Re: [mythtv-users] Mythtranscode does nothing.

2005-10-06 Thread James Hansen
A segfault signifys that the application is trying to write to an area
of memory outside of it's allocated "segment".

Basically, this should never happen, and points to a problem in the
application :(

Suprisingly enough I just bought a random Dlink 802.11G Wireless USB

reason using Samba to copy all my MP3's from my Windows machine took
forever and a day, yet when downloading from the internet it flys.
Guess I am lucky.

I agree with the remote backend, I am only using my old P3 machine and
it is very very loud and it isnt easy to find a quiet replacement CPU
Cooler for it anymore.

You think that's bad, my first 3DFX card (Cheap brand of Riteous 3D
card) would overheat after about 30 seconds of gameplay (the original
quake).

Couldn't actually get a heatsink on the GPU, so I had to put the whole
PC outside on the window ledge :)

[mythtv-users] Wireless or 10/100 BaseT?

2005-10-05 Thread James Hansen
When using a seperate back/front end for mythtv, is it possible to have
these running across a reasonable wireless connection?

I'm talking about watching an averagely encoded file. If not, could I
use an old 10baseT ethernet card, or do I have to order a new 100mbps one?

Just curious really :)

Re: [mythtv-users] Channel Hopping

2005-10-05 Thread James Hansen

Lee wrote:

There was a recent lengthy (and somewhat heated) thread in the dev list
about this. The technical reason for the delay is because the system
has to do the following things when changing a channel on "Live TV":

1) Tune the channel.
2) Start encoding the feed.
3) Store the file.
4) Decode the file.

Each of these steps takes a little time. If you don't do them, you lost
the ability to pause or rewind Live TV, which is one of the sexy things
about a PVR.

I agree with all of this but, part of this problem is the perception
that it takes a long time...
On my Tivo, using an external DVB-T box, the channel change takes
about the same time
as the Mythbox but the Tivo/DVB-T have something happening on the
screen all the the time,

which makes it seem faster...
I.e if Myth got on with changing the channel, but 1 second into the
process it popped up
'Changing channel' message on the OSD and then another 1 second later,
it popped up

'To Extreme Sports'... the delay would seem much shorter...
As opposed to the screen just freezing, sitting there for what seems
like an eon, before

suddenly changing channel...

Lee

Absolutely! That's exactly it. The thing about beos was that although
it wasn't actually much faster than any other operating system, the UI
thread had quite a high priority. This meant that it never felt like
the machine itself was sluggish, and made it far easier to accept that
certain actions took a few seconds.

Just purely an onscreen message and would make myth seem far more fluid.

If I get some time I may have a look at the source and see how tricky
this is going to be.

Re: [mythtv-users] mpeg decoder video card?

Not really able to answer your question, apart from to say that even on
a monitor, moving text (e.g. credits) is never very clear..

If anyone has a solution to this, I'd also be very interested to hear it :)

Hi,

I was wondering if the output quality is better if I use a video card with
mpeg2 decoding, instead of one without.

I use a PVR-150 for encoding, and a GeForce4 MX440 with S-Video out for
output, but I imagine that the decoding is done in software?

Overall the video quality is good. It's a little soft, I'd like to have it
sharper, and also it's quite noticeable if, for example, credits are
scrolling by on the screen... that certainly causes some jerkyness, I guess
quickly scrolling text doesn't come out very good. And I was wondering if
decoding was done in hardware on the card, if stuff like that would be of
better quality.

Having said that, what video cards have mpeg2 decoding? I know the PVR-350
has it, but that's also a capture card. Are there output-only video cards
with mpeg2 decode, which don't cost an arm and a leg?

Is there a good software alternative? Should I apply some filters? Is there
a way to improve the sharpness and also not get the jerkyness on stuff like
scrolling text?

Thanks for any help.

You will need to recompile myth which is easy enough (source installed
to your hd anyway), but more importantly you'll need to add the dvb
drivers to your kernel.. which should simply be a case of downloading
the www.linuxtv.org dvb drivers and apps archives along with the
Knoppmyth install.

You could also install a 2.6 kernel which has the dvb drivers already
built in, but I personally had several packages break when I did this.
YMMV, but if you have the same problems - this would probably cause you
to need more files / information from the net to solve these issues.

I used this for reference:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1357&highlight=dvb

If you do this, check what frontend driver your DVB card uses though
because I had to install a different kernel entirely. I needed a patch
for the relatively new mt352 frontend that my Avermedia card has, but
could only find it for 2.4.26 and not 2.4.25 which Knoppmyth has.

Hmm.. Does knopmyth handle DVB-t cards?

[mythtv-users] Myth install WITHOUT the internet..

2004-12-15 Thread James Hansen
I know.. Its crippling, and in this day and age almost unthinkable but
does anyone think I could manage it? I'd be burning CDs and ferrying
them back and forth? :)

Oh, and I'll be using DVB listings to get program data, as I don't have
the internet at home..

Any suggestions as to where/how I might start?

The VisionPlus that Scan have?
As far as I know they are supported. I haven't actually got any yet
but I am going to be ordering some soon unless I discover some reason
why I shouldn't.
They seem to more popular in Australia than here from what I've seen
so they should work - people have certainly mentioned them on this
list. They are listed at http://www.linuxtv.org/download/dvb/CARDS
as well.

How does it compare to a Hauppauge Nova-T as I have the non-remote on
backorder with Scan, but these seen allot cheaper.

Indeed. It's hard to justify paying for the Hauppage, Nebula or
Pinnacle cards if the Twinhan one is going to work. The others might
have better Windows software but I don't care about that.
My main concern is actually which card is going to cope best with
a poor signal - my old Pioneer OnDigital box has a lot of trouble
with one of the Muxes and I'm hoping that a modern card will be a
bit better.

[mythtv-users] DVB in the UK (EPG)

2004-12-09 Thread James Hansen
I've read a number of posts stating how poor the EPG broadcast with the
DVB signal is, and that everyone uses the ukrt (radio times) list. My
problem is i dont have internet access at home to download these
listings, so my question is, is the broadcast EPG really that terrible
to the point that it is unusable?
If not then i'll go out and buy a DVB card tomorrow :)
