Re: [Nagios-users] how to fix excessive latency

2010-06-28 Thread shadih rahman
There is something definitely not right here. We have about 1 checks
and the performance is lot better. Anyhow we are using the following values
check_result_reaper_frequency=10
max_check_result_reaper_time=20

You should enabled debug mode and check the debug logs. Are you writing to
any backend database? Are you using nsca to transfer service information to
remote location. what is the value of your status_update_interval? what is
your external_command_buffer_slots?

There are three things you need to check

1) if Nagios server notification is enabled?
2) if service or host level notification is enabled?
3) if your contact definition has proper notification attribute?

[Nagios-users] nrpe configuration help

2010-06-07 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I need some suggestion for nrpe configuration. I have 3 different kind
of architecture in my setup. I have 32 bit linux machine (plugins installed
at /usr/lib/nagios/plugins directory) , 64 bit linux machine (plugins
installed /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins directory), solaris machine (plugins
installed at /opt/libexec directory)

   In my nrpe.conf file I would three definitions like below

   [check_something]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_something
   [check_something_x64]= /usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_something
   [cehck_something_unix]=/opt/libexec/check_somthing

 in my service definition, I would name them differently and call the
command file, for example I would have a check disk, disk_x64, disk_unix.
In commands.cfg file I would call them like

command_name check_remote
command_line $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c $ARG1$

However, now new requirements came in, where disk, disk_x64, disk_unix must
have same service name. I need to find a clever way define service disk and
call different nrpe command based on architecture. Can someone please help
me with this.  Thanks

[Nagios-users] Can an entity have more than one parent?

2010-05-28 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I am monitoring a set of vif behind csm. I want to control the amount
notifications. So basic idea is if the host is down don't bother sending
notification for the vif. So, I fiugure I would just create parent child
relationship with the host serving the page and vif name. However, one
problem is, all vifs are being served by two hosts. So I have two
questions.

1) Can a host have two parents?
2) What happen if only one of those parents go down?

Please advise on these.  Thanks

I am doing a check which counts the number of process running on the remote

Re: [Nagios-users] Designing distributed and failover architecture

2010-04-16 Thread shadih rahman
I have not implemented distributed nagios but I have failover setup. Few
comments I want to make

1) If you are using ndoutils for backend make sure you have looked at faster
speed up option. There is a patch for faster start up in opsview

2) if you using nsca to transfer acknowledgement and comments make sure you
do some research on that. scalability is a problem

3) remember to understand failover architecture properly. I have made few
mistakes when it comes to ndoutils. your ndomod data processing option
should be different on the failover from master server. Your master should
push configuration definitions into database but your failover should not
push theses configuration defitions in database.

4) Keep in mind scalability will be a problem. data retention is really a

Re: [Nagios-users] greedy regular experssion nrpe

2010-03-31 Thread shadih rahman
Asif,
   Thanks for your response. I am attaching the actual plugin in this
email. However the actual regular expression line is below.

if ($_=~ qr/$xgrep/mo){
$returnstring= "We have found $xgrep in $opfile";

nrpe definition is something like this

command[check_filecontent_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_filetest -n
$ARG1$ -G $ARG2$ -c $ARG3$

service definition is something like this

check_nrpe -H whatever -c check_filecontent_x64 -a filename ".*foo*" 1

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios web GUI, contact groups, hosts and services

2010-02-08 Thread shadih rahman
Karssen,

Your problem appears to be process not the tool. I am not suggesting
how to conduct business in your organization but here is my suggestion.

I would reach out to noc management and put together a wiki or how to
for each unique possible critical alert scenario. The I would add the
"notes_url" parameter of Nagios to point to that particular wiki page.

   Only thing noc has to do click on the notes_url page and they will know
exactly what to do with the alert. Thanks

[Nagios-users] benchmark question

2009-12-14 Thread shadih rahman
List,
   Is there any information as to what is the maximum number of services one
can run on a single box with single instance of Nagios? I did not find any
concrete data on this.

I am running a single instance of nagios on a quad core 2.5 GHZ machine with
with 4 Gigs of RAM.

I have total of 7359 service check running on this box. I have also
ndoutils running on the same box as backend.

My total service checks is going to five fold very soon with a lot of nrpe
checks.

Now, my question is should I run multiple instance of nagios on the same box
or a single instance will be able to handle about 3 service checks?

I already tested a dev environment with multiple instance of nagios with
some hacking to init.d script, it started and monitored fine. What would be
the preferred method of running nagios, single instance on a box or multiple
instance on a box when we are dealing with high number of service checks?

Please comment on this.  Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] What would you want in a replacement web interface?

2009-11-24 Thread shadih rahman
This is not an issue. nagios search bar does regular expression search. do
ffs-* in your box and it will result in all the hosts.

Nagios is a monitoring tool. I think nagios users and administrators are
some what involved with technology. Knowing how to do "regular expression"
search is not an extreme requirement.

Re: [Nagios-users] how to start nagios multiple instance

2009-10-23 Thread shadih rahman
Marc,
Thanks for your reply. The reason behind doing multiple instance is
described below.  Thanks

1) Previous monitoring system (survivor) was running multiple instance based
on different systems group.

2) I have been doing hostgroup and servicegroup along with contactgroup to
represent different instances of previous monitoring system. However its
growing exponentially and seeing performance issue. ( currently there are
8000 servicechecks. Some of the hosts will be 20 fold on the number of
service checks run on them soon.)

3. Ndoutils database has performance on quering some of these services.
When run different instances with separate database their data set will be
smaller and it will be easy to retain the data for longer time.

information. However I have few questions. Thanks in advance

1) How would we manage init.d script? are we going to use one init.d script
to start all the process or should there be multiple init.d script?
2) Do we need multiple nagios.cfg file for each instance or one nagios.cfg
file separate parameter suche "log_file" with multiple argument.
3) Is there a possibility for namespace clash in cgi urls?

The best solution would be service escalation or host escalation feature of

Re: [Nagios-users] error check_snmp for UPS

2009-10-06 Thread shadih rahman
Who is the manufacturer for you Upses. There are bunch of good Ups check
you can find in nagiosexchange website. Most of them are written for APC
and Liebert. The snmp for upses are well defined. You can write quick perl
or shell script to monitor these.

With this configuration only nagiosadmin will get the email. You need to
define contact group properly. Please see the following documentation.
Thanks

and also see contactgroup definition

Re: [Nagios-users] nagios notification to different email address

2009-09-22 Thread shadih rahman
My problem,

 I am trying to send a down and recovery message to a different contact
group than what is defined in host definition. Also I want to send only one
email to the new contact group. In the example below host A has contact
group C defined. However I want send my notification to contact group D.
Thanks

I have a host definiton like

define host {
host_name   A
hostgroups X
alias   A
address   A
contact_groups  C
check_period24x7
check_interval  15
retry_interval  3
max_check_attempts  3
notification_period extended
notification_interval   30
notification_optionsd,r,f
notifications_enabled   1
check_command   check-host-alive
}

I have a host escalation definition

define hostescalation{
hostgroup_nameX
contact_groups D
first_notification -1
last_notification  1
notification_interval  0
escalation_period  24x7
escalation_options d,r
}

Re: [Nagios-users] Power Strips and Nagios

We are using the following product for power panel related monitoring. It
has snmp module which you can monitor. Here is the link

http://www.raritan.com/support/dominion-px/1.3.1/MIB/

Also for older power strip without snmp you can use this device to get power
related data. I hope this helps.

Re: [Nagios-users] orphaned

2009-09-15 Thread shadih rahman
Eduardo,
 you should check "Performance Info" tab on the left pane. I am
guessing your check latency is very high. Anyhow, I have ran into this
situation in the past. Here are some things to check.

1) Increase debug information in your log and check nagios debug log.
2) Are you using NSCA, if you are make sure this is configured properly
3) Are you using Ndoutils, make sure the connection for ndoutils are
correct and database is not experiencing any performance issue.
4) play around with the following parameters in your nagios.cfg

check_result_reaper_frequency=10
max_check_result_reaper_time=20

5) make sure you read this document.

[Nagios-users] nagios scheduling and Hard/soft state question

2009-09-03 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   according to the definition hard state is reached upon completing the
max_check_attempt . This particular service status information is stating
otherwise. This particular service check has max_check_attempt set to 3.
However it looks like soft state changed into Hard with checking for 3
times. Is this a bug or am I missing something here. Please advise on
this.  Thanks

[Nagios-users] ndo nagios failover

2009-08-25 Thread shadih rahman
All,
I have two machines which are responsible for nagios monitoring. One is
master and one is fail over. I am also keeping historical data in
NdoUtils. I am using mysql for Ndoutils and they have master-master
replication. So in master I have active check and active notification
enabled. In fail over just the nagios process is running but there is no
active check and active notification. Both have identical configurations.

My question is Host A (master) is running NdoUtils and Host B (failover) is
also running NdoUtils. Although I have master-master replication, but is
there any possibility of proper copying of data from master to failover
database? Please advise on this. Thanks

   My check ping result is not making sense. I have the following in
commands.cfg

define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive
command_line$USER1$/check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -t 45 -4 -w
3000.0,100% -c 3000.0,100% -p 1
}

However I see the following output

 Mon Aug 17 13:06:34 2009];HOST ALERT: HostA;UP;SOFT;2;PING OK - Packet loss
= 87%, RTA = 2.09 ms
[Mon Aug 17 13:09:24 2009];HOST ALERT: Host B;DOWN;SOFT;2;PING CRITICAL -
Packet loss = 94%, RTA = 4001.56 ms
 [Mon Aug 17 13:14:44 2009];HOST ALERT: Host C;UP;SOFT;3;PING OK - Packet
loss = 93%, RTA = 1.15 ms
 [Mon Aug 17 13:55:14 2009];HOST ALERT: Host D;UP;SOFT;2;PING OK - Packet
loss = 83%, RTA = 2.19 ms

How can I have 87 % packet loss when I am sending only on packet. Can
someone please explain this to me. Thanks in advance.

[Nagios-users] parent/child host relationship and vif

2009-08-13 Thread shadih rahman
I am monitoring bunch of vif which is served by one actual host. Is it
possible to achieve the following just by defining host/service definition

host - A

vif1.com has parent A

vif2.com has parent B

vif3.com has parent C

I am checking the following url with check_http plugin

vif1.com/someurl
vif2.com/someurl
vif3.com/someurl

What I am trying to achieve is that if host A goes down none of services
with all three vif will not alert since they have parent/child
relationship. Please advise on this. thanks

[Nagios-users] nagios taking too long to start

2009-08-07 Thread shadih rahman
Hi,
   I have sizeable installation of nagios server. I have two server with
failover setup. Since I am using ndo, my server takes a long time to start
up. While my primary servers doing initial insertion and deletion, my
backup thinks primary is not in service so it starts notifications instead
of primary.

   I am trying to see how I can resolve this issue. I have downloaded the
newer version of ndo but it did not help. I think it has to do with my
indexing. I have read the following thread which talks about reducing the
table size by lowering the retention time.

http://www.mail-archive.com/nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net/msg23938.html

  However my requirement is that I have to keep most of hostchecks,
servicechecks and events for longtime. Also, in another post Jim Avery
mentioned the following.

  innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 2

What does innodb flush means when it comes to master-master replication
between primary and secondary. Please advise on this. Thanks

Following are my current indexes --

[Nagios-users] ndoutils upgrade

2009-08-04 Thread shadih rahman
I am thinking about doing a ndoutils update to 1.48b from 1.47b.

I see that I need to change db schema and make some changes.

my ndo has been collecting data over 6 months for medium size installation.

Should I be concerned or take special pre-caution? Please advise on this.
Thanks

[Nagios-users] Help with check_cluster plugin

2009-07-27 Thread shadih rahman
I am trying to monitor 3 exchange server and combined them with
check_cluster to report if there was any issue with them or not. If any of
my exchange server is down then my check_cluster should report down. So I
have 3 individual exchange checks as listed below

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE1.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex1!something!pasword
contact_groups  standard
}

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE2.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex2!something!password+
contact_groups  standard
}

define  service {
useuse-standard
host_nameEXCHANGE3.com
service_description   executive_exchange_check
servicegroupsexchangecheck
check_command
check_email_service!nagios-ex3!something!password
contact_groups  standard
}

Now I have the following check_cluster check.

define  service {
use   standard
service_description  exchangestatus
servicegroups  Executive_dashboard
check_command
check_cluster_service!"exchangecheck"!0:0!0:0!$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE1.com:executive_exchange_check,$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE2.com:executive_exchange_check,$SERVICESTATEID:CUIT-EXCHANGE3.com:executive_exchange_check$
contact_groups  atg
}

First, my cluster check "exchangestatus" . does it need any association with
any hostgroup? I want "Executive_dashboard" servicegroup to show only one
"exchangestatus" check not three. I set the warnning and critical to be 0:0
and 0:0. I want anything but "OK" state to alert me. Is my threshold
setting correct? Please advise on this. Thanks

[Nagios-users] check ping explanation required

2009-07-14 Thread shadih rahman
Nagios uses check_ping for the host check of most hosts.

The check is configured to send only one ping.

So if Nagios receives a response, it is 0% packet loss.

If no response, it is 100% packet loss.

# 'check-host-alive' command definition
define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive
command_line$USER1$/check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ t 45 -4 -w
3000.0,100% -c 3000.0,100% -p 1
}

Yet, Nagios reports:

p...@bway2852-3-1.net.columbia.edu:2009-06-30 23:24:33:PING
OK - Packet loss = 85%, RTA = 47.06 ms

How is it possible for Nagios to lose 85% of one ping?

[Nagios-users] a special http check

2009-07-07 Thread shadih rahman

Re: [Nagios-users] monitoring load balanced url

2009-07-02 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I thought of this approach. I will create a service call
'check_public_url' on host1, host2, host3, host4, and etc.   Then I would
create another check which will use "check_cluster" plugin to check the
service status like below

./check_cluster -s check_public_url -d -w 0:50 -c 50:75

Am I approaching the right solution? Please advise on this. thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Issue with NRPE

Sharada,
check the permission on the monitoring server for the actual plugin you
are calling. Make sure check_nrpe has the proper permission. Also make
sure you have the right version of nrpe and nrpe plugin. The nrpe server
and the check_nrpe has to be same version. I always found it easy to
install it from the source than working with prebuilt package. I hope this
works for you.  Thanks

2009-06-09 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I have been running ndoutils with nagios for a while. When I initially
setup my nagios, I played around with a lot of different service checks and
changed around a lot of config parameters. Now, I have a solid setup and I
have not changed configuration for a while. When I go into the database and
look at nagios_objects tables, I see all sorts of old objects which do not
exist in my current setup. Does ndoutils clean up and throw away old config
when we start nagios? Please advise on this. Thanks

installation instruction is included in nagiosexchange link.

[Nagios-users] DISABLE_SVC_CHECK does not keep track of username

2009-05-19 Thread shadih rahman
All
   I am seeing that when anyone acknowledges a problem in nagios, it keeps
track of username and notes information. However if someone execute command
like DISABLE_SVC_CHECK or DISABLE_HOST_NOTIFICATIONS or many other commands
then nagios does not keep track of username and who initiated the command.
Is this an intended behavior or is it a bug? Can someone please comment on
this.  Thanks

[Nagios-users] hostgroup view with hosts not having any service

2009-05-15 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   When someone click onto hostgroup summary and they are taken to the
following link

https://example/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?hostgroup=fake-groups&style=overview

now in this link it lists all hosts that belongs to fake-groups. All these
clickable host links will take us to the following link if we were to click
on them.

https://example.com/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi?host=fakehost&style=detail

This is great but if that particular host did not have any service attache
to it then it takes you to an empty page. This can be quite confusing for
managers and less technical people of the organization. However if those
clickable links were to take us to the following link, then it would create
less confusion. Please advise on this. Thanks

[Nagios-users] check_snmp output

2009-04-22 Thread shadih rahman
All,
   I want to show the result of check_snmp in a certain way. For example if
I am doing a "nominal current" check on Liebert ups, the snmp query will
return 506 as result. However this actauly means 50.6 amp. Is there any
way to control the output on check_snmp plugin. I am aware of the "-u"
option but I am not sure if I can use this to achieve the desired result I
am looking for.  Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] New to Nagios -- simple problem with data from nrpe

2009-04-17 Thread shadih rahman
Brian,
   First thing to check is version of NRPE? NRPE comes with two version,
stripped and non-stripped. Make sure both machine has the same version
running. If not, then play with the "-n" option to fix the incompatibility
issues. Then check if your nrpe.cfg where you define the actual checks are
the same on both nagios server and the monitored machine. I hope this
helps.

[Nagios-users] serious performance issue

2009-04-07 Thread shadih rahman
I am seeing a ton of orphaned error message for both services and hosts. I
am running nagios on a quad core 2.2 GHZ machine running 4 GHZ memory. I
will paste my configuration file below. I have the machine sending ndo to a
local database sitting on a 170 GB Hard drive. nagios is obcessing on both
host and services and sending data to a machine with identical
configuration. I am doing failover using NSCA. Please advise on this.

[Nagios-users] check_nrpe help with multipple argument

2009-04-02 Thread shadih rahman
I am trying to execute a check_nrpe with multiple argument and it is not
working. I have the following definition in my nrpe.cfg

command[check_users_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_users -w 5 -c 10
command[check_load_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_load -w 15,10,5 -c
30,25,20
command[check_hda1_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 20% -c 10%
-p /dev/hda1
command[check_zombie_procs_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_procs -w 5
-c 10 -s Z
command[check_total_procs_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_procs -w 150
-c 200
command[check_disk_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 15% -c 10%
-p $ARG1$
command[check_disk_excluding_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w
15% -c 10% -p $ARG1$ -x $ARG2$
command[check_process_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_proc -w $ARG1$ -c
$ARG2$ -C $ARG3$
command[restart-remote_x64]=/usr/lib64/nagios/eventhandlers/remote-restart.sh
$ARG1$ $ARG2$ $ARG3$ $ARG4$

when I try to execute the following from command line I get an error.

-bash-3.2$ ./check_nrpe -H localhost -c check_process_x64 -a 10 10 nagios
NRPE: Unable to read output

however single argument works fine.

-bash-3.2$ ./check_nrpe -H localhost -c check_disk_x64 -a /var
DISK OK - free space: /var 6674 MB (72% inode=99%);|
/var=2513MB;8234;8719;0;9688

Please advise on this.  Thanks

[Nagios-users] Dependency and performance question

2009-04-01 Thread shadih rahman
Hi,
   I am running nagios on a 2.5 GHZ 4-core 64 bit machine running RHEL5.  I
am seeing some performance issue in Nagios. I am doing failover setup. I
have another similar machine which has identical config but not doing any
active checks. My master machine sends check result using NSCA. Now I can
not determine why my master machine is lacking in performace. I will paste
my performance data below. I also have another question about dependency.

1) if a HOST is down, does the service checks still happens? I would like
to setup a dependency where if host is down no service check should take
place. How do I go about setting this up. An exapmple will be much
appreciated.

2) How can I start troubleshooting my performance issue?

Thanks in advance.
