Re: Re: [Neomagic] vga dell laptop

2002-05-14 Thread awyatt

The whole intention behind that posting (looking for a windows driver) is to stir up
trouble on the list (or for laugh factor perhaps seeing what the reply would be). I
have no problem making fun of them, if they can make their way to this list and post
to it, then they should have no problem getting to www.dell.com and getting their
driver. Even a non english speaking person would know how to get to www.dell.com as
the information would be included with their PC. If it offends anyone that a person
looking for windows software on a list that's main focus is unix drivers, then they
have problems that can't be resolved on list.

Well... yes. The guy was lost, but quite how he had ended up here is beyond

anyone's guess. Dell, being a huge company, has a web presence in many, many

languages/countries. Just typing www.dell.your country's domain suffix is

likely to get you to the right place, then it should be plain sailing.

While it's wrong to blast these guys off the face of the earth for asking a

simple question, it's also unhelpful to suggest that they change their

operating system to one which we could provide a driver for. Unfortunately,

humour is one of those things which often doesn't translate well.

I must apologize. I admit that I was overly rude, but I mean as James

 Holden

has indicated, that was practically flamebait. And frankly I was digging

through my laptop (which is the same model BTW) to help this person out,

thinking that they're running XFree86, and then got very frustrated to find

out that this person's question has absolutely nothing to do with this

 mailing list.

Windows drivers are not terribly hard to find, and frankly, if Windows NT

doesn't have the driver, an update or slight search on google would yield

the result. Not to mention to know how to subscribe ot htis mailing list

would require to go through the site itself and it's pretty apparent that

 it

has nothing to do with Windows NT.

As to possible help to the original question, here's a link that may help

 http://www.menk.com/dod_license/dell_driver_issue.html

and I swear that it's on the first page on a google search using the string

windows NT dell latitude xpi driver, and adding to that, dell itself does

 have the driver.

If the manufacturer has the driver, why subscribe to a mailing list that

completely has nothing to do with it?

Anyways, again, I must apologise to whoever that was offended (i know it's

more than one) and I have a couple of frustrating on my mind recently and

I'm very sorry if I hurt someone's feelings. But I couldn't help doubting

the reason why someone looking the Windows driver would travel all the way

here and subscribe and ask such a question while Dell already has the

 drivers.

You're at the wrong mailing list.
I know that many windows user aren't computer oriented, but I did not
know there are so many that are also not intellegence oriented.

I hate that thought the XFree86 users are rude.

Hello everyone,

We sometimes get a misdirected piece of e-mail or two sent to
the list. As far as I know, this is always done by
well-intentioned people simply trying to get assistance.
Sometimes the reason we get these messages is that the person
doesn't speak english well. Regardless of the reason,
please be respectful of these people. The kind of advice
that would seem obviously pertinent to share would be explaining
to the person that she/he can learn what X Windows by looking at
the http://www.xfree86.org web site. You might also mention
that there are implementations of X Windows that run on the
Windows platform and perhaps the person would be interested
links to some of those.

Anyhow, in case you didn't know, I am the admin for this list.
I would greatly appreciate it if folks here would not
slam Windows users. We are here to promote the development
of XFree86 and, indirectly, open source software. That takes
courtesy and a bit of compassion.

Thanks,
Miles
