[newbie] Popfile dies. Why?

2004-06-06 Thread Björn Olsson
Hi,

I installed Popfile (0.20.0a-1mdk from Contrib) yesterday and it
appeared to run junt fine. Today, however, it has started dying on me.
Usually it runs for a few minutes but then suddenly stops, and it always
appears to happen when it is checking for and downloading mail. The
connection is lost to ports 110 and 8080.

# service -s | grep popfile
popfile is dead but the subsystem is locked

# service popfile restart
Stopping POPFile: kill: usage: kill [-s sigspec | -n signum | -sigspec]
[pid | job]... or kill -l [sigspec][ OK ]
Starting POPFile:[ OK ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#
A copy of POPFile appears to be running.
Attempting to signal the previous copy.
Waiting 10 seconds for a reply.
The other POPFile failed to signal back, starting new copy
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]#

Other people seem to have similar problems, in Linux as well as Windows,
but I haven't found any solution. Anyone?

Thanks a lot. Actually I played a bit with that. However, I got a
Home Theatre, and one of the lights of the amplifier blinks
whenever the sound card is not active. In that way I know that it
is not just a matter of not enough volume and such. Thanks for
   the feedback.

Is your amplifier connected to the soundcard with a digital S/PDIF
  cable (optical or coaxial)?

  HTH,

  -Frans

I do not really know, but I would say it's coaxial, otherwise I would
have Cambridge (the make of the Home Theatre) boasting of optical
 connections in the manual, etc.

 Teilhard.

You said earlier: My sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live!
Platinum 5.1. Here is a link:
http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?prodid=572 . It says:
-
Take advantage of the digital connection to Cambridge SoundWorks
DeskTop Theater 5.1 DTT3500 Digital speakers and the analog connection
to Dolby Digital-ready home theater systems
-
You should be able to see whether your cards digital or analog output is
used by consulting the cards manual and checking to which connector the
cable to the amplifier is connected. I think you use the digital output
and the blinking light on the amplifier means it's not getting a
(recognised) signal. In alsamixer digital input and output is labeled
IEC958.

Anybody knows a good tutorial for Mandrake Linux or Linux in general?

The Linux Documentation Project is a good place to start.

http://www.tldp.org/index.html

I would suggest you start with the guides. Here is a good one.

Introduction to Linux A Hands on Guide
Machtelt Garrels
CoreSequence.com
http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html

If you need help on a specific topic, I recommend using google to search
TLDP site. I never have much luck with the search on the site. For
example typing this into google:

compile kernel site:tldp.org

will take you right to the document on how to do this.

Something that I just found out was that you can read man pages in
Konqueror. For example, entering this location in Konqueror

man:mount

will cause it to bring up an easy to read HTML view of the man pages.

Much of a Linux/GNU distribution is GNU software. They have many
execelent and detailed manuals here:

http://www.gnu.org/manual/manual.html

hello,

Checking the checksum on both the downloaded image, and the burned CD
checks that the image you downloaded and burned match the origional
image. There have been times when an image on the mirror was corrupted,
as well as it getting corrupted durning the download. And sometimes the
CD image you burned does not match the file on the disk. Usualy a
corrupted RPM will error out and not install, but it is better to be safe.

Conexant has a driver, but it isn't open source--I think they charge about
$20, US. The moral is, if you must have a WinModem, get one with a Lucent
chipset. I haven't found one yet that I couldn't get to work with the free
driver, and the whole modem costs less than the Conexant driver. Or better
yet, get an external serial modem (I know, some computers don't even have
serial ports anymore) and it will work right out of the box. Beware of USB
modems--some have no Linux drivers, but some do. Do your research first if
you decide to get one.

The linuxant drivers work very good here for me under
Mdk 9.2. Linuxant does charge for their software, which is
not to everyone's satisfaction I realize. The drivers are
high quality software however, and can usually effectively
transform a conexant hcf or hsf chipset winmodem
into a high performance linmodem. I get better
performance from my conexant hcf under Linux now
than I can under ms windows.

The driver is available in a free version that will function
at a reduced performance of 14.4K, and you can test it
with your hardware before paying for full 56K with a license #.

it just stays where it is.
It small but really buging me.

 hello

 robi

Complaining about not finding something usually means the package isn't on the
path. Have you tried to locate it?

As for running mixed versions of the browser that can only lead to problems.
I've tried it and I know. :-) Uninstall all firefox/mozilla that you have
and then do a clean reinstall of the MDK package with urpmi and see if that
fixes things.

Funny that I've never had a problem with Konq using javascript though Java and
flash sometimes have problems. Could just be dumb luck or an avoidance of IE
only sites :)

Also just about every browser I know will crash on badly designed sites. IE,
which I have to use at work, bombs constantly on me. :)

For multimedia there's a plugin for mplayer that works flawlessly for me. :-)

[newbie] Can't preview files in KDE 3.2

2004-06-06 Thread José Troncoso

After installing Mandrake 10.0 everything worked fine, file previews as well.
Then I installed some packages and compiled and installed The Gimp 2 and
later I noticed that I could no longer preview files in Konqueror as a normal
user. However, as root I can still preview them. I checked that no ordinary
user, even new users, can preview files.

To me, it looks as if it's got something to do with file permissions, so I
checked the kde3 libraries but all files there are executable by all users.
I've tried many other things, even booting from kernel 2.6.3-13mdk, but none
has worked. So I'd very much appreciate your help.

Regards,

Jose Troncoso

Unfortunately, I need XP for some work applications.

Well, unfortunately SATA winRAIDs don't work that well with linux. Your
easiest option for a dual-boot is to lose the RAID0 array. Is it imperative
that you have it or do you just want it?
