Mike,

When this happens, check the window you're running the frontend from,
you might find that it''s sitting there asking you to confirm
something about the uk_rt listings grabber! I get
this whenever I go into input connections, I just flip to the command
window, press enter
and off you go again.

[mythtv-users] Compiled/installed 0.17

2005-02-11 Thread Andy Whitworth
Well this evening went for a 0.16-0.17 upgrade and logged the
following funnies :-

MythWeb access to MythWeather data still broke for my (UK) location -
the days of week are incorrect - MSN datasource day1 == Sunday but
code assumes day1 == Monday, edited themes/Default/weather.php to
correct day of week - day name mappings and all is well.

Something about my existing Db setup caused the DVB EIT program guide
update code to try and insert everything against a channel id of 1000
- which failed. Eventually I trashed my existing Db and let 0.17 run
against a fresh(empty) Db and all was well.

Am now up and running with 0.17 - schweet.

made me think I had tried it already with an older snapshot which worked - it
was getting all a bit confusing!

Anyway, I copied the cx88-input.c over the one in the kernel source tree and

The problem was with this line:

copy the lircd file to ~/.mythtv/lircd

I had been running mythfrontend on login - when I ran from a bash shell I got
could not open /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc in the output. The doc says the

Most cable companies charge more for cable modem only service, ie, no

Hi Andy,

recording capability working but everything else worked out of the
box. Guess I'm just
lucky with my phone being flexible regarding what it will accept

none of them

[mythtv-users] Transcoding settings for DVB source

2005-01-28 Thread Andy Whitworth
Hi,

I've just edited commercials out of a DVB sourced program and the resultant
transcoded file size was about 3x the original!! So I looked at my transcoding
settings and changed the target coded to MPEG4 from RTjpeg. This results
in smaller file sizes i.e. less than the original rather than more :-)
BUT, the transcoded program seems to have forgotten that it's a widescreen
program and starts playing in 4:3 format. If I change the ratio to
16:9 manually
then it looks fine *but* I have to manually switch aspect ratio whereas the
pre-transcoded original would automatically detect and switch to 16:9.

Is there anything I can do to set transcoding to preserve the automatic
widescreen detection ?

Cheers,

Andy.

Re: [mythtv-users] Nova-T's

I used the stock 2.6.10 kernel patched with the video4linux DVB driver code.

Have you tried running the MAKEDEV.sh script after reboot (can't remember
what it's distributed with) ? Basically it uses mknod commands to create
the correct dvb/adapter directories/nodes. I used this as an interim step to
get the devices created and verify that my card was being recognised. I then
worked on getting udev setup correctly so that the script wasn't required.
I'd advise a similar approach!

Have you tried allowing full access to your video directory ?

chmod a+rwx your_video_directory

The error reported is a permissions one i.e. the file being referenced
exists but the permissions are not set correctly.

I've got the devices being created automatically under FC3 2.6.10 but
I had to do a bit of udev hacking around, specifically the permissions

I'm having problems getting my dvb devices to show up in FC3

installed the video4linux packages to give me the drivers required for

only get the following device after reboot, and mythtvsetup doesn't

Can anyone help. Hopefully I've provided everything needed to assist.

Re: [mythtv-users] Avermedia DVB-T remote

2005-01-24 Thread Andy Whitworth
You could run lircd in event mode :-

lircd --driver=dev/input --device=/dev/input/event3 -p 660 /etc/lircd.conf

Then compile in native lirc support into Myth, setup a ~/.mythtv/lircd
mapping file and off you go

On the DVB card, the Hauppauge Nova-T PCI card is pretty good, I got
one from PC World currently on sale at £50.

Andy.

 Hi,

I've recently setup mythtv, a lengthy process (certainly on an epia-m)
but at last it's all coming together. I have one last wish and that's to
get my remote control working with Myth. It's the controller that comes
with the Avermedia DVB-T TV card and I've had some minor success
already. By loading the ir_kbd_gpio I've found that the controller sends
events to /dev/input/event3. My question is how should I go about
 mapping these events to mythtv?

Currently the controller does have some effect over myth (up is down,
down is up, etc) but little else.

If anyone could offer any advice it'd be much appreciated.

 Kind regards
 Andy

BTW, if anyone's thinking of going for an Avermedia DVB-T (low profile)
card in the UK I'd recommend against it. While my standalone Freeview
box picks up everything the Aver barely picks up a thing - and that's
 with the latest firmware too.

Re: [mythtv-users] Skipping adverts in UK using DVB-T - supported ?

2005-01-20 Thread Andy Whitworth
My TV when in 'auto' mode often switches to/from 16:9 when the ad break appears
so I guess there is a physical change ? I think this would be a
useful detection
trigger to add to the list!

Andy.

Haven't updated my cvs version yet to try the new detection, but does
it also monitor for aspect ratio changes? Just noticed while watching
tv yesterday quite a few channels change aspect ratio when they switch
to the adverts (I'm in the UK).

In this situation it could be a very accurate way for detecting ads.

Is this a physical aspect ratio change or does the frame stay the same
ratio and have black bars on the top/bottom? I have a sample of a UK
broadcast that uses the black bars and will be trying to code up something
to detect that transition so it can be used to determine where commercials
start/stop. If you mean a physical frame aspect ratio change, then I'd
like to detect this at some point but don't have any sample recordings
to test with right now (I'm in the U.S. with analog cable).

Well it would be black bars on the side of the program if anything
rather than black bars on the top and bottom of the adverts.

In a DVB-T stream there are two ways of handling aspect ratios. For
simple 4:3 vs 16:9 it can be done with a simple flag. In that case
then the transmitted data is always the full picture area and the
flag tells the receiver what aspect ratio to use when displaying
the data - the resolution doesn't change, so would be 720x576 or
704x576 in the UK depending on the channel.

The other option is to use an AFD where a 16:9 picture is transmitted
and if the content is 4:3 then there are black bars on each side. There
is then an Active Format Descriptor (AFD) which indicates which part
of the transmitted picture to display. That allows more choice of
ratios but in the UK at least only 4:3 and 16:9 are used.

Some channels use AFDs in the UK and some use the simple flag. Most
of the AFD channels don't have adverts however, but I think there is
one that does - certainly Five was, but it may have changed recently.

I'm not sure how Myth handles those two cases however, or what you
see in the stream when you read it back from disk.

   FC3, Myth 0.16, MythWeb 0.16, mysql Ver 11.18 Distrib 3.23.58, for
   redhat-linux-gnu (i386)

I'm a little confused here. At first I thought it might be that php was
compiled with some part of the mysql support missing, but if it's
  packages, that should be fine.

The only other thing that comes to mind is the new SE Linux stuff that's
in fc3. Try turning that off (it's under security settings, I think),
  it'll require a reboot.

Re: [mythtv-users] Nova-t remote with linux 2.6

2005-01-19 Thread Andy Whitworth
Hi,

I got my Nova-t remote working with Myth last night after a couple of
days frustrating effort. I use Fedora Core 3 and kernel 2.6.10, lircd 0.7.
My Nova-t card is one of the newer conexant based models with the
remote receiver plugged into the back of the card. The remote is the
black/grey Hauppauge control.

What worked for my setup:-

1. Followed the instructions here:-
http://spamtastic.demon.co.uk/v4l/

2. Compiled lirc using the Other-/dev/input driver option
3. Run lircd as lircd --driver=dev/input --device=/dev/input/event2
-p 660 /etc/lircd.conf
4. Ensure myth is compiled with native lircd support (check settings.pro)
5. Enjoy.

With this setup I don't need a /dev/lirc device, just a /dev/lircd
pipe which lirc .make install
created but doesn't get recreated on reboot using udev. So at the
moment I've got a mknod
in /etc/rc.d/rc.local to create the pipe, change the permissions so
all can rw and then start lircd (params as above). There are '
better' ways of doing this and I'll be tweaking that next.

Hope this helps!

Andy.

 Hi,

I've been away from mythtv for a while but have now restarted mythtv
project./ I've got a Nova-t dvb card but can't get the remote to
work. It partly works, in as much as the buttons 0 through 9 deliver
some events to /dev/input/event0. So, for example when I press '1' on
the remote i get '' on the active terminal window. However,
evtest doesn't detect anything on any remote press (even the '1'
 button).

I expected that all events would be routed to event0 - but something
is obviosly preventing that and somewhat erroneously translating a
single key press into a 4 byte string.

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Cheers

[mythtv-users] Re: Skipping adverts in UK using DVB-T - supported ?

2005-01-18 Thread Andy Whitworth
Further to my comments below I actually tried recording a selection
of programmes last night from a couple of channels, the commercial
detection did pick stuff up on one of the programmes so it is doing
something ;-) When I played back the recording the system seemed
to get it right over 50% of the time! So all is not lost but I guess the
FF button is currently the way to go.

Or has anyone in UK got ad detection working using DVB-T ?

[mythtv-users] Help: getting lirc working under FC3 with a Hauppauge Nova-t DVB card

2005-01-16 Thread Andy Whitworth
Hi,

I've just spent the weekend getting MythTv up and running on a new Linux
build, it's been an 'interesting' task with a few challenges cropping up but
I've managed to get Myth running and I can watch/record and have a TV
guide.

I'm having no luck however getting the remote control supplied with the
nova-t working under lirc. Has anyone out there got the nova-t remote
working with lirc under FC3 ?

My setup:

Hardware:
P4 2.4Ghz
1Gb RAM
160Gb Maxtor Diamondmax 10 HDD
Hauppauge Nova-T DVB card

Software:
Fedora Core 3
2.6.10 kernel (with linuxtv DVB patches)
lirc-0.7.0.0 (source/compile installation)

Environment:
Surrey, UK - Crystal Palace transmitter

When running the lirc ./setup.sh configuration
I've tried both the Hauppauge hardware options as well as
the Other-Linux events (or whatever it's called) options
all with no success.

irw does nothing, irrecord also does nothing.

Help!!!

Andy.
