[mythtv-users] OT: Cable co. refuses to offer firewire enabled box
So I take my digital cable box to the Cable One office in Boise ID. The lady says she doesnt know what firewire or 1394 connecters are and shows me their latest box which doesnt have one. So I figure it will be easier to speak with a tech; so I go home and call and ask if they have 1394 enabled boxes. The lady doesnt know and connects me to a tech, he says that they do have them (at the office I was at) but that they dont support them. I said If I come down can I get one? and he says yes. SO, I go down there and talk to a completely different lady. Again she doesnt know what firewire is. I told her I spoke with techs name and he said they have them. She dissapears to the back and says it will cost me $10 more a month to have a box with firewire because only their DVR boxes have them. I pulled out the fcc document and said that they need to order me one. She took the FCC doc to the manager and they came back and said No we dont have to provide you with one. I should be able to get one at no extra cost right? Thanks, Ryan p.s. ill be making more calls. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Ryan wrote: I should be able to get one at no extra cost right? Thanks, Ryan They can charge you for it. They dont have to give your a free STB, you will have to pay a rental fee to use it. They have to make one available. If they have, and they want to charge for it, they can. Interesting, I thought if I was trading my old one in (which is one of the 2 I get for free) that they would have to give me it for free (since its still 1 of the 2 I get for free). $10 a month is pretty steep, I suppose Ill have to think about it. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Well, if they only firewire enabled box they have is the DVR one I can see why they want to charge $10/month for it. Is the one you want to trade in a DVR box, or is it just a regular cable box? The DVR box itself is a service from your cable co, so they will want to charge for that, along with the fact that the DVR box is much more /unit than a regular cable box, so theyve got theyve got to get thier money back. I dont get any cable boxes from my cable co for free, any version of thier box will cost me something. Well I was hoping they would give me a motorola 6200 not a DVR, and the tech said they have them. I think the frontdesk lady was trying to make a sell. Anyway, Im calling the tech back (since he knows what equipment they have) and see if they have a non-DVR box. The one im trading in is just an older motorola dtv cable box (non-dvr). And yes, I can understand paying for the DVR box, but if they have (or can order) a motorola box that would be much nicer. -Ryan ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I should be able to get one at no extra cost right? I don't know about no extra cost, but they are required to provide you with one. However, the actual FCC requirement only requires that they replace or upgrade your existing *high definition* set-top box. Many cable operators differentiate between high-def digital cable and standard digital cable. If your current plan/box is not labeled high def by them, then presumably you would need to upgrade your service to their high-def plan. If the only high-def box they have with firewire is the DVR, then you're stuck paying the extra $10/mo. Note that as of July 1, 2005, *all* HD STBs that they get *must* have firewire enabled (only applies to equipment acquired after that date). So maybe you'd have better luck after July 1... -JAC ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

The FCC doc only applies if you already have an HDTV-capable cable box without a FireWire port and request one with. They get to charge you if all you have is a digital cable box. I suppose I should go read the FCC regs (they are always such a joy) but wasn't somebody saying that technically, they can reduce the 1394 to SDTV resoution? Seems like an odd thing to require it on HD boxes if that's so. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Cablevision on Long Island is installing a firewire enabled box for me today (and I'm paying a $40 fee for installation). There's been no discussion about additional fees. I was paying for a High Def STB before and I should be paying the same next month. My goal, if I can do it, is to record Deadwood in High Def a week from Sunday. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I read the pertinent piece of the FCC reg, but I thought someone had said that they can't charge any additional cost. It makes since though, as Im not currently an HD subscriber. Its not worth it for me to pay $10/mo for a DVR receiver that I wont use.
