Heh, that's the same bug I had with my Radeon 9000 Pro some ages ago. Every
driver for the card was broken in one way or another when it came to playing
back HD content... From what I was able to figure out, the Xv support for
these cards isn't very good for anything HDTV-sized. I figured it would have
improved by now, but I guess not... I just switched to a GF4MX, and all was
happy. I probably have a spare GF4MX around here if you want to borrow one
for a bit. :-)

No, it doesn't. I also installed the ati driver. At first, it had
some permission error, which I don't remember exactly. I managed to
get rid of that error using some suggestions I found online, then I
found the same pink bar for 1080i video.

The driver lies. It's not the only one, I found the IEG chips
claimed a larger window too but could not draw more than 1280 wide
as I recall.

Until HDTV came along, nobody really tested xvideo scaling circuits
with wider than 1600 I suspect, so it's harder to get than one would
think.

I don't know if ati's proprietary linux drivers help in this area.

We do need lists of "what doesn't work" to add to the lists of what
does work.

I don't know exactly what this implies, but when I run xvinfo, it
tells me the maximum XvImage size is 2048x2048.

Anyhow, I manage to work around the problem by writing a start-up
script for mythfrontend and don't use xv.

#! /bin/bash

export NO_XV=1
sudo nice -n -2 mythfrontend

It's not perfect, but at least watchable.

So can anyone give a definite answer, whether the Radeon 9100 IGP
(RS300 chipset) supports 1080i video overlay or not?

I guess at some point, I may have to install Windows and see what happens.

Where?

As far as I can see they've added HDTV output modes, all very well but
this is very different from the backend scaler on the chip actually
being able to render HDTV sized video.

You may well find it's a hardware limitation. I can't find any mention
of HDTV video rendering support on ATI's pages on the 9100 IGP.

You can verify this by specify "-vo x11" to mplayer and the problem
will disappear, though the image quality may not be as good or your
machine may not be able to keep up.
You are indeed correct. Guess I need to get myself a new video card.
That explains why my mythbox is fine, too -- it's a pundit with the
winischofer sis driver.

What video card driver you are using? I've filed a bug report with
X.org radeon driver. Make a noise there if you'd like. The more
people complain, the earlier the problem will be solved. (I've found
people have been complaining for 2 years.)

I've got the same problem with another ATI card, Radeon 9100 IGP. I
don't think it's video memory related. As far as I can tell, it's
problem of the combination of radeon card, driver, and xvideo.

You can verify this by specify "-vo x11" to mplayer and the problem

I get a green line on the right side of my ABC HD recordings (720p) I
just used the playback overscan feature to hide it.
It's hard to overscan 1/4 of the image. It's not a small bar (I've seen
that green one, about 3-4 pixels wide), more like 300 pixels wide (can't
screenshot because it's XV).

Doesn't happen on my actual mythbox, but it's running at 800x600 for the
tv so if it's truly a video card issue, it wouldn't show up at that res.
