Re: [mythtv-users] Feature request / discussion - Record Button Behavior
On 12/2/05, Jeff Simpson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: snip I was flipping channels last night and came across a program already showing. As I'm watching it, I think this is really good, I want to record it! so I hit record, and keep watching. While it's recording, I go on mythweb, look up the program, schedule a later recording to get the whole thing, go into the frontend, delete the current recording, go back to live TV to continue watching it. Seems complicated when all I wanted to do was make sure I recorded the full program if it was on later. So here's the idea that I came up with: Option A). Multiple record buttons, users can map whichever one they want to the actual red circle on the remote. The standard button will be the same, immediately start recording the current program. The advanced record button will work as follows: Option B). Advance Record button: when you hit record (and there is guide data), it will tell you what the current program is, how long it is, and how far in you are. It will give you these options: - Record Now - Find and record a later showing - Cancel Find and record a later showing would have some kind of feedback where it would let you know if the show is on again and if it can be recorded. If it can, it will be, and if not, it will let the user know and allow them to still immediate record. snip Thoughts? How about a more general function of re-recording shows that are shorter than the length found in the guide data, with the exception of those under the LiveTV recording group. If you are watching LiveTV and hit record it changes the recording group to Default (under current svn). After the recording is finished, the start and end times could be compared to the times in the guide data (accounting for any pre and post time settings) to determine if the entire show was recorded. If not, it could be marked for re-record in a new column in the recordedprograms table, which would be checked each time the scheduler ran. If the new recording is made, then the old recording would be deleted. This would also work on shows that are split because of restarting the backend, which is admittedly a fairly rare event but does happen. It also allows you to immediately get the rest of the recording that you were interested in while watching LiveTV, while allowing it to be re-recorded in full when it is on again, all without adding any additional questions during the process. Watching a recorded or live tv show on my remote frontend works great, however the video preview on the Watch Recordings screen generates prebuffering pauses every few seconds resulting in jerky preview video. What could be causing the prebuffering? What is different about displaying fullscreen versus in the preview window other than xv being used? Re: [mythtv-users] Bottom-end MythTv Suggestions
Since I just went though building a new frontend, I thought I'd offer a few suggestions of my own. I bought an MSI K7N2GM2-LSR motherboard from newegg for $63 with shipping. This motherboard is an nforce2 with onboard sound and video and both svideo and rca out. It also has SATA. Newegg doesn't appear to carry it any more (I just bought it a month ago, but pricewatch shows ewiz carrying it at that price). I really like the motherboard and it works great. I would suggest a Athlon XP-M 2400+ or 2500+ mobile processor for about $80-$90 for low heat and reasonable cost, plus a CNPS7000b-ALCU Zalman heatsink/fan for $29 from Amazon.com for quiet operation. This would be for the best bang for your buck that I could determine. Good luck, Bob C Adam Pash wrote: Thanks for your replies. Everything makes sense, but there's still one thing... as is, I'm not sure how well my existing soundcard, video card, and motherboard are going to work. Actually, I know that the video card won't work, b/c it doesn't have any s-video or rca video outs. But I don't think that my motherboard will support a newer card, either. So I'm thinking... is there any combination of motherboard (with onboard sound, and ethernet), video card, and processor that anyone could recommend that would cost somewhere in the $100-$200 range that are well-supported? I have no concerns for hi-def, but I would like to transcode video, as disk space is somewhat of a concern. A little bit pricier than the other suggestions given, but the small case looks just like a DVD player, and Jarod's guide has specific instructions for the pundit. I've been extremely pleased with it so far Considering the Pundit includes a case and motherboard, it isn't really any more expensive (unless you don't need a case of course), and is about as cheap as you can reasonably create a system. It may not have all the room you'd want for a frontend/backend system though a lot of people seem to have been happy with it in that configuration. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is only one IDE channel, no SATA, so you can only fit one optical and one hard drive in the system and installing a PVR-150/250/500 may require some time with a dremel to get it to fit. There seems to be a lot of variability on people's happiness with the noise and quality of the video out from reading the list. Am I wrong in my perception? I am curios, when you stream mmpeg4 files, does it use as much CPU as when it is transcoding MPEG2 to MPEG4 on the fly? I doubt it would, but this would be a great reason for me to set up the transcoding feature =D The load on the cpu was the same whether it was streaming mpeg2 or mpeg4. There were a couple of differences in usage, however, that I didn't really notice until after I sent the email. I can not jump forward in the mpeg4 stream with the +1min button - it simply starts at the beginning of the recording again with an error in the logs (don't recall the error at the moment). I don't have any problem with this in mpeg2 streams. Secondly, the quality of the mpeg4 streams that were transcoded from mpeg2 by mythtv were fairly poor with a lot of blockiness. The original mpeg4 transcoded files look decent on a monitor and look completely fine on a tv, however re-encoding them again on the fly, even at 1000kbs, really brings out the flaws and makes it far worse. The mpeg2 files still look good, however. Overall, I wouldn't use it to watch recorded files on my local network. DSmyth, when it works well, is a better solution for me there. I tried streaming a DVD rip of Shrek (done with MythDVD, 'good' quality, xvid), via the cli and it worked great. The quality was very good even at the 300kbs video and 64kbs audio that I set it to.
