[newbie]: kmail 1.2 address book - printing
Hi All Have set address book at Traditional kmail interface with KAB database - the idea of having some sort of data base appealed. Can I access this data base, reorganise if necessary and print out in A5 (1/2 letter sized page) so that I have a hard copy. Put another way - which address book format can I use that I can easily convert into a hard copy. Which programme would I need to run to interpret the address book data base and have the facility of doing a proper layout for printing. Regards Alan Smith South Africa.
[newbie]: Konqueror - embedded test viewer font
Hi All How do I change the text font in the embedded font text file viewer that comes up by default when you click on a pencil icon file in the File Manager view of konqueror It is very difficult for me to read the text, I have to manually select kedit to read the file. The same text font comes up in the 'Advanced Editor' as in the embedded konqueror text viewer - I cannot use this programme because I cannot read the writing. How do I change the font in this programme? Thanks for your help Alan Smith South Africa
[newbie] Re: Accessing webmin use https://127.0.0.1:10000/
Hi Roman https://127.0.0.1:1/ doesn't work. It is only https that I cannot access. http is okay (on localhost). This prob' with https has only been around since I messed with the firewall but then maybe it just seems that way. I really got my knickers in a twist over postfix. I gave up and reloaded mdk8 keeping my /home directory but the problem still persisted after reloading. Have I got a 'tiny firewall' or a Bastille settings file sitting in my home directory somewhere that is causing the problem, ie, firewalling https in both root and user modes. Can I manually view the firewall config file? Would this help? What's it's name and where is it? I sometimes get the feeling that letting a newbie loose on Linux is rather like setting an amateur mechanic loose on a ferari (spelling?) [newbie]: printing address book
Dear All I use kmail. Can't remember which option I chose for address book layout but I can edit the address book in addbrowser. My machine is being repaired so I have no address book. This is a stupid situation - relying on one's computer is not good. When my computer comes back I want to print out my address book, if possible, in a decent and reasonable format. How can I do this. Ideally it would be good to transfer the Kde address book to some data base where is can be manipulated and laid out to print in A5 format (approx 1/2 standard letter size) and periodically revise the data base with the changed info and reprint those changed pages or add additional pages as the case may be. Using mdk8.0 Thanks Alan Smith South Africa
[newbie]:reiserfs+e2fs mixed system
Hi All My mdk8.0 system is set up using the e2fs file system mainly because i thougth I read somewhere that reiserfs could not read the windows partition/disk. I do have occasional power failures however and the reiserfs sys would be more stable for me to use. If the reisefs file sys can read the windows partition is it possible to set up my sys using the reiserfs file system but keeping /home as e2fs as I do not have adequate means of saving the /home partition and copying it's contents to a new reiserfs /home partition. Thanks Alan Smith (sorry if this is in html. I am using opera in Win and cannot find out what format the email is set in - my own pc is sick at the moment)

[newbie] kmail - setting flags on inbox email

[newbie]:Scanner - scanace 1236p not recognised
Hi All Has anybody had any luck in getting mdk8.0 to recognise the above scanner. The manufacturers - Pacific Image - say they are working on a sane backend. No mention of this scanner is mentioned on the Sane site. This scanner is not listed on my list of sane backends. Perhaps this scanner will work on another manufacturers/model? [newbie]: qt-x11-2.2.3 and opera-dynamic
Hi all I fouled up when installing qt-x11-2.2.3.tar.gz on linux-mandrake 7.1 system. The qt install instructions want qt in /usr/local but lmdk does not use the /usr/local directory for any thing but Interbase. lmdk puts qt under /usr/lib I unpacked in /usr/lib I used ./configure without any options when installing qt. Opera tells me that I should have used the -gif option. Also I noticed just after pushing the "go" key that jpeg and 2 or 3 other items (inc gif) were disabled as part of the default ./config install. Question: 1. Can I un-make or un-install qt-2.2.3 so that I can re-configure correctly. If so what is the command (or do I just use delete) and in what directory would I use it, etc. The qt instructions did not ask me to 'make install' after make, following which I could have used 'make uninstall' - according to instructions I have for a different programme. 2. I installed in /usr/lib. A new directory was made under ./config called qt-2.2.3 which was renamed qt as per the qt install instructions. Are all the qt files and references restricted to this directory and sub-directories, ie., can I mearly delete this directory "qt" and start again unpacking in /usr/lib/qt2/lib using switches to turn on gif and jpeg + whatever, which would then place the new qt in the same directory as the older qt lib files as noted below. Before installing, existing "/usr/lib/qt" directory was renamed "qt-old". Lmdk 7.1 as loaded used /usr/lib/qt/ for the readme, tutorials and html files only. The original mdk qt lib files were left in /usr/lib/qt2/lib/qt/ viz., libqt.s0.2 and libqt.s0.2.1 Can I delete directory "qt-old" - the files seem to be duplicated in qt-2.2.3 I am not consistant in where I (or rather make) have put files. I didn't like to move files around after install without knowing what I am doing. If I simply move the files after installing will this cause a problem later. I presume the lib* files should be all in the same place lmdk placed them so that when installing a lmdk rpm it will know where to look. Never the less I installed and ran opera last night - it flies, both the loading of web pages and the downloads compared to netscape which i currently use all the time - haven't figured postfix yet, can receive but not send. Opera down load's seem/are much faster. I used opera in M$ Win98 - same thing. The opera web pages, depending on the site, lack the fancy images/icons. I would like to install qt properly. Which directory should I put the tar.gz file in for unpacking so that the files are placed all together in /usr/lib/qt2/lib/qt/ (the original lmk directory) EG: rename this qt as qt-old; gunzip in -/qt2/lib/ then tar which produces a directory qt-2.2.3; rename to qt; run ./configure --??? . Then - move the original lmk qt2/lib/qt files back into /qt2/lig/qt now loaded with the new qt-2.2.3 I would appreciate basic for idiot instructions, eg., how would I append the ./config command with the correct switches to have qt installed and usable by what ever programme I installed in the future that might need all the options that are not default. Thanks for your time. Sorry about the verbosity. Alan Smith

[newbie] MTU - changing settings lmdk7.1
Hi everybody How can i change my mtu settings to try and establish optimal settings/performance. When lm7.1 was installed the install programme asked me for my mtu and rtu? settings. i entered 576 as this was the figure used in Win98. My eyes are red from reading docs/manuals but for the life of me I cannot find any reference to mtu settings. My isp has offered an ftp connection and binary file for download tests (it's a linux server) and I want to take up this offer to try and optimise my internet conn. This is important as my modem rarely if ever connects at anything above 24000 LAPM. It is a 33600 microcom deskporte - good for lousy lines. Thanks Alan Smith South Africa

Re: [newbie] [Newbie] Microcom Deskporte 28.8P/33.6P parallel connected
Thanks Denis Have re-connected this dual parallel/serial modem to serial in Win. Still awaiting my LM7.0? pack and will expirement once it is installed. Microcom say their advanced parallel technology will give up to 300,000 bps modem to computer data transfer speeds. The theory seems good but the telephone lines are so very slow, the modem will not even connect at 28.8Kbps.
