Re: [mythtv-users] Attractive cases and cheap DVD burners

2005-11-13 Thread Kevin Saenz
Well I'm almost getting the nerve to actually buy some hardware and geta myth working. I'm still stumbling over which case I want. I've decided
it needs to be full-height (I want room for lots of cards, and I'mworried about overheating, and anyhow there is enough space in my TVcabinet so why not). It definitely needs to be black, because everything
else I have is black, and it has to look smart enough to 'fit in'.I'm coming round to thinking that the nicest case out there is theAccent HT-400 ( http://www.arisetec.com/products/HT-400.htm
) since itis full-size, well-designed, comes with built in IR hardware and anattractive panel to mount an VFD behind. It's not cheap, though. A closesecond seems to be the Ahanix D.Vine 5. I've looked at a few cases by
Silverstone and I just don't think they look as nice (subjective, obviously). Does anyone have any really good or bad reports about any ofthese cases I should take into account?Sorry I don't find that attactive. It looks clunky, too much space. no lcd display.
It has too much unused real-estate. They do not look like or suit my home theater system

[mythtv-users] help with migrating from Mandrake 10.0 to Gentoo

Hi all,

I would like some help with migrating Mythtv 0.18 from Mandrake to

would like to know why.
The hadware I have is

I can get the dvb card working using kernel 2.6.3 and linuxtv modules.

I am not sure if it's bloatness in mandrake but my HDTV play back is a little jumpy and
I get squeaks and pixels jumping across the screen.

My plan is to install Gentoo 2005.1. Can anyone help me in building gentoo so that it works
with my HDTV card? I don't know the difference between Twinhan VisionPlus DVB-T and
Divco VisionPlus DVB-T cards are they one in the same?
last time I built the gentoo box and configured the DVB card I didn't get a
/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
directory structure but instead I got
/dev/dvb.adapter0.frontend0

I don't understand why, and mythtv, mplayer, xine could not find the card or the stream.
I would ultimately like to smooth my dvb, and dvd playback.

Thanks

Re: [mythtv-users] help with migrating from Mandrake 10.0 to Gentoo

2005-09-27 Thread Kevin Saenz

As far as your device information is concerned, that may be a symlink,go to /dev and do an ls -al /dev/dvb.adapter0.frontend0 it may tell
you if it is pointing to another device entry.
the problem was that when i ran a ls -la in /dev

dvb.adapter0.frontend0 was a dev file, it wasn't a symlink. also there was no /dev/dvb directory this really
scared me. I could see the delay taking ages, with my wife and kids nagging me for their DVDs, Movies,
and favorite shows to come back on line.

Re: [mythtv-users] How to fix Movie posters on FE

2005-09-14 Thread Kevin Saenz
Backend and frontend can coexist on the one machine happily.
If you have like a pxe boot ability you could run frontend and load up
the shares using either nfs, smb, or any other sharing technique.
I'm assuming here that the backend and the frontend are on seperate machines

Correct.

and that the backend and the frontend have at least one nfs share both can write to.
Correct. However /root/.mythtv/mythvideo is not one of them. It has not been set up in the exports file.

What does it say in the setting for the movie poster location?
On both locations '/root/.mythtv/mythvideo'

Is location on the nfs share?
Yes, but it's a hidden directory.

Also, what user does your mythtv run as?
MythTv

Does the directory exists that the frontend has in the setting box?
I'm not sure as it's hidden andthis is an Xbox FE?

Re: [mythtv-users] Compiling Mythtv with DVB

2005-09-07 Thread Kevin Saenz
Which kernel version are you using? The kernel's DVB code is reasonably
up-to-date, so if you're using a fairly recent 2.6 kernel, you probablydon't need to compile in linux-dvb separately.
I was using 2.6.12-r9 I think, and linuxtv and dvico would not patch the kernel
I would experience errors. So I ended up using the vanilla kernel. The problem
I found was that when I loaded mythtvsetup and selected dvb, I got a message
saying it could not locate the directory or file. I ran ls in /dev and foud the
following structure

/dev/dvb.adapter0.frontend0
/dev/dvb.adapter0.audio0
etc

There was no /dev/dvb directory.

I have had success with Mandrake 10.0 community and linuxtv-dvb-1.1.1. So I reinstalled
Mandrake10.0 and recompiled linuxtv-dvb against the kernel. I downloaded, and extracted mythtv-0.18, ran ./configure --enable-dvb --dvb-path=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1/ then ran qmake
mythtv.pro http://mythtv.pro then make and make install. The DVB path should be the path to the linux include files. I don'tthink that's the same as the linux-dvb source files. If your kernel is
2.6.12 or later, you can (and ./configure will) point to the kernelsource tree: /usr/src/linux/include. If your kernel is earlier, youmustn't include the kernel source directly - copy just the dvb stuffsomewhere else, and include that.

I found out that ./configure --enable-dvb --dvb-path=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1
would not add the dvb instruction set. I modified settings.pro

# DVB supportCONFIG += using_dvbDEFINES += USING_DVBINCLUDEPATH +=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1
and now I can watch HDTV :)

as a standard user I ran mythtv-setup and configured the capture card I selected dvb and the message I get is recompile with dvb support.
Where have I gone wrong?Have you tried doing this as root? Also, have you confirmed that yourDVB card is working using e.g. tzap? Check out Martin Smith's Myth/DVBset-up guide at:

I don't like running applications as root, and prefer not to. I have reset the security
settings to allow all users to run or access DVB

This is from using a stage3 install mind you...Oh - and check that the kernel modules for the DVB card are being loaded

H is this after installing dvico or linuxtv? I have bloated my kernel image out to include the dvb-t drivers.

Wow impressive hardware. What distro were you using? so that I won't use it.
When you installed linux did you select the smp kernel option? What
window manager did you use? What ripping software were you using to
rip DVDs?

Because when I rip dvds using the myth interface. I don't go and watch
a show in myth.

Funny you are comparing 2 different hardware. Why haven't you got MCE
running on the dual PIII? I have Myth running on XP2800 with 512 meg
of ram and a fusion HDTV card, with Audigy2 card. I don't have any
problems with viewing TV, or dripping my dvds or music.

Your problem is laughable you are comparing apples and oranges. If we
were to value your point of view compare apples with apples.

 Hi,

Actually I'll throw in some useful facts. I did have
a dual PIII-550 system with 2gigs of ram running
mythtv with a software encoder card. I found from a
system perspective that I could get good live tv off
 the following specs:

 MPEG4 encoding
 bitrate 4000 (scaled)
Capture at: 320x240 (?don't remember these settings)
 mpg audio encoding, quality 7
 (no features turned on)

If my system wasn't loaded then I could do live
TV/pause/etc. The OSD was a little slow to pop up.
Screen wise, I would see Mpeg4 artifacts. Now, please
bear in mind that this system was also my server
(file, web, mysql, and development box). By Nicing
-19 my mythbackend and making sure i didn't load up
too many processes things were okay. However, if I

lmao.

However, if I
tried to do a compile or rip more then 1 DVD at a time
(all at nice +19) then the system would stutter all
over the place. I also noticed that I could run
RTJPEG with out much cpu loading on this machine...

Stupid question why are you running mythtv in root? why are you
symlinking a directory to / ? that is like creating a directory in
windows and shortcutting it to c:\ You are not running windows here.
:) set your system to autologon as a gumby user, and autolaunch
mythfrontend.

do you have mythbackend file in /etc/init.d?
what is the file's settings? is it executable? if not then chmod +x
mythbackend will help.

if you run chkconfig --list can you see mythbackend there? if so is activated?
if not all you need to do is run
chkconfig --add mythbackend 3456 or something like that I haven't used
redhat variants for a while.

Thanks.. but no cigar..

Tried that, rebooted and still has problems.

I created a symlink to /root/.mythtv in // and it still does the same thing.

When I run 'service mythbackend status' it returns mytbackend (pid 3647) is
running...'

and returns me to the command prompt.

I've had something similar happen. When you run it as a service, is
your mythbackend service still running? When I run 'service
mythbackend status', I usually get a 'pid file exists, but mythbackend
is dead' message. When that happens, I find out it's because
mythbackend is looking for its settings in //.mythtv/ instead of
/root/.mythtv. I created a symlink called /.mythtv/ that points to
/root/.mythtv and that seems to solve the problem for me.

You need 2 tuners. Does your card have 2 tuners? If so, you may not
need a second card. I say may because you still need to make it work
with both tuners.

How would you tell if I have more than one tuner in the card? I know

Re: [mythtv-users] Why 2 cards for PIP?

2005-04-11 Thread Kevin Saenz
I can understand why this user would be confused. That you need 2 tuners
is an artifact of Myth's particular implementation of PiP -- watching two
different live broadcasts at once. An odd interpretation for a program
where the whole idea is not to watch live broadcasts at all.

Original PiP in TV sets, in fact, was single-tuner. You used it to watch
a live broadcast in a box while watching a signal from something else like
a VCR. (If the VCR had a tuner you could watch 2 live broadcasts.)
2 tuner PiP was the 2nd generation of PiP.

No I never had a vcr configured anywhere near the Mythtv server.
the only thing I had attached to the tv that displayed Mythtv was a
dvd player, and FM radio.

Last year my set up was.

In lounge room
80cm LG TV
LG Home theater pack (includes little speakers, dvd player, and radio)
Computer system (AMD 2800+, 512 Meg RAM, 80Gig HDD, Fusion DVB card, NIC)
belkin switch/hub

Kitchen
Hp pavilion ze4103s

Study

2x Computer systems (same as above without dvb card)

I could watch tv using mythtv in the lounge room leave it running, and
walk into the study activate mythfrontend and what another channel,
while recording another show using mythtv.

earlier this month I rebuilt the box after my move I accidently called
up PIP but I can't remember the key I pressed I am not sure if it's
Myth or mplayer related.

I don't think you should ever need PiP once you embrace the DVR vision,
or if you need it, it would be extremely rare. Almost all TVs made recently
have it anyway, so I have never felt it should be a priority in Myth, 2 tuners
or not.

I would like to have to ability to watch two seperate shows without
the need to purchase another dvb. PIP can be handy and the TV set
doesn't have PIP capability. so it is handy

Re: [mythtv-users] www.d1.com.au

2005-04-06 Thread Kevin Saenz
Well first of all getting a maintenance plan to plan for issues like
this DST issue. Then you gotta have a distributor to get you parts
for cheap. Then you have to have a standard way to get people setup
with accounts through zap2it and correctly configure their machines
(setup wizard that maybe runs from another working windows machine and
configures the linux machine mysql database) (or maybe some sort of
friendly wizard) (or you configure it all for them - they provide
email info and address). Also you need a standardized distro that is
stable on your hardware, and will provide little to no hiccups

Why a zap2it account? they have their own server which hmc downloads
channel information from. that is why there are 2 tv_grab_au scripts
around one looks at the xml pages from d1.com.au and the other is
capable of downloading from 2 sites. ninemsn.com.au and d1.com.au.

I think their market is the Australian consumer, and zap2it doesn't
have channel information for any states or postcodes in Australia.

Well, I've had software that wasn't very stable on linux, I've had
software that brought linux to a crawl, software that consistently
froze windows and now I've managed to find a package that routinely
freezes linux - Myth. The box is a combo FE/BE and isn't lacking for
resources (AMD64 3800+, 1G RAM, 750G SATA, 20G IDE for OS, PVR-350 for
encoding, nVidia 6600 GT for tv-out) and was actually running like a
champ (recording one show, flagging another while we decoded flac to
different players) with no hiccups (maybe 40-50% CPU usage) until just
recently. I added a new sound card (Turtle Beach Riviera) so I could
get optical spdif and the setup was about as simple as they come.
However, now I'm having issues with myth freezing the box. The box is
not under load - running around 5-15% - but pausing, rewinding ffwding
all have the ability to freeze the box (though more often its rw/ff).
Someone please tell me that there is an explanation for why this is
happening. How is myth taking down this box?

[mythtv-users] converting mythdvd transcode to smaller files

2005-03-15 Thread Kevin Saenz
Hi all

I would like to convert the dvds that I transcode from the large 4gig
files to smaller files what would be the best tool to ues? I think it
could be between mencoder and transcode. Where could I get some good
doco on using the tools to convert the .vob files to avi or mpg?

Thanks

Re: [mythtv-users] Is mythTV ready for prime time?

2005-03-14 Thread Kevin Saenz
After fighting with database issues on Suse 9.1, I switched to
KnoppMyth, which supposedly auto-installs all the prereqs and sets up
the database. Yet it cannot connect to the master backend
database.

I'm throwing in the towel. Looking at the archives of this list, it
appears that this tool is still packed with gotchas, one complication
after another. Does anyone else share the same thoughts, or am I just
having unusual difficulties?

I threw in the towel with Suse9.0 and 9.1 (I was testing Suse as place
of employment is a Novell house). There are a few people who have had
success with using mythtv on suse.

I was thinking of using knoppMyth the only question that I has was
does it support dvb? So far I have not found an answer to that.

I used Mandrake because I moved away from RH, and I read that it has a
little more support for most codecs. I am not entirely happy with
Mandrake but at least it works.

I have been using MythTV 0.16 for half a year now and I am transcoding most
shows.
However two days ago transcoding has stopped working. Most shows are set to
automatically transcode, but they dont anymore.
If I select Begin transcoding from the I menu on a show, transcoding
does not start. The menu entry does not even switch to Stop transcoding as
it used to.
If I press X while viewing a show, the prompt stating that transcoding
starts does show, but the show is not transcoded.

Does anyone have a clue where to look for a solution ?

Re: [mythtv-users] Can no longer start transcoding

2005-03-14 Thread Kevin Saenz
It depends on your switchs you have activated.
run a mtd --help it might give you some switches.

I know that when I was playing with 0.16 I had to enable mtd to transcode dvds
it's a daemon that mythc connects to so that you can transcode dvds.

is mtd running make sure it hasn't segfaulted

It is not running (at least it is not in ps -A). Could it have crashed on a
specific show ? Is there a transcoder log somewhere ?

But I thought that the transcoding state was stored in the database, so that
I should be able of toggling whether a show should be transcoded or not. Is
it a queue in mtd instead ?

Re: [mythtv-users] Is mythTV ready for prime time?

2005-03-14 Thread Kevin Saenz
No my question is.
Does KnoppMyth support dvb out of the box install?
I have a fusion dvb card it's pretty generic and it works when I
install linuxtv-dvb.
Also I had a strange episode which I can not reproduce and that was
pip using that card.

KnoppMyth is just the distro; based on Knoppix, which is based on
Debian. but you knew that. :) i think your question was meant to be:
does Myth support DVB?, correct?
i can't give a definitive answer on that because i'm not 100% certain
on what DVB is. but i'm guessing you're referring to the DVB cards.
too bad the KnoppMyth forum is down at the moment, i'm sure you could
find the answer there. this might help though:
http://www.pvrguide.no-ip.com/bbs/lofiversion/index.php?t4506.html
http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/index.php?page=DVBHowTo

hopefully that will help a bit.

KnoppMyth is a great distro. it's not quite as hyped up as FC2/3 here
in the Myth mailing list. but it's extremely easy to get up and
running.

The alpha version, R5A12 probably does. The earlier
released version R4V5 probably does not. You may get
a more definitive answer if you change the subject
line to something that includes the works KnoppMyth
and DVB.

Re: [mythtv-users] SUSE 9.1 Professional X86_64 MythTv?

2005-03-09 Thread Kevin Saenz
I am talking about my personal experience. Unless that is a crime now
:). I would be more inclinded to use Gentoo, though I haven't got the
time to build it. I have had no problems with getting codecs for
Redhat, Mandrake, Debian. Out of the box looking for rpms for Suse was
too much work. I appreciated the message advising me due to licencing
laws Suse 9.1 didn't come with dvd codecs (it could be because I had
the eval dvd from a Novell expo).

What are you talking about? It's harder to get codecs for Redhat or
fedora than suse :) Suse 9.1 is great, use it on my athlon 64's no
problem..

infact its one of the only distros that works very cleanly with the
16/32bit mix of apps.

Don't use suse. I tried it 6 months ago it was the worst couple of
days in my life. You will have a hard time getting codecs for dvd
playing and other commonly used codecs. Try a more popular distro.

Anyone successfully got MythTV to work on SUSE 9.1 Professional X86_64?
Isn't there firmware code that requires a 32-Bit OS?

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Australian Setup Help Needed

2005-03-08 Thread Kevin Saenz
I'm in Canberra, I have
Fusion DVB
Audgy2 zs (?)
Logitec Z5500 speakers
ATI radeon 8xxx card
Mandrake 10.0 the output is to an 80cm tv.

I have can view digital tv. I think my reception is poor so I am
looking for a signal amplifier for my internal antenna.

I have two digital tuners - Nova-T's from Renura in Canberra. Under my
original
build (2.4) I had some difficulties but under my new Mandrake 10.1 build
(2.6),
they just work! No customisation required. (I gave up trying to get the built
in
remote working though and now just use a serial IR receiver and LIRC.)

If you're watching on anything larger than a 19 TV, the improved quality is
well worth going digital.

Martin

Any other recommendations on good/easy to install configure digital
TV cards to use for Australia from anyone? I'd been steering clear of
digital because there are lots of tales of woe with them in this list!

 Phill

[mythtv-users] port in use

2005-03-07 Thread Kevin Saenz
Hi all,

I have searched the channels in Canberra for some reason I can only
find 2 channels 7 and win when searching SBS and updating the database
I get no lock and the searching for channels hangs. When I select
watch TV I get the following message.

Mythtv is already using avaliable inputs for recording if you want to
watch live tv cancel one of the in progress recordings from the delete
menu. If you want to watch an in progress recording select one from
the playback menu

The problem is that I have not configured recordings. I am wondering
what I have missed, and where should I start trouble shooting?

Thanks

Re: [mythtv-users] mythfrontend can't connect to database

2005-02-28 Thread Kevin Saenz
it's not explained well in the documentation from the mythtv install
directory run the following commands

cd setup
./setup

it will generate the gui and allow you to setup the backend once you
have finished you will be able to run mythbackend

in mythfrontend Setup-General the first screen says myth can't connect to
the database.

I filled in:
Host 127.0.0.1
Database mythconverg
User mythtv
Password mythtv

and Database Type was set as MySQL.

I think these are correct:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ mysql -umythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 41 to server version: 3.23.58

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql show tables;
++
Tables_in_mythconverg
++
callsignnetworkmap
capturecard
.

BUT, next time I go to Setup - General I get the same message that myth
can't connect.

any suggestions?

Re: [mythtv-users] Sydney DVB-T DIGITAL FORTY FOUR

2005-02-28 Thread Kevin Saenz
Correct me if I am wrong but Digital44 is offline temporarily.

I'm having trouble tuning one specific channel in Sydney.

With most channels, scanning works, by entering frequencies of each
known transport frequency
(http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=22). Channels 2, 3, 7, 9, 10
OK! Also, extra channels 21, 22, 30, 31, 32, 33, 70, 71, 72, 73, 77, 90,
99, 1, 11, 12, 13, 14, 100, etc OK!

But DIGITAL FORTY FOUR causes problems!! The transport info says it is
0Hz (57) (1), which is obviously wrong - and then mythbackend log
complains that it can't find channel info when starting the backend.
This is the only channel that uses QAM16 instead of QAM64, if that is a
clue for anyone?? Any ideas?

What I was told last night is if you have cable connection you will
have a good chance of pumping foxtel thru mythtv. I have been told
that Transact, optus and not sure about foxtel are sending the video

I keep meaning to look at the back of mine to see if it has serial. I
can't remember if I have fox or austar, but I imagine the units they
use are identical.

will take a look tonight though.
