[newbie-it] problemi....
[newbie] Boot freeze problem.
Hi. I am working with Omnibook XE2 laptop, with LILO for dual boot between Win98 and Mandrake. I can't boot linux after powerup - it gets stuck between "Enabling swap partition" and"Initializing window manager sessions". I have to boot Win first, restart (without powering off) and then boot Linux, which works just fine. Why is that? I will be gratefull for any suggestions. Thanks Andrey.

[newbie] Gnome 1.4 via Red Carpet?
Anybody know what Ximian's plans for releasing the official Gnome 1.4 via Red Carpet are? It's been out for a couple of weeks, but there's no mention of a target date of it becoming available via Red Carpet yet, on Ximian's site. RC is still listing the beta version of 1.4.

That, coupled with an Office compatible program such as StarOffice, could very well be the leaping block that prepels us onto the generic user desktop. Plus, advanced functions for Webmain/Linuxconf are required so that regular non-geeks can modify their systems easily. YMMV and the opinions expressed are those of the author alone. -- Blue skies... RE: [newbie] Networking
You are at the start of the samba adventure. Your distro came with samba almost certainly. Install it and read through the docs. My distro also included the manual as printed by O'Reilly. I am running linux on my laptop at work and I can get the Internet to work through the network but I would like to be able to access some of the files on the servers (We have both a Novell and an NT Server). Also, if I were to setup a totally Linux Based network (server and clients) can you gain access to printers and files? Thanks. Matt

[newbie] Trident Cyber 9397/DVD
Hi, I'm running Linux on an IBM ThinkPad 770z with the 14.1 inch screen (1024x768 res)with Mandrake 7.2. Unfortunately, starting x results only in a black screen. I was told by the Mandrake support staff to switch back to XF86 3.3.6 to use my Trident Cyber 9397/DVD graphic card in XFDrake. I have, and others have configured x on this ThinkPad model without a patch, but my x still doesn't start. [newbie] yamaha ds-xg sound card
I have a yamaha DS-XG sound card on my toshiba laptop. After installation, all i would here would be a loud buzzing sound. After reading somewhere that if the sound card module is not loaded before the pcmcia, it wont get the right irq and itll make a loud buzzing sound. So i changed the orderand now i can listen to cds, but when i try to listen to mp3's, i have to turn up the PCM Channel (which is on mute) so i can hear it, but the buzzing also comes back (louder that the music i might add). Does anyone know how to fix this. _ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
