[mythtv-users] No TV or Video with SVideo

2006-01-30 Thread Dave Bixler
I finally got my video card to use the SVideo Out on my nVidia Ti4200.
However, although the GUI shows up as expected, when I play live TV or
any type of video (like AVI), nothing shows up. The screen is just
blue. It's not hung as I can hit escape to get back to the menu. I
tried searching the list first but wasn't able to locate anything that
helped out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm attaching my
xorg.conf file that I use for the SVideo.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Blue instead of video usually means that the video is being displayed
on another screen. Common solution is to physically disconnect
any other screens you may have plugged in at the time X loads, since
most cards will detect these screens, even if you don't have them
defined in xorg.conf.

That's very possible. I'll have to try this as soon as I get home
tonight. One other question. Is there a way to specify which screen
that myth should be using to display the GUI and/or the Video output?

Where are you seeing this deal? I'd love to pick up another one. This

Sorry, can't help you with the MythTV config and LIRC, as I just manually

Re: [mythtv-users] Potential IPTV additions for Myth

2006-01-26 Thread Dave Bixler
An awesome idea if I must say so -- that is if I completely understand
what you're proposing :).

Robert Johnston wrote:
IPTV uses SAP+SDP for stream announcement and RTP+RTCP/RSTP (It seems
that RTSP is used for VOD/PPV, and RTP is used for regular channels)
for the actual video streams. All over multicast (Which is supported
in all linux kernels from 2.2+).

 SAP/SDP description details: http://www.faqs.org/rfc/rfc2327.html

 SAP default announcement address: UDP:224.2.127.254:9875

 RTP defined in http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1889.html

 RSTP defined in http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2326.html

VLC can be used as an example SAP/SDP provider, and to provide RTP or
RTSP (In version 0.8.3+) streams (Use the wizard, or the Open
dialog, and choose to Stream output, and VLC will announce the
SAP/SDP and stream to a multicast port of your choosing). This means
you don't actually *need* an IPTV provider, as you can be one yourself
 on your local network.

I *think* that the existing code for DBox2 can be copied and re-purposed.

The only thing that would be missing is the code to grab the Program
guide (Which, I presume, is mentioned as a HTTP url in the SDP
description, and is in a reasonably standard format, as it's made so
differing set-top boxen can all auto-configure to pick up the correct
 lineup and information)

I believe, with this integrated into Myth as another tuner(s) (And if
we can find the Program Guide data, the equivalent of a EIT program
guide provider) we can make Myth a formidable open-source IPTV STB,
and as that is where TV is moving, it would be an early foot in the
 door.

While I realise we have a feature freeze for 0.19, how would people
(users and developers) feel about trying to get this into 0.20?

[mythtv-users] Soundblaster Live! PCI 7.1

2006-01-25 Thread Dave Bixler

Believe me, no apologies are necessary. I feel like a complete
idiot... and a frustrated, but perseverant, idiot :). I think I may
misunderstood how things work.

What does the audio capture, the TV card or the Sound Card? I assumed
that the sound card performed the capture, and hence, the need for the
line-out to line-in patch cable.

Another thing, when I run kmix I can view both the SB card and the card
labeled as BT878. On the BT878 page, I can change what I think is the
record input. Which should this be set to, TV or Mic/Line?

Thanks again,
Dave

well, if you are absolutely sure that you have a connexant, then yeah
you should be loading the cx88 module... but if you literally get a good
picture AND sound out when you are watching live TV, I highly doubt you
are using the wrong module there. I would be more wary of checking you

didn't check maybe it's there. Perhaps for live TV you have the
recording volume at an acceptable level and for the default recording
profile you have the recording volume turned down way too low? Another
thing is to try alsamixer and check where capture is set. Something
like alsamixer -v all

line in). My apologies if you've done such things already. I know when
I first started up my system, I was happy to hear sound in Live TV but

people post feature requests?

The two areas where I'm actively searching for help are:

  * MythWeb's music section needs to be completely rewritten
  * MythWeb's video section needs to be completely rewritten

(I don't really use either of these features of MythTV, so they've been
low on my priority list)

I'm also hoping that someone will send me an updated WAP theme for SVN
(hopefully before the .19 release). Its usual maintainer is really busy
and hasn't told me if he'll be able to do it or not.

I'd also like to get MythStreamTV integrated into the official code now
that MythWeb has a semi-modular design, though I'll likely let its
current author work out those details.

And of course, much of MythWeb still needs to be rewritten to use
semantic markup with better CSS support, but I'll likely tackle that
myself after .19 is released.

Well, if you're streaming to the browser you can always use WinAmp to
play the file. I don't want to start a flame war here, but even though
I'm an devout Java engineer with Sun certifications, I'd never use an
applet to do anything -- I really despise even loading them when I
visit a web site and generally keep Java completely disabled in Firefox
and IE. I'm just not sure you'd really even need a client other then
WinAmp or the plethora of available stream players out there if you
were doing direct streaming from something like slimserver. Just my

Better yet, how about a web based streaming audio player with playlist

anybody with a flash (90% probably have it anyways) or java enabled

You are correct, but there are other Linux based players like zinf that
can also stream :). However, I'd assume the goal is to stream from
MythTV to the external player so whatever player you choose is up to
the user.

I "think" slimserver has a command line interface, but don't quote me

as well, I don't know how people feel about integrating existing
software into the projects. I too am a Java engineer, though I have
experience in many different languages. Just thought I'd point out an
already existing piece of software that might make writing the music
section a bit easier.

Slimserver is awesome, but is a perl-based self-contained webserver with
on-the-fly format conversion.

Would be interesting to see something like that integrated with mythweb,
though... Would also make video streaming a lot easier. Would probably
end up being better served as a separate project with a mythweb plugin
for it (like I hope mythstream will eventually be, though this could
supersede mythstream in functionality)

Re: [mythtv-users] AC97 in only one speaker

2006-01-25 Thread Dave Bixler

The symptom I had when I was running my diamond monster mx300 was near
perfect sound in one speaker, and a feedback like sound in the other
with all static which grew steadily louder. I've literally spent DAYS
on this one before throwing in the towel.

brain on this one. A new test I tried, when running TvTime and also
running "aplay /dev/dsp" at the same time and muting the line in (thus
only playing the recorded audio), it DOES play in both speakers and
there are no "snaps" "crackles" or "pops" in the audio, just a mild
hiss. However, once I switch to the TV in MythTV, it goes to one
speaker and the rice crispy effect is back. Anyone with any ideas let
me know. I'll try anything at this point.

Re: [mythtv-users] mythtv setup

The reason you have sound twice is because you need to mute the line
in. Try kmix. Also make sure to turn on recording for the line in as
well.

[mythtv-users] Strange Audio Behavior - Static in One Speaker

2006-01-22 Thread Dave Bixler
I've been searching the lists for the last few days trying to find out
what I may have done wrong to cause the behavior that I'm experiencing
with no luck so I finally decided to ask for help here.

Everything is working very well and my system is stable. I can watch TV
using the TV Viewer in Redhat FC4 and if I un-mute the line in, audio is
flawless. Sound/music also plays flawlessly.

So, I have the patch cable from the Hauppauge WinTV Go Plus to the line
in of my Diamond Monster Sound audio card. When I run MythTV and select
Watch TV, it fires up fine. However, only the right speaker has audio.
The left speaker starts having a tiny amount of static. This static
then starts getting louder about every second preceded by a small pop
sound. Each time, it's as if the volume of the static is doubled until
it becomes so loud it just distorts horribly. If I use kmix and slide
the balance all the way to the right speaker, I still hear the audio
from the TV card fine. If I slide it all the way to the left, it's pure
static. Does anyone have ANY suggestions whatsoever? I'm including
potential hardware info at the end of this message and if I've forgotten
anything, or can include additional information, please let me know.
I'm dying to have this working, it's such a sweet application!

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I think I have a very similar problem to yours except that I have TV audio on
the left hand side. I'm still testing my problem and trying to find a
solution. My findings so far:
- if I unmute line in, audio is perfect with tvtime
- if I mute line in, I get sound from the left speaker in myth. However, sound
from the right speaker is not simply static, it is recording form the mic!
Yes, that's what is happening: left input is line-in, right input is from the
mic at the same time! Please check if this is your case, too. I have two mic
plugs, one in the front, one on the rear side of the machine, so if you
happen to have a similar PC, you might need to also select the correct mic in
kmix to check this.
- I can reproduce the "pop" sound getting louder, can't remember which setting
influences this in kmix, but by playing around with controls I could easily
get rid of this problem. I cannot check this right now, as a longer recording
is in progress on my box.
- the problem does not seem to be related to myth however: if I eg. record
sound from line in with krecord, the same thing happens: the left side is
recording from the line input, the right side from the mic.

I suspect the problem is that the sound driver is incompatible with the mixer
circuit in the integrated sound card. My motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X-X
(nforce2 chipset). Recording works perfectly under Windows, at least.

I have no idea where to go next, already tried google, without success. But
I'm not an expert in Linux...

Thanks for the feedback. I tried what you suggested, but the mic does
not seem to be on the other channel. Granted, this card has several
inputs on the board itself, so it's completely possible that one of
those are being used. I tried changing the settings from mic1 to mic2
in kmix but it didn't seem to matter. I do think that what you've said
about our problems possibly being the same is correct.

Another thing that I tried was enabling the microphone as record. I
fired up MythTV and then spoke into the mic. What came out of the left
channel was my voice, but then the right channel (again) started to
degrade. However, what I noticed was that my voice was echoed into
that channel as well as the static, like a feedback loop.
