[neonixie-l] Re: Which standing tubes have round/smooth tops and where to source them?

there are ZM1040 which look much much better than IN-18s but cost a bit
more. If you want cheap round tubes then i got bad news for you. You could
also try the end view nixie tubes, the small ones are still relatively
cheap ZM1020 and equivalents, but good luck getting ahything bigger than
2cm digits on those.

Re: [neonixie-l] big tubes in action

2014-04-14 Thread kay486
my guess would be that these are indeed Z567M they do not match the size as
you can see the width of the +/- is smaller that the width of the digits.
You would only need to put the sockets litlle bit higher to match the
relative position. if you compare Z566M to Z567M they have the same symbol
width.

[neonixie-l] Re: IN-37 ???

2013-11-19 Thread kay486
Yea, there are some pasive displays with numerals arranged like this, but
all of them have all the decimal digits as you said. The thing is, that
they do not count. I understand how it could be beneficial to close all the
numbers in one envelope if you have 10 of them, but with only 6 you could
have yoused setup like you explained.
There might be slight benefit, that the ignition voltages are loqer if the
cathodes are together, not sure about that though.

You can easily identify the cathode in most of the tubes by looking near
the base of the tube where the wires connect through glass. The anode
ususly has some sort of insulation, tiny glass tube around the wire or some
sort of ceramic coating. It has to be coated to prevent undesired glow on
all the surounding cathodes.

Just an update on the situation: i called the seller and the price around
25 USD will most likely be possible. Now he has to check how many tubes he
still has. I should have the answer in about a week or so.

One question, what would be the easiest way to test all the tubes? I do not
have any dekatron spiners on hand to modify. All i have re couple nixie

Well, not that hard then. I was wondering if it would be possible that you
would make a B13B kit in the future? I was offered to buy about 20 to 30
(seller was not sure) Z564S dekatrons for reasonable price. I do not intend
to buy them for myslef, but i could get them for somebody else, because
selling them one by one on ebay would take so long. But if there was use
for them (B13B spiner kit) they could sell pretty well i can imagine. They
are really nice tubes (i am not sure about their life and other
specifications) one of only few dekatrons without the getter mirror.

Interesting device. I found this video showing its capabilities. The thing
that seemed interesing about the ZM1251 is that in the datasheet it looks
like there is actual lead for every pixel and it must be relatively old

[neonixie-l] Re: Nixie clock design process

2013-07-01 Thread kay486
I am not that big fan of the bridge design, because most nixie clock i saw
just seem to be too tall. Having the base taller than the tubes themselves
just does not seem right to me. Thats why i also like your designs where
the middle of the case is recessed down, like in the 2.jpg It would make a
really nice and original design.

One more thing, for the finished product, PLEASE do not use any of the
russian tubes, they are not worth it. If you have amazing case, do not ruin
it with cheap ugly tubes. The IN-8 are best looking russian tubes, yet they
are ugly compared to like common Z570M. If you plan to go with
pvelectronics kit, be sure to talk to Pete about the board, i have really
good experience with him, he is always helpful and what do you know, he
might adjust his board specificly for this project. Also, i know that he
has some amazing tubes in stock like ZM1210 or ZM1177. Those tube together
with your finished design could make an exclusive clock! Make sure to talk
about your project with him!
cheers

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Fascinating ebay sale ... apparently IN-18 production gear!

2013-05-08 Thread kay486
The tins contain getters actually. But the thing is that most likely they
wouldnt be working by now. Also the most important thing that is missing
there are the tube bases with the metal to glass seals. You can easily etch
the anode grid and cathodes. But you wouldnt be able to make the bases.
All in all, there is no wa you would make money on that. It would be just
an interesting project to work on.

Re: [neonixie-l] One reason for blue dots in Nixie tubes found - anode mesh n...

2013-04-27 Thread kay486
Well, i asked about the ungultig marks here before, and yea, i have one
Z5600M that has blue spots almost on all digits, but i got another three
tubes which i bough together with the previous one, so they seem to be from
the same lot, that are perfectly fine.
I also got two dekatrons Z562S that came from ungultig boxes, but
unfortunately i can not test them (all i know is that they are not leaked)
could there be a problem with these?
Also about the glowing leads, i found out that it can happen with Z568M /
Z5680M when you fire them at lower voltages that the recomended ones (im
talking about NIB tubes) but they are absolutely fine at higher voltages
though.

[neonixie-l] Testing nixies/dekatrons/neon bulbs without powersuply

2013-04-19 Thread kay486
Hello,
i do not know if this is commonly known way to test tubes, but i discovered
that you can test (to some extend) with a CRT television. Basicly you power
on the tv so it gets lot of static electricity on the glass screen, then
you just hower the tube with the pins slightly touching the screen while
moving it all around it, be sure not to shorten out the leads with your
hand! Then when you think its charged enough, you just take the tube and
shorten the pins and you should see some random ionization in the tubes! I
find this a really good and simple way to test the tube for any leaks when
you do not have any equipment on hand.
I am not sure if it can harm the tube in any way, but i doubt it can. Maybe
somebody can correct me on this.
I have tried it with quite a few tubes already and it seems to work with
all nixie tubes, neon filled dekatrons (i havent tried argon ones) and even
with neon bulbs!

Please let me know what you think about this!

might add this one: you can see nixie tubes on Stargate, season 10, episode
19 around 10:34 (you can check this
[link],
its not the best quality though) They are even counting up nicely! And im
pretty sure they have been there many times, i just havent noticed them :)

[neonixie-l] Z5600M stamped "ungültig"

2013-03-16 Thread kay486
Hello there, i just bought four Z5600M tubes in original boxes, never used
(i was even the first one to open them). They all work just fine, except
for one wich has some blue parasitic glow on few of the wires. The thing
is, there is "ungültig" stamp on all of the boxes. Im not really sure what
it means, google translate isnt too specific. But im guessing it means that
they are expired maybe? If so, whats the reason to stamp something like
that on tubes, i mean, wouldnt all of the tubes be expired by now?
Im just interested in the story behind this, how things were done in the
past days :)
