Re: [newbie] LILO and Windows2000

2000-05-23 Thread Anthony Chuchman

The answer to your question is: Yes, just as long as you don't delete your
DOS partitions. As a good rule of thumb, if you have a drive you want to
dedicate to Linux, remove it from DOS using FDISK, so when you're in the
install program to select your partitions, the big blank space will help
you.

Also, don't forget the "/boot" partition on the C drive, I only needed about
600MB for that partition.

Subject: [newbie] LILO and Windows2000

 Hello!

My current hard drive configuration is:

 C: 4.5Gb, bootable, Windows98 SE
 D: 4.5Gb, Windows2000

I have a dual boot system, and therefore use a Windows2000 boot manager.
I plan to shrink D: to 2.5Gb, and make a third and fourth partitions:
Linux's / and swap. Obviously, the Install will install LILO as loader.
My question is: After the install, will I be able to boot into both
 Windows2000 and Windows98?

 Thanks,

[newbie] Network / Sound Installaion Issues

2000-05-22 Thread Anthony Chuchman

I'm pretty new to Linux, but not computers so please bear with me.

I began an install of Mandrake-Linux 7.0 this weekend, and I will agree that
DarkX is a very simplified install client. The only thing is that I had two
issues (actually more, but I solved those last night around 2 am), they are
as follows:

1) I can not find my network card in the list of network cards. Does anyone
know if there is a Linux driver out there for a Netgear EA201 card, if not,
does anyone know what driver will work with it. I tried picking a few in the
install, and most failed, but settled with one that worked. Now, on boot-up,
the card fails.

2) I have no sound. I do not even remember getting a prompt for my audio
card. I know my sound card will work with Linux through an earlier install
of PhatLinux (which I wound up trashing). It's an Ensoniq VIVO (I think)
card. Any clues on where to set this up at?

Thanks for all the help!
Anthony

Re: [newbie] Problem with X configuration

2000-05-22 Thread Anthony Chuchman

Dan,

I was having the same problem with my Matrox Card. It was listed in the
device list, but would not work. I scrapped the v7.0 install (completely
scraped) and reinstalled. After a 2nd try everything worked fine.

Other than that, I have no ideas.

Anthony

Subject: [newbie] Problem with X configuration

 Hi,
   I'm having a problem with X configuration with Mandrake 7. I'm using a
S3 trio64V card on two different pentium 100 machines and all worked
well with Mandrake 6.5 but with Mandrake 7 everything goes well untill
the X server tries to start and then it tells me there is a problem with
my settings. I have tried all the settings with no success. All went
well on another Pentium 100 with the same card. All three machines have
Award bios. Any ideas would be appreciated.

   Thanks,
   Dan

Re: [newbie] Post Server Installation Commands?

2000-05-22 Thread Anthony Chuchman

It sounds like you may need to log into the server from a
client. I don't know much about Linux server systems, but from working with a
few others out there, I've noticed that the server is pretty much unusable as a
regular workstation. I could be wrong, so don't quote me, but I'd suggest to
give it a whirl.
