[newbie] Apache permission problems
Having problems with file permissions and Apache on a Mandrake 9.0 box. Error message is: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /bookmarks2.htm on this server. Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.26 Server at mail.shadowdog.com Port 80 Permissions for the enclosing directories for the site are as follows: drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 Mar 17 13:12 home/ drwx--x--x4 shadowdog apache 4096 Nov 19 08:43 shadowdog/ drwxr-xr-x 11 shadowdog apache 4096 Mar 5 10:13 public_html/ I've been through this before, but can't seem to remember what the magic permission combo is. [newbie] RAID configuration problems
Having big trouble trying to configure MDK 9.0 with a Promise IDE RAID. If there are drives attached to the the RAID controller, in this case a couple of Western Digital 80 giggers, the BIOS allows me to set up the RAID. However, the Mandrake 9.0 installer only sees two separate drives. It also seem to insist that these are hda and hdc, making the other drives in the box hde and hdf. I want to use the drives the installer sets to hde as the boot disk and location for the root directory, but since I can't seem to get the installer to see the array as a single volume, I tried to have the bootloader put on hde, with the plan to configure the RAID array later. But then the machine won't boot. Default location for the bootloader is on hda and it looks like the machine fails to find it on hde. Is there a different strain of Mandrake Linux that will properly see the RAID array at installation? Is there something I'm just missing here? Been beating my head on this for a day and it seems like it shouldn't be so difficult. The Promise controller is on the mtherboard, processor is an AMD XP2200+ with a gig of PC2700 RAM. Any help with this is appreciated. The machine has been running fine with just the two original drives (100 gig IBM 75GXP's) in it, but it just won't go with the array. [newbie] IBM Deskstars in Mandrake 9.0 server
I built a server recently for web server, email server, file server and other uses and am running Mandrake 9.0 on it. I used a pair of 100 GB IBM Deskstars (120GXP's I believe). IBM is having problems with these drives failing and now recommends only using them 330 hours a month, something less than 50% of the time (see http://www.sheller.com/ibmpress.htm). My question is whether my use of these drives in a server application is something I should avoid? Also, is there a setting for power savings that would sleep the drive when it is not getting any hits (most of the time). Looks l could add a decent SCSI drive that is meant for always-on use. [newbie] Choice of wireless card for Linux notebook?
Thinking about trying to configure a wireless 802.11B PCMCIA card to work in a Toshiba notebook running Mandrake 8. Has anyone got experience with this and can you make recommendations about which ones to consider or alternatively, which ones to stay away from. To add to the complexity, the access point is an Apple Airport Base Station, so I need to be able to set it up with 40 bit encryption rather than 128 bit. Any help is appreciated. [newbie] copying files from one to another
I have two laptops on the same network running Mandrake 8. Samba is installed and running on both. It is not clear to me how best to copy files from one to the other for backup and synchronization purposes. Can someone recommend the best method? Andy
[newbie] Tripplite UPS control
Can a Tripplite UPS be controlled via a serial cable from Linux? Running Mandrake 8.0 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000 (quite happily serving my mail and a bunch of web sites, incidentally) and I'd like to have the option of having a controlled shutdown. Needless to say, their shutdown application is Windows only. Also needless to say, I am in the SF Bay Area and look to get prepared for a long and sometimes dark summer here in California as the energy barons cart their busloads of cash out of here, bound for Texas. Alternatively, can I just set the notebook to shut down gracefully when both UPS and internal battery are close to running out of power? Any feedback is appreciated. Andy
[newbie] Using 3c575_cb driver
Looks like I need to use 3c575_cb for my 3com PC card and it is on neither the 7.0 or 7.1 Mandrake install. I have located the source for it, but have no idea what to do to make use of it. Symptom is network connections that fail after a few minutes, sometimes even seconds. The card is a 3Com 10/100 LAN CardBus PC Card 3CCFE575BT and the notebook is a Thinkpad 760XL, 48 megs, 2 gig drive. I even tried loading Redhat 6.2, but I'm still left without the choice of the above driver. Any help is appreciated. Andy
[newbie] 3Com PC Card Woes
Having trouble getting proper configuration for a 3Com 10/100 LAN CardBus PC Card 3CCFE575BT on my Thinkpad 760 XL. Under KDE, the card works correctly for a couple of minutes and then just stops. Pinging the machine over my local lan then gets no response and I can't get to the internet via my DSL connection. Works better under Gnome desktop, but only for longer. Any suggestions?
[newbie] Connecting to Macintoshes
I have two Macs on the same LAN as the Thinkpad and I want to copy files from one of them to the Linux Thinkpad to use it a a web server. Both are configured with IP addresses and file sharing is on. HOw do I get the Thinkpad to see them so that I can move files? Or conversely, can I get the Macs to see the Thinkpad and drag and drop files to it from them? Do I need to install an FTP server? Seems like there should be a way to view the other machines as available drives over the network. Andy
[newbie] Multiple questions on Mandrake 7.0
1) Having trouble getting proper configuration for a 3Com 10/100 LAN CardBus PC Card 3CCFE575BT on my Thinkpad 760 XL. Under KDE, the card works correctly for a couple of minutes and then just stops. Is there a driver out there for this device that I can put on a floppy and copy to the Thinkpad? 2) I have two Macs on the same LAN as the Thinkpad and I want to copy files from one of them to the Linux Thinkpad to use it a a web server. The install halts early with a message saying unable to start ram disk, or something close to that. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Andy
[newbie] Where are the apps??
Loaded Mandrake 7.0 on a Thinkpad 760XL and used RPM to install StarOffice and Apache. Now I can't find them. They don't show up in any KDE application menus and the only icon that shows for StarOffice just runs the installer. I've done that twice and can't find the application. This seems really basic, but where are they? I perused the directory that StarOffice created and find nothing that seems to be an app. As for Apache, the find utility finds nothing with Apache in it. Do I have to run a second installer from the hard drive? I know I'm doing something very basic wrong, but can't figure out what it is. HelL! Andy
