[mythtv-users] freeze when switch to record
Hello All, I have this EXTREMELY annoying problem. I have an Avermedia M179 card using the ivtv modules. I can record fine if I do a cat /dev/video0 /tmp/somevid.mpg but when I try to record in Myth the moment it starts to record the screen goes with all straight vertical lines and no sound. If I start the mythfronted from terminal, I can see that it is bitching about invalid file handle when opening /var/lib/mythtv/blahblah... and the name of the file is really long. Any ideas on this one?? As this has happened before and I never found out how the problem got fixed (one day it just started working, on another box). I cruised the http://www.wilsonet/mythtv site and looked under his tips and tricks section and he recommended setting the mythfrontend to run setuid root, I did that and all is well And the performance on the box is WAY better, what a difference!! Any ideas, TIA I didn't respond to your other post ( http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/156907?#156907 ) last night because I couldn't figure out what you're talking about and was hoping someone else would interpret your question better than me. So, what do you mean by, i only get a blank screen when recording? Recording is done by the backend and the backend does not affect the screen (the mythfrontend /is/ the screen). Do you mean, When playing back recordings, I only see a blank screen? Or, perhaps, My system records only black with no audio, and I've verified this by playing a recording on another computer with another media player? Or, something different? Mike ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users Hello Mike, Thanks for getting back to me. I fully know how mythtv works, backend/frontend, etc.. In my frustation, shorter emails go out, ya know? Anyway, when your watching tv and you select m, it takes you to the schedule and show the current channel in the upper right corner (if that's your option). Then when you hit enter and decide to record that running show, it will change to recording (and watching) the selection you just made because when your recording you can't watch another channel, etc. It's at that point that my screen goes black, no sound no anything. I can hear the drive crunching, look in the directory that the recording is going into, and watch it grow, just it is only recording a black screen, no video, no audio. I have started mythfrontend with -v all option and looking at that see that it is bitching about audio rates that it wants and cant have and that it is dropping frames, so I suspect that it's a sound issue. I had it configured with the onboard via sound card, then installed a sound blaster live, still same results. Sound works fine for watching tv and all other sound functions. Also, if I run cat /dev/video0 /tmp/someshow.mpg, it records beautifully with sound, etc. I must have some setting wrong in my myth record options but this is a pvr-350 and initially thought I had something wrong with the ivtv modules. I have AMD 3000+, FC4, 512MB RAM, 2.6.13-1352 kernel with all options installed as per wilsonet.com/mythtv. Not real familiar with ivtv, I thought that maybe it was trying to record using a different device node, whatever. At this point I am really frustrated, any thoughts? I suspect that your blank screen is because the system cannot properly display out through the nvidia card. I think that live TV would use the PVR350' output directly: no further processing required. Please do 2 things: First: look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and see if the following snippet exists (it will be well down the lisiting), drmOpenDevice: minor is 0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999) drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999) drmOpenDevice: Open failed drmOpenDevice: minor is 0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999) drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999) drmOpenDevice: Open failed big snip (II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled Second: See if you have a node /dev/dri/card0 I think that this is a udev problem. The node /dev/dri/card0 does not get created. About 4 days ago I found a web-site about udev development which had a changelog comment from about March, about some change (removal) to the handling of dri. I cannot find that page nowit is not any of the main udev pages. But it is clear that /dev/dri/card0 does not get created at any time by udev or xorg or whatever. And dri seems to have no known major-minor number allowing creation through a mknod or udev rule. Help please. Geoff R.
