[newbie] mesa GL removal

2001-04-24 Thread Adam Willcox

So, I'm a big gamer, but still want to tear myself
away from the windows OS.  I'm starting to learn more and more about how
linux works and interacts with it's hardware.  One of the things that is
still illuding me though is having successful, reliable 3d support.  After
succesfully screwing up all hopes of doing this with my 7.2 installation it gave
me one more reason to upgrade to 8.0 which I did promptly.  So, this time
following the instructions from nVidia exactly I forged ahead with high
hopes.  However it appears that the original mesaGL that come with X (I'm
guessing) still remain in vestiges.  I post I read on here a couple of days
ago warned them to make sure to remove all the mesaGL stuff and to do this by
following the nVidia readme.  Well it doesn't specifically say anything
about removing mesaGL, it appears that it's just "bypassed" by replacing the
symlinks.  Is this a correct observation?  And if so, why isn't mine
working? :)
No matter what I try to play (so far just quake2,
Unreal Tournament, and Tux racer demo) I always get some kind of error ranging
from missing mesaGL and GLU library (seen during the make command for Tux racer)
to svga perssion denied... broken pipline (quake2 execution) and completely not
running at all or very slowly (Unreal Tournament).

So it all amounts to this.  I NEED HELP.
I don't know what works with what...  In windows installations the latest
opengl support came with the latest drivers from nVidia, does this also apply to
the linux versions of this driver?  Do I need the OpenGL utilities
library?  Also, I've heard that the drivers for nVidia concerning the
performance of my AGP port are poorly written and I should stick with the
original drivers but use nVidia's openGL stuff.  There DOES appear to be an
option that can be added to X config file that changes it... would this be the
proper way to do it?  Basically I think I've gotten to much conflicting
information.  At this point I would settle for a step by step howto of
exactly I can have 3d support using openGL on my system.

Re: [newbie] Grip

2001-04-24 Thread abram olson

I did an expert install of 8.0 and grip was setup to
make mp3's using bladeenc

I immediately changed it to make .oggs cause they
sound better and are about the same size as mp3's.

Xmms should play .oggs by the way. There is an
xmms-ogg-vorbis package on the cd's that you can
install to make it work.

Give em a try. I've got 40 full albums in .ogg format
(highest quality levels too) and they take up about
2.5 gigs.

Re: [newbie] Using SRPMS

2001-04-24 Thread Todd Flinders

Yes, SRPM should be just as good as recompiling from
other source. Although, it may not be as easy if you
need to tweak the source (I'm ignorant).

To compile SRPM do the following:

rpm --rebuild some.file.src.rpm

That will build the binary .rpm that you are used to
and it will be placed in...uh... i think it's
/usr/local/RPM/RPMS/iX86

where X is 3,4,5, or 6 depending on your architecture.
I don't remember the exact path and unfortunately, I
am in windows right now. But it's something like
that.

I use 2 copies of windows, one for general use and one for audio work.
to do this i had to do as u suggest and format both drives when there were
primary master, ( actually i THINK i even installed windows on the one i
moved to 2nd master by booting the machine from ide 2, it was none the wiser
to my trickery as the disk had been setup as primary master hehe)
If u are reinstalling linux grub should see your windows in its new posistion
( it seen both mine with no help from me) if not then i am certain u can
point it at it...just not sure how as i havent had to.

Go to settings ->network, and change sendmail

[newbie] KDE 2.1.1 System Sounds in MDK 8

2001-04-24 Thread Richard Bozzato

I've just installed Mandrake 8...it's good. I have one problem, though,
in that system notifications don't always work in KDE 2.1.1. The start
up clip never plays, while others may or may not work once the session
has started. If they start, they will then work for the remainder of
the session. If I re-configure arts and select "set to default" they
will then work consitently for that session. I can play CD's without
any problem and get system notifications in Gnome OK. Any ideas?

[newbie] grub and Windows

2001-04-24 Thread Mark Stewart

Hi,

I've read fragments of info in various places that suggest that Grub will
allow me to boot Windows from a disk that is not in the master position of
my primary IDE channel.

Is this true?

I just added a second 15gb disk to my currently Linux only box. Can I
temporarily put this disk into the master position on the primary channel to
install Windows then move the disk to the slave position (still on the
primary IDE channel), point grub at its new position, and successfully boot
into Windows?

Would it work if the disk was on the secondary IDE channel?

Thanks,

[newbie] install problem - second stage ramdisk & parsing hdlist

2001-04-24 Thread Richard McElroy

I'm having serious problems installing Mandrake 8.0. The computer is a
basic pentium III with no strange hardware - all pretty basic, but I
continually get the following error.

during the install boot - from CD or floppy I get

Loading Program into memory
[...]

> Error! Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk.
 (Press to proceed)

it continues to load and then after the partitioning (using recommended
partitioning or various other partition schemes) I get

Looking for available packages

An Error Occurred
nothing found while parsing /mnt/var/lib/urpmi/hdlist.CD 1 Installation
CD
(x86) (cdrom1).cz.

Is this a badly burnt CD or a memory problem (I remember using a mem=
line for other installs before - this machine has 128MB in one slot)??
Or is this something else I've missed.

TIA
Richard McElroy

RE: [newbie] Definition?

2001-04-24 Thread Russell Hoffman

Information from www.clifton.nl visit there for more info:

`MIPS is short for Millions of Instructions Per Second. It is a measure for
the computation speed of a program. Like most such measures, it is more
often abused than used properly (it is very difficult to justly compare MIPS
for different kinds of computers).
BogoMips are Linus's invention. The kernel (or was it a device driver?)
needs a timing loop (the time is too short and/or needs to be too exact for
a non-busy-loop method of waiting), which must be calibrated to the
processor speed of the machine. Hence, the kernel measures at boot time how
fast a certain kind of busy loop runs on a computer. "Bogo" comes from
"bogus", i.e, something which is a fake. Hence, the BogoMips value gives
some indication of the processor speed, but it is way too unscientific to be
called anything but BogoMips.

The reasons (there are two) it is printed during boot-up is that a) it is
slightly useful for debugging and for checking that the computers caches and
turbo button work, and b) Linus loves to chuckle when he sees confused
people on the news.'

If the same disk yields the same results on 6 different systems, you can
do one or both of the following
1) burn another disk and try it on the systems
2) download the iso again and burn another disk and try it on the
systems.

#1 is obviously much faster to show results either positive or negative,
so I would try that. I have burned about 15 copies of the disks, so I
am confident the iso is ok.

Viboonwhen you install Linux you should be making a boot
(or rescue) floppy. When you've reinstalled windows and it
overwrites grub with its own bootloader (this cannot be
prevented) then you need to insert your linux boot floppy in
the floppy drive and boot your system (you might need to set
a preference in the CMOS bios settings to enable floppy
booting). You can then install grub with the install file in
/boot.

Hi Rog,

I hear it's been compromised by subversive communist factions that are in
league with bill gates and want to squash the rise of Linux Mandrake as
world power and force to be reconed with.

seriously though, i've heard that there are some security issues with this
kernel as there are with 2.2.17. however when upgrading to 2.2.19 there
are problems with that kernel for folks such as myself that are running
ResierFS. now, there are patches for the 2.2.19 kernel and that all well
and good, but I'm starting to be of the opinion that John from NZ hold and
that is it may be a good idea to just wait till 8.1 makes it's appearence
before going to version 8. if at all.

I've downloaded and burned the Mandrake 8.0 install ISO's, but when I try
to install from them, The following happens:

The disc boots and presents the first splash screen. I get the Welcome to
Linux-Mandrake text message followed by "drinking an egg white each
morning builds a man!".
It tells me "Loading program into memory..."
There's a status bar
And the following text:
error in exec of stage2 :-(
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: Not a directory

I can't recover from this.
You may reboot your system

Any idea what could be happening? I've tried the same disc in 6 diffeent

I've found whatis.com (which redirects to whatis.techtarget.com) to be

at least provide a starting block for finding the answer.

I was able to create a user ntr. I have a very minimal install on my
desktop, though, so maybe you have some other package that is causing
the conflict. Which security level did you install with? Does it state
which user or group it was too similar to allow?

It seems that the md5sum calculated from the ISO files does not match with
the contents of the md5sums file.
In my case neither the installation ISO nor the extension ISO produced the
correct md5sum.
I mounted the ISO through the loop-back device and browsed through the file
tree and found that the contents of the ISO does not match with the contents
as mentioned in the readme file, e.g. Lin4Win is missing.
I wonder if anyone had similar experiences.

But your md5sum is different from mine as well.

[newbie] BLACKLISTED

2001-04-24 Thread Bert Ling

Hi, I have a slight problem with PPPD i think.
Just recently, I had to change a few phone lines over. As s result I had to
drop the pppd connection.
On trying to reconnect, the error-log (window) in KPPP spat out this as part
of its message:
  ATDT46292500
  BLACKLISTED

It would simply refuse to call this number.
I tried setting up an account with the "Internet Dialer", but the same diff.
Other numbers would dial OK.

I eventually got it to dial by "Lowering" my security settings, a rather
frigtening experience.
On connection, secutities were restored to normal and we are still up.

WHAT has caused this number to be BLACKLISTED, where is the file that lists
such numbers, and HOW can it be prevented.

Its my first "brickwall" in over a year, and the first since changing from
Redhat.

Thanks in Advance,

Re: [newbie] Is my hosts.deny working??

2001-04-24 Thread Mark Weaver

Charles,

It does deny access to anyone to your machine provided that their
machine's ip address is entered into the hosts.deny file. OR, if you have
a line in there such as:

ALL:ALL

That single line denies access to all services on your machine. Notice
here the operative word is "denies" and not totally secures the machine.
The services are denied to anyone (machines) requesting them. it doesn't
lock down your machine and make it impervious to attack or unauthorized
entry.

Re: [newbie] Modem Busy

2001-04-24 Thread Mark Weaver

Randy,

another in this thread had mentioned something that had slipped my mind
momentarily and that was about disabling Plug n pray in the BIOS and then
trying again. That is a common problem, or rather conflict between Linux
and the PnP technology. It's something that Mandrake is working on at
present, but since it's a "windows" feature I personally don't expect
Mandrake to be responsible to make stuff work with it. It's just as easy
to either buy the hardware without it, or just to turn it off.

[newbie] Q: Retain MBR after re-installing windows?

2001-04-24 Thread Viboon Chaojirapant

Hi fellow Linux users,

How do I retain GRUB after re-installing Windows?
It seems that everytime I re-install or upgrade
Windows, it will overwrite my MBR and I will lose
GRUB.

My solution currently is to re-install Linux again
so that it will install GRUB into MBR.

My current configuration is this:
OS: Win98SE in 1st HD
Mandrake 7.2 in 2nd HD

BTW, I know that if I want to remove GRUB, I only
have to do "fdisk /mbr".

Thanks in advance.

FOOT-AND-MOUTH BELIEVED TO BE FIRST VIRUS UNABLE TO
SPREAD THROUGH MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

Researchers Shocked

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Symantec's AntiVirus
Research Center today confirmed that foot-and-mouth disease cannot be
spread by Microsoft's Outlook email application, believed to be the
first time the program has ever failed to propagate a major virus.

"Frankly, we've never heard of a virus that couldn't spread through
Microsoft Outlook, so our findings were, to say the least, unexpected,"
said Clive Sarnow, director of the CDC's infectious disease unit.

The study was immediately hailed by British officials, who said it will
Save millions of pounds and thousands of man hours. "Up until now we
have, quite naturally, assumed that both foot-and-mouth and mad cow
were spread by Microsoft Outlook," said Nick Brown, Britain's
Agriculture Minister. "By eliminating it,we can focus our resources
elsewhere."

However, researchers in the Netherlands, where foot-and-mouth has
Recently appeared, said they are not yet prepared to disqualify
Outlook, which has been the progenitor of viruses such as "I Love You,"
"Bubbleboy," "Anna Kournikova," and "Naked Wife," to name but a few.

Said Nils Overmars, director of the Molecular Virology Lab at Leiden
University: "It's not that we don't trust the research, it's just that
as scientists, we are trained to be sceptical of any finding that
flies in the face of established truth. And this one flies in the face
like a blind drunk sparrow."

Executives at Microsoft, meanwhile, were equally sceptical, insisting
that Outlook's patented Virus Transfer Protocol (VTP) has proven
virtually pervious to any virus. The company, however, will issue a
free VTP patch if it turns out the application is not vulnerable to
foot-and-mouth.

Such an admission would be embarrassing for the software giant, but
Symantec virologist Ariel Kologne insisted that no one is more
humiliated by the study than she is. "Only last week, I had a
reporter ask if the foot-and-mouth virus spreads through Microsoft
Outlook, and I told him, 'Doesn't everything?'" she recalled.
