You really need to post more details running up to this problem. What
version Nagios you are running? What hardware and distribution are
you running on? Is this a new install? Did you do any system updates
and then discover this problem?

If I were to guess: It seems like you updated some library files and
would need to recompile Nagios.

Good luck.

Hi Mark,

Nagios version: 3.0.3
Distribution: CentOS 5.2

I don't installed anything on this server the problem appears from one to the
other day and i dont know from where it comes.
It must be something in the object definition files but i dont know what.
If i stop nagios it runs perfectly for a while(15-30 mins) after this time the
problem appears again.

Hi Assaf,

glibc is at version glibc-2.5-24
it is a i585.

I don't think that the problem has to do something wich glibc or the
distribution files.

If i stop nagios, delete the retention.dat file and start nagios than it works
for aprox 5-7 mins.

Thanks for al answers

Are you saying that you have had this problem since your first
install? It is possible that you have found a bug but many people are
running Nagios 3.0.3 on CentOS. Is there anything interesting/"out of
the ordinary" in your configuration of Nagios that you could think
of? Could we get more on what causes this error to start?

The object definition files should be carefully checked by Nagios on
startup unless there is some illusive bug. Have you tried running
nagios with a simple configuration.

I would try two things: I would back up nagios/etc and then install
the sample configs (make install-config) and see if that shows any
difference. And I would still strongly suggest to reconfigure/
recompile nagios using the method as described in the quickstart guide
for fedora; scaning over the configuration output for anything
interesting.

Hope this helps.

Check your apache error_log. It should detail the exact reason for the
Internal Server Error. There are many reasons why you might see that
kind of error, some related to nagios some not so we'd just be guessing.

Try this (preferably as the apache user) --

$ bash
$ REQEUST_METHOD=GET
$ export REQUEST_METHOD
$ /usr/local/nagios/sbin/status.cgi

It looks like there may be some library missing or not where it's
supposed to be. Was nagios compiled on this machine? You can use 'ldd
/usr/local/nagios/sbin/status.cgi' and verify that the libraries exist
where they're expected. Additionally, if you have SELinux enabled, make
sure that's not causing any problems.

Re: [Nagios-users] Internal server error

2005-12-05 Thread Charles Guimont

This is the error message I get:

Error: Could not read object
configuration data!

Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error:

Verify configuration options using the -v command-line
option to check for errors.
Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or
status data errors.
Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use
the same object data storage options (i.e. default text file or
template-based file).

First, running the command nagios -v nagios.cfg return no errors

Startup makes no errors:

[1133799437] Nagios 2.0b6 starting... (PID=907)
[1133799437] LOG VERSION: 2.0
[1133799437] Finished daemonizing... (New PID=908)

How can I make sure of this??
Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use the
same object data storage options (i.e. default text file or template-
based file).

Thanks
Charles

This error doesn't make much sense any more with 2.x since all object
storage options are now template-based. There may be some circumstance
where that might be pertinent but I'll bet you would know what you were
doing to make it happen.

If you run apache as nobody thn you are in for a heap of trouble with

[Nagios-users] Internal Server Error on Nagios 2.0

2006-02-21 Thread Pete Shelfo

I recently tried to fire up a new Nagios server running on
RedHat 4 Enterprise (fully patched).  Everything works fine, pre-flight
passed, http is correct, web page displays; however, whenever I access a CGI
link on the left hand page I get the following error:

“Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to
complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and inform them of the
time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused
the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I have tried and tried to troubleshoot the problem but have
had no success.

1.  I have searched the forums, google and apache.  It appears this is
a common problem across many Linux platforms

2.  I have chmod 777 /usr/local/nagios permissions fully with no success
and added every userID I could like of to the group.

3.  I have even tried a default configuration with one host, a check ping
and along with all the sample configs.  The problem still occurs.

4.  I have verified my http conf and tried all types of suggestions I found
during my searches.

My http config error log displays the following:

Tue Feb 21 10:43:50 2006] [error] [client 10.1.7.200]
Premature end of script headers: status

.cgi, referer: http://servername/nagios//side.html

I am currently running Nagios version 1.1 with no
issues.  This really looks like an incompatibility with Apache or CGI or
something?  Anyone have any ideas – I am flat out?

I think if you made the font bigger we could help more.

It's a common problem, but it has many (simple) solutions. This is an
apache-related problem, not Nagios, though. You'll find it.

Your permissions or authentication via website is not correct
(REMOTE_USER isn't being set). For RHEL systems, using the rpms
provided by dag make things much easier, as the permissions etc are
done for you. All you're left doing is adding users to the web
authentication setup he provides and configuring services, or changing
his auth to whatever auth system you use in your env. They work very
well.

Pete, it sounds that you forgot to put in place the user that you're
logging in. At CGI.cfg file there's a SYSTEM/PROCESS INFORMATION ACCESS
parameter that you use to tell to Nagios who has the permission to view your CGI
links.

I would expect Apache to be providing more useful information in the
error_logs. At any rate, do you have SELinux enabled? Have you verified
that you are not experiencing restrictions based on that. I would also
try running status.cgi from the command line as a non-root user to see
if you experience any errors that way. It's not a perfect test but it
may provide some insight. I doubt it's a compatibility issue. Probably
SELinux or some library that isn't where it's expected. Were the CGI's
compiled on this machine? You might try running 'ldd status.cgi' and
make sure that the libraries are where they're expected and readable by
your apache user.

what happens when you run the status.cgi from the command line as the
apache user?

is this error happening with *all* cgis, or just this one?

'Premature end of script headers' *almost always* means the cgi is
throwing an error (before completing headers the browser can
understand).

The best place to start is pasting in the error, in quotes, into google:

RE: [Nagios-users] Internal Server Error on Nagios 2.0

2006-02-21 Thread Pete Shelfo
I found the answer!!! Unfortunately installing Nagios via the RPM did
not help. The problem lies within SELINUX. If I disable SELinux the
CGI scripts work fine.

/etc/selinux/config
SELinux=disable
Reboot the server

Now the question is why does the security enhanced Linux module cause
problems with the CGI scripts? I value a secure Linux server so I am
off to research some more.

[Nagios-users] Internal server error while opening trends/histogram/map cgi's

2009-08-30 Thread Sowmya Dass
Hello

I have installed Nagios 3.2.0 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4
(Nahant Update 6). I am able to see the web interface for Nagios.

Earlier i had missing trend.cgi, statusmap.cgi and histogram.cgi. Initially
I had missed out installing the gd libraries. Then later I installed the gd
libraries and tried reconfiguring and re-installing nagios. During configure
it did say that it could find the GD libraries. Some of the things did work
out eg: gif image displays.

I configured using command : ./configure --with-gd-lib=/usr/local/lib
--with-gd-inc=/usr/local/include --with-command-group=nagcmd

But I see that, when i try to click on the links for trends/histogram/map I
get the below error:
 Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable
to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, y...@example.com and inform them of
the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have
caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I tried doing ldd for following cgi's :

[r...@lon-engbuild66 sbin]# ldd histogram.cgi
*libgd.so.2 => not found*
libpng12.so.0 => /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 (0x06f79000)
*libjpeg.so.7 => not found*
libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x00d79000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x00c2a000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x00af3000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00ad9000)

I get similar message's for statusmap.cgi and trends.cgi. But I checked and
I have the shared objects present under /usr/local/lib.

I dont understand why this error is coming up still.

Please help me resolve this.

Regards

Sowmya Dass

Is /usr/local/lib listed in /etc/ld.so.conf or in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*?
If not, the system doesn't know it needs to search there. You need to
add it and run 'ldconfig -v' and make sure you see it listed.

[Nagios-users] Internal Server Error Occuring when trying to access Nagios on the browser

2010-08-24 Thread Ifeanyi Agu
Hello all,

I am new to Nagios. I just installed it and did all the necessary configuration
but when I open it on my browser, I can only view the documentation. The other
links I go keep showing me internal server error.

I checked the apache error logs and it was telling me that permission was
denied when trying to access the cgi files that come with Nagios. Please what
could be the problem?

Welcome! I hope you enjoy using Nagios as much as I do.

A common reason for this problem is that the correct permissions are not
applied.

When you compiled nagios, did you run "make install-webconf"?

After that you should have reloaded the Apache config. The command for this
might vary depending on what Linux distribution you are using. As an
example, on Ubuntu it is..

  /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

Another problem can be that the Nagios daemon is not running. If you enter:

  ps -ef | grep nagios

does this show the daemon running?

It is also a good idea to check your nagios config before starting the
Nagios daemon. You do this by entering:

/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

(you might need to alter those if you installed in a different location).
If the verification fails, you will need to fix whatever the problems are in
your config before continuing.

Which version of Linux are you using, and which instructions did you follow
when installing Nagios? Nagios can be installed in lots of different ways
so it will help to know which one you were working to.

Cheers,

Jim

Hello Jim,

I used this link (http://www.kernelhardware.org/install-nagios-on-centos-5/) to
install my Nagios. I did all that you said while installing. I ran this command

What output did you see?

You should see the nagios process(es) listed (possibly along with the
grep process which is part of the command you just ran) something
like this:

nagios 401 1 23 Aug13 ?2-18:48:18
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
nagios 17576 401 0 12:42 ?00:00:00
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
nagios 17650 401 0 12:42 ?00:00:00
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
nagios 17725 401 1 12:42 ?00:00:00
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
nagios 17728 401 1 12:42 ?00:00:00
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -d /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
mylogin 17746 526 0 12:42 pts/000:00:00 grep nagios

Looking at the comments on the web page where you got the instructions
from, it also seems likely that SELINUX is enabled on your Centos
linux OS. Personally I would disable it as it's a right pain to
manage otherwise. I don't run RedHat or Centos myself so can't tell
you how to do that.

Please can I also ask you to send your emails to this list in plain
text? The formatting can be a bit tricky to work with when quoting
back a reply.

Cheers,

Jim

I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem, no.

Take a look at the nagios log file which is probably
/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

Don't forget my earlier recommendation to validate the Nagios config like so:

  /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

Did you try that, and if so what did it say?

2010-08-25 Thread Ifeanyi Agu
Hello Alex,

I have the changed the owner and group of the file to nagios but I still get
the same error in nagios.log file when I try to start nagios. I tried this when
logged in as the root user. I then logged in as nagios user and I could not
even start apache or nagios. It was telling me that service is not a command it
recognises. Please, please, please help me. Am running outta time

I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem, no.

Take a look at the nagios log file which is probably
/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

Don't forget my earlier recommendation to validate the Nagios config like so:

  /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

Did you try that, and if so what did it say?

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Ifeanyi,

The issue points to a permission issue - how did you install nagios? Did you
compile it or you used a package manager to install. What environment are
you using? Redhat - Centos? What version of nagios did you install/

Re: [Nagios-users] Internal Server Error Occuring when trying to access Nagios on the browser

2010-08-25 Thread Dorfman, Justin
I would sugest that you check that you've created the nagios user and group
as following the output of your command *ls -la /usr/local/nagios/var/
*nagios should run under nagios user and nagios group.

if you did edit your nagios.cfg
Code:

vi /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

and change the nagios_user and nagios_group to nagios
Code:

nagios_user=nagios
nagios_group=nagios

save it and try to restart nagios again.

2010-08-26 Thread Ifeanyi Agu
Thank all for the help so far.

My Nagios is running now.

Many of the sites I want to monitor are Java based sites. I want to know
whether Nagios would report that the site is down if for instance Apache Tomcat
or the db service is not running.

if you did edit your nagios.cfg

Code:vi /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfgand change the nagios_user and
nagios_group to nagios

Code:nagios_user=nagios
nagios_group=nagiossave it and try to restart nagios again.

I wouldn't have thought that would be the problem, no.

Take a look at the nagios log file which is probably
/usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log

Don't forget my earlier recommendation to validate the Nagios config like so:

/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

Did you try that, and if so what did it say?

Cheers,

Jim

If the services are on a Windows server, you can check whether they
are up either using an SNMP query ( the check_snmp_win plugin which
you'll find at http://nagios.manubulon.com/ ), or if you would prefer
not to use SNMP, then look at the NSClient++ agent for Nagios at
http://nsclient.org/nscp/ . For simple web sites you can use
check_http to test that the web page is up and running too.

If you want a head start in understanding how the various plugins,
agents and add-ons for Nagios fit together, I recommend the book
"Nagios" by Wolfgang Barth published by No Starch Press. It gives a
really good explanation from first principles and goes in to plenty of
detail too.

2010-08-26 Thread Ifeanyi Agu
Hello all,

I have Nagios running on my system currently. I purposely shut down one of my
sites and Nagios to monitor it. From the browser it's telling me that there is
a problem which is ok for me but it does not send me a mail. I checked nagios
log and this is what I saw

1282660775] SERVICE ALERT: seamfix;HTTP;CRITICAL;HARD;4;HTTP CRITICAL: HTTP/1.1
503 Service Temporarily Unavailable - 616 bytes in 1.649 second response time

nagiosadmin;seamfix;HTTP;CRITICAL;notify-service-by-email;HTTP CRITICAL:
HTTP/1.1 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable - 616 bytes in 1.649 second
response time

Is there any other thing I need to set on my OS (am using Cent OS) to get the
mail to start working. Thanks

Hi there --

Sorry about the false alarm. The issue was the absence of an htpasswd.users
file. Once that was put into place, access
to the web interface was successful.
