I had the same problem, which was resolved by upgrading to a later version of ALSA. This was on FC3, so I'm not sure which version FC4 ships with, but you might want to see if a newer version is available. This link has pictures of the the front and back of the 3250. From the
picture, it looks like the box should have 2 firewire ports on the left side
(looking at the back). If they aren't there on yours, most likely TW gave
you one with them covered/disabled.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Scientific Atlanta 3250 HD STB

I currently have an SA 3250 STB and just recently got a linux compatible
firewire card for capture. I'm curious if anyone could tell me where the
Firewire port is on their STB. The only thing I have even close to it is on
the front of my box, and it looks more like a USB port. I just got off the
phone with Time Warner after about 30 minutes of them continually telling me
my box had a firewire port, and that it was a USB-Firewire connection on the
front of the box, and then I finally gave up on this poor unintelligent
soul. I'm assuming the firewire port should be on the back of the cable box
along with all the other input and output connectors. Any assistance anyone
could give would be helpful, as I'd really like to get this up and running,
especially if anyone knows of a schematic on the net that shows the various
ports on the SA 3250. Thanks in advance.

[mythtv-users] Semi-OT: Help with modeline generation

2005-06-29 Thread Nate Thompson
I recently purchased a Samsung HLR4667W widescreen DLP television and
have been trying to get my MythTV box to work nicely with it via its
VGA input. Since the monitor's native resolution is 1280x720, I used
the following modeline to generate a decent picture:

1280x720 74.863 1280 1360 1488 1664 720 723 730 750

While that displays a very nice picture, it is overscanned both
horizontally and vertically. Using Powerstrip, I was able to eliminate
most of the horizontal overscan after generating this mode:

1280x720 79.159 1280 1424 1552 1760 720 723 730 750

Now, I need to create a "resolution within a resolution" to eliminate
most of the vertical overscan, but I'm at a loss to do so. Following
the instructions on the AVS Fourm link found in Jarod's HDTV FAQ,
every mode that I try to create results in my display saying that the
mode is not supported. I've determined that a 1228x690 mode should fit
the display almost perfectly, but can't get it to work. Any of the
modeline experts on this list care to give me a hand?

Thanks,

Just an update, I decided to pickup the Harmony 680 which is on sale
at Tigerdirect.com right now for $99, instead of waiting for the 880.
The main reason for this, besides the price, was that I think the
button layout will work better with all the functions that MythTV
offers. Hopefully things will go relatively smoothly and it'll be up
and running in no time.

Thanks for the feedback, I saw a post somewhere that the PVR cards
were included in the code database, but unfortunately I'm using a
homebrew serial IR adapter. I'm wondering if I could just tell it I'm
using a Phillips 1st generation Tivo (the remote I am currently using
came from this system), then make manual changes to the buttons/layout
as necessary? I think this would be the easiest way, since I already
have the appropriate config files on my MythTV box, but it would mean
more time using the Harmony software interface to get things right. Or
perhaps use the PVR-remote config files from Jarod's site, but I'm not
sure if the signals are compatible with my IR receiver.

If anyone currently has config files for the harmony and a serial IR
adapter and could send them my way, I'd really apprechiate it.

[mythtv-users] Semi-OT: Hooking up new HDTV to existing MythTV box

2005-06-15 Thread Nate Thompson
I have an odd question, hopefully someone can answer it as I'm not
sure the answer. I currently have my MythTV box hooked up via a
VGA->Component adapter to my 30" HD widescreen CRT and everything is
working fine (@ 960x540p). However, I just ordered a new Samsung 46"
DLP that has a VGA-in port on the back which I plan to use for MythTV
(saving the DVI/HDMI port for future use). Is there anything I need to
do to my xorg.conf file before switching to the new TV (i.e. delete
the modelines/settings for current TV), or will Linux do this
automatically for me when it senses a new output device has been
attached? I'm hoping it will automatically detect the modes supported
by the TV and let me select 1280x720p (native resolution).

Thanks and sorry for the odd question, I just want to make sure I
don't do any damage to my new television. Hopefully everything will go
well and I'll be running at 1280x720p in no time!

I believe you would also need to put 'interlace' at the end of that
modeline. As for the numbers themselves, I'm not sure if they would
change or not.

For movie video files, MythVideo already has the ability to download
coverart/IMDB info. This is done via the video manager screen. For TV
shows, there is nothing in place to download individual episode
abstracts, but I believe someone worked out a script that uses TVTome
to gather episode information. I haven't used it yet (only show I
currently have archived is 'The Office' and I inputed the informatino
manually).

You wouldn't happen to know the keys to define a bookmark would you
(in xine)? I am assuming this is the same as the 'save position'
feature found using the internal MythTV player for recorded TV
shows...

Or has the internal player support for Xvid-encoded files become
better in CVS? It would be nice to use the internal player, so the OSD
would be constant...

Yeah, this is why I'm waiting until .18.1 is released with official

keep my box running smoothly at the moment so I don't want to risk an

little-to-no effect on the size of the files. You must lower the

there might be some progress in reverse-engineering the hardware
acceleration API. Based on the comments from posted from the
developer, with this program it should be no problem to play HD
streams off of a Mac Mini.

Now I might just have to pick me up one, but I'm going to wait and see
if they bump up the specs (video card) a little bit to allow all of
the new features of Tiger to be utilized.

XMLParse::LoadTheme(): Can't open:

Running 'locate video-ui.xml' finds the file in all of the other theme

I actually picked up a RCA VHDC300 off of eBay recently for a pretty
cheap price. I got it setup last night and the picture quality is much
better on my HDTV than before with just svideo. I still have to do
some tweaking to compensate for a slight horizontal overscan, but I've
been pretty happy with it so far.

Before purchasing, I tried to find information online about its use in
this application (using it for computer applications), and wasn't able
to find too much about it. I did see a couple posts on a forum about
how it may only work well with 540p/1080i modelines, but I have not
yet tested this statement.

Thanks for the tips and the thread... I will check it out as soon as I
have a free moment. I guess what I don't understand is what makes the
custom mode inside of another one... Looking at the example on Jarod's
site, I can't seem to find a pattern between the 960x540p one he
created, and the 880x480p one that is "inside" the 540p one. I'm sure
I'm just not thinking about it in the right way.

Hopefully that thread will shed some light on that for me.

No, I'm using a PVR250 which is output via onboard GF4 MX440 (was

[mythtv-users] Semi-OT: HD modeline question, and XVMC question

2005-04-26 Thread Nate Thompson
I finally got around to ordering a VGA->Component adapter which arrived
yesterday afternoon. After some issues getting Windows to work properly, I
was able to generate a pretty good 960x540p modeline for my Philips
PW8402/37 30" WS television. While it seems to work pretty well, I have
noticed that there is about a 15 pixel overscan on both the top and bottom
of the screen. This doesn't impact video playback that much, but it does cut
off some of the menu/onscreen display writings. After going back and reading
Jarod's HDTV guide (which was a big help!), it looks like I should look into
creating another modeline that runs a different resolution within in the 540
timing that I created. Unfortunately, the guide doesn't go into exactly how
to accomplish this (atleast that I can find). Can someone give me a couple
pointers? My hardware and generated modeline are included below.

Also, has anyone tried to use XVMC with Xine? Does it work, and is there any
benefit? While I do not have a HD3000/Air2PC card at the moment, I do have a
couple HD .TS files that I'd like to try and playback. With standard
settings, I can play them back, but there are frequent drops in both audio
and video.

MythTV Specs:
AMD Athlon XP2500
Chaintech 7NIF2 (output via onboard GF4MX440)
512MB RAM
Running latest FC3/Nvidia/ALSA/MythTV from atrpms.net

Generated modeline:
"960x540" 40.982 960 992 1088 1216 540 541 544 560 +hsync +vsync

Thanks for any tips,

[mythtv-users] Problem with fast forward/rewind...

2005-04-24 Thread Nate Thompson
I've been having a problem since I installed .17, and it continues with .18;
hopefully someone can help me out. Whenever I use either the fast
forward/rewind functions, it will work normally for about 10 seconds then
the screen will freeze. If I hit play, it will resume playing normally from
that spot. However, if I hit FFW/REW again, it will continue moving in
whichever respective direction for another 10 seconds or so before freezing
again. I was wondering if anyone has seen this behavior, and if so, if they
were able to find a fix for it.

Any help would be apprechiated, hopefully I can get this figured out before
I go and break something tomorrow night trying to get my VGA->Component
adapter working. =)

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Sounds woes, FC3 Install using Jarod's Guide

2005-04-20 Thread Nate Thompson
That never seems to work properly for me. After doing the store, it
would work fine until I rebooted, and I'd have to reload alsamixer and
reset a couple switches before the sound would work. I've found by
leaving dmix open all the time in the background, the settings seem to
survive a reboot without any problems.

Not sure why this is, 'aslactl store/restore' worked fine when I was
running FC2.

I used to have this problem. To get around it, I simply enabled
'Desktop Sharing' in the KDE Control Panel under Internet Components.
Now, I only get one instance of mythfrontend, and I can control the
console window when I login via VNC. There is also a way to do this
via the xorg.conf file, I think there were some posts about this a
little while ago.

package could be submitted as bleeding/testing if the packager feels

RE: [mythtv-users] SBLive + ALSA + AC3 question

2005-04-08 Thread Nate Thompson
I believe I have fixed the majority of my problems, however I have run into
something new. Playback seems to be fine now of DD-encoded material through
Xine, and I am not getting any of the problems I mentioned previously.
However, I have some Xvid-encoded files that feature MP3-based soundtracks
that will not play unless I turn off the 'IEC958 Optical Raw' switch in kmix
(or alsamixer for that matter). As soon as I uncheck this box, the sound is
present via my receiver. I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced
this, and also is this the only switch you have enabled via kmix?

Mine has been doing the exact same thing as you are experiencing... Getting
stuck in a certain mode, or getting stuck in a loop where the receiver
alternates between stereo and dolby digital modes, producing no sound but
requiring a warm boot to resolve it.

Still looking into that one (recent upgrade to FC3 + ALSA 1.08).

kewl, i'll have to check it out and see ... didn't want to go through the
work if someone else could confirm it didn't work :) ... do you use xine or
mplayer for movies? do you have problems with it "sticking" in

doesn't always happen, so i can't fully explain how to reproduce...

my ASUS mobo has an onboard sound card w/ coax out, but i haven't had any
better luck with it (last tried ALSA 1.0.5, iirc).. can't recall what
onboard sound card it was or what driver it used, either, but it'd free up
some expansion slots if i could use that :S

Hm, could be that, could be nVidia drivers. I saw freezes like that when I

Haven't yet tried 7174 on that box...

Thanks for the reply Jarod... I was able to get almost all the way through
your FC3 documentation, but seem to be getting stuck on the database import.
Once completed, it freezes when the Titivilus background loads in either
'mythfrontend' or 'mythtvsetup'. Only way to get control of the system again
is to restart. Would you have any ideas as to what I should look at to
correct this? Would importing the database back into MySQL as user mythtv
instead of root (as defined in MySQL) cause any problems?

If I build a fresh database, everything seems to work fine, so I think there
is something in the old database preventing it from starting properly (no
errors when writing 'mythfrontend -v all' to a file)? The old database was a
.17 running on a FC2 system.

That's basically what I've done in the past. No problems whatsoever.

RE: [mythtv-users] Semi-OT: Upgrade to FC3

2005-04-01 Thread Nate Thompson

[mythtv-users] Problem with importing Mythconverg database backup...

2005-03-31 Thread Nate Thompson
I am almost done with my fresh install of FC3 (from FC2) and have everything
working until the very end. When I import my SQL database into MySQL using
'mysql -u mythtv -p mythconverg < mythtv_backup.sql', the process takes a
little time and I am finally returned to a prompt. Mythbackend starts
without any problems (and actually starts to record a show), but when I try
to run mythfrontend, it locks shortly after the Titivilus background loads
and I have to restart the machine. This also occurs if I try to run
'mythtvsetup'.

If I create a fresh database, everything seems to work fine. That leads me
to think that there is something it doesn't like in the old database. I've
tried turning on verbose errors and writing them to a file, but nothing out
of the ordinary appears. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should look
at? I'd hate to lose all my database settings/recordings if at all possible.

[mythtv-users] Semi-OT: Upgrade to FC3

2005-03-31 Thread Nate Thompson
This is somewhat off-topic, but I was wondering if this would be an OK
solution to upgrading FC2 to FC3. I have messed up something in my FC2
install, so I figured now would be a good time to upgrade. My plan is to
dump the mythconverg database and store it somewhere safe, delete everything
but the /video partition, and do a fresh install of FC3. Then I should be
able to put the database back in place (once everything else is installed of
course) and it should all hopefully work as it did before with no loss of
recordings. Is this a proper assumption, or am I missing something here?

Thanks for any help you can give,

RE: [mythtv-users] Editing .asoundrc for Xine 5.1 passthru withSBLive!

2005-03-30 Thread Nate Thompson
Hate to reply to myself, but after reading some information I found online,
there seems to be a problem with ALSA 1.06 and some digital output setups.
Therefore, I think I am going to take this opportunity to go ahead and
upgrade to FC3 as I've been putting it off for awhile before trying anything
else. Hopefully I can just dump the database, upgrade via the CDs, and get
things running again without too many problems. I'll post again if I have
the same problems post-FC3 upgrade.

I was able to get mythtv to work using 'ALSA:digital' after following your
advice, but the audio still skips constantly in Xine when I play a file with
'Pass Through' selected in the audio section. Is there any way to get more
output from xine as to what exactly is going on when it tries to play the
file?

Just for reference, if I configure mplayer like I had before, everything
works as it should (smooth playback and AC3 output via SPDIF on my Live!
Card).

I assume you are trying to output via SPDIF. What do you get when you run
aplay -l. That's a lowercase L. That will list out your devices on your
sound card. In my asound.conf I have my digital out PCM as device 0,2.
Here is my asound.conf:

In here, change the hw0,2 to whatever aplay -l displays. I hopw it helps.

2005-03-30 Thread Nate Thompson
I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting their SB Live! Card
to play a DD5.1 soundtrack via Xine using the 'Pass Thru' setting in the
setup menu? Whenever I select this option, I only get garbled sound output.
I'm assuming it is because I am using a very basic .asoundrc file that isn't
configured properly. Has anyone tried to use Jarod's updated file
(http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/asoundrc.txt) that he made for his Audigy with a
standard SB Live! card? Any tips would definitely be apprechiated. If it
matters, I believe I am using ALSA 1.06.

No, you can't, the protocol between the frontend and backend has changed
since 0.16 and they'll refuse to talk to each other.

You shouldn't do that, fix the PATH problem instead (see below). Making
symlinks like that will really trip you up if you upgrade to a new version
of Qt.

> (tcsh: Bad : modifier in $ (/).)

This is the problem -- you're using tcsh instead of bash as your shell.
I'm guessing you probably upgraded from an older version of OS X, instead of
starting with a fresh Panther install. As the howto says:
"If you don't start from scratch, some of the instructions may not be
correct for your setup." You've hit one of those places. =/

The tcsh version needs to be put into .tcshrc instead of .bash_profile, and
it should look like this:

setenv SRCDIR $HOME/src
setenv QTDIR $SRCDIR/qt-mac-free-3.3.3
setenv DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/lib:$QTDIR/lib setenv PATH
${PATH}:/usr/local/bin:$QTDIR/bin

Use "source ~/.tcshrc" to load that into your environment, instead of ".
~/.bash_profile". The rest of the howto should work the same.

> If I'm being a pain just ignore me...

Not at all. Being a pain would be making the same mistakes over and over,
and not listening to solutions. Making mistakes, learning from them, and
going on to make new mistakes is just a normal and healthy part of life. (If
I go by the number of mistakes I make, I'm extremely successful at life.)
