Hi all

To send sms notifications, I am using since 2003 a couple of radiomodem,
connected via serial to my server and smstools SW.

Now, I need something stronger compared that configuration because for
specific checks I have to send many and many sms at the same time.

What can I use ?

Hi Marco

I use a Nokia 6021 mobile phone hooked up via USB using the gammu software,
and I write all my sms alerts to a MYSQL database, an sms daemon then scans
the database and sends out any that are in the outbox table through the
connected mobile phone.

I have tested this with 243 sms alerts all going out at the same time
(killed a VPN link) and it worked flawlessly (although did take approx. 15
minutes to send all alerts)

Hope this is helpful

Similarly, we use a Motorola Razr V3 mobile phone connected via USB
cable to the Nagios system and send our alerts using the gammu software
as well. We have the phone on an SMS-only plan from T-Mobile.

We've had some issues with signal strength to the mobile phone but
relocating the mobile, using an active USB cable to overcome the
distance, to a different location in the datacenter resolved that issue.

Good luck!

For free sms you can use icq sms (if available for your country)

I have connected a cell phone (nokia) to a windows xp box...
Installed nokia pc suit
Installed Microsoft sms sender
Enabled telnet on the windows box
Created a BAT file with the sms sender syntax
Used BAT2EXE to convert the file to exe
Created a expect script on the linux BOX to telnet to the windows and
execute the sms script.

My opinion is that using a cell phone is better than some external SMS
gateway...
Because if your internet fails.. how will you reach the external SMS

2007-06-05 Thread Morris, Patrick
 I've fully migrated to Nagios 2.8. My only problem seems to
 be that host notifications to my cell using sms_client have
 incomplete output. Service notifications using sms_client to

 of formatting problem on my command definition.

 Here are my notification command definitions:

 #'host-notify-by-sms' command definition define command{
command_namehost-notify-by-sms
 command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
 '$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is
 $SERVICESTATE$ ($HOSTOUTPUT$)'

 }

You're using service-specific macros in a host notification.

 HostNotification

 Hi,

 I've fully migrated to Nagios 2.8. My only problem seems to be that
host
 notifications to my cell using sms_client have incomplete output.
Service
 notifications using sms_client to my cell work just fine. I'm
guessing
 this is just some kind of formatting problem on my command definition.

 Here are my notification command definitions:

 # 'notify-by-sms' command definition
 define command{
 command_namenotify-by-sms
 command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
 '$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
 ($SERVICEOUTPUT$)'

 }

 #'host-notify-by-sms' command definition
 define command{
command_namehost-notify-by-sms
 command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
 '$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
 ($HOSTOUTPUT$)'

 }

Not really related but $SERVICEDESC$ and $SERVICESTATE$ will always be
null for a host notification. You should remove them.

 Email notifications work fine. Service notifications via SMS work
fine.
 Only the hsot notifications via SMS do no t work correctly.

 Here's the output I do receive from the host notification via SMS:

 Recovery:
 Server1: is ()

 These command definitions worked fine on my Nagios v 1.3 system.

Not likely since $HOSTOUTPUT$ wasn't valid then ;) In any event, I think
they worked fine under 1.3 and you're seeing your current results
because host-notify-by-sms is never actually used. Do you really have
contact definitions that use host-notify-by-sms? It would seem more
likely that they all use notify-by-sms for both
service_notification_commands and host_notification_commands.

Re: [Nagios-users] SMS Notifications - Incomplete Output onHostNotification

2007-06-05 Thread Stover, Beth
You are correct. I had never added the host-notify-by-sms to my contact
entry.

Thanks for your help!

 Subject: [Nagios-users] SMS Notifications - Incomplete Output on
 HostNotification

 # 'notify-by-sms' command definition
 define command{
 command_namenotify-by-sms
 command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
 '$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
 ($SERVICEOUTPUT$)'

 }

 #'host-notify-by-sms' command definition define command{
command_namehost-notify-by-sms
 command_line/usr/local/bin/sms_client -q $CONTACTPAGER$
 '$NOTIFICATIONTYPE$: $HOSTNAME$: $SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$
 ($HOSTOUTPUT$)'

 }

I can help you to set up SMS'ing with a modem that has a SIM-card in.
Obviously there will be costs involved with the SIM-card.
Give me ahsout if you want to go that route.

 I use 'qpage', which drives a direct attach modem, through a dedicated
 analog line.

 Most cell phone providers, including Verizon, support using the TAP
 protocol to send messages to mobile phones as text messages.

 http://www.qpage.org/
 https://www.vtext.com/customer_site/jsp/aboutservice.jsp

yes i should have said - we use qpage to send the page via the modem to
the carrier and then they send it off to our pagers. we tried SMS v's
pager and prefer pager as they are less easy to sleep through and we
found reliability was better - we had too many SMS's just vanish

In my shop we just treat cell phone notifications the same as email
notification. For instance, Verizon Wireless customers who have text
messaging can receive pages by sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
where ## is the telephone number of the cell phone you are
sending email to.

I also have a front end (middle end?) script for cell phones that
chops a notification up into chunks that don't overflow the cell phone's
text size limit and sends them out as multiple pages.

I've seen a few options IRL:
* attach a cellphone to your server and install SMS sending software
* subscribe to an email-to-SMS gateway
* subscribe to another SMS provider
* ???

Cheers!

we send pages (no sms) using a modem on the nagios box and then this
routes to the pager supplier - Relying on email or email-to-sms gateway
is dangerous as what happens if all connectivity fails - your alerts do
not get through.

I agree mostly, but I'd like to send SMS messages via a directly
connected modem or wireless phone.

On that subject, anyone have information on installing a blackberry on
a linux box for this purpose?

well, you could just use gnokii or something like that and have a
mobile phone connected directly to the nagios server, although I
haven't tried this myself.

it does mean that there is a completely separate route for gettng
alerts.
