[newbie-it] Problema particolare d'installazione

2001-04-19 Thread Sbam

 Ciao a tutti!
Sono un newbie alle primissime armi con Linux, e vorrei installare la
 versione Mandrake 7.2.
La installazione (incominciata dal floppy col file cdrom.img) per mi si
blocca ad un certo punto :

 ...
 ...

Unable to handle Kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual addres

 Ho un Pentium(r) 150MHz, 32 MB RAM, PA-2005 motherboard,
 con due hard disk IDE : uno da 1,2GB (Seagate) con Windows98;

[newbie] Screen resolution - Update

2001-04-19 Thread cedric

The resolution is correct when a photo is opened in the file manager or The
Gimp and other viewers. It is not correct when used as background.

Also, there is a line running perpendicular right in the middle of the
screen. When I move a dialog box, this line leaves tracks.

I accepted the defaults given at installation, then had to change monitors
even though the default was correct. The video card was ok.

I changed settings in DrakConf, Screen Resolution, many times.
I've used every setting in xf86config that is even close to my set up.

I'm sure xf86conifig configures /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Which file does 'DrakConf, Screen Resolution,' configure?

Any ideas welcome.

I want to set Samba to set the permission of created files and directories

create files with rxw--. Am I missing something? Is the create mask in
Samba the same as the permissions mask used in the CHMOD command? They seem
to be behaving differently.

Any suggestions?

This is proper list configuration. This gives you, the enduser, the
ability to decide if you want to send a public message or a private one.
If you're using Netscape, click Reply to reply to the original poster,

It would be nice if Netscape could add a feature like Mutt has called

Re: [newbie] problems with MandrakeUpdate

2001-04-19 Thread Eric

MandrakeUpdate in MDK 7.2 is buggy.

This is my persnal way of using it.

I use it to tell me what to update and check for special instructions for
install, then I open two terminals. In one I ftp the the site that
MandrakeUpdate reads from. In the other I do rmp -Uvh manually for each
downloaded rpm. Often I do update list in MandrakeUpdate and do this until
the list is empty.

Bottom line: do NOT use MandrakeUpdate to update, but use it to find the ftp
sites, choose the rpms and check your progress.

Hopefully it will work in MDK 8.0. As soon as the box is in the stores I
will go and grab one.

Grant:
The short answer is, "Lots of places". Here are some things I've
learned:
1. If it's an external modem that plugs into a com port, it should be
OK. (Notice the use of the weasel word "should" -- never underestimate
other people's creativity.) One neat thing about these modems is that
you get a lot of flashing lights to entertain you.
2. If it's an external USB modem, maybe. Depending on your hardware,
distribution and version, the USB thing might be a hassle.
3. If it's an internal ISA modem, probably. However, if it features
plug-and-play, make sure it can be jumpered to configure it to a
specific com port and IRQ. This is what I'm doing. No lights, but one
less power wart and more desk space. Cheaper, too.
4. If it's an internal PCI modem, I'd be suspicious. Some work, but many
don't.
5. If it says "Windows XX only" on the box, put it down and keep
looking. However, if the box says that it does work under Windows, that
may be only a note of reassurance to the computing-impaired, and it may
work with Linux. Keep reading.
6. If the price is under $50, put it down and keep looking.
7. Some manufacturers will come out and say that their product will work
with Linux. For what it's worth, Zoom's website
(www.zoomtel.com/modemsna.html) allows you to search for those Zoom
modems that do work with Linux. Other manufacturers may do the same.
8. A very detailed list of what works and what doesn't is available at
www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. There is a lot more information
about modems and Linux at that site, too, and it's well worth spending
some time there. Make that your next destination.
9. There is also a site (I think it's www.linmodems.com, but I'm not
certain) that addresses this problem. IIR, though, it is aimed more at
the poor guy who is stuck with a winmodem and is trying to make it work.

im currently running w95 but that sucks big time
 thanx in front !

Cutting down on a Slackware distribution, I couldn't get much
lower han 90 Mb (including minimal Netscape) using Icewm as window
manager. The result was pretty spartan though. Excluding Netscape
and including a minimal Staroffice I could bring it down to 147
Mb, giving me sparse W95-like functionality -- Not worth the
bother I think.
You could try a minidistrib like Mulinux or dragonlinux
though.

[newbie] Update -- invoking bash scripts

2001-04-19 Thread Geof Steichen

I discovered, using the hex editor, that the scripts on the cdrom from
"Linux Shells by Example" terminate each line with a carrage return
followed by a line feed (hex 0d0a) combination. The lines of the
identical script entered using vi terminates each line with just the
line feed (hex 0a). The script entered using vi runs from the
command line by entering just the scriptname. The scripts from the
cdrom (lines terminated by CR/LF) do not run from the command line
directly. They do not run correctly even if invoked by saying "bash
scriptname".

How can I strip the CR (hex 0d) from the lines in the scripts from
the cdrom. Can gawk do it? It seems possible to process the file
and strip the CR characters out piping stdout to a file on the
harddisk. Can someone show me how?
Thanks in advance.

[newbie]Can Only Log In As Root

2001-04-19 Thread Michele Kerby

I apologize if this has been answered many times before. I'm an extreme
newbie (and at my age linux seems a very steep learning curve) so please be
patient with me.

I was installing several programs in rpm format under KDE. Everything was
find until I tried to install StarOffice 5.2 . Then the dragon showed up
with a message saying I had an error. I tried it once more with the same
result. Later when I tried to start linux everything stopped at the console
(the part where the asci penguin appears). I managed to log in as root and
found out I had kernal panic and a segmentation fault. So I reinstalled.
Now I can log in as root but as nothing else. I've tried deleting home
directories, removing and re-adding users, to no avail. I apologize for any
idiocy, but what can I do about this? Thank you for any help.

[newbie] CDRW-xcdroast error

2001-04-19 Thread Chris Keelan

I'm running 7.2, which seemed to detect my Acer 6206A CD-RW during the
install and has it set up as /dev/hdb--/dev/scd0.

Xcdroast says that it can find the drive and read/write but I get the
following error when I try to burn a track (it actually might be a cdrecord
error, but I can't find it anywhere in the documentation):

Cdrecord also says that mod scsi is not installed, though ide-scsi.c is
installed and cdrecord -scanbus locates the drive on scd0.

Any ideas?

[newbie] Problem about apache 1.3.19 install on Mandrake 8.0

2001-04-19 Thread vecstar
Title: ¶ê§Î¹Ï

Dear :

I haveused linux on Redhat6.2 and 7.0 for a
while.
But I am new touse Mandrake 8.0, I am happy to use
Mandrake 8.0.

I have tried successfully installed mysql-3.23.36 +
openssl-0.9.6 +mod_ssl-2.8.1-1.3.19 + php4.0.4pl1 on
Redhat 6.2

But I got some errors when applying those on
Mandrake8.0.

Here is the installation steps and the messages on
Mandrake:

# (1) install mysql, suppose now on the mysql
path
 ./configure
 make
 make install
 scripts/mysql_install_db
 /usr/local/share/mysql/mysql.server start
# It works, and I can use Mysql database

# (2) install openssl, suppose now on the openssl
path
sh config \
-fPIC \
no-idea
make
make test
# It works

# (3) install modssl, suppose now on the modssl path
./configure
\
 --with-apache=../apache_1.3.19 \
 --with-crt=...
 --with-key=...
#It works

# (4) install apache, suppose now on theapache path
 SSL_BASE=../openssl-0.9.6 \
 ./configure \
 --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
 --enable-module=most \
 --enable-shared=max \
 --enable-module=ssl \
 --enable-shared=ssl
 make

The screen shows that I got some errors
/usr/local/apache_1.3.19/src/modules/standard/mod_auth_dbm.c:85:22:
db1/ndbm.h : No such file or directory

I found that when I installed Mandrake 8.0, it doesn't create the directory
/usr/include/db1, so itgets an error while trying to read
/usr/include/db1/ndbm.h file.
So, I think it probablyan error on Mandrake 8.0.
However, as I remove the line --enable-module=most \ , that is:

--prefix=/usr/local/apache \

--enable-shared=max \
--enable-module=ssl \
--enable-shared=ssl
make
make install

It all works, and I can successfully configure php later, butI
can not #load additional module on apache, such as gd or zlib
etc..
So I think I cannotcomment out --enable-module=most

Thanks in advance.
