb-t card
available that supports a common interface slot. If your service
provider can supply you with a CAM module (topup tv in the UK provide
CAMs to subscribers on request for use in idtvs) then it *might* be
possible to get the channels into mythtv. I think you'd be exploring
uncharted territory though:

CAM compatible dvb-t card:

Yep. You should press Enter on that showing from the conflicts
page or any other scheduling page (epg, proglist, etc.) and click
"Reactivate". You don't need to remove the rule and make a new one
or add an override, just reactivate.

If you stopped or deleted a recording in progress, the scheduler
needs to keep track of this fact so that it doesn't restart the
recording each time the scheduler runs or restart it if the master
backed is restarted. Reactivate is specifically for this situation
to tell the scheduler that you want to start recording again.

In current SVN, this would actually work. The recstatus is now kept
in the oldrecorded and the the scheduler checks this. Removing the
item from Previously Recorded causes a change to be signaled so the
scheduler runs and there is no recstatus of the current showing. So
unless there is a later showing that it could record instead, it
would restart the current showing.

For 0.18.x or earlier, this would not work as the state was held
in the memory of scheduler.

You are using a version from before Oct 5th 2005. This is probably
fixed in http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/7391 though the
description doesn't specify this obscure case.

For yucks, try temporarily raising the channel priority for
286 by 1 in TV Settings->Recording Priorities->Channel Priorities.
This should change the 03:35 and 05:00 showings' total priority to 8.

For this precise reason I use a program called tv_grab_dvb to get the
DVB EPG data when the card is not being used in MythTV. DVB radio
channels are not supported well in 0.18.1 so I use tv_grab_dvb to get

Simple question - the log states that /dev/lirc does not exist - is
this true? It is entirely possible that /dev/lirc0 _does_ exist but
the lircd startup script is defaulting to use /dev/lirc. Creating
symlink from /dev/lirc0 to /dev/lirc (if this is the case) should fix
it. Make sure the symlink has appropriate access permissions for
mythtv users. You can also edit the startup script to explicitly set
the device, but the symlink is easier.

I use a udev rule to make sure the symlink is created at boot as some
applications may look for /dev/lirc and others /dev/lirc0.

[mythtv-users] XvMC for an EPIA Box (Playing DVDs on a Mini-ITX)?

2006-01-16 Thread Matt Jordan
I have MythTV running on a Mini-ITX (EPIA) box and DVD performance is
extremely bad.

First off:

The system is EPIA CL-1 board with the CLE266 graphics chipset. I
am running Ubuntu (Breezy) and I have recompiled the kernel to enable
Unichrome support and X indicates that direct rendering is enabled.

Although TV plays back perfectly (at least at 640x480), trying to play
a DVD pushes the CPU to 100% usage and the video is horribly garbled.
I am to understand that I need to use XvMC to enable the native MPEG-2
decoding hardware that this board is equipped with. The problem is
that I don't know how.

What should I do to compile or add in the support for XvMC? Does
anyone have a Debian package of MPlayer or Xine with it integrated?

Thanks!

The 'channel' table in the database - for tuner based channels, there
is a field called 'freqid' which should contain the "channel number"
i.e. between 21-69 in the UK. This is the tuning information that
MythTV uses internally to tune the PVR card to a channel.

Maybe the path to the program is not in your environment path string.
My mythfrontend is in /usr/bin

So try this;

cd /usr/bin
./mythfrontend

See if it runs, if not try and find where the binary is and then cd to
the dir and then issue ./mythfrontend to run it.

This scenario is possible if you are running >1 card using separate
listings grabbers - e.g. for the UK, you could be using a PVR-xx0 card
with the uk_rt XMLTV grabber, and a DVB card using the DVB EPG. If you
channels are configured in a certain way, the first update could be
populating program information using the uk_rt grabber against
channels which include the DVB channels, and then any DVB channels
which are configured to get their listings from the DVB EPG will be
updated again, resulting in the log entries you are seeing.

> 2. Where does the data come from?

LIkely the DVB EPG

> 3. How does it know which channels to update?

DVB channels can be configured to get their listings from the DVB EPG

> 4. If the answer to the above is related to the configuration of the
> mythfilldatabase side of things then why is it getting incorrect data from
> my input source?

It is more likely the data being retrieved is correct, but the
configuration of the grabbers/mythfilldatabase/channels is causing
this behaviour

> 5. How do I stop it?

Assuming that the behaviour is caused by having 2 sources of listings
data running, I would ensure that only DVB channels for which there
are no listings available from the uk_rt grabber are set to use the
EPG, and all other channels use a common source. This should not only
stop data being overwritten, but also aid the scheduler tremendously
by ensuring that channels available on multiple input sources have the
same listings information. (Imagine if you have ITV1 available on your
PVR's tuner, PVR's direct cable input from an external Sky/NTL box,
_and_ on a DVB card. If the listings information for the channel
differs on the three sources, there is a very high chance that a
program's listing information will have different description/subtitle
etc which will wreak havoc with the scheduler.)

Obviously, I have made a few guesses here about your setup, but
without a DVB card I can't see another possible source for the
listings updates you are seeing.

After much pain and suffering, I got it working by setting NVAGP "1"
in the config file.

However, now I hook up the componant dongle, and I'm back where I started.

I think I'm going to try compiling AGPGART as a module (Fedora4) so I
can try NVAGP, see if that solves some of the oddness.

I, like you, was hoping this was an upgrade to the 5700 that was in
the box... It was smooth for the playoffs this weekend, but I'm trying
to get the dongle working.

I'll let you know how it does.

Sounds like you need to define the full path to the shutdown command in
the setup box. By default, most systems put shutdown into /sbin and a
non-root user doesn't have /sbin in its path.

Try putting /sbin/shutdown (or /usr/sbin/shutdown if thats where your
distro stores it) into the dialog box.

Re: [mythtv-users] Entering USA Cable channels into the DVB tables

2006-01-16 Thread Len Reed
Thanks, Michael.

I'm not sure what you mean by my having PSIP data, though. The channel
line I quoted was one I cobbled together using the dvb utilities. I
started with a list of the cable frequencies and ran azap. Taking the
frequencies it found, I then ran it and dvbtraffic to snoop things.
That gave me the PIDs. I plugged those back into my channel file and
finally was able to run "azap -r" and cat combined video+audio from the
device, and play that back with mplayer. Oh, I changed the first column
to "CBS" using "vi". :)

CBS:66900:QAM_256:2176:2177:1

Any way, I never was able to get mythbackend to record DVB using 0.18.2.
Today I ungraded to the latest SVN. myth-setup's channel scanner then
found my channels, calling them things like "99#1". I still have to use
a bit of mysql to clean that up and tie the channels to zap2it
schedules, but that I know to be straightforward.

Cheers,
Len

Re: [mythtv-users] Intermittant high disk activity

2006-01-16 Thread Gavin Haslett
I had this problem when my machine was "fresh out of the box" as well. I found
that setting mythfrontend suid root fixed that. Not perfect from a security
standpoint, I know... but the box is well defended behind a firewall and its
own internal firewall.

Another possibility is memory. Or possibly something that's running in the
background.

Oh, one other possibility would be filesystem in use on the video partition.
I've found (through trial and error) that XFS is by far the best filesystem to
use on the video partition for general use. It deletes instantly, almost never
seems to get fragmented or "busy" and generally is a nice FS to use. I tried
ReiserFS (kept trying to rewrite journals while I was trying to watch TV) and
ext3 (fragmented too easily for my tastes)... though I've been led to believe
from a friend of mine that you can use an ext2 partition for buffers so long as
you keep 'em below 2Gb. That apparently works well.

As mentioned before, it could also be MySQL... but to be honest I doubt it.
Normally MySQL is pretty solid and doesn't just randomly do stuff unless you
tell it. However, I wouldn't rule it out.

Gavin

The other catch is that a lot of the newer remotes
(like the URC-10820 I have my eye on) aren't JP1
remotes, but JP1.1 or JP1.2 remotes. The JP1.2
remotes have the same connector (a 3x2), but the
internals are totally different.

If the remote is a JP1.2, then forget about being able
to use the JP1 tools (different CPU, different means
of communication that hasn't been reverse engineered
yet, and the progress is slow). Also, some of the
newer Radio Shack remotes might not support EFCs,
which allow you to program codes to buttons that don't
normally send them (which JP1 could fix).

If anybody has figured out EFCs on the Radio Shack
15-2146 remote (the one with the voice prompts), I'd
love to know how they did it - it looks good for a PVR
setup.

Re: [mythtv-users] Myth could not locate the menu file setup.xml

2006-01-16 Thread Brad DerManouelian
If you're running svn without any prefix options, it's likely in /usr/
local/share/mythtv.

Best way to find out is something like find /usr/ -name setup.xml

Since it's obviously not where frontend is expecting it to be, you
can run your frontend with your $MYTHTVDIR environment variable
pointing to that location like:
$ export MYTHTVDIR=/usr/local/
$ mythfrontend &

There's a command-line switch to tell it which directory, as well. I
forgot what it is, but mythfrontend --help should tell you.

Are the "PCM", "Master" and "VIA DXS" mixer settings set to non-zero
values? When I updated from ALSA 1.0.9 to 1.0.10, I found that I had to
explicitly set the "VIA DXS" mixer settings to a non-zero value.

The 15-2116 does not require any physical modification; there is a JP1
port right under the battery cover. Didn't even need a screwdriver.

If they are extremely new models, it's possible that no one there has

[mythtv-users] exit and shutdown from mythtv

the 'exit and
shutdown' button used to work for me.  isn't now though.  i've noticed
that the user i am logging in with does not have priveleges to run
shutdown.  so, i editted the sudoers file.  didn't seem to change
anything though.  here's my file, username live:

# /etc/sudoers #
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root. # #
See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file. # #
Host alias specification # User alias specification # Cmnd alias
specification Cmnd_Alias    SHUTDOWN = /sbin/shutdown #
User privilege specification root    ALL=(ALL) ALL
live    ALL = NOPASSWD: SHUTDOWN

but, when i choose
the 'exit and shutdown' button, i get a command not
found.  specifically, 'sh: line 1: halt: command not found'.  any
ideas?

No, you only need the kernel sources if you wnat to build kernel
modules, not if you just want to download the kmdls and use them.

[mythtv-users] Different Tuners have different sounds??

2006-01-16 Thread James Oltman
I have a PVR-350 and a PVR-250 in my backend machine.  There is a
NOTICEABLE difference in the audio quality between the two cards.  My
350 sounds much better than the 250.  The 250 has a staticy sound to
it.  I have to turn up the volume of my home theater just to get the
same volume of audio on the 250 as I get on the 350.  What can I do to
change this?  Is there a setting in Mythsetup that needs to be
checked?  Is it something that I need to change every time I log in?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I need to increase the GAF.
Thanks!

I followed the instructions given in Jarod C. Wilson's guide. Therefore, my kernel version is 2.6.14-1_1656_FC4. The "0.8.0-CVS" lirc version are obtained from the ATrpms together with the kernel modules as directed in the guide.
As for the LIRC_OPTS variable, this is the first time I have heard of it. Where to I check that and how should I set it.  One more thing, I discovered that I do not have /dev/lirc rather I have /dev/lircd. Is this normal?

Is sound turned on in the BIOS?
Did you fiddle with the internal jumpers, even to set something else?
Can you get any sounds if you try to play a wav file with various programs?
Have you tried all of the outputs? I had my output plugged into the line
input at one stage BTDT!
Have you tried fiddling with kmix and made sure that the volume is
turned up?
Is the external amp properly set up? Kinda silly to curse the machine
when you have inadvertantly switched on 'Tape Monitor' and thus
effectively turned off the input? Might help to plug in some earphones
directly to the motherboard.

Re: [mythtv-users] Fwd: Problem with XvMC being slow

2006-01-16 Thread Steve Malenfant
The problem I've seen on my system are :

- Use Video as Time Base (experimental). For some reason mine was
checked and sometime it would work just fine. Disabling that solved
my problem.
- Not using Alsa drivers, every time a new kernel gets out you have to
go get the alsa driver, pain that it doesn't upgrade on it's own.
- Ring Buffer Size is a problem when too high on my backend, looks
like every few seconds my frontend would have to wait for I/O from the
backend and pause frames for a few milliseconds. When you check with
"top" and you see "wa" using CPU time, that's a problem.
- My 100$ PC from fry's (Duron 1600) with PCI MX4400 is enough to play 1080i HD.

Doesn't sound so good though!

Did you try upping the TCP buffers for the MythTV protocol? (See the
config screens in MVPMC itself)

> (The on-screen graphics are quite useful).

Do you use -r /nfs/path/to/mythtv/recordings or use the filebrowser to
play the recordings. The former (which I use) gives the program info
on the screen which is what I presume you mean by the on-screen
graphics, but plays the files via NFS. Its works well here!

BTW You'll probably get a better answer on the mvpmc mailing list!

And often the 'misinformation' is not untrue, but just not applicable to
the precise situation. The inclusion of the dvb modules in the kernel is
one area which has competely up-ended the state of affairs which existed
at say, kernel 2.6.4...

I need to have a real hard think about the use case here, I suspect that
I wont need use mythweb, unless a front end is running.
I will also have a look at the pre-shutdown-check command that I have
just spotted.

It's probably on at different times. Couldn't you do the "record any
time on any channel" type of recording mode? Then anytime it's on you'd
be good to go?On 1/16/06, Chris Petersen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I'm not familiar with the "0.8.0-CVS" lirc version, and you don't
mention what kernel version you are using, but I have noticed that
lirc seems to be very sensitive to kernel version, for example
0.8.0_pre1 works with my 2.6.14 kernel, while 0.8.0_pre3 does not,
although pre3 says that it has modifications for the 2.6.15 kernel.

I assume you have checked that LIRC_OPTS is pointing to the correct
character device for your setup.

[mythtv-users] Lost sound on EPIA SP -- how to diagnose?

2006-01-16 Thread Ole Sandum
Hello everybody,

It seems everyone else's problems here are far more exotic, but I am out
of things to try and going desperate. So here goes:

Just to try it out, I built a pilot FE/BE combo with FC4 on a VIA EPIA
SP8000 a couple of months ago. It was running nicely, but was begging
for faster hardware and more storage. So over christmas, I got myself a
nice Athlon 64-based box full of slots and drives to put the BE on. Hit
a couple of bumps on the way, but has it running nicely now using the
pure 64-bit packages from "atrpms-testing", mythfilling program guides
and recording everything in sight. Sweet. Thank you Axel, thank you
Jarod, and thank you everone else contributing.

Now to the problem: somewhere along the way I lost the sound on the EPIA
and I can't get it back. It's just plain analog stereo out to the TV
set, so nothing fancy, but I don't know how to diagnose it. I've tried
un-/reinstall the alsa-{drivers,lib,utils} packages, skimming log files
for messages, but everything seems normal. Except the output remains
silent. I suppose this happened as a result of updating packages, but
since the original installaion was done months ago, I don't have a
precise recollection of what was installed/updated when.

So please, any hints for places to look, stuff to read, or things to try
out will be most welcome.

/Ole
