If you've got the storage to rip a DVD. You could try DVD::rip. You probably could use dd if you had to, to copy all the information you could. Another suggestion would be to get one of those disk dr. things that spins a disk and puts on some sort of scratch coating, I've never used one myself, but I guess it's worth a try. As Kyle Rankin, author of the new "Linux Multimedia Hacks" (O'Reilly), puts it, "It seems like a person's computer is becoming the multimedia hub more and more these days. Even if you have some sort of portable device to listen to music or watch videos, most of the time you end up doing your ripping, encoding, and storage on your home PC." Linux has often been overlooked for these types of applications, but multimedia programs under Linux are getting more and more mature. The list of things you can't do with free open source tools under Linux keeps getting shorter as the multimedia tools get easier to use and more powerful. Rankin's book, one of O'Reilly's popular "Hacks" series, contains a hundred hacks to help readers get the best multimedia experience from their computers. Topics covered include: -Building a MythTV digital media hub that allows you to record television, watch videos, listen to music, and even play classic arcade games -Editing audio, video, and images, using both command-line and GUI tools, all of them free -Managing your music collection by synchronizing your MP3 player and desktop and using dynamic playlists -Creating and burning your own DVDs and VCDs -Streaming audio and video over the Internet -Syncing your digital camera to your PC to organize, touch up, and display your photographs "Linux can be a great multimedia platform, once you learn how to use it," Rankin adds. "The problem is that documentation for these tools is often scattered, incomplete, and in some cases overly complicated. Plus there are plenty of great tools that few people have even heard of. 'Linux Multimedia Hacks' puts all of this information in one place written in plain English." In the logs of DenyHosts it does list how many times a username was attempted. I haven't tried to configure it for blocking on username failures. Also, if there's anything else running on the system (for example another recording using software encoding) then nuvexport will get a lot less CPU (by design) because the commands it spawns run at the lowest priority level. You can try mysqlaccess mythtv to see what access mythtv has or Log into mysql then use mysql; select * from user where User = 'mythtv'; This will show you where mythtv is allowed to connect from. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael Jones Sent: Friday, July 01, 2005 2:30 AM To: Discussion about mythtv Subject: [mythtv-users] Frontends can't find database, can't connect When I try to configure a remote frontend (I've tried another FC3 box, a Mac OSX box.. haven't tried the Windows front end yet) it tells me that it can't find the database. Actually I was only commenting on the previous poster's post, > and he referred to the "commercial" use. How is it commercial use for me to access the service? Nobody is talking about you accessing the service. The commercial part comes when a company sells Myth boxes with a promise of program data without monthly fees. It's not exactly copying and reselling labs.zap2it data, but it's pretty close. A PVR is pretty much worthless without program data (note, this is only about the TV recording capabilities of Myth, not the music/video/weather/etc features). If I start selling Myth boxes (or worse, closed and rebranded Myth boxes) with the understanding, either implicit or explicit, that the program data is free, then I am defrauding the customer because I have no control over the data and cannot gurantee its availability, and violating the agreement with zap2it because I don't have the right to use their data for commercial purposes. It's not about reselling zap2it's free service, which would get you hot water very quickly. It's about using zap2it's free service as a selling point for a decidedly commercial venture -- selling hardware that runs MythTV (or a closed, rebranded MythTV that violates the GPL). That is why your HO is 100% wrong. We here are very fortunate to have zap2it provide listings for us for free -- without program data there would be far fewer people using Myth, and far less development at a much slower pace. We would like to continue to recieve zap2it data, and therefore do not like it when people do things that threaten this service (let alone when they try to rip the GPL out of Myth). We are also very fortunate to have a commercial venture called LxM which provides listings and other value-added services for MythTV for a very reasonable price, and which respects the open foundation upon which MythTV was built, as well as expressly giving back to the further development of the project. The moral of the story is that if you sell Myth boxes, it is a commercial venture. If it is a commercial venture the seller cannot give away zap2it's data, but can and should steer the customer to LxM, which also provides data. This also means that the commercial venture contributes back to community at least indirectly through LxM subscriptions, and hopefully directly, since anyone selling them surely has some ideas how to improve Myth and the time to do so, especially because working with Myth would be a full-time job. I've been reading the posts, and the general consensus seems to the that (single core) Intel processors have a performance advantage over AMDs. The benchmarks below seem to confirm this It looks like this may change with dual-core processors. The following benchmark compares 4 processors: AMD Athlon 64 4000+(single core) Intel P4 660 (single core) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (dual core) Pentium D840(dual core) http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050509/cual_core_athlon-15.html Judging from the benchmarks, it appears that AMD has a performance advantage over Intel once dual-core becomes mainstream (assuming that the encoding performance in these benchmarks will be roughly equivalent to MPEG-2 decoding performance) Guess we'll have to wait until some of us can get our hands on them to know for sure. Just thought I'd throw this out there. RE: [mythtv-users] Updated LxMSuite Website
It’s written on their website. Inside the FAQ section you’ll find the pricing guide for lxmsuite. It also talks about themes in the FAQ but there is another section that says something to the effect of a new theme every month (if I remember correctly). I am cool with everything they say on the site. They are up front and tell you about the pricing, 30 dollars (US) to sign up during the 6 month trial period and 15 a month after that (if you get in during the trial period.). The only thing I see off hand that irks me is in the FAQ::WHY SHOULD I PAY… section. There is a line that says, ”We’re offering you a respected status in a new and vital community.” J I’m part of an old and vital community, hackers. I mean the old school and true meaning of the word. I belong to the group of people who enjoy taking things apart, in order to supersede a previous defined limitation and rebuild what ever it is faster and stronger than before (or just tear it clean the hell up! lol). But all in all it doesn’t seem like a bad thing, this new fangled lxmsuite. That is if you don’t enjoy getting your fingers dirty and tinkering with your own box to learn something new. RE: [mythtv-users] Remote control issues
This one's about as crazy as the string remote trick, but maybe it'll work with some tinkering. If you're on a network and your card supports wake-on-lan then you could shut off the box and have another server send it a magic packet. If it does it everyday you'll have yourself a video alarm clock. Just a thought! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of IvanK.
