FW: [newbie] dual boot M8.2 and XP

2002-08-04 Thread frankie

Rubbish,,, there is no reason at all not to dual boot XP and Mdk 8.2...

I am doing it right now, running on my M700 compaq laptop of all places..

it was very simple to do..

1. start with a hard disk with no partitions, (run fdisk from a win98 boot
floppy and remove all partitions.)
2. Boot from the XP CD, and follow the prompts, it will ask you about
creating partitions, I made 2 for windows using half the drive and left the
rest of the drive unpartitioned for linux. (The first partition I selected
in XP setup for format for NTFS, the second I left alone for now, (later in
XP (or Mandrake) you can format that with Fat32.)
3. Finish the XP install, load all your drivers and such and bobs your
uncle.. shut your machine down.
4. Boot from disk 1 of the Mandrake CD's.. (I only have download edition,
and thats fine.) follow the prompts, when you get to the disk partitioning
section of the mandrake install, the NTFS part of your drive will not be
listed, thats great.. partiton mandrake in the rest of the drive as you
would normally, and format and install, everything else you can select
defaults and it will all go well.. piece of cake, (And this was the my first
ever attempt at dual booting.)

my partition structure looks like this:
6.4 gig hard disk. (measurements approx.)
part 1. = 4 Gig NTFS for XP.
Part 2. = 400MB Fat32. (so both linux and XP can share files in here.)
part 3. = 150mb Linux Swap. (I have 280mb of ram, so the swap is small.)
part 4. = EXT3 / partition. (under two gig so I don't split / up any
more)

give it a go, its easy...

rgds

Franki.

PS,,, remember, you must install XP first... MUST!!!

Amend /etc/fstab, add something like

/dev/hda1 /mnt/WXP ntfs iocharset=iso8859-15,defaults 0 0

Add a new subdirectory in /mnt

/mnt/WXP

In terminal

All this assumes NTFS XP install,

[newbie] corrupted GUI

2002-08-04 Thread Lois Moorhouse

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie with MD.2 dual booted with Windows. This setup was working
for me until a few days ago when Windows crashed while I was playing new
game. Afterwards I found that my Linux desktop was corrupted. The icons
were hugh and mostly off the screen. At this time I did not think about
trying to change the resolution.

What I did try was:
--formatted partition and reinstalled Linux -- several times
both recommendated installation and then expert.
--reinstalled Linux on a different partition.
--erased partition and tried again.
--wiped entire hard drive, reinstalled Windows (different version) and then
set up new partitions and reinstalled Linux.

The resolution of the icons has been normal since the first re-installation
of Linux. However, all the windows are too large including the desktop
which extends way off the screen. I was able to drag some of the icons onto
the screen by their edges. Others are out of reach. I cannot even see the
panel in Gnome but am able to reach the start button in KDE--I can't see
it. I got into the control panel but could find no way to fix this
situation.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

my harddisk is 4.3GB and it has the root partition "/" for 3 GB and the swap
for 100MB. The rest is with another partition "/home". So when it formats
all the partitions, it does fine with "/home" and "/swap" but stops at "/"
meaning you can see "Formatting partition hda1" and nothing changes. I've
tried leaving it that way for 2 hours, nothing happened. I could access the
Alt-F1, Alt-F2, Alt-F3 and Alt-F4. So to restart the comp, i CTL-ALT-DEL.
BTW, i'm using text install since i think my graphics card doesn't support
the graphical installation. Also, i didn't use any partitioning software,
just the M8.2 CD.
I'm with 128MB RAM and 200MHZ processor.

Sound was not detected on install of 8.2 though. How do I go about
 configuring it?

 Thanks,
 SW
first, as root, in a text console without the quotes init 3, this will drop
you out of Xwindows and into a text console, login as root, type sndconfig
and follow the directions.

Re: [newbie] integrated sound

2002-08-04 Thread Nelson Bartley

Have you confirmed that your sound is not configured?
I have an ALC650 codec which was supported by 8.2 however when it was
configure it didn't set any volumes.

On another note, rather then try to fight w/ 8.2, 9.0 should be out
shortly, and the betas themselves are very stable. You might try that.

No, it's a little more complicated than that -- the same resolution can
have several different refresh rates depending on some of the
characteristics of your monitor and your preferences. You can change
these in the file (forget the name) that contains the mode lines, as
long as you know what you're doing (don't change a mode line to one that
will damage your monitor).

AFAIK, the ctrlalt+ and - merely cycle through the various mode
lines set up in that file (or maybe a subset of those mode lines??).

I'm running it on linux, windows 2000 and windows 98. I removed Netscape
6.2 from the windows machines and quit using Konqueror on linux once I had
played with mozilla for a few weeks. It is, IMHO, superior.

I gave up the struggle of getting Netscape 6.2 onto the new Windows box, and
downloaded mozilla on your recommendation. It downloaded in half the time
Netscape had taken, troublefree, as a zip file that I could put onto a disc
for future use.

It appears to install nothing to the register, simply unpacking into a
directory. It is fast, slick and I love it.

Re: [newbie] can't remember how to mount hda1

2002-08-04 Thread Mad Scientist

On Sunday 04 August 2002 03:10 am, Sean Goh wrote:
eri'm a real newbiewhat does it mean to mount?

A filesystem (usually on a disk partition, floppy disk, or cdrom) can only be
accessed after it's been mounted. Mounting sets a flag on the filesystem so
that if there is a sudden crash or power failure, on reboot, the system knows
that the partition may not be in a consistent state. During a proper
shutdown, all filesystems are unmounted once their buffers have been properly
written to disk. Of course, read-only filesystems like cdroms don't have any
flags set.

Mounting also assigns where the filesystem will appear in the directory tree.
Unlike the DOS world where disks get assigned (somewhat arbitrary) drive
letters, in Linux, the entire directory structure is a single tree under /.
You select where your disks will appear. For example, you might mount your
old windows partition under /mnt/windows while mounting your floppy disk
under /mnt/floppy. Of course, they don't have to be under /mnt. They could
appear anywhere in the filesystem. Often, the home directory is on a separate
partition so that a system re-install doesn't affect user data. Therefore,
/home is a mounted partition.

Type mount at a command prompt to see what is currently mounted on your
system. The output will be

filesystem on mointpoint type filesystemtype options

filesystem type could be ext2 or ext3 for native Linux, ntfs or dos for old
Windows partitions, or something else. Options could include r for read
only, rw for read/write, etc.

See man mount for more details.

Re: [newbie] Manually editing a file

2002-08-04 Thread Randy Kramer

I was hoping somebody would respond to this -- I'll take a stab in the
interest of leading to a resolution:

I think it would depend on whether the authors clarified or changed the
license. If they change the license, the new license presumably applies
to new releases, not prior releases, and prior releases could continue
to be used under the terms of the old version of the license.

If they clarify the license, it implies something like they think
people have been misinterpreting the terms of the existing license, and
their preference, no doubt, is that you comply with their clarification
even for older releases of the product.

It might be appropriate to comply with their preference, but I'm not
sure that it could be legally enforced, in fact I think it is not very
likely -- I suspect if a court case ensued, the result would depend
mostly on things other than an ex post facto clarification by the
authors, although that might be considered. (But, I am really uncertain
about this, and, in addition to all other considerations, it probably
depends on what country / jurisdiction the case is tried in.)

Here is some info I wrote about 15 months or more ago,, I posted it on both

hope it helps.

I have just swapped to trend viruscan for linux...

I thought I'd mention all the links and stuff, so that people can search the
archives here if they want to know how it is done.

Here is the url to download it,

ftp://ftp.antivirus.com/products/freetools/

(the address listed in the openantivirus readme didn't work for me, but
this one did...
download filescanlinux.tar (when you untar it, it has install instructions
and a pdf file)

If the scanner install gives you a message that it wont' install because you
don't have redhat release 6, (and you do have a modern linux)I got that
message with mandrake 7.2 onwards, edit /etc/issue (create it if you don't
already
have one, go into /etc and type 'touch issue') and put the words release 6
in it somewhere, you can delete it after install. (thats how the install
program works out what version of linux you have) pretty lame method thinks
me, but its a good thing that its lame if you don't have redhat.

I have it working flawlessly on Mandrake and I don't think there would be
much problem getting it working on other distro's.

Here is the link to get the latest engine update, (the version I have now is
Virus Scanner v3.1)

http://www.antivirus.com/download/engines/

Go to the Interscan viruswall table and look in the linux box.
download that tarball.

open the tarball, and copy the file in it into /etc/iscan, overwrite the
file of the same name that's in there.(it might not be a bad idea to backup
the old one in case there are problems.)

thats your engine updated to their latest version.

If for some reason the web manager pattern update feature doesn't work, (it
didn't for me, think its a isp problem, we have a strange proxy.,)
go here: http://www.antivirus.com/download/pattern.asp
choose the linux tarball and you have the latest pattern file.

Thats it,, This is a very comprhensive scanner for a freebie... much better
then the network associates vscan I was using before,,, (admitadly an old
version).
