Re: [mythtv-users] Lircd runs -> irw: no signal

2005-04-06 Thread Andy Long
Might be a stupid question, but are you sure you have the proper
lircrc file, and that it is in the proper place? IRW responding is
dependent on that file. You can try to run irrecord and see if your
receiver is picking up any signal at all, regardless of the lircrc
file.

I went ahead and did all of the various mythtv parts seperately via
apt-get (mythtv-frontend, mythtv-backend, libmyth, etc...). It's
there now.

Much thanks.

Re: [mythtv-users] XvMC compiled in by default?

2005-03-29 Thread Andy Long
Odd, because mine does not have a checkbox for that. I see the screen
that has the PVR350 checkbox (says use PVR350 for TV output, the title
of the screen is something like "Hardware decoder settings"), but
there's nothing in there for XvMC.

If I do an apt-get install of either mythtv or mythtv-suite (after
doing apt-get update to make sure it's looking for new packages), it
says I already have the newest version installed. Am I missing
something here? Is there something I need to enable for my graphics
card? It's a GeForce4 MX440, which I understood supported it.

Any further help on what I'm doing wrong here would be appreciated.

Well, it might be an annoyance, but you're getting program data from
them for free. Considering that people using Tivo/Replay pay about
$35 for the same Zap2it program information during those 3 months, I'd
say it's not a bad bargain for taking a 30 second survey.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: USB MCE IR Receiver

If you'd like to give compiling LIRC another chance, Pete and I have
written a guide for doing it on FC3. It's directed at enabling more
devices than 2 with LIRC (now not needed for ATRPMS due to a change a
few days ago), but should be pretty straightforward. May be worth a
shot if you'd like to try.

Depends on who makes the "other card". If it's not a hauppauge, i
wouldn't think it's very likely. Only one way to find out. Plug it
in and try it out.

Anyone know how the progress of the 150mce is coming for myth? I know
Jarod said he had both the PVR150 and PVR500 working (or nearly so).
I was just wondering if anyone has had success with the PVR150mce.

That's actually some pretty smart marketing on the part of Plextor.
I'm somewhat impressed that this is a part of their marketing
strategy. Leads me to believe that this is something they might

2005-03-07 Thread Andy Long
I used these two sites when I built my serial IR Receiver. I have
zero experience reading electrical schematics and almost none
soldering, but I was still able to get it working easily. That should
give you some base as to how difficult these sites are to use.

http://lnx.manoweb.com/lirc/

http://www.modasylum.com/guides.php?guide=16&page=2

And, a GREAT parts list if you want to use Radio Shack parts (i
haven't had interference problems with my IR Receiver from there).

http://www.casemodgod.com/htpc_ir_receiver1.htm

The only thing not listed there is the voltage regulator. I got the
5V, 1000mA one. Though the sites use the 78L05, 7805 will work fine
too.

Just curious... but what's with all the distro hating lately? Someone
started a thread earlier hating on FC3, and now this one on SuSe.
Wouldn't it just be more appropriate to help people deal with problems
on certain distros as they come across them, instead of just writing
off a given distro a "unusable"? Seems to me that someone out there
has gotten linux running on about every flavor I can think of off
hand. I understand it's frustrating when someone has troubles with a
given distro, but let's let people decide for themselves and stop the
whining.

I am not a guru either (in fact, I'm about a green as a user gets),
and I have had zero probelms with FC3. I think you warning all people
off it because it didn't work for you is a bit premature, especially
given the fact that a sizeable portion of the people on this list use
FC3 and have virtually no problems with it. Glad you found something

[mythtv-users] Question about EPG in 0.17

2005-03-03 Thread Andy Long
Ok, hopefully this is really simple, but I haven't been able to figure it out:

Whenever I exit LiveTV, and go back into it, the program guide is set
to Channel 2, no matter what channel I was on when I exited Live TV
the last time. This is kinda troublesome, given that I have a digital
cable box and would like to know what channel I'm on. I would like it
to remember the channel when I exit LiveTV and go back to LiveTV
later. Anyone know where/how to resolve this?

Re: [mythtv-users] MythTV Presentation - Requesting Comments/Opinions

2005-03-03 Thread Andy Long
Some other things you might mention:

-Ability to configure the frontend to have a multitude of different
themes. Can really make your box "stand out" as opposed to the more
generic Tivo/Replay themes

-Ability to add multiple capture cards to record 2, 3 or more shows at
a time. The most I've ever seen on a store bought box is two

-Ability to put it whatever casing you want. Can make it look much
nicer in the living room

-Full customizability. Only does what you want

As for a comment:

I love that MythTV gives me the power to control what I want to watch
and gives me more control over the interface than any commercial
product. How many other people can record 3 shows at once, and watch
whatever they've recorded in any room of their house?

Re: [mythtv-users] Broadcast Flag Article mentions MythTV and quotes Issac

2005-03-03 Thread Andy Long
Cable isn't losing money throught people sharing TV shows. The
networks maybe are (and that is risky). What about the case of
broadcast television or OTA-HD content. No one pays a nickel for
that, and never have, yet I haven't seen NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS or any
others go belly up.

Most people pay for cable because its convenient. If the networks all
decided to distribute their shows over bit torrent and everyone went
that route, then tough shit for the cable companies. It's not like
they have some right to exist, nor are we indebted to them.
Innovation has changed how content was distributed before, and it will
do so again. The broadcast flag is just an attempt by the networks to
keep from having to switch to a new method of distribution, because
when that happens some of the old hats in the industry might lose
money. We are *slowly* seeing the music industry come around to this
notion that if you sell the people what they want, they won't do it
illegally.

If only one person in the country paid for cable and then shared the
shows, don't you think content creators/copyright holders would
realize that? In such an instance, where everyone has shown preference
for getting TV/movies via the internet, which would you say is better:
prosecuting everyone and making them get cable, or putting content in
the form people want and letting them access it that way? It's
something that could still be charged for. It just takes a different
business model to do it. Just because people are choosing to get
their content in a different way doesn't mean that it should
inherently be illegal. It just means the market is changing, and the
law should allow the market to find its happy medium.

Since a copy has to be transfixed to a medium to receive copyright,
how exactly does broadcasting qualify? This isn't an attack against
you, just something I have oft wondered. Nonetheless, it seems to be
splitting hairs on an issue. So, if you don't own the original
filmstock a movie was shown on, but instead only own the DVD, no one
should be able to watch it with you? Your friends shouldn't be
allowed to borrow it? The DVD is not the original copy. It is only a
copy of the original copy transfixed on a different medium.

By similar logic, it would seem libraries across the country are
committing mass infringement, since I know of few libraries that hand
out original manuscripts. Any I have been too hand out copies of
copies (read: books). And if you tape music off Top 40 radio and lend
it to a friend, is that a copyright offense? I am certainly not a
lawyer (yet), but it would seem that even if this is what copyright
has come to mean, that we are letting fair use be destroyed in the
name of protecting a legal fiction (aka intellectual property).

I am certainly not advocating mass infringement, but let's be
reasonable here. The framers of our Constitution intended for their
to be a balanced, "leaky" copyright system. Perfect control over
Intellectual Property was never intended, and in fact was outright
rejected by both Madison and Jefferson as a bad idea. The purpose of
copyright was to give incentive to produce while allowing for the
transfer of ideas from person to person. We certianly have a system
that MORE than compensates the originator of a work. The broadcast
flag only further upsets this balance by making us come more near to
perfect control of IP, which I - as well as many others - believe is
both unhealthy for maintaining a creative environment and a bad
principle for a democratic country. In every other instance where a
new form of technology has upset the previous scheme of distributing
copyrighted material (player pianos, radio, television, cable, VCRs,
etc...), we have relied on the market to find the solution, not
imposed government regulations to keep the powers that be in business.

No, this is not "rightly" something that media companies should be
allowed to prevent. Under current law, they CAN'T prevent it. It is
perfectly legal of you to lend a copy of a movie/TV show to a friend
to borrow and watch. Would you assert that when you have friends
over, they shouldn't be allowed to watch TV at your house because they
don't help pay your cable bill? If you are the person who rents a
movie at blockbuster, should your wife/girlfriend/kids have to also
rent the movie before they can sit down and watch it with you? The
broadcast flag is trying to enforce a legal lie that you are the only
person who should be allowed to watch content that came from your
television, when both previously written law and common law say
otherwise. What she advocates doing is legal, and should remain legal
as a form of fair use.

Re: [mythtv-users] Slightly OT: MythTV as Senior Project?

2005-03-03 Thread Andy Long
This might be kinda douche (i'm known for coming up with that sort of
idea in the morning), but how about a reccomendation-type feature,
similar to what Tivo has but on a much smaller scale. Maybe have it
keep a log/database of important characteristics about what you watch
and record (such as actors, director, genre, etc...). This would then
be used to generate show ideas that the user might want to see based
on what they previously watched. I'm not sure if something like that
would meet your requirements or not. Or hell, maybe it already has
something like that in or available for myth. Just a thought.

Just use the remote to hit the kids. Especially effective with the
monstrosity that is the Radio Shack remote. Though it won't lock the
TV, it will either induce fear or coma, both of which should be
effective in achieving your ends :-P

Re: [mythtv-users] FC3, lirc and irman

2005-03-02 Thread Andy Long
Not sure how much experience you have using irrecord or linux, but
this might be helpful in getting irrecord to work (it was for me).

First, kill the process that's using lirc. Type:

# /sbin/fuser /dev/lirc

You'll get a process number. Then type

# kill(where is your process number)

Now, to run irrecord, type;

# irrecord /home/mythtv/remoterec.conf

The /home/mythtv/remoterec.conf is the outptut file irrecord will
make. You'll be able to tell pretty quickly. One of the first steps
asks you to hold down a button on the remote. If it gets input, it
will make a series of dots across the screen. If it gets nothing, it
will just sit there.

Be sure to sit within a few feet of the TV and aim at the receiver for
best results.

That is odd. The only thing you could maybe try is:

1) Recompile mythtv

still have the problem.

2005-02-28 Thread Andy Long
>From the main screen in mythfronted:

Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> TV Settings -> Recording Profiles

In the screen that comes up, choose MPEG-2 Encoders
Then choose Live TV
For me it's the 3rd screen in (first one is to change the profile
name, second is to set the resolution... make sure it's at 720x480 or
less). On the top field of the 3rd screen it will say something like
"Codec". Look below that for "Stream Type." Change that around to
some different ones (MPEG2-PS works great, but lots of people says
DVDSpecial 2 is the best quality). Restart and see what happens.

As for the IVTV codec, which are you using. If you installed from an
rpm or via apt-get, you can check the version with the following
command:

# rpm -qa ivtv

I am currently using ivtv 0.2 rc3e and it works well in terms of stability.

I'd have to disagree there. My FC3 system is quite stable (though I'm
wrestling w/ some issues, but none are related to FC3 or cause
crashes).Aaron, what codec are you using (it would be in your
recording profile under the LiveTV profile. MPEG-PS, DVD-SPECIAL2,
another one? Have you tried changing those around to see if there's

[mythtv-users] MythTV and codec question/problem

2005-02-28 Thread Andy Long
I'm using the DVD-Special1 codec for both live tv viewing and
recoding, as it give me the clearest picture. However, whenver I
pause a show that i'm watching live, the timer showing how long it has
been paused does not increment (it just sits at 0:00). Similarly, if
I rewind live TV, it doesn't ever increment the timer showing how far
back I've gone. It just always stays at 0:00. This is a pretty big
problem, because if I rewind live TV, I can't fast forward or jump to
get it back to live (or almost-live, I know there's a buffer).
Similar behavior happens under DVD-Special2. But, under MPEG-PS I
have no problems, and everything behaves as it should. I would just
use MPEG-PS, but the video quality is quite a bit worse than the
DVD-Special codecs. I have rebuilt my system looking to correct this
(using a different kernel and newer version of IVTV), but to no avail.
Anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it?

System info:

Distro: FC3
Kenel: 2.6.10-1.760_FC3 (also used on of the 2.6.9 versions)
IVTV: 0.2.0-63_rc3e (have also used the 0.1.9 version)
MythTV: 0.16

Thanks.

Re: [mythtv-users] Remote mappings

2005-02-28 Thread Andy Long
Open the lircrc file. Look for the "Guide" button entry for mythtv.
Whatever the current command is (I think it's set to " i ' right now)
change it to an M. you'll need to reload lirc for it to take effect
(reboot or depmod).

Info on it here http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-11.html#ss11.1
See the part under "Watching TV or a recording" about bringing up the
EPG. More info on EPG a little further down in the doc too.

into myth somewhere, or is it a seperate module? I've dug around on
google looking for info on it, but have just come up empty handed

it certainly looks better, but for an additonal $10-$20, you can get a

2) I am one of the authors of lircsetup.com, and am most comfortable
using that method. Just a heads up so you know where I might be
steering you. Can you attach the following files for me:

/etc/lircd.conf
/etc/modprobe.conf
/etc/rc.d/rc.local
your channel changing script

3) Which version of LIRC are you using? (you can find out by typing
"rpm -qa lirc" minus the quotes in a command prompt.

4) Have you tried both COM1 and COM2 for your IR blaster?

If you grabbed the lircd.conf file for the new remote from Jarod's
site, and also grabbed the lircrc file from Jarod's site, you'll have
problems. The button mappings in the lircrc file don't correspond to
what the buttons have been named in the lircd.conf file.

Here's the contents of what I posted in another email: You can find
the full contents of the email here:

I'm just taking a stab here, but it would seem that while you are
using the proper lircd.conf file, your are using the lircrc file for
the "old" grey/black remote. You should be able to tell fairly
easily, and it shouldn't be hard to fix. The "codes" section of your
lircd.conf file should look as follows:

BEGIN lircd.conf PASTE--

begin codes
Power 0x17BD
Go 0x1FBB
TV 0x179C
Videos 0x1F98
Music 0x1799
Pictures 0x1F9A
Guide 0x179B
Radio 0x1F8C
UP 0x1794
LEFT 0x1F96
RIGHT 0x1797
DOWN 0x1F95
OK 0x17A5
Back-Exit 0x1F9F
Menu 0x178D
Prev-Channel 0x1F92
Mute 0x178F
Volume-UP 0x1F90
Volume-DOWN 0x1791
Channel-UP 0x1FA0
Channel-DOWN 0x17A1
Record 0x1FB7
Stop 0x17B6
Rewind 0x1FB2

hash 0x178E
red 0x1F8B
green 0x17AE
yellow 0x1FB8
blue 0x17A9
end codes

END PASTE

Does your lircrc file look like this? Here's a snippet from the top
of the one I saw on Jarod's site:

---BEGIN lircrc PASTE

# Channel Up
begin
prog = mythtv
button = CH+
repeat = 3
config = Up
end

# Channel Down
begin
prog = mythtv
button = CH-
repeat = 3
config = Down
end

# OK/Select
begin
prog = mythtv
button = OK
config = Space
end

# Play
begin
prog = mythtv
button = PLAY
config = Return
end

--END PASTE

Look at the "button = " part for each entry in the lircrc file. One
says "button = CH+". Another "button = CH-" and so on. These entries
for button need to correspond to something in your lircd.conf file.
With they lircd.conf for that old grey/black remote, the lircd.conf
called the channel up button on the remote "CH+". However, the
lircd.conf file for the new remote calls it "Channel-UP". The old
lircd.conf called channel down "CH-", while the new one calls it
"Channel-DOWN". If you change the "button =" entries in your lircrc
file, changing "CH+" to "Channel-UP", changing "CH-" to "Channel-DOWN"
and so on, reboot the box, and test mythtv, this should fix the
problem. Make sure you change any copy of lircrc that you're using.

You can look at the file differences for some comparisons of the
lircrc file to the old and the new remotes.

http://lircsetup.com/lirc/blaster/files/haupgreyold.conf.txt

lircd.conf for new grey/black remote:

Please reply with whether or not this was the issue.

Thanks.

won't work without the kernel module. You'll either have to build
your own against the kernel, or just use the kernel listed on Jarod's

Since irw is registering "all" the keys your press, it is not likely a
problem with your lircd.conf file. Instead, it seems to be a problem
with your lircrc. Just to make sure we're on the same page, your have
copies of your lircrc file in the following locations:

/home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
/home/mythtv/lircrc Re: [mythtv-users] hauppauge 350 remote troubles

Oh, and try putting a copy of your lirc file in ~/lircrc (the home
directory of your mythtv user).

Re: [mythtv-users] lircd dying. Requires modprobe on reboot

my guess is because LIRC and fedora core 3 play very badly with each
other. It seems like there's a race condition between IVTV and LIRC.
There are several ways this can be fixed, depending on your kernel
version (i'm using 2.6.9-1.724_FC3), but adding the following in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local is what did it for me. put it under the line that
says "touch /var/lock/subsys/local"

/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ivtv
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe lirc_i2c

Reboot again, and see if it that solves it.

Re: [mythtv-users] hauppauge 350 remote troubles

Check to make sure that the directory you put your lircrc file in is
actually in the directory for your mythtv user and not root. i.e. If
your non-root account is called "mythuser", then make sure that it's
in /home/mythuser/.mythtv/lircrc and also make sure that you are
launching mythfrontend as mythuser and not as root. Launching as
root, or having the lircrc file in the a directory only root has
access to would cause this problem.

Re: [mythtv-users] Article on MythTV in the latest PC Magazine - Article included

I disagree with your assessment of Dvorak's article. I sometimes
disagree with him, but I really don't think he paints MythTV in a
negative light whatsoever. This is posted for the purposes of
academic discussion about the article and its implications.

--BEGIN ARTICLE---

While you have surely read about HP Media Centers and new DVRs from
cable providers, the real action is underground: a slow and steady
invasion of incredible products created by slick young coders who are
sick of products designed not to make life easier but to appease a
Hollywood preoccupied with digital rights management. The leader in
this effort is MythTV, perhaps the most powerful DVR yet devised.

MythTV is all the rage among high-level engineering types in Silicon
Valley. It's the brainchild of 26-year-old Isaac Richards, who told me
he started it two and a half years ago because he "was bored." MythTV
is a free software system written in C++ that, when combined with
various TV tuner, audio, and other cards, will turn a small computer
into a slick, powerful, feature-rich DVR. Do you hate commercials? You
can set it up so that it doesn't just skip commercials in playback but
never records them in the first place, so there's nothing to skip.

The software also incorporates MP3/Ogg features, along with slide
shows and everything else you can imagine, including WebTV-like
functionality for the TV set. While Richards has carefully avoided
adding any illegal features, such as DeCSS for ripping DVDs, the
architecture of the product works with plug-ins. In no time, someone
anonymously threw a plug-in into the ether that allows a MythTV box to
rip DVDs and strip out both CSS and Macrovision code so the material
can be transcoded. This means that MPEG-2 DVDs can easily be turned
into MPEG-4 files and watched on a laptop or even passed around
trading networks. Worried about country codes? Forget it, they're
gone.

Richards is working on the 17th version of the software and has about
15 coders working with the source code, adding features, debugging,
and tweaking.

What do the MythTV folks get out of all this, besides praise? If you
listen to them (and the users), they get TV the way they want it.

This movement doesn't stop here. MythTV is just the tip of a
multimedia iceberg that has managed to float under the radar so far.
For example, at CES, as far as I could tell only Transmeta was showing
a MythTV lash-up. Few showgoers had a clue as to what they were
looking at.

MythTV is a Linux-based system and requires some knowledge to set up.
Windows users are seeing a similar effort called myHTPC (my Home
Theater Personal Computer), a much looser initiative that first
appeared in detail in 2002. myHTPC is not a wide-open architecture
like MythTV, and it seems to emphasize quality imagery, especially by
incorporating various line doublers and other tweaks that are out
there if you look hard enough.

Probably the most interesting of these is DScaler, found at
http://www.dscaler.com www.dscaler.com . According to its Web site,
the project has a simple goal: "The DScaler project is an ongoing
attempt to get the best video quality possible from a Windows PC."
Like the MythTV team, these folks are essentially using the
open-source approach to public development. Headed by deinterlacing
expert John Adcock, they're producing code that gives you the
image-improvement power that was once the domain of Faroudja, whose
line doublers used to cost thousands of dollars.

All this activity within the video-image realm is a result of needing
to find a purpose for the wasted power of today's processors. We've
been waiting for a jazzy new direction in personal computing, and this
appears to be it. This is the real convergence we've been told about.
And what's interesting is, yet again, it's the small shops with the
smart young coders doing all the heavy lifting.

Everyone I know who has ever seen or played with MythTV wants it, but
it's a do-it-yourself project and not for the timid. Eventually that
will change as packagers appear and bundle prebuilt systems together.

There are other implications of all this. In a changing universe,
technologists will refuse to be hemmed in by artificial roadblocks
created for the purpose of maintaining the status quo. Microsoft and
Hollywood and whoever else can create all the DRM schemes they want;
they can sue college kids for trading songs, block trading networks,
shut down BitTorrent systems-but it won't do them any good. The forces
of "We want it our way" will overpower them again and again, because
that's the way technology works.

And this will all be shared. In a networked, computer-based world, the
sense of community breeds a socialistic desire to share, not covet.
This mentality is at the root of all the open-source activity and
cannot be ignored or denied. I want my MythTV.

(or 0.2...not exactly sure what their versioning is). If so, see if
these lines are in your /etc/modprobe.conf file:

alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv

If not, add them. I added those near the top of my modprobe.conf,
rebooted, and magically I had sound in myth.

If there is a DISH receiver out there with an activated serial port
that can be used for channel change, I sure haven't been able to find
it. Isn't that modem jack for pay-per-view stuff so the box can
"phone home"? The IR Blaster is probably you're best approach unless
you find out otherwise. You might try calling Dish's tech support,
tell them you have a Tivo and would like to get the serial port
enabled or get a model with the port already enabled. The worse
that'll happen is they'll say no or try to sell you a Dish/DVR combo.
And please, if you do happen to stumble across one, post it to this
list. A lot of Dish users would be thankful.

Out of curiosity, what is your hesitation for using the blaster?
There is some cost (you're looking at about $15 to have a pre-made one
shipped to you in the US), but that really seems to be the only major
disadvantage I've seen. *knock on wood* I have yet to have a single
dropped digit on my Motorola DCT2000 cable box. I know that while
dropped channels is a risk, it seems to be a problem that people also
occassionally experience using a serial port too. It probably has
more to do with the timings for changing the channel than anything
though. Regardless, I have found the IR Blaster to be a lot better to
use for changing channels on my cable box that I had anticipated it
would be.

(*shameless plug*) If you are thinking of using Fedora, Pete Stagman
and I have written up a guide showing you how to set up an IR Blaster
(the guide is written with those using Jarod's guide in mind, but it's
not exclusive to them). The examples shown are based around both
Motorola and DISH boxes. You can probably use it on non-Fedora setups
too, I just haven't had a chance to confirm it yet (I will remedy that
in the coming weeks). The nice thing about this setup is you can just
use the single instance of LIRC that you will already have installed
on your box in order to use your remote control.

Re: [mythtv-users] Linux Neophyte

As always, "it depends" If you are just wanting to learn enough to
set up a mythbox, then I would start with Jarod's guide
(http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php). It will be a good way to get
your feet wet, and you'll be able to learn a lot as you go. The
O'Reily books on Linux are good. I actually used the "Teach yourself
Fedora Core in 24 hours" series about 8 months ago (it's probably up
to Fedora Core 3 now). Even though it was distro specific, it gave me
a lot of insight on working with linux. I certainly wouldn't consider
myself as proficient as I am with windows, but I can now do most basic
tasks, and know enough about it that I can troubleshoot problems by
digging around online. For me at least, that's been more than enough
to get a stable mythbox going.

I have changed the location of the LIRC/IR Blaster guide Pete and I
wrote. The new URL is http://www.lircsetup.com (no clever points for
me, but still easy to remember). This should hopefully be a bit more
stable than my previous server. For those wondering, the guide is
centered around setting up an IR Blaster with MythTV and LIRC, but
doing so without having to compile a second instance of LIRC. Very
useful for any FC3 users since the kernel source isn't included. As
always, feedback/criticism is appreciated.

I echo these sentiments. I am not a coder, but I would certainly like
to think that most OSS projects are not soley based on developers.
I'll be the first to say that without them, the software, bug fixes,
etc...wouldn't exist, and they are certainly the heart and core of the
project. But what about those doing testing on different features?
Or working to track down the source/cause of bugs? Or writing
documentation for compoenents or usage of the software? Or even
answering other users' questions on the mailing list. I would
certainly like to think that all of these people are "giving something
back" to the software, even if they aren't coding it. I know devs are
busy, doing the coding in their spare time for no reward other than
usable software and the gratitude of others. And it must be
frustrating to hear people essentially say, "ya this is nice, but it
needs this too." I don't think this is at all bashing the software
itself (which nearly everyone on this list seems to love), but is
basically just asking those who do have the savvy/know-how to write
code to consider something that would make the software even better.
While the original poster have worded his request better, I would hate
for this entire project to gain a "code it yourself or go home"
mentality.

Re: [mythtv-users] Hauppauge PVR-250 IR dongle

I would suggest posting a comment for help in either the hauppauge
help forums or calling their customer support. If it was a warranty
or paid repair issue, they should send you a new IR receiver if there
is an incompatibility.

Not sure if you've fixed this or not, but try restarting mythbackend

Launch mythfrontend and see if that fixes it.

Re: [mythtv-users] no sound in live TV after changing kernel

not sure if these are in your modprobe.conf or not, but you might try
adding them near/at the top, rebooting and see if it fixes it:

alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv

You may try it with just one or the other as well.

You could also set up a symlink to mes3400.o and see what that does as well.

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-350 and ivtv - No sound

what happens if you add this near the top:

alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv

I would also re-order your modprobe stuff a little bit so it looks
more like this:

#TOP OF MODPROBE.CONF
alias eth0 e100
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
options snd-card-0 index=0
install snd-emu10k1...

Also, why do you have two soundcards installed?

Re: [mythtv-users] LIRC problems with the 350

My guess is because LIRC doesn't ever seem to like to load properly
under that kernel. Ever. You can modify your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
to try to get it to load properly. The problem is basically that the
device is actually /dev/lirc0, but LIRC is looking for /dev/lirc.
Making the rules file discussed in Jarod's guide doesn't work for me
under that kernel (it does work under 2.6.10 kernels, but not
2.6.9-1.724_FC3 for some reason). Here's a copy of my rc.local file:

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
ln -s /dev/lirc0 /dev/lirc
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ivtv
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe lirc_i2c

Sorry if these seems like a stupid response, but did your kernel get
upgraded when you did the dist-upgrade? If so, did you update your
kernel modules for you video card drivers (nvidia presumably?) and
ivtv?

Do you just get the audio problems in myth, or is it systemwide (try
playing a wav file when not it myth). One option would be to just put
system-config-soundcard and any appropriate settings for you in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local More importantly, is the card not working AT ALL
before running system-config-soundcard, or are the volume levels just
screwed up?

NOT getting analog cable if you have digital seems odd, unless they
have installed some kind of filter on your line. I know in our
neighborhood, all you have to do is open the neighborhood box (none
are locked in this area), plug yourself in, and you've got basic
analog cable. Take the filter that may or may not be there off, and
you've got the full package (less HBO, Cinemax, etc...). Not that
I've ever done this stuff...just know others who have. Basically,
once there is a cable connection going into your home, there should be
analog signal travelling down it unless your cable provider is (for
some stupid reason) intentionally blocking it. Though, with Comcast,
I'm sure the stupid reason part is there.

That sounds pretty much dead on (at least as how I've done it. Just
change the "config=" to whatever keystroke it should be. For
instance, when I wanted to change what my guide button did, I changed
my lircrc file so under the GUIDE button, it said "config=S" instead
of "config=0"

Nick,

A couple of things to check.

1) Is your script called "skychannel" or "skychannel.sh"?

2) Are your directory permissions where the script resides open the
entire way down? i.e. is each directory (/usr, /usr/local,
/usr/local/bin) set so everyone has read and execute permissions?
Additionally, does your script have it set for everyone to have
read/execute permissions?

3) Does your debug statement in your script generate log output when
calling via the command line?

4) Have you set the channel frequencies (it's in mythtvsetup). See
these posts:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/56565

Let me know if any of those help.

You can also remove any bad channels in mythtvsetup in the channel editor.

Re: [mythtv-users] LIRC problems in MythTV

If I was to shoot a guess, I bet if you look in /var/log/messages
you'll find that whenever you try to fire up /usr/bin/irw, you're
getting a message saying it can't open /dev/lirc or /dev/lirc0. Is
that there?

Re: [mythtv-users] remote control options

Quite simple. In your ~/.myhttv/lircrc file, look for whatever your
guide button is. Change it from what it is now (probably "config=0")
to "config=S" (without the quotes). That'll bring up the guide.

Can anyone here relate their experiences using IVTV v0.2? I'm using
FC3 w/ kernel 2.6.9-1-724_FC3 and was wondering if anyone was having
stability problems (or good experiences).

I used an xbox v1.6 (got it after the holidays) and soft-modded it

Presuming your DirectTV box actually has it's serial port enabled
(just because it's there doesn't mean it actually is functional),
that's about right. Your IR Receiver hooks into your PVR 250 and
captures signal from the remote. You then either find or create a
script that handles interpreting the signals from your remote into the
output your DirectTV needs to receive from the computer. Let myth
know where this script is (you specify the script to myth in
mythtvsetup under "Input Connections" in the "External Channel Change"
command part). From there, myth will take all the remote control
input (coming in through the PVR250's IR Receiver) and output it to
change your DirectTV receiver.

Re: [mythtv-users] "Steal This Show" John Markoff's response

Well, it is at least good to see that he wasn't pleased with the
outcome of the story. But, as he said the damage is done. No doubt
Congressman Dipshit had someone read him the article, and is drafting
legislation against it so he can have his 15 minutes.

I for one will welcome the creation of googlezon and its subsequent
domination of the New York Times. (for those unfamiliar, see

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-250 with included remote, or PVR-500 MCE and 3rd party remote?

If you're comfortable w/ the driver support for the PVR500, i'd say do
it. Just note the pvr250 has been around a lot longer, and support
for it is pretty solid in myth. I'm not sure what the latest ivtv
drivers look like concerning the pvr500, but you may have to do more
troubleshooting.

As far as remotes, the PVR250 remote is mediocore IMO. I'd suggest
getting a radioshack 15-2116 remote. It'll run you about $30-$40, but
is wonderful and well built. There's even a guide on how to get it
running in myth:

Re: [mythtv-users] Customizing Channels in MythTV

I lived on campus at the University of Arkansas. Our lineup was
different that the standard cable companies lineup for the rest of the
community. We just contacted Zap2It, who in turn contacted Cox (our
cable provider). Within about 1 - 1.5 weeks, our lineup was one of
the options listed for the zip code.

you probably do. Why don't you open up the lircrc file and see what
it's set up to control.

Very interesting points. For me, my decision is always on what gives
me the most control. It's not about keeping television producers in
business. Nor is it about worrying how to best compensate the
creators of intellectual property. People will always innovate and
create works for free or near-free. Do I think that making sure
creators receive some compensation is generally a good thing?
Absolutely. Do I think I should work my TV/music habits in such a way
that this is always insured? Absolutely not. Those who create,
produce and own much of the legal fiction known as intellectual
property in this country do not serve to look out for my interest (the
FOSS movement withstanding). Myself and those other consumers who
know that it is ok to record a TV show and skip commercials are the
only ones who I feel have my interests at heart. The potentially
glorious copyright system in the US, which in all my studies I have
found was originally set up to FIRST get ideas and works available to
the public, and THEN to compensate their creators, has become so
bastardized that I can't trust the government or the courts to protect
my rights as a consumer (yes, Fair Use is a right - at least until
March). We have let copyright holders create a system whe

There's nothing illegal about it where I live either, here in the US.
It is perfectly allowable for me to capture analog signals (or digital
signals converted to analog) via my capture card, store them on a
device, and then change them into a format which saves hard drive
space. If it wasn't Tivo, ReplayTV, Windows MCE, and the assortment
of cable company-provided DVRs would have been litigated into
oblivion.

Similarly, it's perfectly legal for me to rip a copy of a CD that I
purchased and store the music on my mythbox in a different format. If
having MP3s were patently illegal, then Apple, Creative, and any other
company selling equipment to play them on would have similarly been
sued.

The presence of those utilities is not indicitive of illegal
activities. Saying they do indicate something illegal is like saying
that having a network card in your mythbox is also wrong, since you
then could potentially trade your recordings over the internet.

[mythtv-users] Problems with Pause/Rewind and timer

Whenever I attempt to pause live TV, the timer saying "0:00 behind"
never increases. The same happens when I rewind. The show actually
rewinds, but the timer never increases to show how far I backed up.
This creates problems because I cannot fast-forward back to live-tv,
and am always stuck back as far as I rewound it. Anyone have a
suggestion as to the cause of this problem and how to possibly fix it?

Thanks.

[mythtv-users] "Couldn't find input: Composite 4 on card" error

Can anyone explain what this error means or how to resolve it? It
occurs no matter which input the card is set to:

2005-01-31 19:11:06 Channel::Open(): Can't open: /dev/video0
/dev/video0: No such file or directory
2005-01-31 19:11:06 Channel::Open(): Can't open: /dev/video0
/dev/video0: No such file or directory
Couldn't find input: Composite 4 on car

Similar error on tuner0:

/dev/video0: No such file or directory

so you want it to use something else to redord rather than the default
mythtv recorder? Not sure why, especially when you can just transcode
the video later. A good place to look would probably be the myth
source code.
