Re: [mythtv-users] OT: Phone Concentrator(?)

2005-10-01 Thread Todd
I have been running asterisk for over a year now...some things I have
learned...

The X100P cards are WAY more trouble than they are worth if you are going to
use to for more than CallerID. You will never get the echo out.

If you want to answer the phone (via SIP or Myth) or you want to get into
VoIP in general, get something with an FXO port. I recommend the Sipura
SPA-3000. It runs $99 and has 2 FXS (to run a normal phones) and one FXO
port. The FXO port you can configure to ring the myth box directly with
no Asterisk involved. It will pass all the CallerID info.

http://www.sipura.com/products/spa3000.htm
...you configure the thing with a web browser...very nice.

Then if you really want to go nuts you can buy a 2 line phone (I like the
Panasonic expandable wireless phones) plugging both lines into the FXS
ports on the Sipura and setup a dialing plan to dial out at 2 or 3 cents a
minute nearly world wide...or have an incoming 877 number at the same rate.
All the info is in here somewhere:

http://www.voip-info.org/

Bottom line: The easiest way to get started in my opinion is with something
like Sipura box, just make sure it has an FXO port to ring the Myth Box
up.

Good luck,
ToddD

Look into YAC and xYAC. If you search the archives for yac you should
turn up a thread related to that. At least I remember seeing one here a
while back. xYAC allows you to popup messages and callerid info using X
and they display over anything - Myth menus, xine, mplayer, ogle,
whatever. I was looking into doing this myself, but I just haven't
picked up a modem with callerid yet.

If you want to learn asterisk, X100P cards go for $15 on ebay.
That's what I use. Definitely has a learning curve, but you can
do a heck of a lot more than callerid with asterisk.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it.

Jon,

How are you making this happen?
Via MythNotify and a modem in your Myth backend?
Via Asterisk? (of so, can you be more specific?)

thanks,
mark

ps -- as a sidebar, which VOIP providers are you utilizing? You can
answer off-list if you'd like.

I don't know about him, but I use Asterisk and mythtvosd to send callerid
info to my main mythfronted. I haven't bothered broadcasting it to all of
the frontends since I usually only infront of that particular one.

there was a pretty big discussion about getting caller id info in OSD
a while ago:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/engine?list=mythtvdo=search_resultssearch_forum=forum_1search_string=vonage+caller+idsearch_type=AND

i think Vonage was the main service ppl were discussing. somebody had
a perl script i believe that grabbed the broadcast and sent it to the
OSD. i haven't taken the time to try it yet but others said it was
working.

bw with MythPhone and reading up on Vonnage and SunRocket, etc when
bw it occurred to me that it would be really nice to have some sort
bw of telecom concentrator. Where the regular house phones all
bw belong to a central computer that can receive calls from and send
bw calls out through the various available devices; be it standard
bw landline, internet phone or mobil phones attached via USB port.

The standard answer is a well-known free Linux PBX package called
Asterisk. Has anyone tried running Myth and Asterisk on the same box?

(It's easy to think of all kinds of dandy other things for a computer
to do once you commit to having it turned on all the time.)

If you have a search on the list, I think you'll find quite a few people
using asterisk and myth.

I have both running on my backend server, and it works very well. I have a
PSTN line coming in, and various VOIP services. Phones are Cisco 7900
series IP phones. The dialplan makes call routing invisible to the user
e.g. if I dial a local number, asterisk routes it over the PSTN, but if I
dial an international number, it goes out via a VOIP service.

The cooleset thing is when the phone rings, the caller ID comes up on the
telly!

Cheers,

Jon
