volte.
Ciao ^_^

[newbie-it] problema con MC

2003-08-05 Thread Enrico Teotti
Ciao,

all'automount?

Grazie!

Good question. My guess would be that Sympa makes non-subscribers go through

Re: [newbie] Time Setting

2003-08-05 Thread David E. Fox
Have you run through the Time Wizard in Mandrake Control Center? If so,
did you have to change anything to get the correct time?

Yes. MCC's depiction of the current time is the correct one. From KDE's
clock, I then do Adjust Date and Time'; that launches kcmshell, which
needs the root password. Previously, that command resulted in no output.
Now it displays a dialog similar to the drak time wizard, so it could
well be the same program, but it has a different idea of the time zone.
It told me that I was in EDT with no time zone selected. How it got that
idea, I haev no clue, as it was correct when I lauched KDE.

But to fix it - I had to select the proper timezone in that dialog, and
click the check box in KDE's clock (show timezone) to local rather
than America/Los Angeles. Now it is showing the correct time, unless
it really thinks it's 8:43 AM now :).

Second, blank out your reply-to address. That should only be used when you

are sending. The problem is that it causes replies to your posts to go
directly to you, but not to the list.

Finally, I'm not entirely certain that your method of subscribing will
work. If you didn't get a find a bunch of mailings from the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] list today (expect 80 to 120 a day), go to
www.linux-mandrake.com. Click on the mail list link in the left hand column
that will take you to a page where you can subscribe to this (and a great
many others) list. Follow the procedure, and the deluge should begin.
(Mandrake uses this procedure to prevent spam. It works very well.)

Definitely worth reading, Stephen. Thanks for the link.
As a common user without any computing course or refined computing skills, I
couldn't agree more with the article. One has only to be _open_ to learn
more.
I am not sure about this, but I think what kind of prevents Linux from growing
in desktop use is a hardware item: the modem. It's extremely unbelievably
hard to find modems that are compatible to Linux. I would have 'converted'
many friends who have computers to Linux, I would even install Linux in
their computers, but when I ask them what kind or brand of modem they have,
either they do not know it or it is an on-board modem that is
Windows-dependent.
Maybe this impression is not so bleak. But I'm sure you guys out there can
enlighten me.

Subject: [newbie] system crashwhy?

isn't there somewhere that linux keeps a lot of what the system does?
i'm
sitting here this morning, got gaim, kmail, mozilla, and KsCD running,
all of
the sudden the mozilla window closes. figured that was pretty odd. i
go to
the kmail window, click on it, it closes. i turned off Gaim myself, but
then
the menu bar at the bottom of the screen wouldn't come up at all when i
moved
the mouse over it, so i switch to the desktop KsCD is on, try to turn
that
off, it disappears. so now i'm thinking the you konw what has hit the
fan.
before i can try an alt ctrl backspace to get out of linux and to the
saftey of a reboot before i get a complete system crash, the system
crashed. so now i'm forced to hit the restart button on the box. after
a
few failed attempts to get into linux, i throw the boot disc in the
drive
(cause off the CD alone it wouldn't go). i tell it to do an install and
figure i'll just wait til prompted and rescue the installation. didn't
give
me that choice, guess it did it on it's own. couple of things came up
about
it sent kill signals and what not and said it was save to reboot my
computer.
i reboot and everything seems fine. but.

does the system keep track of stuff like this so i can go in and check
WHY it
crashed? and if it does, where is there a definition of what that stuff
means, because i prolly won't understand it on my own. besides my
numerous
CD drive failures, this is the only time i remember that the system has
crashed. help appreciated, or a point or kick in teh right direction.
:)

Mike

Did you set up the printer using Mandrake Control Centre? If you use
the advanced (or expert, I don't remember the wording) tab, you can
look at all the drivers that Mandrake suggest for your printer.
Usually it's best to select the one marked 'recommended', but if it
gives you problems, try any others listed there.

 rest of reply snipped

David,

I'm so glad that your bank actually bothered to reply - mine didn't! OK,
so the reply wasn't what we wanted to hear, but at least you now know
that they are aware of the issue - maybe, if they want to keep your
business, they'll get round to doing something about it. Let us know if
you make any progress!

Margot

Does anyone have any wisdom they would care to share in regards to
running Mandrake on a dual processor box?

I am thinking in particular of dual-Athlon boxes, and in particular
particular (!) of buying a Cybertron dual-Athlon box, and would like to
know if this would be a stupid thing to do.

  Doc Evans

Well, I have a twin processor box running very happily using 1 Mhz
Pentium 3 on an Abit VP6. I like it.

I really bet he means a Gighz.

 Bugger!

dual CPU on GNU-linux is a scream and will make rings around the same
box using any windows version, doing as many things as you can think of.

 Absolutely - what he said.

 Daryl

not to greatly hijack a thread,,, but kinda on the same topic,,, I
wonder if we have anyone using dual p4 with 'hyper-threading' on and how
that is working, and what do you see? (ie.; 4 cpus?)

My internet provider has changed to DHCP unfortunatley.
When I want to switch to my windowscomputer(for games) I have to wait
maybe 2 ours before I can get the connection to work.
I cant get my ip from dhcp because It's locked to the linuxcomp's
  nic-adress.
It's dhcp but I will get the ip is locked so I will get the same number
  every time.

From windows I can release it with ipconfig /release

How do I do it from linux?
There must be some easy command for this.
I have to use my modem to send this mail...:(

\Thomas...Hoping to get a quick answer...

 ifconfig eth0 down

But don't forget after doing that, you can do the ifup eth0 to bring it back
up. Don't mean to state the obvious, but also don't want to A S S U M E
anything! ;-) Good luck!
